The battle has been won and now peace can be found in the wake of destruction. All we can ask is that the valiant fighters who fought bravely in spite of everything return to normalcy soundly.

Time: March - Day 5 - Afternoon
I exhaled deeply, allowing my body to release most of my pent up tension. The Heterupts lost. The war is finally over. And yet when I looked across the battle torn swamp and what we all had witnessed, I couldn't totally relax. Everything happened so quickly, it was hard to believe what had just happened. It's like I experienced it from another perspective.
The natives were bustling about assisting their own injured allies, while clearing up splintered trees and shattered boulders. The bog was filled with new craters from the explosions of attacks. Entire trees were strewn about after having been smashed through or dug out of the ground to be used as battering rams. Streams of dirty water flowed throughout the swamp even moreso, making the land even more difficult to walk on.
This was the end of the war, but the natives still had to pass judgment on their assailants and repair their broken land. The Compound Corps benefitted akin to how mercenaries would, reaping the profits of foreign conflicts, but besides that… so much was lost.
So this is why wild pokemon conflicts rarely get too wild? So much carnage to their own land… this has to be why even humans avoid war.
Although, it did seem like Amethyst had done some quick assistance on her own part, courtesy of Kakuen's face. She had dug new streams and cleared extra rubble by smashing him through it. Even when driven by endless fury she took extra precaution to better nature.
"Well," Lyle broke the silence, looking at me and Eva, mildly concerned. "How're you two holding up, now it's all over?"
Eva took out a handkerchief and wiped sweat off her brow. "Well enough. Sylvia shielded my team from Kakuen's last gambit too."
Although she was standing, she did look very tired. Her clothes were scuffed up and dirted with mud implying she had been rolling in it. I hadn't seen much of her fight, but it looked like it got a bit dicey. But since she was fine, my focus turned elsewhere.
"Where's Holyn? I lost track of him after Violet got hit," I questioned, scanning the area. "Holyn! Where are you?"
{Here!} His familiar roar echoed from some bushes. He hopped past them as he attempted to make his way towards me only to lose his strength halfway. I rushed over to catch him, holding him firm in my arms as I rested him down gently.
{I'm… here…} He panted, his entire body shaking from pain. I looked him over to finally see all the damage he had sustained, the bruises from Kakuen's many strikes upon him. He had pushed through it all with his primal instincts and willpower, but now that he had a moment to breathe, he had a moment to suffer. {I'm sorry… I couldn't save Jade or Violet… I really tried…}
I held him close, rubbing his head gently. "I asked so much from you lately and you've done it all without complaints. You did everything right and no one will blame you for that, so rest up, okay?"
{Mm… hmmm,} he mumbled back at me as he closed his eyes. I recalled him to his pokeball, feeling a bit more at ease he was fine.
Donut and Holyn down with Lou still standing. Just like against Jubilee.
A little ways away, I saw Zenara standing next to Lou. She was still standing strong, evolution had given her more than enough energy. And she was her, she had energy to spare. But all the same, she was holding one of Lou's legs, like I held my grandparents' hands when I was small. She was talking with him some, and she looked okay, but with how Violet and Amethyst had left… I wasn't sure.
One problem at a time. They went to the hospital, they're fine.
"Where's your mom and Wilona?" I asked Eva, turning to her.
"After we defeated Riev, they had to deal with some swamp gases erupting and causing more destruction from his flames. Near the end of that, she called the League while my team and I came here to assist. They should be here in a few minutes to retrieve the ones who surrendered and do damage control," Eva answered. "I also spotted my mom and Wilona deflecting Kakuen's desperation attack, so they should be close by."
"Alright… that's good…" I muttered to myself. We were gonna have more help and our pokemon needed treatment. "Donut and Holyn have taken heavy damage. I'm not good enough to treat them myself; we need a pokemon center. So… I think we should leave once the League gets here."
"Then I will…" She hesitated considering what she should do. "Mom would probably appreciate me being here, but if you could take my team-"
{Nope, we're a package deal, Eva! So we all should stay!} Sylvia meowed, rushing over with Marjorie and Clarabel, all of whom had been helping some wild pokemon get on their feet.
None of them were free from injuries though. They could go on a bit longer, but a visit to the center would do them very well.
"So clearly that went less than perfectly," Isadora noted as she walked up, Wilona right by her side. Neither of them seemed worse for wear much at all. "Where's the rest of you? I saw Amethyst dealing with Kakuen, but I figured they would've been with you all."
"They warped ahead," Lyle answered. "Jade and Violet got hit. Nothing life threatening, but still. They needed actual doctors, not me an' Alkali."
Isadora sighed deeply, looking at us. "I'll need to hear the whole story later. Eva, Topaz, how are you and your teams holding up?"
"Donut and Holyn are down. Lou is completely fine though," I gestured towards him talking to Zenara. "Eva's team is hurt, but they can all move at least. Guess we know who the best trainer here is at the end of the day…" I laughed dryly, earning a pity smile from Eva.
Isadora nodded at me, looking at Eva and her team. "I'd recommend you all head back to Pastoria, but if you'd be more comfortable with me, you can stay." Her gaze softened slightly. "Really though, you should prioritize yourselves. Me and Wilona are fine, we'll catch up later."
