Chapter 1—Surprising Actions
1
Callen dropped a basketful of laundry at the foot of the stairs, and then joined Nikolai and his Legos. He built a very tall red tower, and then a shorter blue one.
Nikolai face-palmed himself. "Papa! You didn't use the other colors!"
Callen snickered. "I didn't want to."
"Oh, my goodness, Papa!" Nikolai very quickly built a trio of short green and yellow buildings for his father. "Here, Papa."
Callen grinned. "Thank you, baby. Who lives in all these houses?"
"Well," said Nikolai as he thought about it, "the red building is for you and Mama, and the blue building is for me. The other buildings are for the girls."
"Sounds good to me!" Callen said with a smirk.
Nikolai laughed.
2
A few days later, Nikolai became worried about his birthday.
"Mama, can we go to the Arcade for my birthday?"
"You don't want a home party?" she asked him.
"No, Mama! I'm going to be eight!" Nikolai objected. "People who are eight don't have home parties."
Callen snickered. "Yes, they do."
The girls laughed.
"Nuh-uh, Papa," Nikolai contradicted, missing his father's joke completely.
"I'll think about it, Nikolai," answered his mother, with a smirk that matched Callen's.
3
"Papa, when is Mama going to get a new car?" Raisa asked.
"Not until tomorrow. Why?" he said.
"Because we want to go with you," she replied rudely.
"Not happening," he responded. "None of you are coming with us."
"Why?" she persisted.
Callen frowned. "Because I said so! If you keep pestering me, you won't be doing anything this weekend."
"Oh, come on!" she griped.
"Told you," Anya laughed. She wanted to go to the car dealership too, but she knew better than to ask.
"That's no fun!"
"Sure it is," her mother replied. "Staying in your room for the weekend is very fun."
"Hey!"
Anya laughed and laughed. Sometimes, Raisa didn't know when to stop.
4
"Raisa, what was in that big box Papa got?"
Raisa shrugged. "I don't know. They never showed me."
Anya made a face. "It's his box, so technically, they don't have to!" she contradicted.
"They should have. I'm still the boss, you know."
"Get off that, will you? You sound like you're three or four years old!" Anya retorted. "Why do you keep thinking you're the boss when you already know that Papa and Mama are?"
Raisa wilted. She still didn't like that nobody accepted her as the boss.
5
"Do you have all of your ID packed?" Callen asked Anna.
"Yes."
"Even your license?"
She got in his face. "Yes!"
He stepped away from her. "Just checking," he said with a half-smile that turned into a smirk.
She did swing at him, but missed. "Stop it!"
He loved baiting her. He held his hand out, and she took it. He brought her outside to his car.
"You ready, baby?"
"Oh, yes, Papa!"
6
Kira dumped her makeup bag upside down on her bed. She wanted to find something alluring that she could use on her date tonight.
Anya noticed. "You better not!"
"Go away, and stay out of my room!"
Anya shrugged. "Okay, but don't say I didn't warn you!"
"Shut up!"
"Ooooh! I'm telling!" chirped Raisa.
Kira threw a bottle of nailpolish at her. "You go away, too!"
7
Nikolai climbed up on the chair that was permanently perched under the kitchen telephone. He dialed Arkady's number.
"Dedushka, nobody will play with me. Will you?"
"Sure, baby, but not right now. I have appointment."
"Will you come after?"
"Da!"
Nikolai hung up the phone, and then went to turn on the TV. He hated the cracked screen, but he hadn't had any success in convincing his father to get a new one yet. He picked up the remote and scrolled through the roster of TV shows. He finally settled on old episodes of SVU, although he didn't understand most of what they were saying.
8
"Are we there yet?"
Callen burst out laughing. "Are you for real? You know we're not quite there yet. Almost, but not yet. We're going to the Chevrolet lot."
"Chevy? I said I wanted a Ford."
"Yes, you did, but there weren't any you'd like. Just deal with this for a minute, please, Anna."
Several moments later, he pulled into the Chevrolet lot, and parked his car.
"Come on, baby. You got this!" he encouraged. He was very excited, and not a little bit tingly.
"I'm telling you—it better not be a mom-mobile!"
"It's not! It's not! I swear!" He brought her over to the Service Desk, and he explained that he was picking up a new car. The gentleman nodded, and led them over to a very shiny, elegant black car. It was every bit as fancy as Callen remembered. He peered in the windows.
