*Picks up from previous chapter*
Luna- 10
Luna had been missing for almost 6 hours, Will was at the district with his brother still he hadn't left yet. He couldn't. He didn't wanna go home without his little girl. It wouldn't feel right. Jay had brought his brother some coffee and food, the young detective knew his brother wouldn't sleep. Not without knowing Luna is safe.
"Hey man, I brought you some coffee and some food" Jay said softly to his brother handing him the stuff.
"Thank but, I'm not hungry," Will replied.
"You need to eat, keep your strength up"
"It's getting dark out. Luna still gets scared every so often. When she was little she'd have me check under her bed for the scary monsters she said she always saw"
"You know I will get her back. We'll find Luna. I don't care if I have to tear this whole damn city apart. I will find Luna and bring her home"
The older Halstead felt his body trembling, he felt as if he wanted to cry again. "I..I feel so lost without her Jay"
Jay couldn't stand to see his brother in so much emotional pain, his brother was going through a parent's worst nightmare. Not knowing where Luna was crushed him. He wrapped his arms around his brother. Will very loosely held his brother as he started to cry again.
Gia had gone outside for a cigarette she still couldn't help but blame herself for this. Her daughter was taken because of her. Because of what she had done. She took a deep inhale of the cigarette and blew the smoke out. She let out a small sob as she looked at the now night sky.
"Please, I'll do anything. Anything you want just please. Don't take my little girl. If you wanna punish anyone, punish me. Not Luna she's a little girl. She's still just a baby. Whatever it is you want I'll give you. Just bring my little girl back" She cried as she stared at the bright twinkling stars and bright moon.
Erin had gone outside to check on her and overheard her talking. All of her anger had melted away. Gia had admitted what she's done and is now paying the price. The young distraught mother had looked to see Erin.
"I don't wanna say I abandoned Luna. I left her with Will because when I got pregnant I was trying to clean up and get my act together. I didn't smoke, do drugs, drink, I made sure Luna was born healthy and safe. I gave all that up for her. I wanted to turn my life around for her. After I left her with Will I managed to get into a treatment program. I hadn't used in 10 years. I was sober all these years. I ended up at the bar because I was angry. 10 years of sobriety down the drain. I wanted to prove to Luna I was ready to be her mother now that I got my addictions under control. When she shoved me and said I wasn't her mom" She choked up. "I wanted to crawl into a hole and die"
"Why didn't you go to Will for help at the time? He would have helped you and you could have still seen Luna" Erin says.
"I didn't want myself around a baby in the condition I was in. I did stupid stuff when I got high and drunk. I couldn't endanger my baby. I'd never forgive myself. I didn't wanna be around Luna until I was clean, sober and I could trust myself again"
"If you really wanna make a change I can help you but you've gotta want it for yourself. Not just for Luna. You've gotta want it"
"Why would you wanna help me? Earlier you were tearing my head off and now you wanna help me"
"Because I was like you at one point without the baby. My mom, she got me high and drunk all the time when I was a teenager. When I was 15 a cop and his wife had taken me in, treated me like their own. They got me clean, sober, in school. I was a new me. I did the same thing for a young girl" Erin choked up herself. "Nadia. When I saw her I saw me and I wanted to help Nadia the way Hank had helped me. I wanna help you so you can be the best mother to your daughter. And your Luna's mother, my niece's mother. Even though you and Will aren't married you are a Halstead. Your family"
"Thank you" She had put out her cigarette.
She had gone inside to see Will, she needed to talk to him.
Meanwhile
Terry had Luna stashed at a house, it was a run down old house on the south side. Luna was tied up in a room upstairs. They had locked the door from the outside so she couldn't escape.
The room was cold, the temperatures always dropped at night, Luna was freezing. All she had was a long sleeve shirt, jeans, and boots. She was on a worn out mattress thankfully they didn't tie her ankles. On the floor was an old knife blade. She went over to it and slipped it between her fingers.
Having an uncle who's a former Army ranger and now detective, he had taught her a lot. She started to move the blade up and down to cut the tape. She was careful to avoid cutting herself. She heard a small tear and her eyes went wide a bit. The tape was tearing. She had started moving a bit faster tearing the tape. Soon her wrists were free, a few red dark spots trickled on the floor. It was her blood, she had very slightly nicked her wrist.
