Here is the 60th installment.

Yes, this actually made it to 60, and there is much more to come. Warning ahead of time. 61 is going to be a BEAST, so it also may take some time to get out.

Hope you enjoy.

Notes now live at the end of the chapter, so here is the obligatory, now on with the show.

Sitting in the idling car, Darr looked into the back seat. "Where to?"

Nick smiled. "Well, we're getting to it later than I expected, so I don't think we'll make the very short Saturday hours at the banks. We will just have to try that a different day. Let's go get something to eat and think." Turning to Mike. "Where would be a place to be seen by the enemy, where they would be also disinclined to make any overt moves?"

Mike grinned. "Oh, that's perfect. Should we call the girls?"

Nick nodded. "Depending on where, yes. Where are we going?"

Mike looked up at Darr. "The Luna Grill, Darr."

Darr nodded. "Yes sir!" Turning to the front and getting the car moving.

Mike pulled his phone and dialed. "Hi, love. … Have you and Judy had lunch yet? … Great. Need you and Judy to meet us at The Luna Grill. Don't worry, Jason will know where. … Great, see you there. Love you." Looking over to Nick. "They'll meet us there."

Knowing, but wanting to understand why Mike made the suggestion, Nick turned to Mike. "Sounds good. So what is so special about this place?"

"As if you don't know. Simply. It is where most of the council takes their meals while in session, and even when not, as it is right next to the council building. It basically acts as the cafeteria for the council as they can have their meals charged to their council accounts. Because of this, any wolf that wants to interact with and influence the council will find themselves there. Purely by coincidence, of course."

"Of Course. I'm sure you cannot just walk in, except that you, as Designate, can."

Mike nodded. "That's right. I can, as can my First, my mate, and her First. Along with our guests."

Nick chuckled darkly. "They're going to freak out, having a tiger, rabbit, and fox in there. This is going to be fun. Council members, and the high and powerful. Yes, this is perfect. You need to see if your parents can join us as well, but have them arrive after us."

Mike dialed his phone again. "Mom… Nick and I are wondering if you wouldn't mind meeting us for lunch at The Luna Grill. … Yes I'm serious. … No, I don't know what he is planning, but this is Nick. … Great, he says he wants you to arrive after us and we should be there in about… Darr?"

"We'll be there in fifteen to twenty, depending on lights."

"Catch that? … Great. We'll see you in about forty five, then." Hanging up, Mike turned to Nick. "I hope you know what you are doing. Mom raises a legitimate point. This is going to be shocking to some of these old wolves, and they may not take kindly to it. Introducing you and I to the council was what the meeting we're supposed to attend tomorrow is for."

Nick nodded. "Yes, and they are prepared for that, their minds already hardened against any arguments we might make without harsh action. With this, we should catch them flat pawed. It is audacious, aggressive, and confident. We may just be able to turn a few to our side by letting them see us. It shows you and Lizz off in what is, ostensibly, a non-formal setting. We're going to let them see you and Lizz. See Darr and the Nightwolves. See Judy and I, and your parents. They will already know about Darr, and the reprieve you have granted him."

"A reprieve that he got only because you, Nick, had the foresight to see past the moment."

"Yes, and you picked up on why, right away. Don't sell yourself short. Being Alpha is just as much recognizing the benefits of something presented by someone else, such as your First, as it is about coming up with it yourself. You're not all knowing, nor expected to be. You are expected to consider what is presented, and take the advice from your First, Beta's, and others, and then make the decision in the best interest of the pack as a whole."

"That's what mom and dad have both said. I'm glad I have you as my First, Nick."

Darr pulled into a parking spot right in front of the door to The Luna Grill. Getting out, he walked around and opened the door for Mike who stepped out and is immediately flanked by Gloria, Garret appearing as Nick stepped out of the car behind them. After locking the car, Darr leads the way towards the door, holding it open for the group and then following them in behind Garret.

The Maitre'D looked up and smiled seeing the wolves, his smile faltering upon seeing Nick. "Designate, how wonderful of you to grace our establishment… Who are your guests today?" Clearly struggling to prevent a frown from gracing his muzzle as he gave Nick a suspicious look.

Mike smiled and ignored the frown. "This is my First, Nick Wilde, and our guards, along with Darr, our assistant. My mate and her First, as well as their guards will be joining us shortly, as well as my parents if they are able to get free. We will therefore need the very large central table."

With a visible, though not audible gulp, the Maitre'D nodded. "Of course. If you can wait just a moment while we make sure it is ready for you."

Mike nodded. "Of course. We totally understand, and it gives the rest of our party a chance to arrive."

"Of course, sir." The Maitre'D nodded at the clear life line he was being given to only have to escort them once and avoid possible issues when the other half of the group arrived. He quickly left the podium and headed into the kitchen. Muffled shouting could then be heard causing Nick to snicker.

Mike looked down at him. "What?"

Still snickering slightly, Nick shook his head. "Simple. They're freaking out over how they are going to feed a rabbit without her freaking out in an otherwise predator only restaurant. The chef is having a fit. I'll be right back." With that, Nick slipped into the kitchen. A loud shocked shout followed shortly after by Nick's laughter. The others watched as a still chuckling Nick stepped back out of the kitchen. "Problem solved. The chef, Dayvid, doesn't believe me, but says he'll owe me big if Judy proves to be the meat eater we all know she is."

Mike chuckled. "Sounds good, Nick."

