Two days later, Sun was so excited that he woke up before the alarm went off. He had missed seeing Chloe on Saturday, but today they could spend hours together! If Chloe wanted to, that is.
Sun slowly crept out from under the blanket. They hadn't stayed up quite as late last night, but Moon still needed his rest. He grabbed the clothes he had set out the night before and headed to the bathroom. He had decided on the Lost and Found outfit, since they were the nicest clothes he owned. When he was dressed, he looked in the mirror for the millionth time. It was still hard to believe that reflection was really his. Those pearly white teeth, bright blue eyes, and golden blond… hair. Something was terribly wrong with his hair.
"What do I do with my hair? It's out of control! I can't meet Chloe looking like this!"
He attempted to tame it with his comb, but to no avail. Next, he tried out some of Vanessa's hair products. She wouldn't mind if he used a little, right? Unfortunately, what Sun thought was a little was actually far too much, and he ended up looking like a greasy yellow rat. He should've paid more attention when Roxy had offered to share her beauty routine.
"This is a disaster! Maybe it would look better if I put it up?"
Sun found the hairband Ginger had given him, but he couldn't figure out how to use it, and only managed to get it stuck, a lost treasure sunk beneath golden waves. He was at the end of his rope when Vanessa came home. As soon as he heard her come in, he threw the bathroom door open and raced over to greet her.
"Vanessa, you're back! Can you-"
"Shhh!" She put her hand over his mouth. Maybe he had been a bit too loud. Fortunately, Moon was a heavy sleeper, and no sound came from Gregory's room, either.
"Sorry," Sun whispered. "Can you help me with my hair? I was trying to get ready, but I really messed it up."
"Uh, maybe. Let me see what I'm working with."
They moved into the bathroom, where there was more light, and she examined the tangled mess on his head.
"Yikes, how did this happen?"
"When I woke up, my hair didn't look quite right, so I tried to fix it, but everything I did made things worse," he whined.
"Don't worry, Sun, everybody has bad hair days now and then. I'll do my best. Here, start combing"
Sun combed the best he could, and Vanessa cleaned off her hairbrush so that it could be used as well. It was difficult forcing the plastic teeth and bristles through the firmly cemented strands, but after enough strokes (and some water), they separated. Once Sun's hair had reached a more manageable consistency, Vanessa helped him style it. As if by magic, they were able to get his hair looking good as new.
"Ok, I'm done."
"Thanks, Vanessa! You're a miracle worker!"
"No problem. But next time, please don't touch my stuff without asking."
"Sorry. I just wanted to look extra special today."
"Ah, first date jitters?"
"No! It's not a date." Sun glanced over to make sure Moon hadn't heard. He was still asleep.
"Right. First friendly coffee shop meeting jitters, then?"
"…A little."
"That explains why you're up so early. Need anything else?"
"Umm… maybe. I invited her because I wanted to see her again, but I have no idea what to actually do. Is there some kind of coffee activity I should learn? Do we need construction paper? Glitter glue? Crayons? No, grownups don't use crayons, they-"
"Just talk to her," Vanessa interrupted.
"That's it?"
"Pretty much."
"I can do that! What do women talk about? Outside the Pizzaplex, that is."
Vanessa chuckled. "That's something all guys have trouble with, magically-transformed animatronic or not."
Sun started to worry even more. If real humans couldn't figure it out, what chance did he have?
"Is it really that hard?"
"Only if you overthink it. What does she like?"
"I have no idea! Most of our conversations are made up of basic check-in questions."
"Well, you could ask about her hobbies, her family, anything really. You said she's a college student, right? Ask her about that."
"But I don't know anything about college! I haven't even been to regular school!"
"Then let her teach you. Trust me, people love talking about themselves."
"I guess I could try. Oh! Before I forget, may I please use your phone?"
"What for?"
"Calling, I guess. Chloe asked for my phone number yesterday, so I told her I don't have one, but I would ask you if I could use yours."
"Uhhhhh… sure. I'll write it down."
Vanessa grabbed a notepad and wrote down her number. She labeled it "Vanessa/Sam from Freddy's."
"That looks perfect!"
"Great. You hungry?"
Gregory was up in time for breakfast, but Moon was still asleep when Sun left. It was his first time going somewhere all by himself. He was practically alone all day at work, he would be fine now, right?
