Adam awoke feeling something heavy on his chest. Opening his eyes he smiled seeing Kim asleep on his chest. He couldn't believe she was still here. His side was aching from the surgery but he barely noticed it since she was in his arms. He was determined not to wake her. It had been a horrible night and very scary for her. He would do it all over again since she was safe but he was sad that it had come to this. He knew that was a risk he was taking but he was happy that he saved her. He also smiled thinking back to the kiss they shared. It had been unexpected but amazing. He couldn't wait to do it again and he hoped this meant that they could actually be a couple now that her stalker was caught.
He felt her stirring in his arms. He looked down to see her opening her eyes. She sighed contently as she woke more. "Good morning beautiful." Adam kissed her forehead watching her smile. "Good morning! How are you feeling?" Kim asked as she leaned up to kiss him. "A little sore but I wouldn't change it. I got you and you are safe." Adam smiled wide as she blushed. "I'm happy you are okay. I feel so guilty about what happened to you." Kim admitted as she shifted. "Kim look at me. I'm fine. I knew the risk, I didn't care about the risk. I care about you. And this feels amazing. I don't want to give this up." Adam leaned down to kiss her properly. It was soft, sweet and slow. He felt Kim moving her hand to his chest as they continued to get lost in their kiss. He moaned as Kim slid her tongue into his mouth. The kissed turned more heated as their tongues fought for dominance.
Neither heard the machines going crazy as the nurses ran in with a doctor in tow. They stopped in their tracks as they saw why Adams heart rate was so high. "We may want to end this make out session. It's setting your monitor off." The doctor calls out as the couple pull apart. Kim buries her face into Adams chest and Adam just laughed noticing the doctor was a friend. "Sorry we got a little carried away. So when can I get out of here?" Adam asked. "Well I would like to keep you here for another day before we release you. Also you need someone to stay with you for a week to help clean and change your dressings. And you can't work that week either. Once you return to work you will be on desk duty for a few weeks till you are fully healed. I know it sucks but you had a stab wound and surgery to repair the muscles. Also no sexual activity for 6 weeks. Now can I meet your friend here?" Will asked as he finished speaking.
"First off all this time off from work sucks. But I will suffer through. As for my friend this is Kim Burgess. I think we are seeing each other?" Adam asked as he looked at her. "Yup I think so too." Kim waved to Will. "Sorry he didn't introduce me. I'm doctor Will Halstead. My brother Jay works with this guy. But it's lovely to meet you. I assume you are not a cop?" Will asked her. "Nope. I work for the Chicago Ballet." Kim replied watching Adam look at her with raised eye brows. He let it slide though knowing she had her reasons. "That's cool. Not a huge fan of ballet myself." Will admitted openly. "Me either till I saw a recent performance and it changed my opinion for sure." Adam kept looking into Kim's eyes as he spoke. "Well I think I'm going to leave. You two seem like you are set for now. I will check on you later." Will left after that.
"So how do you feel about spending a week hanging out with me? You could be my nurse?" Adam winked at Kim while laughing as she looked shocked. "Well a week with you doesn't sound too bad but I don't know about the nurse thing. Maybe a helper. But could that be at my place? I have to be able to keep up with my workouts even if I'm taking care of you." Kim asked shyly. "Of course. I'm good with that. Just need to get stuff from my place. I can't wait to see how this goes." Adam says as he gives her a soft kiss. They settle into each other as they enjoy the silence. They both fell back to sleep over time since the night had been so exhausting.
The time they woke up the noticed they weren't alone. Adams partner and friend Kevin was in the room. "Hey Kev! How's it going?" Adam asked. "It's going. Dude confessed, we have your personal items back but they are evidence for now. So how's it going in here?" Kevin asked wondering what was happening between them. "Probably get out tomorrow. Off work for a week then desk duty for a few weeks. Can't stay by myself for the first week so I'm gonna stay with Kim." Adam stated as if it was nothing. Kevin tried to keep a straight face but he was shocked. "Okay so you need stuff from your Place? Send me a list and I will grab it for you. That way you can just head to her place after you leave and rest. It will be better for you to rest up." Kevin was trying not to ask about Kim to much. Especially since she's in the room.
