Chapter One/Woodbury
Shane, my sister Amy, my daughter Avery, and I had been living in Woodbury for about six months when Merle, Minton, Martinez, and the Governor moved in.
Shane and Amy, who are a couple, share an apartment. I live in the one right beside theirs with my daughter.
I was watching for walkers when the Governor entered our town. They just drove in as if they belonged. I still don't know how they got the gate open, but I'm guessing they had been working on it for a while. There looked to be atleast eight or more man.
" I am the Governor, and these are my men," a middle-aged man with light brown hair and blue eyes said, getting out of the truck.
"Thats not a name. Its a title. I am Andrea. Normally, we don't just let anyone into our group," I said carefully.
"how many are in your group?" he asks.
"Only my sister, her boyfriend, my daughter, and I," I said, knowing we were outnumbered.
"So four? I think the best thing for us is to join forces. I am not really about hurting women and children," he said in almost a threatening way. He placed his arm on my shoulder. I allow him to leave his hand there for a few minutes and then I move.
"I suppose your group could join us temporarily. Shane won't be happy about this," I muttered, knowing that a group of four wouldn't stop them.
"Shane is your leader, I guess," he says, following me. The rest of his group start unloading a lot of weapons. They may kill us, I thought.
"We sort of share the responsibility. But yes," I replied, looking into his blue eyes.
"Looking forward to meeting him. I'm sure he'll make a great addition to our team."
"Shane isn't really a team player type of guy. But as long as you keep to yourself, we shouldn't have any trouble," I said, avoiding his blue eyes that stared at me.
"Understood. I am sure I can persuade him. Merle is going to take over look out for you. Would you like to show me around?" he says in almost a whisper.
"Have I seen you somewhere before?" I said, almost blushing. Those eyes, that light brown hair, his southern accent, and just the way he walked were all too familiar.
"Perhaps," he says, trying to be mysterious.
"Didn't you work with me about four years ago in digital at Walmart? I was a personal shopper. Your name is Philip Blake. You were in management. I used to go to your house parties," I said, suddenly remembering.
His hand was in mine now, and I definitely didn't want to be holding his hand.
"Guilty. Sorry about my behavior. That night at the work party, I wasn't a gentleman," he said softly.
"We were all drunk. And honestly, it worked out for me. You will have to meet my daughter, Avery Noel Harrison," I said.
Soon as I said her name, Avery came running up to me with my sister close behind. Looking at her, I knew he would notice how much she looked like him. Biologically, he was her father. But Avery was my child, mine alone. She has his light brown hair and blue eyes, I know he notices. Anyone would.
"Is she three years old?" The Governor asked, finally letting go of my hand.
"Exactly. How did you know?," Amy said, looking up at the Governor.
"This is my sister, Amy" I said as they shook hands.
"Nice to meet you," Amy says, giving him her sweetest smile. She is so beautiful with her long, straight, blonde hair and blue-green eyes.
"Likewise," he replies staring at Avery.
"Amy, take Avery to the apartment for some breakfast. I have some muffins on the table. I am going to talk to the Governor alone," I said, not liking the way he was staring at my daughter.
Amy nods, leading Avery away. The Governor stares at them.
"You told me that you had an abortion. I gave you the money for the surgery," he says after they are gone.
"I thought I was going to. I hadn't planned on having her. But I changed my mind the day of. I had just finished law school and I was twenty-five. I could afford her. I wanted her. So I decided it was the perfect opportunity to have my own baby," I said honestly.
"Didn't you think to mention this to me?" he says, looking frustrated.
" I wanted to make all the decisions for Avery. I didn't want to share her with anyone. I wanted all those moments to myself. I never needed anyone to help me, " I admitted.
" I want to spend some time with my daughter, " he answers, ignoring me.
"Are you concerned about Avery with everything going on? It seems odd. You never called me after you thought I had the abortion to check on me. I did get those stupid yellow roses. Looking at them honestly pissed me off." I said, frustrated. He shouldn't be here. We worked hard to secure this place, and his group would ruin everything.
" I was only trying to help, didn't know what to do. Most girls I date don't come to me telling me they're having an abortion. I guess flowers were a stupid decision. My group wants to help now too. We can make this place safer for your daughter and sister, " he said, touching my shoulder again.
"You can have dinner with our group tonight. Shane has to find out about this sooner or later," I said, knowing I would be seeing him around.
"Perfect. I am going to help my men get settled, and I'll come to your place once the sun goes down," he says as if he allready knows where it is.
"Its that apartment over there," I said pointing to where I lived.
"See you soon, sweetheart," He says placing his lips on my cheek. He walks off and I can still feel his lips on my skin.