The bus ride wasn't as fun without someone to sit next to.
He got to the Faz-Pad at 8:55, a little early, but it was a million times better than being late. He sat down at one of the smaller tables and waited. That's what people did at restaurants, right? Would they get mad at him for not ordering first? But if he ordered now, it might get cold before she arrived, and that definitely wouldn't be good, so he opted to stare at the walls and space out.
After spending seven whole minutes lost in his own thoughts, Sun felt a tap on his shoulder. He looked up to see Chloe smiling at him.
"Chloe! Hi!"
He stood up to greet her. She was wearing a pale green dress with a flowing knee-length skirt, the kind that looked like it would twirl well. This was the first time Sun had seen her in a dress. He started putting his arms up for a hug, but something told him he shouldn't, so he opted for a handshake instead.
"Hi, Sam. Sorry, I didn't mean to startle you. I tried calling your name from over there, but I guess you didn't hear me."
"No, you're fine! I should have been paying more attention. It's great to see you again! You look wonderful!"
"Thanks, so do you. Uh, coffee?"
"Oh, yeah! I think you order over there."
They walked over to the counter together. No one else was in line, so Chloe got her Chica Chai right away. Then it was Sun's turn.
"Welcome to the Faz-Pad, what's your order?"
As he looked at the menu, Sun realized that coffee was a lot more expensive than he thought.
"Ummmm… I'll have a Freddy Fizzy Faz, please."
"That'll be $4.27."
"Thank you!"
Sun dug the cash out of his pocket and handed it to the cashier, then brought the soda back to the table.
"So, you're more of a soda guy than a coffee guy, huh?" asked Chloe.
"Actually, I'm more of a 'don't have the budget for coffee' guy."
Chloe giggled. It wasn't like the miserable, half-asleep chuckle from Friday night. It was real, genuine laughter. She was having fun already!
"We've all been there! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to make you feel like we had to come here."
"Oh no, you didn't do anything like that! I'm glad we came here! Now I don't have to worry about travel time when I need to go to work!"
"You have work today?"
"Today and everyday! But the daycare doesn't open until noon on Sundays. That's why I wanted to meet up today."
"But every other day, you have a twelve-hour shift?"
"Thirteen."
"Wow. That's a lot of hours."
"Is it?" Thirteen hours a day seemed like nothing compared to spending nearly his entire life here. But now that he was thinking about it, his shift took up over half of a day, even without the time it took to get ready and ride the bus to and from the Pizzaplex. And now that he had to sleep, most of his late-night free time was gone. Maybe it was a long time.
"For that kind of job, yeah."
"Huh, I guess it is. On the bright side, I might be able to afford a coffee soon."
"Heh, yeah."
They sat in silence for a couple of minutes.
"…I'm sorry, it's been a while since I've done something like this," he apologized. "I don't get out much."
"Neither do I," said Chloe, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "I guess we have that in common."
"Yeah."
More silence. What did Vanessa say again? Right! School.
"Sooo… what are you studying right now… in college?"
"I'm actually earning my bachelor's in Elementary Education right now."
"You're going to be a teacher?"
"If I can survive finals. With graduation coming up in May, I'm kinda struggle bussing right now."
"That sounds like a lot. Are you sure you have time to be here?"
"Believe me, I needed this. My brain is so fried, I couldn't study right now if I wanted to. And Carrie's really been… encouraging me to get out of her house more often."
"You live together?"
"Yeah. She lives so close to campus, it didn't make sense to pay for a dorm."
"You two must be pretty close, then."
"Yeah, we've been best friends ever since we were kids. We also have a brother, but he's down in New Mexico. We're all pretty close. I like having built-in friends. Do you have any siblings?"
"My brother, Gabe." Sun liked saying that. It sounded a lot nicer than "naptime mode" or "other voice in my head" or whatever. "You kind of met him Friday night."
"Oh, wait! The guy with the blue hair?"
"Yep! We're twins."
"Twins?"
"Yeah!"
"I guess you do look pretty similar. I don't know why I didn't notice it."
"It's probably the hair."
"Yeah, I think it's a mix of the hair and the voice, 'cause he doesn't sound exactly like you, either."
"He really doesn't. Never has."
"Huh. Are you close?"