They waited about ten minutes, the Maitre'D watching them, and Nick specifically. Seeing the ladies pull up, Nick rolled his eyes as he caught the Maitre'D giving him the furry eyeball, again. "Seriously. I am the First of the Designate. I am also a ZPD officer. Do you really think I am going to do anything to put the Designate at risk? Are you fully unaware of what my mate and I pulled off only a few days ago to ensure their position and the position of their pups? Or are you so narrow minded and blinded by prejudice that you cannot see that?"

Nick was not quiet and the Maitre'D looked around nervously and speaking quietly. "It is not that, First. My apologies. You are quite correct. What you have already done shows your fitness for your position, species notwithstanding. I am simply not used to interacting with a fox who one could consider… Uhm…"

Nick smirked. "Trust worthy? Honorable?" Still not being quiet. "You'll find that foxes are their stereotypes because mammals do not give them the chance or opportunity to be anything else." He grinned seeing Judy and the others enter. "You will find that foxes are exceedingly loyal, if you were to bother to befriend one."

Judy stepped up with a grin. "Hi love. The Maitre'D giving you a hard time?"

Nick smiled and gave her a quick peck on the cheek. "Not as much, just giving me the furry eye."

Judy smiled brightly up at the Maitre'D. "You'll find that foxes, because of how other mammals have treated them, are by far some of the most intelligent mammals. They do not let others in easily, but if you earn their trust and respect, there is not a better mammal to have as your friend." Looping her arm around Nick's. "I ended up falling in love with mine, and am bearing his kits."

The Maitre'D looked down at Judy in shock, then up at Lizz, his eyes going wide. "Madam Regent!" Bowing to Lizz and Mike as they stood next to each other, arm in arm. "Designate, Madam Regent. Forgive my earlier reactions. We were not expecting you. You honor our establishment. Your table is ready. Please follow me."

Turning, the Maitre'D quickly led them to a large central table that easily sat everyone with plenty of room for others to join. Nick and Judy sat opposite Mike and Lizz, with one seat separating them from the head of the table, and the two seats at the head of the table left open for when Mike's parents would arrive. Darr sat two seats down from Mike and Lizz, followed by the Nightwolves on either side.

They pursued the menu as they discussed what they were observing silently amongst themselves.

M: Okay, what are you up to, Nick? You were not quiet when you challenged the Maitre'D.

N: Hey, it's all good. He's an ally, just can't be too open about it given his position. Judy, what are you thinking of having?

J: I'm drawn towards the salmon, but I have a weakness, as you know, to shrimp, and it also sounds divine.

M: Both are exquisite. They have an ocean sampler that includes both, along with a few other things. As for the Maitre'D, I was hopping he would be on our side. That's good. In his position he could be a really good resource for information.

J: Now you're thinking like an alpha, Mike.

L: Well, I'm definitely going to do the sampler. However, you best know I'm going to taste that chicken you have talked about. We are getting a lot of looks.

N: Good, that's why we are here. It's why we have the open seats on either side of us. Once we order, the hope is to draw in some of the council for conversation. This is where you come in, Mike. You're going to need to call out to those you think might be on the fence, on our side, and a few that are going to be hard core opposed. We need to pull them in, chat them up. This isn't the council chamber, it is over food.

M: Yeah, should invite them over for dinner once Lizz has given birth.

J: That's good. You wolves and your food. Almost as bad as foxes.

N: What are you trying to say?

Judy laughed. "I'm saying, Nick. That you foxes and your courtship meals, and putting such value on food, preparing food with a prospective mate being one of your biggest date ideas."

Nick frowned. "Hey! I did more than just that, but it is part of how we determine that you are worth our time. It isn't even about your ability to cook, though I do not know a fox that can't. No. It is about how you cook with the mammal you're dating and considering. Since we only get one shot at it. It is as important as knowing if you are a slob, how clean you keep your den, and other things."

Judy's laugh lightened. "I know, Nick. I loved cooking with you. It was fun, and just proved how well we work together."

With a wide grin, Nick laughed along with Judy. "I really enjoyed it while we were dating, and still do. We make a good team no matter what we do."

A very old wolf with silvery grey and white fur walked up, the white clearly a result of age and not his natural color. "Forgive the intrusion, but what do you mean you only get one shot?"

M: Senior council member, Trev Joehan. One of the three most senior council members, and has overseen the council under three alphas. He's nearly a hundred, and will most definitely be a fence sitter right up until he casts his vote.

Glancing up with a smile, Nick motions to the chair next to him, closest to where the alphas would sit. "Senior Council Member, Jeohan. Please, sit. I… That is, we, would be honored to have you join us, even if briefly."

Smiling, the council member nodded. "I wouldn't want to intrude."

With a wide smile, Mike replied. "You would hardly be intruding. Though you may have to forgive us a moments distraction when the waiter comes to take our orders."

Taking the offered seat, Council Member Joehan sighs. "Ah. You got the good chairs, too. I fear I'm not much longer for this world, though I do hope to reach my century."

Judy smiled widely. "Well, we certainly hope you do as well. Few wolves, or any mammals for that matter, manage a full century. You must have seen so much in your life, and to still have your mind so sharp as well. You must have also lived very well."

With a light chuckle, the council member looked past Nick to Judy. "Well, I wouldn't say that. I'm just blessed with good genes. I've not worked out a lot, not eaten especially well, and have a very, very unhealthy addiction to chocolate and cheese. I think it is mostly that I learned early not to stress about things too much and to keep my mind active. Which turns me back to you." Looking to Nick. "What did you mean?"

Giving a warm smile, Nick set his menu down. "Just what I said, but let me explain." Glancing at Judy. "I'll have the salmon, since I know you want the shrimp, and will just steal a few bites while you are at it."