Eva looked severely displeased. She really didn't want to be separated. "You won't take too long… right?"
The two walked over, Isadora hugging Eva while Wilona nudged her before tending to Sylvia, Marjorie and Clarabel.
"We'll be back before the end of the day. Promise. We'll all need to come back soon, I just need to make sure everyone gets where they need to be. And right now, that includes you not passing out from overexertion. Wilona will be helping converse with the locals, make sure everything's taken care of, and then we'll head back." She gave her a small grin. "Unless you don't think we can make it back by nightfall?"
"You said it, not me," Eva retorted, seeming a lot better now. It seemed her anxiety gave Clarabel anxiety, but Wilona calmed her down too. "Alright, we should say goodbye to the others. Our part is over."
"Right, now where are they… ah!" I pointed in a few yards away to find Meliae lifting a tree that had fallen on some natives. All the others were nearby as well helping. Lou and I exchanged a quick glance as we all converged together, him leading Zenara along.
{So you're leaving, then?} Meliae questioned, gazing at us all.
{The prime time for it,} Gautier answered somberly. {We've completed the task we were assigned and now Wilona and Isadora will finish the rest. It makes sense to leave…} He appeared in a similar mood to Zenara. His team left without him too.
Meliae seemed to understand, as she nodded and looked at Isadora and Wilona. {We will converse after, then.} She gazed back at us. {There is still much to be done, to recover what the Heterupts destroyed. But I hope you return within the coming days, once you have recovered yourselves.}
"We all will. Besides, it's not a proper goodbye when a bunch of us are out of commission," I affirmed.
{The hardest part is over. The rest takes time,} Cenza added. {I know everyone is eager to get back to fixing their territories right up.}
{And to tend to our injured,} Meliae added. {Then I suppose this is 'see you soon' rather than farewell.} She inclined her head. {All the same, there are no words to convey our thanks. This problem was dealt with much faster thanks to your help, and with far fewer casualties. Though it may be insufficient, I thank you all the same.}
{It was only right we dealt with this issue fully after having left it unfinished all those months ago, but your gratitude warms our hearts. It was an honor fighting alongside you and your people, Meliae,} Lou buzzed nobly. {You as well, Rheneas. Your bravery is an inspiration.}
{Just because it was right does not mean it would be done,} Meliae responded. {You finished the battle you nearly did before. And that deserves our gratitude.}
Rheneas chuckled awkwardly. {I dunno about me being brave, given what you all did, but I'm glad I could help. I'll be happy if we don't have to deal with that kinda person for a long time.}
{I hope so too… I just want to go home and enjoy a nice polish,} Clarabel wished.
{I can't wait to tell Sylvester about all the adventures we had! Marjorie, you've gotta help me re-enact the best scenes,} Sylvia insisted.
{Hmmm, that does sound fun. Alright, I'll play Evangeline then,} Marjorie insisted.
"Then it only makes sense I play as you," Eva retorted.
{I will be watching closely so no mistakes,} Marjorie joked cheekily as she glanced over to a quiet Mareeta. {So, have you decided your next move or do you need more time?}
She grimaced. {I… need to be there whenever Bloom meets her fate. But after that… I want to go home. I just hope it's still home…}
Marjorie smiled softly back at her. {It might be a difficult adjustment, but hopefully your troop understands everything you endured.}
{I hope so…}
Her struggles were far from over, even if she did return to Lush Jungle and met her troop again. She's experienced who knows how long of subjugation alongside her former best friend and the worst people I've ever met.
But perhaps… I can make her healing journey a bit easier.
"Hey Mareeta," I called her out. "After you've finished her business in the Great Marsh, you mind if we talk? I know some people in Alola that could make life a bit easier for you."
She gave me a curious glance. {Uh, sure… I'll remember that then.}
"Just something else to ponder," I added.
Lou raised an eye, realizing what I meant. {Hmmm… a sensible proposal, General. Something to discuss later.}
He then turned to Tanya. {What's the situation on our side, Corporal?}
She saluted. {Founder General Sir, all troops have sustained only superficial injuries at worst. We will assist in the cleanup of the battlefield, then return to the Hive. A small party will return for the promised supplies in the coming days. We do not intend on taking resources they cannot give.}
{Well done, Corporal, I could not suggest a better course myself,} he then turned to face Tanya properly, showcasing a slightly softer look. {I do not have the time to say it to everyone today, so please relay this to the others. My gratitude and pride in all of you is boundless. Lead your soldiers home and rejoice in a victory against oppression. I imagine Clover and the others will be elated to welcome you home with ample honeycomb and a new title.}
Tanya clicked her mandibles, pleased. {We all know the pride you have in us, sir. But I'll make sure to remind them. You're a busy bug, but we hope to see you at the Hive again soon, now that spring has come. Then we can rejoice as a colony, properly.}
{Once everything has settled I'll return. For now, I must accompany my General and comrades. Send an envoy when the disposal of the Heterupt commanders is meant to commence. Amethyst, Mareeta and I must attend,} he added.