"Kev just ask the questions on your mind. I can see you stewing from here." Adam called out hoping he would just ask. He knew it was about Kim. "I'm just curious what's going on here. Between you two?" Kevin asked as he looked at them both. "We are together. Figuring it out. Obviously it's only been a few hours but we want to try this. We definitely like each other that's for sure." Adam explained as he held onto Kim's hand. "Yeah we want to try this. I felt something the moment I saw him outside the Opera House. I just knew he was different. I knew he felt it too. I'm not gonna lie, I was happy to hear they broke up. She was acting like a child and no one needs to be around that." Kim squeezed his hand as she defending them.
"Well we all just want you to be happy. You weren't when you were with Wendy. After the breakup you seemed lighter, happy. The smile on your face I've not seen before. As long as you two are happy we are happy for you." Kevin stated as he got up to leave. "I will come back tomorrow with your stuff. Text me that list." Kevin and Adam did their secret handshake and then he left. "Well that was fun. Hope it's not always like that." Kim got up from the bed. "Where are you going?" Adam asked as he whined at the loss of contact. "I need to use the bathroom and we need some food. And I know you won't want this food. It's terrible." Kim headed to the bathroom leaving Adam confused.
When she returned he was still left confused. "What's up?" Kim asked. "How do you know about the food here?" Adam asked her. "Well I have been here multiple times for different injuries. Sprains, breaks, concussion. So I have suffered with it and you shouldn't have too. So let me order us something and have it delivered. But also let's get someone in here to help you into the bathroom." Kim pressed the nurse button. She helped him to sit up some to help him get ready to head towards the bathroom. He needed the machine disconnected first. Kim was trying to help as much as possible as she really cared about him. And she was grateful for him and the safety he provided. "You know if you need to head home for a bit it's okay right?" Adam asked as he moved his legs to stand. "I know but I'm not leaving you alone. And I took the day off to be with you." Kim kissed him before he could object.
They spent the day watching movies in between napping and having vital checks. Later in the night Adam woke to a knock on the door, he looked and saw it was his father. "Dad? Hey what are you doing here?" Adam whispered as Kim slept in his arms. "Me? You had surgery and didn't tell me!" Bob yelled at Adam causing Kim to jump. "Hey sorry about that. Just my dad pissed at me. Go back to sleep." Adam kissed her head as she snuggled back into his chest. "Dad! First don't yell. We are in a hospital. Second it wasn't a big deal. I'm fine. I don't need the anti intelligence rant. I just want to live in my life right now. I'm happy, I'm okay and I will be out tomorrow." Adam whispered trying to Kim asleep. "Happy? What happened to Wendy? Who's this chick? Where did you find her?" Bob whispered back in a very harsh tone. "Wendy was cheating on me. I dumped her. Kim here is a dancer with the Chicago Ballet. I saw her dance, it was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. Now please she is sleeping and I want to sleep as well so please leave. We can talk again when I'm out of here." Adam dismissed his father quickly after that.
He snuggled into Kim and was out cold again. The next time he woke he saw Kim was checking her phone. "Hey. Everything okay?" Adam noticed she looked upset. "Hey. Um yeah a friend her cat died over night. She was only 6 years old so it's kind of shocking. She reached out since I've been through it recently as well so it's just a sad reminder." Kim shrugged. "Kim come here please." Adam asked her to come sit with him. "What do you mean you have been through it recently?" Adam wanted to know everything about her. "Well days after thanksgiving my all black cat Mickey was put down, he was in heart failure. And then my other cat Frank, my tuxedo, had to be put down after he stopped eating and they found a mass on his stomach. They were both 15 maybe 16 so I knew time was limited but to lose both with in a short period of time has been hard. I actually need to go pick up his ashes." Kim had tears in her eyes so Adam hugged her and helped wipe her tears away.