Anna stepped back to look at the big car. She liked it better than she was willing to admit. She walked over to the windows on the opposite side, and peeked in. She liked what she saw. There were enough seats to include Arkady or Roberta, or both, if necessary.
She glanced at Callen, and could tell that he was getting worried about her reaction. She didn't like that he was uncomfortable, so she went over to him, and put her arms around him.
Leaning on his back, she whispered, "Thank you, baby."
9
Callen leaned into her. "You're welcome. Anna, do you really like it?"
She moved so that she was in front of him. "Yes, Callen, I do. Will you come for a ride with me?"
He hugged her. "Of course I will. You ready?"
"Yes."
He checked the papers one more time, and the salesman was satisfied. He handed the keys to Callen, as well as the receipt and other pertinent papers.
Callen looked at Anna. He began to jump up and down. "We own a new car!"
Anna grabbed him by the shoulders, and jumped with him. "Yes, we do! Can I please drive it home?"
"Of course!" He stopped jumping and gave her the keys. "Let's go, baby!"
10
She drove around the block, and finally pulled into a gas station. Callen gave the attendant his card, and then they returned to the lot to get his car. He followed her all the way home.
At home, Anna met him as he got out of his car. "Can we please sneak in?"
"Sure," he agreed, knowing full-well that they would be bombarded by their kids.
They got as far as the couch before Nikolai jumped on them.
"Mama gots a car!" he shrieked.
"What's that?" Anya asked.
"She gots a car!" Nikolai yelled.
The girls crowded into the front window.
"It's black!" shouted Kira.
"I want a ride in it," Raisa said.
Callen heard the emphasis in her tone. "Nope. We all go, or nobody goes."
Raisa made a face.
Anya squinted her eyes at her. "Save your brat behavior for your friends at school. We don't have time for it here!"
"Raisa, you will not spoil my fun with my new car," her mother said softly. "If you want to come with us, fine. If you want to stay home, that's fine, too."
19
They all herded outside.
"Mama, your car is so pretty," Kira said.
"Mama, why is it so tall?" Nikolai asked.
"So we can all fit together," Anna said. "Nikolai, you get in first."
"Okay, Mama." He climbed into the SUV, and made his way to the back seats.
Kira followed him, and sat in the back seat with him.
"Mama, this is so cool!"
"Yaa!" agreed Nikolai.
"I wanted to sit there," complained Raisa.
"You are about to sit on your bed," her father offered. "Get in the car!"
But she didn't move. Anya climbed in around her, and then Callen sat in the front passenger's seat.
Anna turned on the car, and slowly backed out of the driveway. A huge grin filled her face.
"Papa, I love it!"
A short while later, Raisa was still standing where they had left her. Anna was shocked, but said nothing.
11
Later that day, Kira did go out with JD. He stayed in his car, and did not honk for her. She kept her eye on the window, and went outside when she noticed him.
She got settled, and closed her seatbelt.
"Where are we going?"
"Nowhere in particular," JD said, pulling over to a secluded patch of road. He laid his seatback slightly, but left enough room for him to stroke Kira's thigh for a few minutes.
Kira realized that she didn't like the way it made her feel. She slapped his arm. "Don't touch me! Keep your damn hands to yourself!"
JD smacked her face, with most of the wallop landing across her mouth and nose. "You don't tell me what to do! If I want to touch you, I will." He reached around her and grabbed her right breast, and squeezed her.
Kira reacted wildly. "JD, I told you not to touch me, and I mean it! Keep your hands to yourself!"
"How about you walk home from here?" he offered as a way of punishment.
"Idi na khuy, ty tupaya zadnitsa! I think maybe I will!" She opened the car door, and then grabbed her backpack. "Do not call me ever again!" (Go fuck yourself, you stupid ass!)
Kira headed to the brightest lights she saw, which turned out to be a railroad depot. She entered the station, and then called her father. She began to cry because she knew he would be upset with her. She sat down on a bench, and waited for him.
12
Callen drove up, and parked in the drop-off lane. He flew inside, and gently tapped Kira.
"Let's go, baby," he said, taking her by the hand. He carried her backpack, and tossed it into the back seat.
Kira buckled herself in the front.
"What happened, Kira?"
