Luna- 8
Summer was in full swing, the temperatures were high and brutal. School was also out. Kids played in the streets, played in the pool. But it brought a problem for Will. With school being out, he didn't know what to do with his daughter.
He considered bringing her to the hospital daycare but they were dealing with a lice outbreak and wasn't sure if it was safe to bring Luna in yet. Will didn't want to leave his daughter with just anyone, he was very cautious about who he let around his daughter.
One morning he got called in early and he had no one to watch Luna. He then had a thought. "Luna grab your stuff sweetheart! We gotta go"
The little eight-year-old came running out in a light green Disney princess tank top with blue jean shorts and her sneakers. Her fiery red hair pulled into two pigtails and braided. A small backpack hanging on her shoulders.
"Do I get to go to work with you?" Luna asked.
"Not today, the daycare is still closed" Will tells her, finishing her lunch bag.
"So where will I go?"
"Let's go and you'll find out"
The father and daughter had left, once making sure Luna was secure in the backseat. Will went and got in the driver seat and got himself buckled in and started to drive off.
The older Halstead had made the drive and went to his brother's job. It wasn't the ideal place for a little girl to be but she would be with Jay, surrounded by cops and detectives, and Hank. She would be safe. Nothing or no one would be stupid enough to hurt her.
Soon they arrived at the district, Will grabbed his daughter's stuff and collected his daughter and headed inside. They had to fight the small crowd of officers coming in. Shift changes were a bitch. Officers getting off, officers coming in for roll call. Once they got in they headed for Trudy's desk.
"Good morning Sergeant, is it possible I can see my brother for a moment?" Will asked Trudy.
Trudy looked between the father and daughter, she figured why Will wanted to see his brother. "Go on, I'll buzz you up"
"Thank you"
They headed for the stairs and Trudy hit the buzzer letting them up, Will felt his phone going off knowing it was the hospital calling him. He had to make this as quickly as he could and go.
Jay was at his desk going over last minute paperwork they had to get finished. Hearing footsteps he looked over to see his brother and niece, feeling a bit anxious he got up from his chair and went to his brother.
"Hey, hey LuLu. Is everything alright? You guys ok?" Jay asked his small family.
"Everything is fine, Luna, can you go sit at your uncle's desk while we talk?" Will glanced at his daughter.
The youngest Halstead nodded and went to Jay's desk and sat down putting her bag on the table. Will looked at his brother with a hopeful look.
"Have I ever told you how much of a great brother you are and how much I love and appreciate you" Will tells his brother.
"You want me to babysit don't you?" Jay replied.
"Could you? I can't bring her to the daycare, they still have a lice outbreak"
"I don't know man, I'd have to ask Voight"
Not only were they doing paperwork but they were working a current case as well and had a suspect in the cage and Jay didn't feel easy having his young niece in the same building as the suspect, with any suspect. If they so much as looked at Luna it wouldn't take them long to put two and two together and his little niece would be used against him.
"I know it's a lot to ask but you're my last resort. And I really have to go. Please Jay? I'll owe you. I'll pay you"
"Alright alright. I got her go on before your late"
"Thank you little brother" He went and kissed his daughter's head and left.
After his brother left the detective looked to his desk to see his niece spinning around in his chair. He wasn't sure how to run this by Voight. He went over and leaned down to her.
"You gotta go to the lounge kiddo," Jay tells her.
"But I wanna stay here at your desk Uncle Jay, please" She looked at him with the same puppy dog eyes.
"Sorry sweetheart, I'm working and besides you're not old enough to see or hear what we're gonna be talking about. And your dad would kill me"
She giggled. "You're afraid of dad?"
"Just a little"
As he was bringing his niece to the lounge Hank emerged from his office and saw the little girl. The older man always had a soft spot for children and for the youngest Halstead.
"Make sure she stays in there today," Hank told his detective.
"I will Sarge, thanks for letting her stay," Jay replied.
"You're welcome"
Jay got his niece set up in the lounge while the others were working the case. The table had her IPad, coloring books, crayons, color pencils, and her lunch bag. The eight-year-old looked at her uncle.
"Uncle Jay I wanna help you work"
"LuLu you need to stay here. I'm serious. As soon as I'm done, I'll take you to the park"
"But Uncle Jay"
"Luna stay here in this room"
"Yes sir"
Jay kissed his niece's head and went back out, closing the door. The case they were working on was a triple murder homicide and multiple negligent arsons. They had a suspect in the cage, they just had to tie the murders and arsons to him. Arson was a hard thing to prove.
"I can try to get him to confess, we already know he did it. We just need a confession" Jay said.
"He won't talk, no way he will," Antonio spoke.
"Antonio is right. Getting him to talk will be like pulling teeth, we gotta put Evens at the scene of the arsons" Hank speaks from the whiteboard area.
While the team was talking, the door to the lounge opened very quietly and slowly, Luna made her way out from the small room and made her way around the white board and looked at the pictures of the burnt firehouses, the few pictures of the dead body.