Judy gave Nick a brilliant grin. "You know I will."

Nick then turned his full attention to the council member. "It's part of fox genetics. We only get one shot at a mate. We will date like any other mammal, but if we don't at least feel some connection to the person we are dating, we end it. No hard feeling, because we all understand it. It has to be the right mammal, because once we commit, that's it. We don't get another chance. I don't mean that we have a cultural position against finding a new mate, but we are physically, emotionally, and mentally incapable.

Once we have found that mammal that we just fit with, there is what is called imprinting. Some wolves, and a few other mammals have this as well, though not as common outside of vulpines. It means that, if we lose our mate, we lose a piece of ourselves that often has us following our mate into death by only a few days, no matter how young we are. It is only the strongest, those with kits still in the mix, or the love and support of family, that will survive such a loss.

Vixens have it a bit better, but only just. Some can find a new mate, but it is rare even then. So that is what I mean. I only got one shot, and when I started dating Judy, it was already way too late for me."

Judy beamed at Nick. "Way too late for me too, Slick. My family has strong instincts like that as well. I know it is even rarer in prey, but we do. Oh…" Looking past Nick to the council member. "Nick and I both suffered terribly during our first separation, long before we both realized what we were feeling. We had fallen for each other right after we met."

The council member smiled. "That is something I had heard about foxes, but not something I had confirmation of. Very interesting. Even more so that you two are together." Indicating Judy. "I had heard rumors of that as well, but who would have believed it? I suppose it makes more sense how you two manage to work so well together. Your ability to close cases is astonishing. I'm still amazed at a rabbit able to sit so comfortably and without fear in a place like this, and what is this about ordering the shrimp?"

Judy grinned, handing the waiter the menus having just ordered. "Yes. I have eaten protein since I was little. In my drive to become a cop, something no rabbit has ever done, at least not a big city cop. I had to push my body to levels no normal rabbit could reach. I hit a plateau when I was about fourteen, and made my parents take me to the doctor. He advised that in order to go father, I had to eat more protein. He recommended a bunch of beans and other such sources.

I was, however, friends with most of the predators in town, and my best friend at the time was a cougar. He always had fish jerky on him, and I snuck some when he wasn't looking. I liked it. So I harassed him until he started bringing me predator protein bar, more of the jerky, etc… At which point I blew through the physical plateau, and since I seemed to have no issues digesting it, I added more and more to my diet to keep going. It is also part of the reason the doc said I was able to conceive." rubbing her belly gently. "They are Nick's. Confirmed hybrids of a fox and a bunny."

Council member Joehan looked at her in shock. "Clearly I misheard. You are saying that your pups, or kits in your case, are half fox?"

Nick nodded. "Yep. Just as the pups Lizz is carrying are half wolf, half tiger. The doctor confirms that they are healthy. Though in both cases, they cannot tell us a hard due date."

"No doubt because of the mixed genetics. I was a physician, amongst other things in my long life." Looking across the table to Mike, the council member smiled. "So, Designate. I saw the photos and video of your wedding. A smart move. Ensures the position of your mate and your pups are locked in so that those who might stand against you and question you have fewer legs to stand upon. No questions about their legitimacy can be raised now."

Mike gave a nod and smiled. "I wish I could take full credit for that. In truth I must blame my mate and my Firsts, for that. I just wanted to give my mate the wedding she deserved. It is Nick and Judy that realized the precarious position that Lizz and I found ourselves in."

"Because you hid the relationship?"

"Yes. There are plenty of excuses I could make, but my reasoning was to protect her from the nightmare that my brother, Ed, and his mate were put through. I'm just glad that both of our parents figured it out early on and were only waiting for us to reveal it. That, and our Firsts and closest friends, Nick and Judy, forcing us to face things. They helped us, stood by us, and their support is what made the decision for us both that they should be our Firsts. While they may not be wolves, they are both very knowledgeable due to being ZPD officers, and their ability as shown in their case work to look beyond the surface has proven invaluable. As the wedding they put together in a matter of a few hours, shows."

Council member Joehan frowned. "What do you mean, a few hours?"

Lizz chuckled. "That is something that isn't in the stories. You see, we were attending family dinner, when the discussion moved to our status, Mike and I, as mates, his position as designate and how that affected me and the cubs. Nick and Judy hit on a realization and solution, and in the course of a few hours, put together the entire thing.

They arranged the flowers from the Otterton's for basically free. They were going on a family vacation and would have simply had to throw away the flowers. Instead we got to use them for the price of them being able to use photos of the arrangements and such in their advertisements. Same with the photographer. He did the entire thing for the cost of being allowed to use select shots in his advertising. Same with the food and entertainment, which was the same mammal, the new owner of Therus.

The venue was one of the back gardens of the Wolford estate, transportation of the officiant and a few others was handled by a friend of Nick's for the promise of paying for gas, and getting him into some sort of driving competition. I had no idea a sloth could drive like that."

Nick laughed. "Flash is in fact one of the best drivers I know. I'd love to arrange a legal street race between him and Judy. I think it would be close and not a sure thing either way."

Judy nodded. "Truth. Flash is good, the only problem being that he likes to drive fast, even off the track. The officiant was a friend of Nick's and just like the rest, did it as a favor to Nick and in exchange for getting to use pics from the wedding as part of his business."

