The era of heroes is over, with the hero association almost extinct and espers now living in secrecy, the talented son of a legendary esper couple starts attending a school which is under the control of devils. Raised with the mentality that all demons and evil spirits are enemies and carrying an enormous power that is still unknown to most devils, how will he fit in this new life?

47. A new ally?

"T-this is absurd..."

I say glaring with angry eyes the small group in front of me

"Are you really expecting me to just buy all this bullshit?"

The first to answer me is the tall white haired woman of amazonian proportions

"Oi! Watch ya frickin' tongue! Why the hell would we lie to you about any of this? Didn't Tatseyo told you to trust us?"

"Diz, control yourself!" - The old man barges in, but I was already talking back to her

"Saving the world? Really? A truce between angels and devils?"

"What?! Are you not convinced? Tatseyo saw what happened, Aya-chan was a victim of them! Those guys are an actual threat to the balance of our world!"

I immediately shake my head

"To the balance of your world! We humans can take care of our own! If you wanna die you can go kill yourselves over there, but don't drag Tachan into this! Also, don't you call him by the first name like that! Who are you all to him anyway?"

At my question, the group goes silent. It seems that neither they fully understand the relation Tachan has with them

"What? No response? A bunch of espers turned devils by this hell-made tech! Why the hell does the Association not know about this already?! Once I get out of here I'll immedia-"

"You won't be doing anything."

An abrupt yet smooth interruption comes from the purple haired woman sitting opposite of me, she exudes a graceful yet powerful, they said her position was [Queen]. If all this crazy talk is true, then yeah, that's definitely the vibe she gives off and the fact that she's a telepath doesn't help. She's the only one here who really puts me on the edge.

"W-why wouldn't I?"

I ask, expecting to receive some sort of threat or an elaborate explanation, however, her response is cold and simple.

"Because that would put Tatseyo in danger."

It is my turn to go silent at her response as a chill runs down my body

"W-what are you talking about?"

I ask, however, deep down I already know the answer

The girl nonchalantly shrugs and answers with the same polite, yet firm tone

"Tatseyo has been working with us for a while now, he asked you to trust us and even went as far as lying to Lady Tatsumaki, Kageyama-san and the Esper Association itself. Do you believe that if you did warned the Association about this they wouldn't run an investigation and eventually find out Tatseyo's affiliation with us?"

Hearing her talk makes me clutch my hands and grit my teeth. Ughhh, she's right. She's definitely right. Even if I manage to get Tachan away from here, his ties with them already make him a target, but first of all, why the hell is he getting involved in this!?

"Y-you manipulated him! I don't know how but Tachan is different ever since he came to this town! Maybe that dark demon bimbo did something to him, maybe you all did! But this is not Tachan's fault!"

I retort desperately, right now my brain is racking for any reason as to why Tachan would be helping them.

"What the fuck did you just called Liliana-sama?!"

The white haired woman puts her fist forward as if she's about to leap through the room and jump me, however, this time the purple haired girl lifts her hand and a strong gust of wind is blown through the room

"Ughh!"

The amazon flinches and guards herself as if the wind was punching her, after the gust dies out, her purple haired partner stares back

"Diz-chan, I really appreciate your devotion to Liliana-sama, we all do, but right now your violent tendencies will lead to nowhere, please show some patience"

Being called out, she looks contrariated at first, but her face quickly gave place to a look of resignation as she clicked her tongue and pulled a chair

"Tsk... fine, I have no patience for this anyway"

The tall woman sits side-by-side with the blue haired girl who seemed to be absent from the conversation lost in her own world and the green haired youkai who so far seemed too nervous to say anything.

After the mood had settled, the old man directed his words to me

"I believe what Mayumi was trying to say was, Tatseyo called you here because he trusts you, he knows you won't do anything that can put him in danger, those were his words after all."

A feeling of embarassment runs through my body at his last words and I tense up for a moment

"W-w-what? D-did Tachan said this? W-with those words?"

I ask just to be sure the old man wasn't joking around

My eyes were focused on him, however, from my peripherical view I saw the purple haired girl show a mischievous smile

"Fufufufu, of course, I thought that would be obvious for you though? He specifically said 'Ayumu is the person I trust the most in this world, she's the only one I can do this with', I remember even I became impressed."