She nodded, standing at attention. {It will be done, sir. Thank you again for calling on us to help quell avian adjutants.}
Lou saluted her with one of his free legs as she hopped away to handle her own affairs. As we looked to the sky, we saw several League hover cars begin their descent into a clearing within the Oozaru Bog. Alongside them emerging from the trees were several Pokemon Rangers rushing in, mounted on various Pokemon. Immediately, the League and Rangers began setting up their own treatment camp and working alongside the natives to expedite healing and clean-up. One of the League members waved at Isadora, whom she waved back at.
{I'm always surprised by how fast they get to work,} Clarabel noted.
{That's what I think when we all charge into battle. I used to think I could never be so coordinated and fast, but all it takes is some training and a cool head,} Cenza affirmed, surging with a newfound confidence. Although, it was dampened by worry for our friends.
"We should wave over a League member to-" Eva began as one of the hover cars ascended to fly over to us. It was a convertible model, so we couldn't see what was inside the hood until it slowly leaned back to reveal Volkner sitting comfortably in the driver's seat and beside him a familiar Marshtomp.
"Yo," he said, as he gave us all a small wave.
"Volkner!?" I questioned.
{And an evolved River. We weren't the only ones at work,} Lou added.
River glanced over the wild pokemon amongst our group. {Oh, you're the famous Meliae, right? And Rheneas, you became a fighter too?}
Rheneas chuckled awkwardly again. {Fighter is a bit of a stretch. I just helped out.}
Meliae smiled, craning her neck down. {And you are River, then. I have heard much about you.}
So Rheneas and River are friends? Small world.
"Sup nephew, you look better than I expected," Volkner noted as he leapt out of the car alongside River. It was hard to believe it was her. It had only been five days since we last saw her, yet she was brimming with a self-assurance she hadn't had before.
"Why are you two here?" I was still processing that my uncle was standing before me. After seeing Isadora and Eva being so familial these last few days it sort of reminded me how much I loved my own family.
"We're here to pick you up. Figured you and your friends would appreciate it, so we tagged along with the marsh team since we got the call," he answered simply as he leaned over me to look at everyone else. "Quite a few new faces… and several missing ones. Should I be concerned?"
Before I could answer his question I hugged him tightly. We weren't a hugging family and it didn't need to be a trend, but I really just wanted firm confirmation that he was here. He was less shocked than I expected, but still unused to this expression from me. Even so, he rubbed my back without a word.
I leaned back slightly. "We need to go to Cloudpool Memorial Hospital, everyone missing is getting treatment there."
"Alright, so some concern is warranted. Let's go then," he said, as he gestured towards the car. His calmness was reassuring. "I'd like to thank you for looking out for my nephew, Isadora, but it turns out my two other kids are in the hospital so I've gotta go. Evangeline, you coming?"
"Oh um, yes please," she replied hastily, snapping herself out of a daze. "Sorry, I'm more tired than I thought. We'll see you soon everyone. Come home quick, Mom."
Isadora gave Eva another hug, while Wilona nuzzled Sylvia, Marjorie and Clarabel. "We'll be back soon, sweetheart." After rubbing her back and letting go, she gave a small smile at Volkner. "We'll catch up later."
Eva recalled Sylvia and Clarabel, while myself, her, Zenara, Cenza, Gautier, Marjorie and Mareeta settled onto the hovercraft.
"You staying, Lyle, Alkali?" Volkner asked.
He nodded, giving Volkner a smile while jabbing his thumb back towards the swamp. "Figured me an' Alkali would stick around, make some friends, clean up after leftover slavers. I don't have anyone missing me any more'n normal, and maybe we'll find something cool. We'll see ya later."
I leaned over to look at them properly. "Thanks for saving Jade and helping him when I couldn't. I dunno what I would've done, but it wouldn't have been as good as you."
Lyle waved me off while Alkali snickered. {Just keep our quality services in mind when you need something.} He shook his head before smiling. {Seriously though, we're just glad we helped. That's what we aim to do, after all.}
I smiled back at them as we began to ascend into the sky, Lou flying alongside us. Meliae glanced at the ground before looking at us. {One moment.}
She craned her neck down to the ground, before raising it up again to be level with our car. She didn't even have to stretch. On her head was the same Teddiursa that Violet had leapt to protect, still holding the sitrus berry. They held it out, trembling slightly.
{She wants you to give the berry to Violet or Jade, whoever needs it more. And wants to know if Violet is alright,} Meliae spoke gently.
I nodded, smiling back at the Teddiursa as I gently took the berry. "Violet will be just fine. She's taken worse shots than that and bounced back better than ever. Once she feels better she'll be right back here to show you," I promised. "Both Violet and Jade will be back, and they'll be so happy to know you're thinking about them."
She breathed a sigh of relief, giving me a worried smile before patting Meliae's head twice. Meliae lowered her head again, setting down the Teddiursa before rising up again to look at us. {Now go, and make good on your word of making sure the two are alright.}
I gave her a thumbs up as we all began to ascend even higher. As we rose, the raucous cheer of countless native pokemon began to resound across the swamp. Cheering for us and our safe departure. Volkner gave us a small smile as we all leaned forward to wave goodbye as we flew off towards Pastoria City.