Smiling, Nick continued. "Though there is the agreement that any photos used must first be cleared through Judy or I, Mike and Lizz, and the Alphas. Thus ensuring no unflattering photos got used. Even the reporting that you have seen happened in exchange for exclusive rights to the story, and Judy, I, Mike, and Lizz, along with the Alphas reviewed everything prior to publication. Not that I didn't trust the reporter, but... they are a reporter for the society pages after all, friend or not."

Council member Joehan gave an appreciative nod and smile. "Well. I must say I am even more impressed now than before and understand why you have selected these two mammals as your Firsts." Glancing at Lizz. "You are beautiful my dear. I'm not into non-wolves myself, but that doesn't mean I cannot appreciate when another mammal is attractive. You are definitely that. As are you Miss Judy, or is it Mrs. Wilde?"

Judy grinned with a chuckle. "It's actually HoppsWilde, no hyphen."

Nick nodded as well. "I am WildeHopps. In both our families there is a mix of options, with no preference either way. Her mother took her fathers name, thus Hopps, as did my mother. However, My aunt on my mothers side had her mate take her name. It all depends on how you are feeling in relation to the family and such. Judy didn't even have to take my name at all, but chose to and I felt it only fair that I reciprocate. Then again, it does fit Judy, as she Hopps Wilde, often." The poor joke at the end earning him a punch and scathing glare, along with chuckles from Lizz and Mike.

"I see. Fascinating, and far more enlightened than most mammals."

Another older wolf stepped up to the table with a deep frown. "Council member Joehan, why are you sitting with these deviants?" Being less than quiet about their statement.

Joehan frowned deeply. "Having a conversation and learning about the Designate, his mate, as well as their Firsts, and learning a few things about them. Unlike mammals like you, counselor Relti, who revel in their own ignorance and choose to make decisions based upon your lack of knowing things, I prefer to make informed decisions. It is fine to come into a situation with some idea of where you land on a subject, but one must adjust according to new information, not reject it outright until you are hit over the head with it."

Taking a shocked step back. "What are you saying?"

Joehan frowned deeper. "Simple, Relti. You are on the council only based upon the providence of your family and for no other reason. You have not earned the position, and are the literal definition of a dumb wolf. You are the stereotype that other mammals think of when they think of a dumb dumb wolf. My gods, mammal. How many howls have you started, in the council chambers, simply because you cannot control your most base instincts?

Your opinion on things doesn't matter and should be ignored by any other member of the council. Had I the power, I would have you stripped of your voting rights, so you can join the likes of the Heedith and Feltro families. I am simply glad that no wolfess ever saw any value in you and your line ends with you. That any pups you did have will never know who their father was, and should they exist, are better for it."

Backing up aghast, Relti looked over the table in shock. "You cannot be serious."

Joehan smiled wickedly, ensuring his voice carried. "I am one hundred percent serious. Willful and deliberate ignorance like yours only serves to stifle the pack and does nothing but harm. Anyone that sides with you is either using your ignorance for their own ends, or deserves to end up with you in the trash bin of history as nothing more than a footnote about a once great family that gave into ignorance in order to maintain power and ensured their own demise."

Laughing darkly, Relti glowered at the table. "Well, you have nothing to worry about. I will ensure this inter scum have no chance to taint the pack. The alphas acceptance of them has reached the point that I will be sponsoring a no confidence vote, so you can be assured they won't have to worry about their position in the pack or as the Designate, very soon. I am not the only one that thinks this, I can assure you, most of the council thinks as I do."

"Relti, your ignorance truly knows no bounds. Be gone."

The Alphas walked up to the table with frowns on both their faces. "Council member Relti, what bigotry are you spouting now?"

Putting on a self-satisfied grin, Relti scoffed at the Alphas. "Just making sure it is understood that your days as Alphas, as well as the inter scum that is your son, have your days in this pack numbered. You may be Alpha now, but you will not be for much longer."

Victoria laughed. "Oh, I'm sure there are a few that have given you assurances that I can assure you are equally hollow and will not be acted on, just like every time your ignorant ass has tried it." Turning to Joehan. "Trev, so good to see you. How are you feeling?"

"I'm quite well, actually. Saw the vet yesterday and they actually reduced some of my medications, saying that the new diet and exercise Routine is having the desired effect. It really only going for a proper walk every morning, but it is working. He even threatened me with another ten years or more."

Arron laughed. "Oh, perish the thought. You mean we will have to put up with you for another decade?"

Joehan laughed as well. "At least. I might even make it long enough to oversee the ascension of your son as Alpha. Especially if he keeps the company of mammals such as his First. I see why you have so readily accepted them as Firsts, and his mate as well. They are good mammals. Smart, quick on their feet and thoughts, and not at all their stereotypes." Turning back to Lizz and MIke as the Alphas took their seats. "You mentioned something about Therus?"

Lizz nodded with a smile. "Yes, the new owner and his mate catered the wedding. He also has a side business doing the music for weddings, receptions, and other parties. If you get the chance, and the vet will let you, I cannot recommend their burritos strongly enough, especially the shrimp and chicken burrito. That little fox is a gourmet chef."

Judy chuckled. "Fin is in fact a graduate of culinary school and uses us as his test subjects when he comes up with something new. The shrimp and chicken burrito was one of those and became a literal addiction even before I got pregnant."

Nick nodded. "Definitely something to try. Now, you mentioned something about being a cheese lover? Are you a member of a CLA chapter?"

Giving Nick a confused look, his head sliding to the side. "CLA?"

Grinning, Nick nodded as his tail began to wag and Judy rolled her eyes. "Here we go."