She didn't care about that, her skin would heal. All she wanted was to go home to her father, when she heard her mother part of her wanted her mother. She wanted to go home. The ten-year-old had begun moving around the room looking out for a way out, the door was locked from the outside. The window was locked, she was thinking.
Right outside the window was a big oak tree, one of the branches was close. All she had to do was break the window and climb out then run. It would be risky. Very risky. Was it a risk she was willing to take?
One thing she saw her uncle do occasionally to break the glass in the window is to first cover her elbow and as hard and as fast as she could bring it back, shattering it. She wanted to do it but she wasn't sure.
All she could do was look outside to the starry night sky and let a few tears fall. "Please hurry daddy. Please hurry"
District 21
Will just sat on the steps of the district looking at the night sky, silent tears fell. Gia had gone around to find him on the steps.
"Can we talk?" Gia asked, her voice cracking.
"Yeah" Will says his voice cracked. "What's up"
"I wanna apologize I never told you the truth about why I left Luna with you"
"It doesn't matter"
"It does. When I was pregnant with her I got myself cleaned up and straightened up. I was clean and sober the whole pregnancy. After she was born I was still trying to get myself straightened out soI knew leaving her with you was the best option. She'd have at least one parent who could give her everything. I didn't trust myself to be around her while I was still cleaning up my messes. I was trying to settle everything before I came back to her. I was trying to settle all my old debts and I had them all settled, all but one. I'm so sorry for getting our little girl taken"
"I could have helped you if you needed it"
"Me being on my own for so long, I was never good at asking for help, I wanted to try and do it on my own. I've been clean 10 years, I was sober but I fell off the wagon. I don't know what I'd do if we lose her"
Will had gently grabbed her hands into his and pulled her close. "Jay's gonna find her, I know he will. And if you need any help, I'll help you"
"Y-you will?"
"Of course I will. We have a daughter, I never stopped caring for you or about you. Was I mad when you left? Yes but I got over it eventually I was strong enough to forgive you. Gia, you gave me the most precious gift of all and I couldn't be anymore happier or anymore grateful"
"I'm so sorry, I just wanted to be a good mother to her"
"I understand and she will too"
"I just want her back"
The devastated father just hugged his daughter's mother as she cried. Watching from afar was Natalie, she had heard what happened and wanted to check on Will. She stopped seeing him hugging another woman. That had gotten her curious Will never mentioned another woman. Except Luna's mother. She thought it was her but didn't know. She had just driven away.
By midnight Will and Gia were back inside the district, Will had told Gia to get some rest. She had laid on the couch in the lounge. The young father couldn't sleep, after years of being a father and a doctor he knew how to keep himself awake. He wouldn't do anything until his little girl was home.
Jay and the others were still tracking down leads on Terry, the young doctor had gone to his brother. "Can we talk?"
"Yeah"
Jay escorted his brother away from everyone, they had gone into the hallway towards the interrogation room.
"What's up?" Jay's voice lowered.
"What's the percentage of children coming back after being kidnapped?"
"Will, you can't think like that man, you can't. We will find Luna alive. I promise you"
"It's been almost 10 hours Jay, maybe longer. I need my little girl back"
"I promise you we will get her back. I'll tear this whole city upside down if I must, Luna's coming home"
"I..I miss her so much"
The young detective wrapped his brother in a hug and held him, Will just had cried into his brother's shoulder.
While Gia was asleep her phone started to ring, waking her, she quickly grabbed it and answered it.
-Hello?
-Hello Gia. Terry came on.
-Terry, where's my daughter?
-Where's my money?
-I'm working on it.
She had gone to find Will and ran to him putting the phone on speaker, Erin signed for Mouse to start a trace and he typed rapidly on the keyboard. After a few seconds he managed to get a trace. He held up his thumb.
-I'm giving you until noon tomorrow.
-I'll do my best to get it. Can I talk to Luna? Please.
Will moved closer hearing a shuffle. His heart raced rapidly in his chest.