"Kim I'm sorry! That's horrible. I'm here for you. I can't even imagine how hard that must have been for you." Adam kissed her temple as they snuggled together. "Just know I will go with you when you pick up the ashes. You are no longer alone." Adam whispered as she cried for her loss. When she settled he laid them back down where they were both comfortable. "When you feel better how about we get some shelves to put their ashes on? Make a memorial for them both." Adam offered hoping to make her happy again. "I think that would be nice. Thank you for the suggestion.its lovely." Adam pulled out his phone to start looking for shelves. He found several that would work but he just put them in the cart to look at later.
As the night came to an end they were both still snuggled together. Neither was looking forward to being apart anytime soon. It seemed strange how quickly they bonded but they actually liked it. They both fell asleep wrapped up in each other. Kim almost on top of him but careful not to touch his incision. The bed was small and they wanted to be comfortable so they needed to figure it out. Will walked by at one point and noticed what was going on so he snapped a few photos and send them to his brother. He laughed and covered them with a thicker blanket before turning off the lights and leaving them to sleep.
The next morning Kim left while Adam was getting tests done. She needed to shower and freshen up her home before Adam arrived home with her. She first showered and then cleaned up the mess from the knife fight. Then hit the grocery store to fill up her fridge. She was hardly home but Adam would need to eat to keep his strength up. After filling the fridge she took out the trash and headed back to the hospital. The testing should be done by now and hopefully he would be able to leave soon.
As she arrived in the room she saw him laughing at a phone and then saw several people in the room. They were people he worked with. "Hello! How are you guys today?" Kim offered a hand shake to each of them before taking a seat next to Adam. "We are great. Just laughing at a photo my brother sent last night of you two." Jay laughed as Kim was handed the phone. "Oh my! That's embarrassing!" Kim turned bright red. "Oh it's cute! Don't get crazy." Adam laughed at her reaction. "No that's embarrassing! But it's fine. What did the tests say?" Kim wanted to change the topic. "Oh yeah I can leave today. They are working on my discharge paperwork now." Adam squeezed her hand. He noticed she wasn't as comfortable with more people in the room.
"That's great! I stocked the fridge for you. And cleaned up the mess from last night. So my place is ready for you to stay with me." Kim was excited for him to leave the hospital. It was depressing here. "Awesome! I just need to get some medical stuff to change the dressing." Adam said not really looking at the team. "Oh honey I'm a dancer I have tons of medical supplies at home already. If you need something that's not there I will be shocked." Kim laughed as she looked at his face. He then remembered she had tons of injuries which would be the reason for the large amount of supplies.
"Well we should head out and leave you two lovebirds alone. Call if you need anything." Erin laughed as they started to leave. "Um guys if you want later in the week you guys can come over and we can all hang out some." Kim offered trying to get to know them better. And trying to make herself more comfortable with them. "That would be great! Thank you for offering that. Just let us know when." Kevin waved as they left the room. "Sorry I didn't mean to be awkward. Just not sure how people will take us getting together after the Wendy thing. I dint want to be judged for jumping into bed with you." Kim explained as she stressed over it all. "Hey they get it. And it will get more comfortable with time. Also we haven't slept together yet, just slept in the same bed. And no one will judge that. I should have broken up with Wendy months ago. And I didn't, I was chicken shit. That wink you sent my way gave me the courage I needed to dump her ass. So you and me are solid." Adam kissed her softly.
After Adam was discharged they headed to her place with the duffel bag full of stuff that Kevin got for him. When they arrived Kim helped Adam out of the car and into her building. He was walking pretty well just needed to make sure he didn't move the wrong way. Kim moved him straight to the couch to rest while she made some lunch. "Kim please come sit with me." Adam called for her. "Give me a minute. I'm making you some lunch." Kim came back into the room with lunch for him. "Thank you for this but where is your lunch?" Adam questioned. "Oh um I'm not really hungry. So I will eat later." Kim shrugged it off but Adam wasn't having it. "Kim that's bullshit. Please eat something. I understand you need to watch your figure for your job but you have to eat something. Please?" Adam was concerned about the lack of food she ate. He knew she had to be strict but this was insane. He hadn't seen her eat at all. "Okay but I have to stay with in the special diet." Kim headed to the kitchen and came back with a lettuce wrap with some meat and veggies. It was sad looking.