Just grinning wider, Nick ignored Judy. "Yes. CLA. Stands for Cheese Lovers Anonymous. Despite the name, which is very tongue in cheek, it is a very serious group, if you are a lover of cheese. There are multiple chapters throughout the city, and we get together to discuss, rate, and sample cheese. There are even blind taste testing competitions at the annual city-wide gathering. Awards for the mammal with the ability to, on taste and smell alone, identify the most cheeses with the most accuracy. I hold the current title. I'd be happy to host you at the next meeting. It's is next month, the nineteenth, and is in the mid-afternoon so that all mammals can join without being put off their sleep schedule too much."

Joehan grinned. "Oh, that sounds wonderful. Yes, please let me know the full when and where, and I will be there. It doesn't cost anything, does it?"

Nick shrugged. "That depends. If you become a member, there is the annual fee, and donations at any given meeting are always welcome, but the cheese presented at a meeting, and at the annual convention is free with a few exceptions. There are always high end cheeses that may have a small cost to try, some more than others. Of course, you are free to bring a cheese you found to share with other members, though some will charge a small bit to help compensate if it is a particularly expensive or designer cheese.

Also, before you ask. Anyone that brings a named cheese, or tries to claim a name to a cheese, is banned for life and turned over to the authorities. The one exception being cheese made from a mammal's own milk. Though we do not have a lot of prey in the CLA, there are a few. There are even some that dabble in making cheese themselves, though again, they are not allowed to name who the milk came from beyond the animal species."

"Unless, I assume, it is another member that says that they gave so and so the milk for the cheese in question."

Nick nodded with a smile. "Exactly right. Though that identification is limited to the meetings only, strict privacy is demanded and enforced. This is especially true when someone comes up with a new cheese recipe that they decide to sell."

Judy jumped in with a laugh. "Nick's ability to identify a cheese type, source mammal, and even link it to milk from a specific mammal has proven surprisingly useful. If also slightly disturbing. That said, while he is supposedly a master cheese maker, he is also forbidden from making cheese at the house. It is not a scent free process."

Smiling, Nick sighed with a shake of his head. "This is true, with the job of being a cop, and other requirements on my time, I no longer have the time needed to oversee it."

Three more council members joined the group, one taking the seat between the alphas and Mike and Lizz, the other two sitting in the two seats between Lizz and Mike and the rest of the group. The food being delivered at that point.

Joehan smiled, seeing the food, then frowned seeing the plate appear in front of himself. "I don't remember ordering anything."

Mike grinned as he sliced off a piece of his chicken and held the fork out to Lizz. "Yes, and yet it would be rude for us to eat without you having at least something small. So I ordered a simple appetizer for you." He then turned to the other wolves that had joined them. "Council Hearth, Greev, Ferro, are you hungry? We'll happily call the waiter back."

Ferro, a chocolate brown wolf who had sat near the Alphas waved away the question. "Thank you, but no need. I have just finished eating myself."

Greev, a younger black wolf waved the question away as well, while Hearth sitting next to Greev, a silver wolf with a streak of red on his muzzle shook his head and replied. "Thank you, Designate, but we are more than fine. I am interested in you, your mate, and Firsts. Very unique picks, all around. I'm actually very glad you showed up here today. It gives us a chance to meet you all outside of the structured and ridgid council chamber where there is no chance to get a real feel of the mammal in question any more than a written report about an explosion cannot give you a true feel for it in the moment."

Mike glanced at Nick who returned a knowing smirk, before turning back to Greev and Hearth. Nick chuckled. "What? This is the very reason you have Firsts. They exist outside the pack hierarchy for a reason. Considering you are mated to a tigress, who is going to bear you pups, you need some perspectives that are a bit farther afield than your typical wolf. Yet both Judy and I are also well versed in a lot of wolf cultural specifics, which allows us to move more easily in that world on your behalf."

Mike smiled and motioned towards Nick. "And again, proving why I chose him as my First."

Greev nodded. "I hear that you have already had a challenge. One that resulted in you ending up with a thrall."

Mike nodded. "I would not call Darr a thrall. His position is in flux really. We made the decision to give him a chance. A decision that has proven to be the right one. Once he was isolated away from the wolves whose entire reason for being there was to influence him and turn him into a weapon, he realized just how badly he screwed up. It was a challenge that I could have met myself."

Nick spoke up. "Yet, it is also a challenge that, as your First, I could not let you accept personally. That's my job, or your Nightwolf guards job if I am not around. Considering that taking on Darr as we have, led us to those wolves that were working to twist Darr. Only, unknown to the lower ranked wolves of the group, the head wolf was actually drugging Darr. As such, his actions and susceptibility to their suggestions makes more sense.

Instead, he now has a better job, as does his mate, their pups are going to have great day-care after school, and they will be moving into an apartment that actually fits their family. All things they really needed because those that are moving against Mike and Lizz made sure that Darr lost his pup-care, and even warned off extended family that might have otherwise helped them.

This is also why Judy and I accepted being First for Lizz and Mike. If those that are going to work against him are going to be that underhanded. If they are going to resort to drugging a wolf who was otherwise unconnected and on the fringe of the pack. Then point him at Mike as some sort of test, or maybe a blunt weapon. Well, that cannot be stood for. It shows an astonishingly cold disregard for those mammals that they will seek to put in their way.

With all four of us being ZPD, Judy or I can act as champion in our capacity as First, and then Mike or Lizz can arrest them. That is what we did earlier today. All the wolves that were involved in drugging Darr into being their weapons have been arrested. I mean, that is simply beyond the pale. There are plenty of bigots out there, wolf or otherwise, like Relti, so there is no need to do what was done to Darr. Though in the long run, I think Darr might be thankful for what happened."