"JD is a bastard!"
"Oh, boy," said her father. "We'll talk when we get home."
"Yes, Papa," she said, crying harder.
13
"Anna!" Callen hollered when they got home. "Can you come, please?"
She came up from the cellar quickly. "What's wrong?"
"I'm not sure, but my gut is telling me it's no good. Will you please talk to Kira?"
Anna's eyes opened wide. "What happened?"
A dark look crossed Callen's face. "She went out without telling us."
"Oh, God," Anna said.
14
"Where is she?"
Callen pointed to the ceiling, and Anna nodded. She handed him her laundry basket, and then went upstairs to tend to Kira.
She knocked on Kira's door. "Can I come in, please?"
"I don't care, Mama," Kira said, sounding sorry for herself.
Anna opened the door to find her daughter lying on her bed, curled up in a ball. Her stomach flip-flopped.
"Sit up, please," she said.
"I don't want to," Kira answered.
Anna groaned. She was used to contrary behavior from her temperamental daughter. "Kira. Sit. Up."
Grumbling, Kira sat up. "Why?"
Anna frowned. "So I can talk to you. Baby, what happened? Did JD touch you?"
"He tried, Mama, but I slapped him!"
"Then what?"
"He didn't want to bring me home. He was more pissed than anything."
Anna sat on the bed next to her oldest child. "Baby, you need to talk, or we can't fix this."
"Mama, I don't want to talk about it," Kira retorted.
"Oh, boy. Kira, don't you realize how serious this could have become?" She shuddered as memories of Kudgelton surfaced.
"But he didn't do anything," Kira insisted.
"Did he try to rape you?"
"Oh, hell, no, Mama! All he did was stroke my thigh and squeeze my breast."
"That isn't nothing! Why would you let him do that? It's still a form of sexual abuse," Anna said. "No guy is allowed to touch you for any reason, no matter how nice he seems."
"Mama, that's so dumb."
Anna took umbrage. "No, it isn't. Years ago, I sent a guy to jail for touching me."
Kira looked at her mother, shocked speechless. "Why?"
Anna glared at Kira. "He wasn't Papa! He had no business touching me, and you can certainly talk to Papa and Uncle Sam about it if you want to!
"Kira, your body is private. It's not for anyone except you or your partner when you get married. Ever. That means that nobody can touch you."
"Mama, you've been telling us this for our whole lives. What difference does it make? He wanted to."
"Kira, he wanted to?! What about what you wanted? It's more important than what he wanted! It sounds as if he wasn't taught proper behavior toward girls. Neither was that SOB I had arrested all those years ago."
"No! No more!" Kira thumped down on her bed, and turned her back on her mother. "Go away!"
Hurt stung Anna, but she got up and went downstairs in search of Callen.
5
"Where's Papa?" she asked the first child she saw.
"Downstairs," Raisa said, as she was about to kick Nikolai's buildings.
"Spasibo," Anna replied. "Raisa, don't you dare kick his buildings!" She made her way down to the laundry room, and went straight to Callen and hugged him.
He hugged her in return. "What happened?"
Anna clung to him. "She wouldn't talk, and could not see how serious this is. She figures it doesn't matter. I even told her about Kudgelton. And Raisa wanted to kick Nikolai's buildings. "
He leaned his head on hers. "She better not! Half of them are mine ! Was that wise?"
"Yours?" Anna looked at him funny. "Probably not. I did tell her to talk to you and Sam about it."
"Yes. I played Legos for a little while before," he answered. "Oh, God. Anna, we might have to take the ugly road with this one."
"I know."
"But, we'll pick up the pieces if we need to," he comforted her.
Anna nodded, but she didn't say anything else. "I'm going upstairs for now. Probably for dinner, too."
"I get it." He gave her a kiss, and then released her. He watched her go up the stairs. Even though it didn't show in her demeanor, he sensed her feelings, and felt bad for her.
6
"So? What happened?" Anya asked.
"Nothing."
"Come on, Kira!"
"Nothing. He touched my breast and my leg."
Anya glared at her. "That's not nothing. I wouldn't want some damn guy touching me!"
"He wanted to."
"Are you crazy? Did you want to?"
"No. Of course not!"
"Then why are you saying it doesn't matter?!" Then she leaned over and looked at Kira's face. "He hit you?"
