Author's Note: It felt like this would be the perfect day to post the final chapter. Since today is the 30th anniversary of when the show first premiered. It's more of an epilogue so it's shorter than the other chapters. This stupid story has meant so much to me so thank you so much again to everyone who read or liked or commented. You really have no idea how happy it has made me. Also another reminder that I do not own anything. I am just a fan who spends too much time thinking about fictional characters. Thanks for sticking with it.
May 2016
Monica looked out the window from her bed as the rain continued to pour outside. She then turned around and looked at Chandler, who was somehow still fast asleep even with the storm. She never understood how he could always sleep through thunderstorms. It didn't seem to matter how loud the thunder was. Monica tried to get comfortable but then she heard little pitter pattering coming from the hallway. She slowly moved from the bed and walked over to the door. She opened the door and found Dani standing at the doorway, her messy, dark hair falling into her face. She clutched her toy rabbit with all of her might.
It was a stuffed bunny that Joey had bought for her third birthday. She took that bunny with her everywhere she went.
"What's wrong, Dani?" Monica asked as she leaned down.
"Bunny's scared," Dani said quietly as she held the bunny tightly against her chest.
"Because of the storm?" Monica asked and Dani nodded her head. "Would Bunny like to stay with Mommy and Daddy?"
Dani brought the toy to her ear before nodding her head again.
"Okay let's go," Monica said as she took Dani's hand and walked over to the bed. She lifted Dani onto the bed which seemed to wake Chandler up as Dani crawled over to him.
"W-what time is it?" he asked as he rubbed his eyes. He looked over as Dani sat next to him.
"Too early to get up," Monica replied as she climbed back into bed. "Dani said that Bunny is scared of the storm."
"Oh no," Chandler said as he turned towards Dani. "Well we can't have that, now can we?"
Dani placed Bunny on Chandler chest.
"Oh," Chandler said. "Do you want me to hold Bunny for you?"
Dani nodded her head again.
"Okay I'll keep Bunny safe," he said as Dani snuggled up next to him. Monica smiled as she looked down at them. Monica had a hard time believing that her little baby was already five years old. It felt like it was only yesterday when she was holding her in the NICU. She was still a fairly quiet kid but was slowly starting to come out of her shell. It wasn't easy, though. She didn't start talking until she was two years old.
"Come on, Dani." Monica said. "Say Mama. Say Mama."
Dani would just stare at her with a blank look on her face.
"You know, I really think she is doing this on purpose," Monica said.
Let me get this straight," Chandler said. "You think our daughter is refusing to speak…out of spite."
"You know how stubborn she is!" Monica exclaimed. "She practically went on a hunger strike yesterday."
"I think most two year olds prefer chicken nuggets to vegetables." Chandler said.
"So do most six year olds," Jack added.
Monica rubbed at her temples before turning back to Dani. She continued trying to get Dani to talk, but she just stared at Monica.
"Honestly," Monica said. "Have you ever meant anyone so stubborn in your entire life?"
When she realized that no one had responded. She turned and saw that Chandler, Jack, and Erica were simply staring at her.
"I-I'm not…" Monica tried but then Chandler just raised his eyebrows at her. "Oh…shut up!"
There were no changes over the next few days. There were never any issues when Monica brought her to the doctor. And she was very grateful for that. But it just seemed like Dani didn't want to talk. Later that night, she ran her hands through her hair as she looked at Dani. "Come on honey. Don't you want to talk?"
Dani looked up from playing with her toys and simply went, "No!"
Chandler and Monica stared at each other before rushing over to Dani. Chandler knelt down next to her. "Dani, did you just say your first word?"
"No!" Dani said again and went back to playing with her toys.
"She's talking AND she's lying!" Chandler said. "She's growing up so fast!"
Monica simply laughed at him while Dani continued saying her first word and her new favorite word.
Monica saw lightening flash across the sky and moved the covers. But before she could get comfortable, she heard another pair of footsteps. Well, two pairs of footsteps. She sighed before climbing out of bed again, walking back over the door. This time she found Jack and Erica at the other side of the doorway.