Darr spoke from the end of the table on Nick and Judy's side. "I wouldn't say thankful, sir. Yet at the same time, yes, because while it put me, my mate, and our pups at risk. We are in a far better place than we were, but only because of the foresight of yourself, First, and the compassion and wisdom of the Designate to listen to and heed your advice."

Greev nodded with a smile, acknowledging Darr, which caused his ears to flush and fold back. "You see. This is the very reason why I am also glad you stopped in here. I don't care if it was calculated, if anything, that improves my opinion of you, as it shows foresight and tactics. I know you, mister WildeHopps. I was a young and inexperienced businessman and met an equally young, suave, and smooth talking fox who just seemed to know what to say. I'd say that you took me for a ride, and you did, and yet while I was poorer monetarily for the experience. I was also better off in other ways. I was even angry at you for many years, until I started to hear stories about what you did with that money you got from me.

When I started looking into those stories I found myself surprised. At least half of the fifty grand you conned me out of, went to charities that supported mammals down on their luck through no fault of their own. Even more to the point, many of those mammals were put in that position by actions taken by my fathers, and now my company. Under my leadership, thanks to you conning me, the company no longer takes the actions that you used that money to blunt the blow from."

Nick chuckled nervously. "I see. I thought you looked familiar. It's the amount that tells me who you were. I hope that I made all those donations in your name didn't cause you problems."

Greev laughed. "Oh, very much so. My father was so enraged he had a heart attack and had to step back from the business many years early. Which pushed me into the leadership position just as I was realizing what you had done with that money. In the end, it worked out for the best. So worry not. Though I have often wondered what you did with the other twenty five thousand."

With a bright smile, Nick laughed. "Another ten went to those charities under other names. Names that would never in a billion years make such donations, and always in amounts sufficient to get them loud recognition. It's always fun to watch some specist politician getting up at a podium to accept an award or thank you from a charity, without a clue what that charity is. Only to realize as they stand up there, the look of pure horror and terror that comes over them. Realizing that accepting the award is opposed to everything they stand for."

Greev and Hearth laughed, along with Joehan. Joehan speaking. "Oh, that is golden. One of those wouldn't happen to have been a particularly specist wolf by the name of Jassup Feltro?"

Nick nodded with a Grin. "Yep, and that ended his career in city politics I do believe. It was also a whopping five hundred Z donation. The charity just happened to recognize the letterhead on the letter that the donation came with. A very generic letter that his campaign sent with all donations to charities that they actually liked."

Joehan laughed even harder, as did Greev and Hearth. "Oh, by the gods. That is perfect. Five hundred, I assume because that was their standard donation and listed on the letter?" Seeing Nick's nod, he laughed harder, holding his sides. "That's brilliant. Greev, getting conned by this fox did so much more good than I think you realized. He has talked about getting conned for years and how it changed his perspective. If the kits are out of school, you should have the nanny bring them by."

Greev and Hearth looked at Joehan nervously, Hearth responding as both their laughter dried up. "Uhm… I don't know if that is such a great idea."

Mike shook his head. "No one at this table doesn't know, or at least suspects." Leaning back and looking behind them. "Tails, gents." They both looked behind them to find their tails intertwined. "Yeah… You two have been about as good about keeping it a secret as Lizz and I apparently were. With the exception of those like Relti, the majority of the council couldn't care less."

Victoria nodded with a warm smile. "Same goes for the Alphas. We have three sons in interspecies relationships, two now open about it, and another we are waiting to come out of the closet. Far be it for us to judge. You should feel empowered to be open. This is not the world of even ten years ago, and if Arron and I have anything to say about it, we will fight off those like Relti that would seek to turn the pack, and the city as a whole, back to less enlightened times."

Mike laughed. "Frank is still in the closet about him and Henry?"

Arron nodded. "So very much so. We are kinda hoping that you two being open will give them the courage."

Mike looked to Nick and Judy. "We'll give them a few days, but you two don't suppose you could arrange another intervention?"

Judy shook her head. "We don't know Frank and Henry. That was the Maned Wolf we met at the wedding, right? Yeah, those two only had eyes for each other, and did all they could to not get too close. It was painful."

Victoria smiled. "All that is left is Barry."

Mike laughed harder. "Oh, no. Barry? He has it so bad for that Nightwolf in his History class. What's her name? Starts with an N."

Victoria nodded with a chuckle. "Nancy. I think she is Jason's baby sister."

Jason leaned into the table to look down it's length. "Hold up. Alpha, are you saying your youngest has a crush on my sister?" His grin grew wider and wider as Victoria nodded until he couldn't contain a great belly laugh. Everyone watched him for a few moments while he got control. "She is pining after Barry in the worst way. Constantly talking about how cute he is, how luxurious his tail looks and how soft his ears must be. She has it bad."

Judy grinned wickedly. "Oh, that is too perfect. They're seniors, right? Please tell me they are both going to be attending the same university."

Jason nodded. "She has a white patch on her throat, it's really more silver, and unless she wants to keep it constantly dyed, she is relegated to support roles. It's like Levi. His left ear is grey, but he keeps it dyed."

Levi grumbling from the side. "Don't remind me. Such a pain in the tail."

Jason laughed again at that and turned to Judy. "Why do you ask?"

Judy's grin only got more devious. "Well. I can see some background machinations to get those two together. We don't want to force anything, but there is nothing that says we cannot make sure that they have the opportunity to be in each other's presence."