As we began to fly over the trees, a new figure caught my eye hidden amidst the trees. I couldn't see them completely due to the angle, but they appeared to be a large quadrupedal Ursaring. Or at least something close to it. Before I could get a closer look they returned deeper into the bush leaving an incredibly large paw print.

Location: Cloudpool Memorial Hospital - Pastoria City
Time: March - Day 5 - Afternoon
Things moved quickly once we arrived at the hospital. Volkner handled the adult parts, we were just directed by medical staff and followed their orders. I thankfully got an update on our friends who had gotten here before us and they were already receiving treatment.
Eva and I sent the rest of our teams to get their own check-ups. Lou insisted he was fine so we shouldn't waste resources on him, so I had to remind him we have to utilize resources for them to not go to waste. He went along after that, but Imma be honest. He's dirty at worst.
As for Eva and myself, we were checked out to ensure we hadn't acquired any concerning infections or diseases while mucking around in a swamp for five days. Fortunately, there were no issues there for us or our pokemon. All of us were vaccinated and had been cautious all trip.
Eva ended up needing some treatment for some minor burns around her wrists. Nothing serious due to her sturdy clothes and innate magical barrier, but damage was sustained. As for me… I was fine. Honestly. Scraping my knee when I tripped walking through Augurite Road prolly did more damage to me than any of our opponents. Unlike the others I hadn't been hit by any direct attacks, so besides some cuts and bruises from the wilderness I was cleared quickly.
Once our check-ups were finished we finally had a chance to take a shower and change into more casual clothes. It was liberating. I love nature as much as anyone and while it was beautiful at times, the Great Marsh is very much a marshy land. Not a suitable environment for me and I was glad to finally have a chance to deep clean the dirt.
Once that was finished I just laid in my hospital bed to stare up into the ceiling. The exhaustion was beating down upon me, but I couldn't sleep yet. I had to know how everyone else was doing and then I could finally rest and put this day behind me.
Although… It'll prolly take everyone a while to get ready. I'll just rest my eyes so I don't fall asleep later.
Some point after I closed my eyes I felt a fleecy poke. {Zio? Zio, c'mon get up, we gotta go meet up with everybody.}
I mumbled in protest at the insistence I move. I manifested Donut and simply rolled over to the side. That was my first mistake as I received a jolt up my spine, awakening me as I shot up straight. I found myself staring at Zenara and Lou waiting patiently. Well, Lou anyway.
{You're looking well, General. It seems the swamp truly was souring your disposition,} Lou noted. {I figured we should visit our incapacitated comrades.}
"Right… sorry," I yawned, as I got off the bed.
I stood next to Zenara and was momentarily startled by how much taller she had gotten, then I remember she was standing on her hind legs now. It made sense why she was taller. "How are you two feeling? Evolving everything you ever hoped for Zenara?"
She smirked, shadowboxing a bit. {You know it! I'm glad I got to punch that prick like he deserved.} Her smile faded a bit as she looked up at me. {I'll be happier when we make sure Violet's okay, though. Then we can celebrate together.}
{I'm no healer, but remember she withstood Meowstic's Shadow Ball to save Cenza's life last year and his special attacks were much stronger than whatever Kakuen could muster. She was simply caught more unprepared this time; she will bounce back as she has before,} Lou comforted her.
Zenara nodded, bumping him with her head gently. {I know. It just won't feel right 'till we're together again, y'know?}
Lou buzzed comfortingly. {With all my being.}
With that we made our way to Jade and Violet's room, apparently they were sharing one. Isadora and the others who stayed had already returned by this point and everyone else had already gone ahead of us, so it was just us three left to visit. Although, when we got to the door I could sense some… tension in the air. The familiar tension of a sassy cat. But what I mostly heard was the anger in her voice as she berated whomever she was speaking to.
{And doing what we're supposed to do could've gotten Violet killed if she wasn't as tough as she is!}
"Errr… I'm gonna knock," I informed the others as I knocked on the door to see if we'd be welcome. "Uhhh… can Lou, Zenara and I come in?"
There was a brief pause. Then, the door was opened from within, though no one was next to it. Instead, I saw the wisps of Amethyst's psychic hold fading from the doorknob. She was floating above the foot of Violet's bed, fury etched across her face. Violet was awake and listening, though not seeming thoroughly perturbed by what was happening. That didn't say much though, she didn't emote much. Nor did Volkner and Roland, who were clearly the target of Amethyst's ire.
Despite the air being thick with tension, Zenara brightened immediately at seeing Violet was awake already. She ran over and hugged her, Violet hugging her back. {You're okay!}
"Nothing that will impede us," Violet responded softly, a small smile on her face.
My heart eased a bit at the sight of her fine and well. Then my eyes fell upon Jade in the bed over by the window. He was covered in bandages and seemed to have more advanced equipment treating his injuries. His expression was filled with discomfort and exhaustion, but his sullen eyes brightened a bit when he saw I had entered the room. Flax sat by his side, ignoring everything going on in the room, but he did nod when he saw us walk in.
"Jade… you alright?" I asked hesitantly, unsure if I should come closer.