"Eh-ehhhhh?"

Feeling the blood rushing to my cheeks I cover my face with both hands in the hopes these people won't see it

Tachan you idiot! Fool! Dummy! Stupid! Why would you say something like that outloud in front of all these people?! I-it's not that I'm unhappy that you trust in me so much, b-but they might get the wrong idea!

When I manage to get myself back in control and finally look back at them, I see the old man and purple haired girl exchanging what seems like triumphant smiles

The white haired amazon in the back tosses her arms behind her head and says with an astonished expression

"Sometimes you two scare me more than Liliana-sama..."

The purple haired girl laughs a little at her friends dubious statement and addresses me again

"Besides... if Tatseyo trusts us, don't you think you should have a little more faith on him too?"

Her question stings me like a needle and I find myself holding myself on my chair to answer

"Listen here, I completely trust on Tach-"

*Knock Knock*

Before we can talk any further, a couple of knocks come from the door and we turn to watch as it opens and two familiar figures walk in, my eyes widdening when I see one of them

"Tachan!"

I rush towards the black haired boy whose face seems completely taken back when he sees me

"Ayumu! H-hey!"

My happiness at seeing Tachan looking well after the state he was in drives me to the point where I literally jump to hug him.

"A-are you alright?"

He asks me with a look of concern, but I shake my head

"I'm the one who should be asking you that! You just went down out of nowhere. Are you feeling okay now?"

I ask while looking for any signs of an injury in his body and occasionaly shooting a glance at the Liliana chick standing right behind him who has an annoying smile at her face. Tachan seemed to be out like a light back there, what did she do to him?

Tachan shakes his head

"Don't worry, Liliana did... something and I'm completely fine now"

So he says... Wait, why the hell did you hesitate when you were going to say "something"?!

"H-hey! What did you do to Tachan!?"

I ask looking at her, but all I get is a giggle and a finger on her own lips

"It's a secret~"

I feel the blood rushing to my head and my eyes wide as I look at Tachan as if pleading to get an answer from him

However, Tachan just sighs and scratches his cheek

"She won't tell me either, but Ayumu... Don't you think you are too... close?"

Tachan says and I become aware that I've been holding onto him this entire time!

"A-ah! Sorry!"

I let go out of him feeling my face beet red and I can swear I hear I feel giggles from my back

After this moment of embarassement, the dark skined girl steps forward and stands by Tachan's side

"So, Ayumu-chan, did my trusted servants helped you to get a feel of the situation at hand?"

I turn my eyes to look at the girl and feel my expression twist in anger for a moment

"Yes... so that's why Tachan was acting like that recently..."

Tachan's hand rests on my shoulder and he says in a apologetic tone

"I am so sorry, Ayumu... but I had to wait untill you were here to tell you this otherwise you wouldn't believe me."

"I'm still finding it hard to believe..."

I reply confused and Tachan gives me a worried look

"It's very strange, I know, but I really need your help with this"

I nod in return

"About that you are right, you do need my help"

Tachan's face seems to light up for a moment before I grab his wrist and start dragging him towards the door

"H-hey! What are you doing?!" - I feel Tachan pull himself back

"Helping you! I'm getting our asses out of here right now!"

"W-wait, Ayumu! You are not understan-"

"What is there to understand?!"

I turn to Tachan and lash out at him, his face freezes in shock

"If... if what they told me is true then, Tachan, you... have been working with devils?"

He hesistates for a moment before meekly nodding his head

"Y-yes, but it's for a good cause and they are good-"

"It doesn't matter! Lying to the Association? Have you ever stopped to think about what this could mean to mean to you what it could mean to... me?"

I start to feel tears gathering in my eyes as Tachan's face grows worried

"If this gets out, you could... this can't happen! I need you with me"

As my plead grows desperate, Tachan reaches out and takes my hand on his. He stays quiet for a moment before asking.

"Liliana, is it alright if I speak with Ayumu... alone?"

He says without taking his eyes off me, I turn to the silver haired girl and she seems surprised for a moment as her followers looks at her, expecting the answer.

