Luna- 10
Will couldn't believe his daughter was now 10, ten long years had passed since he became a single father. He loved and cherished every moment of it. Luna was his everything, the smile on his face, the air in his lungs, his heartbeat, more importantly, his soul. Things were perfect for the older Halstead.
He had a great job and career, he was getting closer to Natalie, he had his little girl and brother. Life was perfect for Will. Until someone from his past returns.
One morning Jay had taken his niece to school, Will came home after a long exhausting shift and went straight to bed. Whenever Jay was with his niece he had always kept his guard up. Nobody was gonna hurt his niece to get to him or his brother. Not a chance in hell.
A woman in a car had kept her distance from the young detective's car, she had been talking to the youngest Halstead. Today was gonna be the chance she would see her. Or so she hoped so. It was Luna's mother, Gia. She had finally returned for her daughter. She had just followed Jay's car.
Jay caught the car in his rear view mirror, he didn't say anything around Luna he didn't wanna upset or possibly scare her. That and Will would most likely kill him. He played it cool and dropped his niece off as usual. Gia had parked her car but didn't see Jay's. She lost him.
A loud knock broke her from her thoughts, playing it cool she rolled the window down.
"Yes?" Gia spoke smoothly.
"Any reason you following me?" Jay asked.
"I don't know what you mean"
"You can answer my questions here or I haul you down to my district. Take your pick"
She sighed. "My name is Gia Kyle. I'm Luna's mother"
The young detective had stopped entirely, had he just heard that correctly? His niece's mother? Will had only ever mentioned Gia maybe once and that was when he moved back to Chicago and showed up at his brother's door. He already knew once he was in his car he had no choice but to call Will.
"Look, I don't know about you but I do know enough that you abandoned my niece when she was a baby and left her on my brother's doorstep. Do yourself and all of us a huge favor. Leave Chicago and never come back. Leave Luna alone. Leave my brother alone. They're doing perfectly fine without you"
"You don't understand"
"I understand enough"
"You'll regret doing this"
Jay had cocked an eye at that. "Are you threatening me?"
"I don't make threats. I make promises"
"Step out of the car"
"Why?"
"Step out of the car"
She rolled her eyes, just as she was out he cuffed her. "What the hell are you doing?"
"You threatened a Chicago Police officer"
"You… You're a cop?"
"Detective"
"If you let me go, I'll leave Chicago and never come back"
"How can I be so sure you'll actually do it?"
"You gotta trust me"
"Yeah, not happening"
"I guess we'll see each other around Detective"
"Keep away from my brother and niece. I'm not playing around"
Once she was out of the cuffs she had taken off, Jay hopped in his car and went to the district. He practically ran inside and up to the squad he headed straight for Hank's office closing the door. The older Sergeant looked from his files to his detective.
"Something I can help you with Halstead?" Hank asked.
"I need a detail on my niece, Luna" Jay answered without hesitation.
Leaning back in the chair Hank waited for Jay to continue before he said anything. Jay sat in the chair across from him.
"I brought Luna to school like I usually do. A woman was following us, her name is Gia Kyle. She claims to be Luna's mother. I'm getting a very bad feeling about this Sarge"
"Have you called Will and told him?"
"Not yet"
"Do that and I'll get Ruzek and Atwater to sit at Luna's school"
"Thank you Hank"
"You're welcome"
Jay left and went to the lounge and began blowing up Will's phone, after a half hour Will arrived at the district and went up tired and ran a hand through his messy red curls. He walked to his brother's desk.
"Someone better be dying for you to wake me up from my sleep" Will told his brother.
The young detective dragged his brother to the lounge, closing the door. He faced his brother. "When was the last time you saw Gia?"
"What?"
"When was the last time you saw Gia Kyle?" Jay was a tad impatient.
"Almost 10 years ago, we were wasted at a party. I woke up and she was gone. Why you asking about her?"