"Thank you for eating something. Do you have written rules or a meal plan you have to follow?" Adam asked as he watched her eat her sad lunch. "Yeah I will show you." After she ate Kim went to get the papers. Adam read the papers She handed and he looked horrified. "Kim this is crazy. No one can live on this. It's not healthy. You need more protein to help with muscle strength, you need more calories. Your body naturally burns 1000 calories a day just to function. And you are only eating that. But you work our everyday and dance everyday. Your body needs more. I'm really worried about you." Adam held her close as he whispered the next part. "I want a life with you but I'm scared for you. Please let me help you."
Kim normally would have told off anyone who judged her but his words sunk in some. She nodded against him. He pulled away slightly to look into her eyes. "I have a friend who does training, meals plans and does nutritional counseling. He could work up a plan for you based on your fitness level and level of activity to come up with the best plan to help you get stronger without adding tons of weight or muscle mass. I will even go with if you are not comfortable going." Adam was so concerned about her health. It seemed weird that she could only eat so little. Was this normal he wondered? He wasn't sure. But thought it might be based on his thin they all were. "I can go alone. You know you are the first person I didn't tell off for being worried about my weight. I normally tell people to mind their own business. But I think because you said you are scared for me that hit home. I want to build a life with you too." Kim was confident about her decision to seek help with her diet. Maybe there was a better way. Hell this was probably a 10 year old plan too. But she was hungry often and strength wasn't a bad thing.
They settled into a nice silence on the couch. Adam was still pretty tired so Kim helped into bed so he could take a nap. While he napped she did research about her eating habits trying to figure out if she really needed help or could do it on her own. After an hour she decided to seek help. Everything she read was confusing and made her feel dumb so she decided to just trust Adam and his friend. As Kim did some laundry she heard Adam moaning in pain so she ran to see he had rolled onto his side. She helped roll him into his back before pulling his shirt up to see if he tore his stitches. When she was sure he was okay again she placed pillows on his side to help stop him from rolling over and returned to the wash.
It was around an hour later when she saw he had gotten up to use the bathroom. She waited for him to come back to see if he needed anything. He looked slightly more refreshed when he returned. "How was your nap?" Kim asked as he sat next to her. "Good I missed you though. Wish you would have been there." Adam settled closer to her nuzzling her neck. "Stop! You can't! 6 weeks doctors orders!" Kim laughed as Adam pouted like a child. "It's a great idea and I want it too but your stitches are way to fresh. I'm not taking you back because we couldn't follow the rules or resist urges." Kim wasn't having it. He was not getting injured on her watch. "Fine! At least cuddle with me." Adam knew that would work. She smiled and moved so they were laying together, Kim curled into his side. "See now this works." Kim laughed knowing he was rolling his eyes.
As he fell back to sleep Kim tried to get up but he wouldn't loosen his grip on her so she napped with him. There were worse ways to spend a day off that was for sure. They both woke an hour later to the sound of Adams phone ringing. Kim retrieved it for him so he didn't have to move. "Sorry I didn't get it on time." Kim said as she handed him the phone. "Oh it's fine. It's just Kev checking in to see if we need anything. Let me text him back." Kim watched as he traded texts with his friend for a good while before he placed his phone down again. "All good?" Kim asked as he settled back in next to her. "Yup. I told him you are all I need." Adam replied with a very serious face. "Okay that's super sweet but also super corny!" Kim laughed as she went in to kiss him. "All I need is you too baby!" Kim whispered as she laid her head next to his. "Only you."