The surprise quickly vanishes from her face after a brief moment and she nods with a serious expression

"No problem, you can go to the other room, take your time, Tatseyo"

Her servants turn to look each other nervously as I feel Tachan's hand on my shoulder and turn to look at him

"Thank you. Ayumu, please, let's talk over there."

He opens the door to the room where we had come from and urges me to follow him.

I stare at him blankly for a while, before gathering my energy and following after.

"Thanks"

I hear him say as he shuts the door behind us and we go to the other where I immediately turn to face him

"I don't get why you would hide this from me untill now! Did you thought I wasn't going to believe you?"

Tachan locks his eyes on me, he seems serious, but regretful.

"Of course not! That isn't the issue, I trust you wholeheartedly, that's why you are the only one I can trust with this!"

His answer takes me surprise, I remember what the purple girl said before about Tachan and I cover my face with a hand to hide my embarassment at the memory, ugh, but I'm still mad at him!

"If you had warned me sooner that you were doing something so dangerous I would have told you to stop right away!"

"That's why I couldn't tell you, because I know you care about me and would try to stop me"

"Then why are you doing this?! Liying to Lady Tasumaki, to Kageyama-san, doing something that could make you end up-"

I cut myself short before finishing the sentence, I know Tachan knows what will happen if they find out what he's doing, that's one of the reasons I'm so angry

But this time, instead of saddness, Tachan looks at me with determined eyes

"Ayumu... have they told you about the alliance?"

I stop for a moment trying to think about what Tachan is talking about before finally realizing what he meant

"Y-you mean the alliance between the three biblical factions? Angels, fallen angels and devils? Y-yeah, they told me this absurd in there, don't tell me you believed it?"

Tachan nods

"I not only believe in it, but I have evidence that it's true. In my new school."

"W-what?"

I say dumbfounded, he found something in Kuoh academy?

"H-how? What's going on there?"

Tachan brings a hand to his face

"I know it's going to be hard to process, but... the school is run, no, it's correct to say that it's entirely owned by devils and one of my teachers is a fallen angel himself."

I feel my eyes wide at his sudden and absurd answer

"W-what? N-n-no, that's impossible, Kuoh was recommended to Kageyaa-san and Lady Tatsumaki by-"

Tatseyo cuts me short while nodding his head

"Yes, I know, that's why it's even weirder, don't you think?"

I raise an eyebrow at him

"Weird? Everything about this situation is weird, but what exactly are you referring to?"

Tacham raises a finger and questions

"To begin with, the fact he suggested Kuoh Academy for my parents without any prior research? Or maybe that it seems no one in the esper community was aware of a truce between three of the most important factions of the supernatural world don't you think this was all rather convenient?"

I put my arms forward in a sign for him to slow down

"Woah, woah, hold up, what are you implying with that?"

He shakes his head

"I'm not implying anything... yet. But all of this is too convenient to be just a coincidence, don't you think?"

"What, do you think the Association was trying to get you associated with the devils?"

I say sarcastically and Tachan sighs

"No... but maybe they wanted me to kill them"

I go silent for a moment, taking in what he just said

"W-what did you said?"

He puts a hand in his forehead and speaks in an almost apologetical tone

"When I was in Kuoh... before this new alliance was explained to me, I tried to kill the inhumans who were in there."

I gulp down hard at his sudden revelation and stare wide eyed at Tachan

"Y-you exorcised someone there? Are you alright?"

However, he shakes his head

"No, I didn't got to exorcise them, just when I was about to Liliana stopped me. She then brought me here and explained it all to me just like we are doing with you."

He gives a sad smile and continues

"...If it wasn't for her, I would probably have done something really bad."

I feel a weird feeling rising from my stomach, so that girl stopped him before he could finish them off, that's why he's feeling so indebted to her?

"But so what if you killed them, they are just devils, right? No one would hold you f-"

"You don't get it, Ayumu, they are good people-"

"They are not people!"

I say, interrupting him loudly. Tachan freezes and stares at me with a scared expression, only then I realize that I just shouted at him

"I-I'm so sorry..."

I say, turning my face to the floor

"It's okay... I didn't thought you would jumpy about this..."

Uhh, hearing Tachan's saddened voice makes me feel like a monster! I'm so, so, so sorry!

"B-but if the Association wanted them killed like you said wouldn't they have just sent an squad and get this all over with instead of playing a game with you, one of it's most valuable members?"