"Luna!"
The eight-year-old jumped hearing her uncle's voice and saw the stern glare on his face. She went back to the lounge as Jay followed her, closing the door with a small slam. This case was affecting Jay because one of the murder victims served in the Military, they had served with Jay.
"I thought I told you to stay here" Jay told her sternly, crossing his arms.
"I just wanna help Uncle Jay" Her voice was small. "I think I might know where the person will go next"
"But I told you to stay here!"
"I'm sorry"
"Jay" Came another voice, it was Antonio. "You got a minute?"
"Give me a second"
"Now"
Jay turned and went out the door following his friend, after they went out Luna slipped out going the other way crying, her backpack on her shoulders. Antonio looked at his friend with a look.
"I know this case is getting to you but that doesn't give you the right to take it out on Luna. She's a child" Antonio told him.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap at her" Jay replied softly.
"I think you need to tell her that"
When Jay turned back and saw the lounge empty, his niece was gone. Her stuff still spread out on the table. His heart started to race in his chest.
"Where's Luna?"
Luna was walking around and found herself on the second floor where the bathrooms were. She kept walking, she found a door and opened it and it showed a case of stairs and she went down them.
She got to the back garage area of the district where Hank had kept the cage. She looked around amazed, she wiped her eyes and looked. When she saw the cage she looked at the man inside.
The man inside saw the young girl and grinned. He knew he could get her to let him out. "Hey kid, come over here"
"I don't know. My dad and Uncle Jay said I should never talk to strangers"
"Who's your uncle Jay?"
"He's a detective here. He's Detective Halstead"
When the little girl revealed the last name he couldn't help but grin but he held it back not wanting her to catch on. This could be his chance to escape and have a little leverage.
"Your uncle and I are friends"
Luna furrowed her brow. "Uncle Jay never mentioned you before"
"I was out of town for work I just came back recently"
Something wasn't right. She was getting a bad feeling about this but she was believing him. Why did it seem as if she saw his face somewhere?
"What's your name kid?"
"Luna"
"Luna. Such a pretty name. Do you want to help me?"
"Help you how?"
"I'm supposed to help Jay find the person he's looking for but he locked me in here. Can you help me by unlocking this door?"
"I don't know, I should go ask Uncle Jay"
"It's alright, he said . It was ok for me to come out. I just don't know where the key is"
Luna started looking for the key but couldn't find it which meant Hank had it or one of the others had it. "I can't find it"
He mentally cursed them, if the key wasn't there then they had it. Shaking his head he returned the look. "If you can't find the key, you can find something to break the door open and together we can help your uncle solve his case"
She nodded and started looking all to find something, it was like they kept everything hidden. Until Luna found a big black duffle bag and unzipped it to see different tools and other stuff inside. A screwdriver had caught her greenish hazel eyes, picking it up she went back to him going to the cage.
"I found this"
"That will do just fine, let me have it"
She slid the tool between the metal bars and he took it as he started messing with the lock on it. Rapid footsteps were approaching from the backstair case.
"Luna! Luna!"
Hearing her name the young girl turned and saw Jay running down the steps with Hank in tow. She saw the worried and panicked look on her uncle's face.
"Uncle Jay, what's wrong?" She asked.
"Sweetheart, come over to me. Now. That man is very dangerous" Jay told her.
"He said he's your friend and it was ok for him to come out"
"He lied to you, he's very dangerous. Come to me and Hank"
The door to the cage opened and the guy roughly grabbed Luna making her squeal. "Uncle Jay!"
Hank went for his weapon aiming it at the bastard holding the youngest Halstead. Jay's eyes nearly popped out of his head, his young niece was in danger and it was all his fault. If he hadn't yelled at her and made her run off. This wouldn't be happening. More importantly if anything happened to her, Will would kill him.
"Owens, let the girl go. She ain't got nothing to do with this. Just let her come to me" Jay told him calmly, while trying to get Hank to lower his weapon.
"I don't think so Uncle Jay" Owens taunted him.
"Owens please. Let her go, she's innocent"
"I don't think I will. She's coming with me" The screwdriver still in his hand, he brought it up to the young girl's face. Taking the tip of the tool to her face and gently bringing it down her face.
Luna whimpered. "Uncle Jay"
"Owens, if you want a body take me. If you want any leverage, take me" Jay told the man.
He kept backing out of the garage the farther he was moving out, Jay was moving to him. Owens then held the screwdriver at the little girl's neck making Jay freeze in his place. The frightened detective saw the silver tip right at his niece's neck vein.
"Uncle Jay, I'm scared. I want dad" Luna whimpered.
"Well this has been fun Sergeant, Detective, but we've gotta go," Owens said.
When backed further out he went and he looked making sure his path was clear he put Luna down holding her wrist tightly. Jay followed him running.
"Luna! Luna!"
"Uncle Jay! Uncle Jay!"
He kept running following his niece's cries but he lost them in the growing crowd. His brother was going to kill him.