-Mo-momma? Came Luna's scared voice.
-It's me baby. Are you ok?
-I'm scared. I wanna go home. I want daddy.
Will had felt his throat tighten when he heard his little girl begging for him, it took all his strength not to grab the phone and talk to her. He didn't wanna risk her life. It was tearing Gia up inside to hear her daughter like this.
-I know baby, it's gonna be ok. I'm coming I promise.
Before Luna could respond Terry had come back on. -Satisfied?
-Let's do a trade Terry. Me for my daughter. I'll do whatever it is you want.
-Get my money and she's yours.
-Alright, I'll get it just please don't hurt her.
-That's entirely up to you.
Before Gia could respond the phone went out, Gia would have fallen to her knees if Will hadn't caught her. Jay bent down to them.
"Mouse got a location, we're going to get her," Jay told the parents.
"I'm going with you" Will told his brother.
"I can't let you do that"
"Jay she's my daughter. I have to be there"
"It's too dangerous"
"For Luna, I'll face all the danger in the world"
"I'm going too" Gia spoke, getting her voice back.
"If I bring you both, you have to do what I say" Jay gave in.
The young parents nodded and agreed. They all had gone down to get prepared, Jay was strapping his vest on then began getting his weapons. Hank had gone over to him.
"You sure you can do this, if you wanna sit out I understand" Hank said.
"That's my niece Sarge, I can't sit by and do nothing. I just can't. It's bad enough that I have to have Will and Gia stand by and do nothing" Jay replied.
"Will and Gia have to stay put while we get Luna"
"I understand"
Everyone had loaded up in the cars, Will and Gia had rode with Jay. Their hearts raced in their chests. Their anxiety was skyrocketing. They hoped they would get their little girl back.
Once at the house, they all killed their lights to the cars they were gonna sneak to get in. Before Jay got out he looked back at the young parents.
"Both of you stay put, don't for any reason get out of the car" Jay told them firmly.
"Just bring us Luna back" Will just about pleaded with his brother.
"You have my word I will"
Jay had left them in his truck. The team had left their cars and went quietly to the door hoping they wouldn't be seen or noticed. Jay was in the front he was getting his niece come hell or high water he was going to do it.
At the front door Jay kicked the door in. "CHICAGO PD!"
The few people in the room scattered. Terry was upstairs when he heard the commotion he went and grabbed Luna making her shriek. He held the ten-year-old close with a gun by his side, there was another staircase he was gonna use to go down to the kitchen and get out the back way.
Luna was struggling to get free but his hold was tight and he held her rib area tight making it slightly difficult to breathe. When he got down to the kitchen area near the backdoor someone yelled.
"Chicago PD! Let the girl go!" It was Jay.
Terry slowly turned, showing a scared Luna, when Jay saw his niece's tear stained face his heart broke but he had to keep a straight face.
"Let the girl go"
"I don't think so. She's my ticket for getting out of here" Terry grinned evilly.
"Uncle Jay. I want my mom and dad" Luna whimpered, holding back a sob.
The young detective had to keep his niece calm. "Lu Lu, look at me honey. Keep your eyes on me"
"I'm scared"
"I know, I'm gonna bring you back to your mom and dad"
Terry had then pulled his gun and held it to Luna's head, when the ten-year-old felt the coolness of the metal press against her head she closed her eyes tightly as more tears fell. When Jay saw the gun go to his niece's head slowly he lowered his gun, there was no way in hell he was about to endanger his little niece further. He dropped his gun and held his hands up.
"You don't have to do this, just let her come to me" Jay looked at Terry, he glanced between Terry, the gun, and Luna.
"Not a chance, I'm walking out of here with her and if you try and stop me" He clocked the gun.
Luna whimpered, hearing it she kept her eyes closed tightly. Coming in the house was Gia, she was going to get her daughter back.
"Terry, let my daughter go now" Gia spoke sharply.
They all looked to see Gia coming in and holding her hands ups. Jay looked back at her.
"Gia, get out of here" Jay told her.
"Not without my daughter. Terry if you wanna hurt me go ahead, leave my daughter alone" Gia then looked to her former dealer. "What will it take for you to let her go"
"My money" He snarled.