At my answer, he sighs and puts a hand on his chin

"There is also anoter problem... you see, two of the devils at my school are related to two of the four Maous themselves."

I freeze at Tachan's words as my brain tries to process what he just said

"W-what? Related to the M-Maous? The real Maous? The leaders of the devils? Those Maous?"

I ask several times just to be sure, to which Tachan keeps nodding

"Yes, those very same Maous. That's why... I think the Association must have done something, maybe this is what they wanted from the start"

Still confused by what Tachan might be teorizing I furrow my eyebrows and cross my arms

"B-but what could they possibly gain from this? And why keep it a secret?"

Tachan throws me a sideway glance and says in a half-angered tone

"Wouldn't be the first time they use us as pawns would it?"

I think for a moment and can only sigh

"Y-you're right, but why you?"

My somewhat innocent question seems to have hit a spot as Tachan's face turns gloomy and he looks down at his hand

"I theorized with Liliana that this might have something to do with my skill... or the Awakening Protocol"

I wide my eyes at his statement, why is he bringing up that protocol now?

"Woah! The Awakening Protocol? Isn't that like just a theory? Not even your father could achieve a full awakening, not even Kusuo-san can control it"

He nods at my answer and lifts a finger

"You are right, but if there's one thing the Association wouldn't give up on is that. The possibilities of a full-controled Awakening are too great to just toss it aside, and the fact that the ones in the Academy are related to two of the Maous might have something to do with it. Isn't that one of the characteristics of an awakening? The power to kill a Maou? Do you trully think that's just a coincidence now?"

I gulp down and think hard for a moment, even if I'm not that smart, it really is weird how all this things are pilling up. Specially when we consider that Tachan's transference to Kuoh began with...

I stop for a moment and look wide-eyed at Tachan. How the hell did I forgot about this?!

[This one was branded "Highly classified" by the guy at the top himself]

That's what the woman that handed me the mission briefing said!

"What is it, Ayumu?

He asks me concerned and I point to him in a panick

"Y-you talked with the Chairman in order to get me here, didn't you?!"

I ask, perhaps louder than I intended due to my surprise

Tachan sighs and scratches the back of his head

"So you know... yes, of course you would"

He gives this troubled answer and I promptly scold him

"What do you mean with that? Of course I know! Wasn't I supposed to?!"

I start to feel mad thinking Tachan was trying to hide this from me, but he shakes his head right away

"No, no, sorry, I was even going to tell you if you didn't knew, I promise. It's just that since you already know, then I don't have to explain how I managed to get you here"

I stagger backwards in shock

S-so it's true, in the end this even worse than I thought!

"Do you realize what you've done?! This is... this is..."

I can't even come up with words to describe how screwed up is the situation Tachan got himself in, I just sigh and put a hand on my forehead

"Do they know about this?"

Tachan nods his head with a troubled face

"Yes and believe me when I say that they gave me an even harder time than you"

He shows an awkward smile

"But in the end I managed to convince them that this was the course of action I thought was the best"

I place my hands on my hips and groam in anger

"This was the best way? Really? Look, even if this is all true and there is some big conspirancy behind sending you here, what can we do about it? We would be standing on the way of the Association's desires by ourselves? And violate several of the Esper Code's laws by fighting an organization of devils and humans wanting to overthrow society's order? Do you think this is a good plan?"

I ask and Tachan gives me a sad look before sighing

"I know, it may sound ridiculous, you're obviously free to reject this and go away, I would never hold this against you. But I can't rely on anyone else but you, you are the only person from my life who is strong and trustworthy enough to have my back on this..."

I feel my face starting to blush

"And Ayumu... we won't be alone"

He tilts his neck at my confused expression, pointing with his head towards the door we came from

My blushing quickly turns into a sour expression as I understand what he's implying

"Really? Trusting you is one thing, but then..."

He nods his head

"I'm not expecting you to trust them for now, but can you trust in me? I'm telling you, Ayumu, we are on the same side here and we can accomplish something great, maybe this can be the first step towards a deeper understanding between inhumans and espers"

I sigh again at Tachan's speech

"You really thing we're going to make all of this come true just because two espers are now with a group of esper turned devils?"