"You two okay?" Monica asked.
"Uh…yeah," Jack said a little too quickly. "We just…we were…"
"We were checking on Dani," Erica finished his sentence.
"Yes! Exactly we were checking on Dani! Because we thought that the storm would scare her."
"Yeah, it's definitely not because we're scared!" Erica said.
"Yeah, thunderstorms don't scare us at all!" Jack nodded.
"Really?" Monica crossed her arms. They were both lying through their teeth, but she was willing to play along. "Well it's sweet of you two to check on your sister."
At that moment, lightning flashed across the sky again and the thunder was so loud that Monica felt it in her bones. Both Jack and Erica rushed towards her, wrapping themselves around her. As hard as it was for Monica to believe that Dani was already five, it was even harder to believe that the twins were twelve. They would be teenagers next year! Monica was slightly scared about what might happen now that Jack and Erica were older. They could start to lash out or rebel like so many teenagers do. But neither one of them showed any signs at this time. The fact that they still came to her during the thunderstorm definitely calmed Monica's fears.
Monica turned around and saw that Dani had latched tightly onto Chandler, burying her face into his chest.
"Do you two want to spend the night here as well?" She turned and looked down at the twins. They both nodded their heads before rushing over towards the bed. Monica closed the bedroom door before following them. Jack and Erica climbed onto the bed.
"We're gonna have to get a bigger bed soon," Chandler said as Dani crawled into his lap.
Monica smiled at him before she finally climbed back into bed. The kids eventually fell asleep as the storm began to calm. Jack and Erica were both in the middle of the bed, while Dani was curled up beside Chandler.
"You asleep?" Monica asked and she looked up at the ceiling.
"Nope," Chandler replied. "I highly doubt either one of us are sleeping for the rest of the night."
"Just like old times," Monica said.
"I'm surprised that Dani actually came over to me during the storm," Chandler said as he brushed his daughter's hair out of her face. "I thought that she would just stay with you."
"What are you talking about?" Monica asked. "She loves you."
"She likes me," Chandler said. "She follows you around like a shadow."
"She follows these two like a shadow," Monica said as she pointed to the twins. Chandler nodded in agreement as Dani slept soundly next to him.
"I can't believe she's already five," Monica said. "It feels like yesterday we were bringing her back home from the hospital."
"I can't believe the twins are already twelve." Chandler said.
"Don't remind me," Monica said as she rubbed her hand across her face. "When did we get so old?"
"I'm not sure," Chandler said. "I feel like I aged about ten years after Joey moved in."
"We've been through a lot," Monica looked over towards him.
"We sure have."
"I wouldn't have changed anything."
"Neither would I."
She looked over at the clock on the nightstand before turning back over to Chandler. "Hey, happy anniversary."
Chandler grabbed his phone and checked the date. "Oh, look at that. It's May 15th.
"15 years of marriage." Monica said. "We really are getting old."
"What do you think we should do for our anniversary this year?" Chandler asked.
"Well for so many years we kept telling ourselves that we would go on some big trip for our anniversary. Either back to London again or maybe finally go to Paris. But honestly, I think spending the day with you and the kids sounds like a perfect way to celebrate."
"I couldn't agree more."
Monica looked across the bed. She saw Jack and Erica fast asleep in the middle of the bed, both of them buried under the covers. She saw Dani sleeping next to Chandler, her arms sprawled out across the bed. And she saw Chandler smiling softly at her in the dark room. Her prince, her soulmate, her friend.
Yeah, she wouldn't have changed any of it.
Author's Note: Oh my god I completed a multi-chapter fic. I haven't done that since 2018. Special thanks to steelwater, ItsJustKim, klulovespadfoot, Pizzabasedwaterthing, and saltvine2263 for putting up with my nonsense in the discord sever. Once again let me know if you want to join. If the messages aren't going through another thing you could do is send me your discord username and I should be able to send you a link. That might make things easier. Happy Friends Anniversary!