{Nothing that can't be fixed,} Flax answered for him. {He's happy to see you, but don't talk to him much. He's tired and needs rest.}
"I can speak for myself, Flax…" Jade stated slowly.
{You can. But I'm responsible for you, so I'm making sure you don't stress yourself out…} He side-eyed Amethyst. {Not the most relaxing place, but she helped us out so it's whatever.}
{Yeah well someone,} she said with a pointed look at Roland, {Said I shouldn't just leave shit out to dry. So here we are, 'cause I'm not aboutta wait for an explanation.}
{You're upset your sister got hurt on a mission and that's understandable,} Roland stated plainly. {But you each understood the risks. Blaming us is irrational.}
One of Amethyst's eyes twitched. {Oh it's irrational is it? So it's irrational to be worried about what happens after a fight I could've ended in seconds got prolonged and got people hurt because of your rules? Somehow that's my fault? I literally wiped the floor with him when I stopped piddling about, I could've and would've started with that! And who's the one who said if I went 'too far' again then we'd have the League on our asses?}
{What? You're blaming us because you held back?} Roland asked, genuinely confused.
{I'm blaming your Arceus damned probation and its rules that the League shackled us with for doing their jobs better than they could!} Amethyst retorted sharply.
"Probation?" I questioned, now equally confused. "What are you talking about? That ended months ago."
She gave me a look. {No it-} she stopped abruptly, and I felt her poke my mind slightly. {No, you're not lying, you think it did.} She glared back at Roland and Volkner. {Fuckin' explain.}
"Did you forget? Back when Roland and Topaz were out I brought you all into my office. We had a nice lil bonding moment, I said how you were doing really well with everyone. You met River during it," Volkner explained. "I told you that your probation was over and you were basically free as anyone."
{No you did fucking not,} Amethyst spat. {Sure, all the first parts happened, and you showed reports of us. You didn't say a goddamn thing about the probation being over. Me and Violet figured it was a bullshit midway 'oh keep up being law abiding' checkup.}
"I swear I did, lemme ask River," Volkner protested as he summoned her from her pokeball. "River, didn't I tell them their probation was over?"
She tilted her head at him. {Probation? That's a new word. What's this about?}
{So you can't recall Volkner ever mentioning that word?} Lou asked.
{I mean… it means someone is like on thin ice, right? When he was talking to Amethyst and Violet it sounded like the ice was pretty solid,} River admitted.
"He did not," Violet affirmed, glancing at Volkner. "Myself and Amethyst did not hear him say anything specific about probation. We contemplated asking him on our status, but determined that would be counterintuitive."
{Cuz going 'oh yeah are we not on probation anymore' is a real fuckin' bad look if you're being watched,} Amethyst groaned.
{Wait, Topaz wasn't there. How does he know it ended?} River spoke up.
"Volkner told me literally right after he told them," I explained. "He said they were pretty happy, for Violet's standards, and were looking forward to doing more productive work. And that my report really eased the League's concerns."
{That's when I found out as well,} Roland continued.
Amethyst closed her eyes, rubbing her temples in irritation. {So lemme get this straight. Everyone but me and Violet, and by extension Zenara, heard Volkner say this to Topaz and Roland. But when it comes to us, one of the only other people there, that being River, remembers shit going exactly the same way me and Violet do.} She looked at Volkner. {So you told everyone but us?!}
"Wait," Volkner held up a hand. "Lemme think, there's a lot to think about, but I'll remember if you just give me a second."
He closed his eyes, scrunching his face for a solid ten seconds as he silently mouthed the entire conversation he had with them months ago. When he opened his eyes he looked painfully awkward. "...oh."
Roland's face grew dark as he tilted it all the way to face his trainer, who was looking anywhere but him. Amethyst tugged down on her face in exasperation before looking to Roland. {Roland? I'm sorry for blaming you, clearly the blame lies with the dumb shit human here instead of you.}
{Did you not give them the report?} Roland asked.
{There's a report he was supposed to give us?!} Amethyst cried, the psychic energy around her shuddering.
"It's the report I was talking about! Topaz's statement was a part of it! It's what I was reading to you when you were at my desk, but I figured, hey they prolly don't care. Imma let Destiny archive it or whatever she does with League documents," Volkner admitted awkwardly.
Amethyst was quietly screaming while Violet looked at me. "Topaz, your uncle is a colossal imbecile."
{Violet could've died because you forgot to give us a piece of paper! Jade too!}
Jade leaned up, his jaw agape and the burst of adrenaline fueling him. "We got fucked because Volkner forgot to tell you you're allowed to maim people again!?"
Volkner made a face. "That's not-"
{No you shut the fuck up,} Amethyst cut him off before she looked at Jade. {Literally yes! I would've ended that before Kakuen could've hurt himself let alone anyone else! Bitch wouldn't have stood a chance, but I held back because I thought we'd have to go on the run otherwise!}
Roland turned to face Amethyst. {On behalf of my trainer, I apologize. He is…} Roland sighed deeply. {He is not one for clerical work.}
"Unbelievably, irreparably, incomprehensibly forgetful of vital information and the conveyance thereof?" Violet suggested.