Tachan nods his head

"Not just two espers, you and me. And I wouldn't wanna do this with anyone else."

!

Ugh, there he goes again, saying as he pleases. But if he's willing to put that much on the line, it's not like I have the option to just leave him here anyway.

"So, what do you say?"

Tachan asks, giving me an expectating look. I put my hand against my forehead, knowing fully well I can't say no to him now.

"Okay, fine! But those devils over there better prove they worth their weight in gold if they expect me to fight against humans for their sake!"

When I say this Tachan's face is taken over by a huge smile

"Yes! Thank you, Ayumu!"

He steps forward and leans in to hug me

"I know we can do this!"

"H-hey!"

His sudden display of affection takes me by surprise

"W-what, is there something wrong?"

He asks me confused while looking me in the eyes, I stare at him for a moment before answering

"You've almost never hugged on your own ever since we grew up, idiot..." - I reply quietly

He only does that when he's really excited, is it because of me... or did this Liliana changed him that much?

"Uh? What did you say?"

He asks as I only said it barely above a whisper, but I quickly dismiss it

"Mou, it's nothing! Anyway, we gotta talk to them to say we are in, right?"

I take him by the hand once again and lead him to the door from where we came in, once we open it, the many eyes from the ones who were waiting for us in the room turn to our direction.

The first one to step forward is Liliana, with a happy expression on her face

"If you are still here then does that mean..."

She turns from me to Tachan, who nods

"Yes, she'll help us!"

At his confirmation, the Liliana girl throws a party, lifting her hands in the air and jumping to hug me

"Yay! Thank you so much, Ayumu-chan!"

She puts her hands around my neck and pulls me close

"Oi, let me go!"

I put my hands and push her away, she still struggles a little, not wanting to let go

"Ahh, come on! I'm so happy to have Tatseyo's friend joining us!"

I keep pushing and finally manage to get her off me, damn, this girl sure is way too stronger than she looks! Though that's to be expected from a devil

"Just to be perfectly clear, I'm doing this for Tachan, not for you, nor to stop this "evil organization" of questionable existence you keep talking about."

I say this expecting a more harsh response, but everyone looks at me with either happy or neutral expressions, like they already expected me to say this.

"Ayumu, you don't need to-"

I lift a hand in a sign for him to stop

"I just want to make myself understand, Tachan, please let me do it"

He hesitates for a moment, but then backs off and allows me to continue

"Tachan told me you all know about what he's done. I suppose you know the risks he's exposed as well?"

Everyone in the room nods and the Liliana girl turns to look at him

"I was really surprised at first, but if Tatseyo is willing to risk himself like this for us, then it's all the more for me to appreciate him"

Her eyes turn warm for a moment and I look at Tachan and see that he's blushing slightly. UGH! I'm really starting to regret having said I'd help them!

"Hey, can you focus over here?!"

I call out, but she gives me another of those annoying smiles of her

"Oh, of course I appreciate you too, Ayumu-chan"

That's not the point!

"I-I wasn't talking about this! What I mean is... ugh..."

I give a quick cough to try and regain my composure, but it seems that I have completely lost my pose, as even the green haired dog girl is looking at me less scared now.

"The point is, Tachan is my friend, his safety is my priority. I might have sided with you and I may trust what Tachan says, but that doesn't mean I like you, so if it ever comes a situationwhere I have to choose between you or his safety, no matter if it's physical or any other way, I'll definitely side with him."

I state it in the most serious manner I can, to show I really mean it. Tachan doesn't say a word, not sure how to react. However, once again the reaction I receive from these devils is not what I expected.

"W-why are you... smiling?"

The dark skinned girl had a gentle smile and placed a hand on her cheek as she answered me

"I think me and my servants must feel relieved by that. You know, even if we trust Tatseyo, we couldn't be sure of what kind of person you were going to be just by his description alone. But someone who puts the safety of a friend in such high regard..."

Her smile gets broader and she puts a hand on my shoulder

"Someone like that can't possibly be a bad person"

Her words get me off guard and I stand idle just staring at her as she keeps talking

"It's reassuring to have you on our side, don't worry, we'll be sure not to become a burden for you, Ayumu-chan"

She smiles to me before turning to Tachan

"You really do have a wonderful friendship, isn't that right... Tachan~?"