Victoria gave Judy a pensive look, ears canted back slightly. "Is that wise? Playing matchmaker like that?"

Judy smiled warmly at Victoria. "That's just it. We're not playing matchmaker, a lesson my family could have learned. We're simply putting them in proximity to each other. You know." Turning to Jason. "She wouldn't happen to be a Gazelle fan, or a fan of me, would she? Have a bring your sibling to work day, sort of thing. On the same day." turning back to Victoria. "That Barry happens to be at the apartment to deliver a message or do something for Mike when Nancy is there. We might need someone to make a food run, and two young wolves happen to be there with nothing else to do."

Victoria's ears righted as her smile returned. "Well. That's the kind of match making that might actually work."

"Because it isn't matchmaking. In my extensive experience, matchmaking is setting up one or the other on dates they didn't ask for in hopes that some male or other will stick. And if you don't succeed, just keep throwing males, of lesser and lesser quality at the wall in hopes that by pure volume and bloody mindedness, you might get lucky."

Nick reached over and massaged Judy's shoulder and stroked her ears for a second. "It's okay Fluff. You have me now, and even though some of your more specist sisters haven't gotten the message, you don't have to worry any more."

Taking a deep breath and letting it out, Judy smiled up at Nick. "I know. Thank you for that, and everything else you do. I don't even know where they found the last few that showed up." Looking down to Victoria. "Yes, some of my family refuse to acknowledge my marriage to Nick, or that we are even together. Some are convinced that he has some hold over me, up to and including claims that he's hypnotized me, drugged me, or even has mind control powers."

Nick chuckled. "I wish. If anyone has a siren hold over anyone, that is you over me." Nick let out an oof as Judy elbowed him in the side.

"As I was saying. The last few are signs of true desperation. One was even older than my father, and not even rich, just some old buck they found on some dating app. Gods, the poor mammal was so embarrassed. The other two included a borderline criminal that knew Nick and Nick knew him. Realizing what was happening, he ran, and fast enough I might not have been able to catch him if I were trying. The other, well, he'll be doing five to ten for assault on an officer, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and a few other charges. All that only because we spoke on his behalf after the fact and getting the rest of the story. He'd been sold a bill of goods by one of my sisters, who is going up for her own trial for conspiracy for all that, with him testifying."

Victoria laughed darkly. "If your family knew anything about you, they wouldn't do that.'

"Yeah, but sadly most of them have never been interested in learning who I am, what I wanted, or what might actually be of interest to me in a buck. Then again, I found myself a fox, so no buck would ever do."

Mike turned to Nick suddenly. "Nick! Would you be able to identify some of Relti's illegitimate pups?"

Nick clearly considered it, his ears canting, one up the other to the side before righting themselves. "I don't see why not, but to what end? He is clearly shameless."

"I'm thinking more along the lines of blackmail. While in normal circumstances it would be illegal, as far as council matters are concerned, it's par for the course."

With a nod, Nick shrugged. "Okay. But blackmail him into what?"

Mike grinned wickedly. "Not so much into what, but for what. Information. He could be a massive source of data. While he is shameless, he has also worked very hard to keep all his indiscretions hidden. We do it right and we have enough, and we can drain him of information and then ruin him, because we'll promise to keep them from coming forward, but be specific about which ones and never let on how many we actually know of and are in contact with."

Nick grinned. "That's devious." Pulling out his phone and starting a text.

Joehan nodded with a dark chuckle. "I've been trying to do that for more than thirty years. Though diabolical, it won't work. Not unless you can prove it. Most of their mothers will be threatened into silence."

Judy giggled. "Maybe, but that was before we came into the equation. When it comes to scum like him, it would surprise me if he has not raped his way to many of those pups."

Joehan frowned with a growl. "I know for a fact that he has, but have never been able to prove it."

A deep growl came from Lizz. "Well, it would seem we have a way to deal with Relti, get all the information we need, and then have him permanently out of the way. Even if we cannot find one within the statute of limitations, I'm certain we can find enough to hold over him to get all the information we want, and then destroy him." Turning to look to the head of the table. "Mom. I see a few of them, especially if they are young enough, to stand at council and demand recognition. Something he will deny, at which point they will produce genetic tests to prove their parentage. His denial, forced under his oath while in active council will force a vote against him. We will then demand his assets be seized for distribution to all of his pups and their mothers as compensation."

Arron nudged Victoria as she laughed. "Oh, I like this so much. If you can pull it off."

Nick grinned with a chuckle. "We have our first already." Turning towards the Maitre'D. "Hey, Jason Ferris, why don't you come here for a second."

The Maitre'D walked up, ears back and tail down, clearly nervous. "How can I assist you, First?"

Smiling warmly. "Well, I know you have this position as a favor to Council member Relti. I assume he did this to shut you and your mother up."

The Maitre' Ds face darkened with a slight growl. "My mother died cursing that piece of manure. Yes, he is the reason I got the position, but not why I kept it. He also refused to help when my mother got sick. I hate him, but there is nothing I can do. I do not have the standing to get anywhere near the council chamber."

Mike smiled. "I assume you have proof that he is your father?"

Nodding, his ears still back and a growl in his voice. "I absolutely do. It was the only thing my mother was able to leave me."

"Please tell me it includes a sample of his DNA."