"Listen…" Volkner sighed, deeply. "I'm truly sorry. I thought I told you or implied it, but then you asked me about my own opinions and that sent me on a totally different train of thought."
{We're not gonna listen because you'd forget to say what you're asking us to listen to!} Amethyst took a deep breath. {FUCK.} She looked at Lou. {Please tell me you have something I can break. I need to atomize something.}
{I see I've been neglecting your well-being simply because you are stronger than most,} Lou noted. {I'll have to set aside time to consider Amethyst venting drills.}
"So ummm… since we're on this topic," Volkner said sheepishly as he tapped something on his phone. Violet lifted up her tablet and squinted. "Congratulations… you're off probation…"
Amethyst's eye twitched before she looked at Violet. They had a silent conversation before Amethyst threw open the window roughly and shot across the sky, wind whistling behind her.
"She is going to de-stress," Violet said simply.
Lou flew towards the window. {Time to test out the new venting drills.} And he flew right after her.
"So… Violet, how are you taking this?" I asked awkwardly.
She considered it for a moment before shrugging. "I am alright. Volkner is a human, I was wondering in what capacity his innate ineptitude would show itself. I have now found out. I am… less concerned with my personal well-being than Amethyst believes I should be, so my state is minimally concerning. If you wish to see what is a more typical reaction towards self-injury, I direct you to Jade."
"I've known Volkner for a long time and for a big shot gym leader this actually is pretty on brand for him," Jade shrugged. "If it's not related to battling or machines, you should prolly ask Destiny or Zachary." His expression soured quickly. "Still dude, what the fuck?"
"Once again, I'm really sorry. I think I said it in my head, but never aloud…" Volkner admitted. In the background, I could see gouts of psychic energy tearing open channels in the ocean, ripping water up and letting it fall back down again.
Roland sighed. {Well… you've done that before, so it's nothing new. Alas, what's done is done. There's nothing else critical pertaining to you or your peers, Violet, so there's no cause for concern there.}
"That is good to know," Violet said with a nod. "Thank you for imparting vital information."
I couldn't help but chuckle at that slight jab. "Alright, I think we're good here. I'll leave you guys to relax, but I have one last gift for both of you."
I pulled out the sitrus berry I got from Teddiursa. "It's from the Teddiursa Violet saved. She wanted whoever was most hurt to get this, but… I think she'd still appreciate it if you each got half. Ya know, since you both look… rough."
"I will be fine," Violet affirmed, though she smiled at the mention of the Teddiursa. "But I will not refuse such kindness."
Jade looked more surprised. "Oh, so she was running around giving hurt people berries… huh…" It was as though he hadn't considered any of the wild pokemon to risk their safety to help him.
I split the berry down the middle and handed each half to them. "Don't worry, I washed it beforehand. I think you'll both really like it though. Ya better thank Teddiursa once you see her again. Okay?"
"Of course," Violet immediately replied. "She deserves much more than mere thanks."
"I will savor this berry and her kindness," Jade responded, smiling uncharacteristically soft as he stared at the berry.
"You both deserve it," I reminded them as I headed for the door. "Come on, uncle."
Volkner followed suit with an annoyed Roland and confused River right behind him. It was from that day on I realized I could trust Volkner with so much, but never paperwork… and that I should really check to see if our bills were actually being paid.

PoV: Topaz Heart
Location: Sunyshore City
Time: A Week Later - March
Now that everything had smoothed over, everything else went along pretty fast. We met Cynthia on the way, Heimdall and her having begun heading over after he sensed Amethyst's flaring Aura. They both chewed out Volkner once they found out why.
Once Eva and her team were cleared they left with Isadora and Wilona for home at dusk, promising to meet up with us at the Great Marsh once the natives were ready. Since Lou and Amethyst were going back sooner to see the executions, Mareeta was to return to Sunyshore along with us.
Jade and Violet were too injured to travel all the way from Pastoria to Sunyshore, so they were going to stay a bit longer till they were more mobile. Amethyst, Zenara and Flax remained to attend to them. It was probably best Amethyst wasn't around Volkner for a few days as well.
Donut, Holyn and Shizu's injuries were the most severe of the pokemon's so they were to stay at the hospital for overnight observations and be transferred to the Sunyshore Center in the morning.
Holyn was battered to his limits, so he just needed healing and rest. Shizu's horn needed repair as they're the major focal point of her dark energies. Donut's tiny body was pretty bruised from Margrave's last efforts, but the physicians did inform me Donut broke through his electrical limits so he should be stronger from now on. Apparently, since he never goes all out he just capped his power lower than it should be, but now he had more to work with.
The rest of the pokemon were well enough to go home after standard treatment. It might've not been immediately apparent to some, but it was evident everyone had grown significantly in power since we had started.
All the battle experience promoted growth within them all and Cenza seemed to reap the benefits most of all. She was generally more spry and upbeat than ever before. Still incapable of electric moves, but her fairy attacks were especially potent.
Everyone back home was elated to see us all home safe and sound. All who prepped us wanted to hear exactly how we managed in the field. Rogelio was curious about how many bonds we had forged. From what I heard from Garland, Lucrecia nearly had a panic attack when she saw Jade's dad bring him home in a wheelchair, but they had a plan in place to calm her down.