"She followed me taking Luna to school this morning"
The older Halstead felt his heart sink. No. It couldn't be. Could it? Gia was back. Could she want Luna back? Was he gonna lose his little girl?
"No. No. No. Jay no. I can't lose Luna"
"Hey you're not losing her I swear you're not"
"Does she know where Luna goes to school?"
"Most likely"
"I..I gotta go get her. She's not leaving my sight.."
"Will, Will, hey I need you to relax. Adam and Kevin are already at her school. They're her detail until we take care of Gia. Is there anything I should know about her?"
"I-I don't really know we were both really drunk when we slept together"
"You didn't go to school with her?"
"No she just showed up at a party. I barely remember that night. I woke up in my bed alone"
"I'll get the others to dig into her"
"Jay please, I don't care whatever you have to do. Keep Luna safe"
"You have my word"
Will had left the district he had to head home, he had to clean up for work and he was gonna spend as much time as he could with his little girl before going in. He had to make sure Luna doesn't find out that her mother is back. He didn't wanna give his little girl any false hope of having a mother like Gia. What he didn't tell Jay was that he lied. He did know, Will and Gia dated for a while when he was in New York. She was more of the party type, she wasn't ready to settle with a kid.
That had all changed when she got pregnant with Luna, for the whole pregnancy she hadn't smoked or drank. The baby girl was born healthy. Right after Gia gave birth and she was cleared to leave the hospital she left with her daughter, the young woman left the small baby girl in the car carrier in front of Will's apartment door and that was when she disappeared for 10 years. Until today.
Will arrived home as he pulled up he saw another car there, he frowned. Gia had stepped out. She wore a simple loose green shirt with blue jeans and heels. Her long brunette hair was down in loose curls. Will froze seeing her.
"Hi Will," Gia said with a smile.
"What are you doing here?" Will asked bluntly.
"I wanna see you"
The older Halstead raised his eye. "You wanna see me or Luna? The daughter you abandoned"
"I didn't abandon her"
"So what is it you leaving a baby on my doorstep? What do you call that?"
"Alright I did abandon her. I wasn't ready to have a kid"
"And I was?!"
"I'm sorry"
"No you're not and you're not seeing Luna. I forbid it. You gave up that chance and your rights when you left her on my doorstep"
"She's my daughter too Will"
"She was your daughter. Not anymore. When she was seven, seven years old she asked me if it was her fault you left her. For damn near a month I told her it wasn't her fault and I had to prove to her I wouldn't leave her either. You don't get to skip out on ten years of her life and come back acting like mother of the year. So not happening. I'm not getting her hopes up for you to wreck them so you can go back to New York or wherever the hell you came from and leave me and Luna alone"
Gia stalked over with a glare in her eyes. "You don't wanna make a mistake like this Will"
"I'm not the one making a mistake. Just leave Gia. After all it was your speciality"
She smacked him across the face, Will breathed heavily. No matter how pissed he'd get at Gia he'd never ever raise a hand to a woman. Gia left without another word. He just went into his house.
He cleaned up the house, made his little girl a snack, once that was done he had a quick shower and got his scrubs and other stuff for work out. He couldn't stop thinking about Gia showing up. Would she take his little girl? Would she try and force herself in Luna's life? More importantly why show up after all these years? What was her play? All he knew was he had to be on his game and be on the lookout for anything and everything.
A few days had passed Gia was getting very annoyed, Will and Jay were almost always with Luna, when the youngest Halstead was at school she had a detail on her. She couldn't get close to her daughter not without seeing or dealing with Will, Jay or Luna's detail. There had to be some way to get to her daughter. A thought had come to her head.
Little Luna Halstead was walking to her next class after the last bell, Gia was disguised as a janitor. She went over to Luna and grabbed her hand and started walking. The halls were filled so nobody had noticed. The ten year old looked at the mystery woman.
"Who are you?" Luna spoke, half nervous, half scared.
Gia bent down smiling. "I'm your mom"