The Maitre'D smiled evilly. "That, and video of him providing it and confirming the results. My mom tricked him into thinking she would agree to be his mate in order to get it. This was when I was just a few months old. She then got support and a support order out of him, sealed of course. However, I'm well beyond legal age, so that seal no longer applies. I've considered going after him, but I can't. Not and not put my mate and pups at risk. I'd love to help take him down if that is what you are asking, but it would have to be certain. Just one of me isn't going to be enough."

Nick grinned. "No. But if you were one of many, maybe five or six in the council chamber, with documentation of dozens more."

"That would ruin him, and give us the opportunity to challenge and demand restitution under wolf law."

Creev nodded. "Well. Tony and I know two others, one of which is one of the pups we adopted. Their mother is one of his victims and committed suicide. She was only seventeen and exiled from her family. That could be statutory rape, right? Since she was sixteen?"

Judy frowned. "No. For wolves, like with rabbits and a few other species. Fifteen is the age, and if they ejected her at sixteen, her family basically declared she was of age under wolf law. However, we could still potentially prove rape. It'll have to be looked into. Any information you have we will take to SVU." Turning to Nick. "Telka still owes us a favor, right?"

"He does. We'll review the information, but as long as it is strong enough, burning that favor will be well worth it."

Creev grinned. "No worries there. It is more than strong enough, there is even a police report, that Relti got suppressed using his connections. I do believe that the mammal in question is no longer in that position."

Judy frowned and growled. "With them no longer in the position, us bringing in the data will get immediate action. Second. Who was this mammal?"

Hearth frowned with a growl. "I'll never forget that piece of work. Some specist prick of a leopard named Root."

Nick laughed. "Oh, well, in that case, I look forward to adding more charges to that mammal. I got the pleasure of arresting him just the other day for his part in a conspiracy to frame interspecies couples for crimes."

Hearth nodded, his ears back. "I wish that surprised me, but that matches with my experience with him. If I wasn't already on the council at the time, I think he might have gone after me for reporting on Relti, though I don't know what Relti held over him."

Judy turned to Nick with a shocked look. "You don't think Relti is one of the backers that we haven't been able to ID yet?"

Looking thoughtful for a moment and stroking his chin, Nick shifted his head side to side. "Could be. If so, we have him by the scruff and there is nothing that can save him. We will milk him for information, his progeny will get a portion of whatever he's worth, as well as the victims of the conspiracy, and then he'll finish his life in jail. I like it."

Victoria grinned. "You're telling me that there is a chance to destroy him fully, and do it legally?"

Judy nodded. "A very strong chance."

The Maitre'D exchanged information with Nick in order to provide him copies of the information he had and so he could be called in when needed. Creev and Hearth did the same, promising to have the documentation delivered by the next morning. They apparently kept several copies, as on more than one occasion they had break-ins that appeared to be looking for the documents.

After the meal was finished, they said their goodbyes and headed back out. Pulling into the complex, Darr parked and got out. Mike looking to Nick who nodded his agreement to Mike's silent question. Mike then turned to Darr. "Darr. Why don't you head home. Take the car as we discussed. You have more than earned the privilege. I suggest taking your mate and pups out for a nice meal."

Darr dipped his head, ears back and tail curled up between his legs. "I would do that, but I cannot. We are essentially broke until my first payday at the new position you have obtained for me."

Mike frowned and looked to Nick. "Surely have have enough to make it to that payday?"

Darr shook his head. "I'm sorry sir, I do not. While I did get a last paycheck, my account has been hit with some fees and penalties."

Nick frowned. "One second." Taking out his phone he dialed a number. "Nine, buddy. Did you get that? … … … Okay, text me." Looking up at Mike and Darr. "Nine is going to have a look. The appearance of sudden fees in your account Darr is a bit too convenient, given everything else going on. I'm betting you use Pack Savings Bank."

"Of course. I know we don't have to, but they gave better terms than other banks because we are pack members."

Nick's phone buzzes and he frowns, tapping a message back. "Okay. Yeah, those fees and charges are 100 percent suspect. Nine will take care of your account, but it might take a few hours to track it back to the person that entered things and get it reversed." Pulling out his wallet. "In the mean time, here's five hundred Z's. Until I tell you otherwise, use cash. We'll go over some other steps you will need to take to better protect yourself when you are next with us. You have a lot to learn. If things are not straight with your existing account by the time you get your first check, we'll get you set up at a new bank that doesn't have mammals who are going to do this to you over political maneuvering. You can also expect to be contacted by whomever did this with offers to make it all better, double your money, etc…"

Darr nodded. "Got it. I'll note or record everything I can and get it to you."

"You do that, but you can be assured that both you and your mates' communications are now on Nine's radar. If you don't know who that is, don't ask, you're better off not knowing. Save your receipts. I'll need them to get my money back, but don't worry, it won't be you paying me. Use that five hundred to take the family out, put fuel in the car and buy groceries, lunch for you, the pups, and the mate, etc… When you're down to a hundred, let me know and I'll get you more until things are all straight."

Mike grinned. "Considering this his first pay for today's work?"

Nick nodded. "Yep. Actually owe him another two, but I don't have it on me. Unless you do and I can give it to you when we get up to the apartment?"

Mike nodded with a grin, pulled his own wallet out and handed the cash to Darr. "Here you go. You did real good today. Make sure you talk to your wife so she understands what has happened and how to handle any contacts you get."

Darr nodded. "I will. Thank you all."

Darr gave a deep bow to both Nick and Mike, before quickly retreating into the car and pulling away. Once back in their apartments, Nick refreshes his wallet and gives Mike the two hundred. They then retire for the night, Nick and Mike having early wake ups in order to make it to the alpha estate and be prepared for the council meeting that afternoon.