According to Jade, he was going to be fine. He couldn't really move much for a while, but he'd be back to normal soon. The doctors said his body would adapt to this damage and he'd grow to be more durable. Not durable enough to make this a regular occurrence, but it's something to be gained and he was satisfied with that.
When Violet, Amethyst and Zenara came home, we were there to greet them. The most Violet had was a limp from her back still healing, but Zenara was more than happy to assist. Roland was there with arms crossed, and Volkner still looking awkward.
"How you holdin' up?" I asked.
"Well enough," she replied simply.
Amethyst gave me a small grin. {Hold out your hand.}
Concerned, but curious I did so. She plopped a few rough gemstones into my hand. {I made those the other day, figured you'd want 'em. I certainly don't.}
I immediately brightened as I examined the gems. "I was hoping you'd bring them back! Kind of crazy how you can just do that, but I'm not complainin'."
She chuckled, then shot a dirty look at Volkner. {As for you. You're gonna rue the day you thought we wouldn't care about an important piece of paper. I won't let you know peace until I decide you've had enough, so get ready for hell.}
{A bold statement to make in my presence. Will there be a problem?} Roland inquired.
Amethyst waved him off. {Nope. I ain't gonna do anything that bad. Worst he'll get is probably a few stubbed toes. And it's just at him, so don't worry.}
Roland sighed. {Well, if it keeps you from pressurizing more of the landscape.}
She grinned at me. {You'll be happy about this too; I know you're not a fan of how much coffee Volkner drinks.}
"Oh this'll be entertaining," I chuckled.
Volkner pinched the bridge of his nose. "Sure, it'll be."
Amethyst and Zenara were right by Violet's side as she recovered, though clearly Amethyst found time to fuck with Volkner. I found him sputtering, when Amethyst intermittently swapped the sugar with salt for his coffee. She didn't even do it much, but it left him paranoid. She did no such thing with the tea I provided. She sent me a picture of how she'd moved everything of Volkner's six inches to the left, and how she reordered his filing cabinets so he'd have to actually look through them. He questioned how she made it so his pillow was never cold on either side, and she just smirked at him.
Both Donut and Zenara were quieter most days though. Donut spent ample time sleeping and recharging himself, which caused concern, but I let him sleep. He deserved it. Zenara though appeared more introspective. I caught her daydreaming more intensely than she ever had before, as if she was processing her entire life moment by moment.
Once again, Lou insisted I leave her be as we were all relaxing and re-examining past events. We'd talk about our thoughts when we were ready and I had no objections. Mareeta spent most of her time outside of meals on her own, giving short greetings whenever we went to see her but mostly staying away from everyone else.
Until the day of the commanders' execution.
As Lou requested, a Mothim appeared a week after the battle to inform Lou the execution was soon to begin. At a last moment's request, Cenza insisted that she come along as well, which the others obliged readily. All Amethyst needed to do was bring slightly more popcorn. Once all four were prepared, they warped to the execution grounds.
The rest of us were waiting in the living room, pondering when they'd come back. After about two hours did they warp back home. Lou, Amethyst and Cenza in better spirits. Amethyst was refreshed. Like she'd just come out of a grooming salon with the most prestigious treatment. As though she'd washed herself of the last dregs of years of filth that would not come off.
Cenza walked confidently, glowing with pride. The way she carried herself was a stark contrast from when we had first met her. She had destroyed and outlived the people that ruined her life, establishing why the Kalosians were right to put their faith in her all those months ago. And she was savoring that feeling.
Lou simply appeared satisfied. The garbage was disposed of and now the house will stop smelling type of satisfaction.
As for Mareeta… I could tell some part of her was glad it was over.
She was less tense than she was prior. But whatever relief she felt was easily overtaken by her misery. Pretty much as soon as they got back, she left for the backyard. Apparently she was just sitting by the cliff, looking over the ocean. She hadn't said a word the whole time, and she definitely wasn't starting now.
{All of Benedetto's forces have officially been wiped out,} Lou addressed everyone proudly.
{That man and any of his underlings will never bother anyone again,} Cenza added, looking up at Amethyst. {We're free of them.}
{Did you see Kakuen nearly shit himself when he saw us there? So high and mighty before, and now he looked almost glad I was just gonna be on the sidelines,} Amethyst snickered.
{He was unseemly, just like his former master before his punishment,} Lou huffed. {Only Ursula had some shred of dignity once I assured her her offspring would be well taken care of. Hopefully all the children of the Heterupts will grow up to be upstanding individuals unlike their parents.}
"Okay, so it sounds like everything went off without a hitch. That's good," I sighed with relief. "The Great Marsh is back to normal."
{Everyone can't wait to see you all again. They just need a few more days, but soon,} Cenza added.
{Yeah I missed all the dramatic farewells and the climatic finale, so a proper 'we did it' would be appreciated,} Donut hummed.