The dark skinned girl puts a hand under his chin and gives an impish smile, making him blush even harder and my blood boil

"Hey! D-don't call him like that!"

I blurt out without thinking, causing both to look at me confused

"Oh, sorry, is there a problem with it?"

Liliana asks me tilting her head while Tachan simply stares at me just as confused

"E-err, n-no, it's just that..."

I find myself stumbling over my words as I try to find an explanation as to why hearing her use Tachan's nickname made me so... angry?

But before I can give an answer, the dark skinned girl shows an impish smile at me

"Oh... I see how it is then, fufufu"

"Uh?"

Tachan makes a confused face at her teasing expression and she winks at me

"Good luck~"

She comes closer and whispers to me

"W-what?!"

I exclamate as she turns her back and walks to one of the couches in the room, giggling all the way through

"What the hell just happened?"

Tachan asks, I yell with my face red

"D-don't ask me!"

I say averting my face from his

""Fufufufufu"

"Kakakaka"

I hear chuckles coming from the ones sitting in front of us, shit! Not them too!

Liliana opens her arms in the couch and points a finger up while giving a sly smile

"Well... since we are all here we might as..."

"Ugh...!"

I feel a burning sensation run through my body and disappear, making me stumble

"Ayumu?! What happened?" - Tachan grabs me and asks worried

I stare bewildered for a moment untill I realize what this feeling

"My seal... someone undid it...?"

I ask

"Y-your seal?"

He asks, but before he can continue, a sound starts coming from Tachan, interrupting

"Ah, sorry..."

He reaches for a pocket and fishes out his cellphone, seemingly surprised when he looks at the screen

"It's... Rias-senpai?"

Liliana also answers confused

"Uh? Rias? What could she want right now?"

Tachan shakes his head and answers

"H-how the hell did she even got my- oh, yeah, she rules the school..."

He says, answering his own question, but I'm still left confused by what they are talking

"Who is Rias?"

I ask and Tachan looks at me and nods

"Oh, yeah, sorry, she's my senpai at Kuoh, she's also the sister of one of the Maous I told you about"

I wide my eyes in surprise and step back

"She's the what?!"

I yell out, that's a huge thing!

"What does she want with you?"

Tachan shakes his head

"I don't know, we haven't spoken in a while... better pick it up"

He taps the screen and puts the phone on his ear

"R-Rias-senpai?"

I stop and hear a faint female voice coming from the other side, but I still can't quite make out what she's saying.

Also, another devil girl, huh? Great... Tachan really became popular huh?

I stare at him but he doesn't seem to notice as he keeps talking on the phone, his eyes go wide all of a sudden and he starts pleading with the caller

"Wow! Wow, calm down! What are you talking about? The Hakuryuukou and who?"

Everyone's attention is entirely focused on Tachan as he talks

"Wait, right now? Are you sure? But... okay, okay!"

He hangs up worried and directs his gaze at me

"Ayumu... before you fought with the Hakuryuukou were you caught up with the black nekomata and a magician girl as well?"

He asks me and I wide my eyes in surprise

That's right, I forgot to tell them that!

"You fought against Kuroka and Le Fay Pendragon?!"

Liliana stands up and asks me, I meekly nod my head

"Y-yes and I sealed the nekoshou because the magician girl said she would keep getting in the way if I tried to kill her and I'm not allowed to hurt magicians because of the Esper Code..."

Even though I'm violating several laws of the Esper Code right now simply by talking to these devils...

All those in the room show expressions between amazement and troubled feelings

"As expected of Tatseyo's friend... though this does put us in a tight situation..."

The girl with purple hair says

"Kekeke... what should we do I wonder"

The old man says

"What did Rias told you, Tatseyo?"

Liliana asks and Tachan looks at me

"Ayumu... I think we're going have to go back to Kuoh town sooner than expected"

Sometimes it may seem as if I'm referring to you as more than one person, but it's because I also publish my works in Wattpad and sometimes I get a question there too, so maybe that's the cause of the confusion?

About the Musashi technique, yes, I've been thinking the same thing too, maybe Manaki and other espers will incorporate this technique in future arcs, though I'm still not sure how.