"I'll get it just let my daughter go"
"How do I know you'll keep your word?"
"You have my daughter, I'll do whatever you want. Let her go to Jay and I'll take you to get your money. My word is my bond"
Terry had slowly lowered the youngest Halstead to the ground and she took off running to her uncle, Jay quickly swept her up and shielded her body with his and his vest. Just as Jay turned Terry raised his gun and as fast as lightning Gia jumped in front of Jay and pulled a gun firing it. She fired 3 rounds into Terry and he dropped dead to the ground.
Jay had held his crying and trembling niece close to him, everyone had ran into the kitchen to see Gia holding the gun and Terry dead on the floor.
"I guess I have more explaining to do," Gia spoke.
"I think you do too," Hank said.
"We'll worry about that later, I'm taking Luna out of here" Jay chimed in.
Gia ran to her daughter. "Luna, baby? Are you ok?"
The ten-year-old was shaking like a leaf from head to toe and crying, slowly she looked over and saw her mother. "Y-y-you saved me"
"Of course I did, I'm your mom. I'd do whatever it took to keep you safe. I know I have a lot to make up for and this is my way of showing it"
Luna had reached out for her mother Jay had followed his niece's lead and handed her to Gia. For the first time in 10 years Gia held her daughter and cried. She ran her finger through her daughter's red fiery curls. Looking over Gia saw Jay watching on with a small smile, along with the rest of intelligence.
"Thank you"
"She's family, we'd do anything for family" Adam said. "That includes you too"
"Welcome to the Halstead family Gia" Jay hugged her and Luna close.
She sniffed. Eventually they took Luna out shielding her from seeing Terry's dead body, Will was pacing anxiously out the car when he saw Gia and Jay with Luna he was finally able to breathe again. His baby girl was alright. More importantly she was alive.
"Luna! Luna!" Will called running.
The youngest Halstead ran to her father. "Daddy! Daddy"
When she was in arms reach Will had scooped her up and hugged her close, more tears fell from his eyes. This time they were tears of joy. He was so glad to have his baby back. The young father was restored.
"Oh my baby, it's alright. Daddy's here. I've got you. I'm here my baby girl" Will soothed her.
"I...I was...so scared" She cried, her fingers gripping his shirt.
"I know honey I know, you're alright now"
"I wanna go home"
"Were gonna go home, first we're gonna go get you checked out at Med. I bet Uncle Connor or Uncle Ethan can do it"
"Can Uncle Connor do it?"
"I'm sure he can if he's on shift"
She sniffed and nodded. Will, Jay and Gia, headed to Med with Luna. When they got there Luna was scared to leave her parents, eventually she had let Connor check her out. After the trauma surgeon had looked her over he left her to rest as she fell asleep. He had gone out to see the trio.
"How is she?" Will asked worried.
"She's just fine, she's a little dehydrated. I have her hooked up to an IV. She's asleep right now" Connor explained.
"Can we see her?" Gia asked.
"Of course"
Will and Gia had gone in to see their daughter, Jay stayed back with Connor. "Hey Connor, right quick"
"What's up man"
"There weren't any signs of.." Jay trailed off. He couldn't say it.
"No signs of sexual abuse. Couple small cuts but nothing more"
The young detective had let out a sigh of relief, his young niece was alive and safe. That's all he could ask for. He looked into Luna's room, the ten-year-old was fast asleep, Will was beside her stroking her hair back. Gia stayed on the other side watching her sleep.
She'd glance over at Will, she was keeping another secret from him but now wasn't the time to tell him. Right now they had to focus on their daughter. Gia had eventually fallen asleep, Will had covered her up and made sure Luna was alright. He had went out to his brother.
Jay got off the phone and looked to see his brother. "Hey, how is she?"
"She's good" Then Will hugged his brother tightly. "Thank you. Thank you for finding her"
"You're welcome. You should thank Gia, she saved her and me"
Will looked surprised. "She did?"
"If it wasn't for her Luna and I could be dead"
Just as Will turned to go back into the room Gia came out. "We should talk. There's a lot you don't know"