{Oh yeah, real quick,} Amethyst interjected, looking at Donut. {We good? No simmering resentment towards me for wiping the floor with furious George?}
Donut smiled softly. {We're good, Amethyst. We know each other better now.}
She smiled. {Just checkin'.}
{It doesn't really feel right to cheer for the deaths of our enemies… but I really didn't like Kakuen, so I'm gonna cheer a lil bit because of that,} Holyn affirmed. {Wooo…} he cheered quietly.
Amethyst floated over, rubbing his head. {You don't need to force yourself. Honestly you not being as ready to celebrate their timely demise would be good for Mareeta. She's been having it rough.}
{We have to wait for her to contact us. Once she's come to terms with what's happened,} Lou reminded me.
"Of course. As long as she needs."
{Are you alright, Zenara? Violet? You've both been quiet,} Cenza asked.
"I am alright," she confirmed before formulating her response. "I am glad the Marsh is at peace, though the required tactics were not my preferred ones. Instead I simply intended to wait until the topic of celebration turned to Zenara's awaited evolution."
Zenara grinned wide, looking at her. {Now's the time?}
Violet smiled at her. "We are all here, so yes, I believe so."
The wool around Zenara's neck began sparking excitedly as she ran over and picked up Donut. {I can pick you up now! I have hands!} She put him down before picking up Cenza and hugging her. {And I can hug you now! I'd hug Donut but I don't think he wants me to, but you like them!}
{Congratulations on your hands! I hope you pick up loads of things and people from now on!} Cenza cheered.
Zenara nodded happily before looking at Lou. {And I'ma pick up on more ways to fight people from Loulou! I'm still not gonna be able to beat ya anytime soon, but now I can block a lot better!}
{I've begun formulating new drills for us to perform ever since I saw your new form. We will hone our new evolutions to their peak performance!} Lou declared.
She smiled brightly at him before looking at me, Violet, Amethyst, Donut and Lou all together. Her smile dimmed, but not out of sadness. It just went from excitement to gratitude.
{And I wanted to thank you all. If you hadn't helped me out, who knows where I'd be. Not beating up bad guys to do something actually important, probably. And maybe it's gonna be hard or sad sometimes, and things are gonna be complicated. But I wouldn't wanna be anywhere else but with you guys.}
Violet leaned forward, and Zenara leaned into her arms for a hug. "I am proud to be a part of your growth, and hope to help you become your best self going forward. We will always be there for you."
{You know it,} Amethyst added, sitting on Zenara's head. {What else is family for? Especially a cool, bad guy bustin' family like ours.}
"And now we can help you aim for Ampharos and maybe one day mega evolution!" I suggested, hyping both of us up.
{And once you do I can fully commit to letting you fight all my battles as I chill in your wooly mane,} Donut pointed out.
Zenara laughed, looking over at him. {I totally would, but I don't think you'd want me to do all of them.}
{Hmmm… okay maybe save a few for me. If I'm in the mood,} Donut coyly suggested.
{Me too! We'll grow up to be titans on the battlefield. Nice ones though,} Holyn pointed out.
{And don't forget the tiniest titan of them all,} Cenza added, hopping onto Holyn's dome. {I'm a certified fighter now! Meowstic, Pangoro, Kakuen, they don't scare me anymore. I can hit hard just fine now!}
{And all of us can stand proud together!} Zenara looked up at Lou. {Well, Loulou can fly, which is even cooler, but you get it.}
{Even though I can fly, your hands are quite useful and… you are still so floofy. It lightens my heart to think of how much you've grown since you were a newborn lamb.} Lou closed his eyes reminiscing on such fond memories.
{Awww, Lou's getting nostalgic,} Donut teased.
{I'm also going to be honest. Mareep Zenara was much cuter than Pichu Donut,} Lou stated with a hint of cheekiness.
{Okay, let's not lie to everyone. Also this isn't fair, only you and Topaz knew me back then!} Donut protested.
{I like being floofy. It's fun.} She thought for a second and looked at me. {Wait, you were reading your Pokedex to me ages ago, didn't one entry say we're supposed to have rubbery skin instead of mini floof? Did they never try and touch one of us or something?}
"Many entries were written by incompetent fools at best," Violet spoke plainly. "Likely the same person who said Gardevoir can create black holes and Magcargo are as hot as the sun."
I knelt down to hold Zenara's hands, testing for rubbery or slight fluff. It was more rubbery than before I suppose beneath the wool and clearly pink, but there was still some softness to it. Rather than just skin, she was covered in a miniature, tightly coiled coat of wool. "Well… I suppose your account is different from the one in the dex. That just means we update it so other trainers and their Flaaffy can remain informed. It's no biggie, just adds more nuance to your species. You're unique!"
She grinned wide, putting her hands on her hips with bright eyes. {I already knew that one!}
{So where's the part where we eat cake and celebrate? The neverending stream of victory donuts has been nice, but come on now,} Donut pleaded.
{Do I gotta raid a fridge or a grocery store?} Amethyst asked, glancing at me.
I chuckled as I opened the freezer and revealed multiple different cakes. "Have faith in your human companions. Violet and I ordered multiple cakes ahead of time."
{D'awww, you spoil us,} Amethyst laughed while rubbing Violet's head. She just smiled in response, happy to be with her sister and Zenara. Little sister? They'd figure it out.