"You could say we're inseparable!" He smiled before realizing that that joke didn't work so well anymore. "At least, I thought we were."
"What happened?"
"We just… have a lot going on right now."
"I'll say you do. Losing your entire house is a pretty big deal! I'm surprised you're handling it so well."
"It's been a little rough, but we're going to get through it. It helps that Vanessa and Gregory are such gracious hosts. I don't know what we would do without them."
"Ok, I remember you mentioning Vanessa, but who's Gregory?"
"Another friend."
"So, all four of you are living together?"
"Yes! Vanessa and Gregory have their own bedrooms, and we sleep on the couch."
"Both of you? Is it a hide-a-bed?"
"…No, it's a couch. A very comfortable couch."
"Oh."
Silence again.
"You must be pretty good friends for her to take you in like that. How long have you known her?"
"About a year. We met her here, actually. She's the night guard."
"The night guard? There's only one for this whole place?"
"Kind of? She's the only human night guard. The rest are S.T.A.F.F. bots."
"Ah. Wait, are you saying you met her here in the middle of the night?"
Yes, he had. They had met briefly during her patrols. That would make perfect sense for Sun, but Sam had only been working here for a week.
"No, of course not!" he laughed. "That would be… odd. I only mentioned that because she… has an employee discount!"
"That must be nice."
"Yes, it is great. That's how we met Gregory, too! She brought him here because they already knew each other, and she had that discount, so it was a lot more affordable, and we were also here. Visiting, I mean. We weren't just here, y'know, it's not like we live here or anything. That would be pretty… pretty unusual. Strange. Weird, some might say."
He needed to change the subject soon. He stuffed his hands into his pockets and found the note with Vanessa's number. Perfect.
"Speaking of Vanessa, I asked and she said it's alright if I use her phone. Here's her number, in case you ever wanted to call. Or text. It's completely fine if you don't, obviously, don't feel obligated to do that if you don't want to, but you asked the other night, so… here."
He handed her the note. She quickly copied the number into her phone, then put them both in her purse.
"Thanks! I sent a text so you'll have my number, too."
"I already have it, but thank you!"
"You do?"
"From your contact information in the daycare's database."
"Oh, right."
She paused to take a sip of her drink.
"So, how are things going at the daycare?" she continued.
"Fazeriffic as always! Some parents can be interesting to deal with, but it's great to see all the kids!"
"Yeah, Tommy loves that place. Carrie's been taking him there ever since he was old enough. I don't think she's ever left him with a regular babysitter. I can see why he likes it, though."
"Why is that?" Sun knew of many reasons why kids should like the daycare, but he wanted to hear an outsider's perspective.
"Come on, you've seen the place! It's a huge play area filled with toys and art supplies. That's only every kid's dream!" She ran her finger behind her ear, even though the strand of hair was still thoroughly tucked. "And, um… I hear the employees are pretty great, too."
"Oh." Sun's face was warm again. Gregory had ever so helpfully informed him that this meant he was blushing, so he leaned on the table and rested his face in his hands, covering his cheeks. "You don't say?"
"I came here, didn't I?"
"So, you weren't just looking for an excuse to get some Chica Chai?"
Chloe glanced down at her cup and grimaced. "Mm, no."
"Is it that bad?"
"It's alright, but it's not nearly worth the price. How's your drink?"
"I haven't tried it yet." They served Fizzy Faz in the cafeteria, but this smelled different. He took a sip and found out it tasted different, too. "Woah! That's a lot stronger than the kind from the cafeteria!"
"I guess they save the good stuff for paying customers." She giggled again. Adorable giggling must run in the family.
They talked for a little while about how cafeteria food was generally inferior to other kinds, then about Caroline's recovery (she was doing much better). Sun had a couple more close calls, but nothing that could lead to disaster. Eventually, Chloe checked her phone.
"Oh! It's later than I thought. We should probably wrap things up here. It's been great talking with you."
"Thanks! I had a lot of fun, too!"
She moved to the edge of her seat, then paused.
"Would you… want to do this again sometime?"
After all the awkward silence and overpriced drinks, she wanted to hang out a second time?! Maybe she wasn't as smart as he thought, or a million times nicer. Sun hoped it was the latter.
"Of course! Same time next week?"
"That works for me."
"Great! Is it ok if we don't come back here?"
"It's more than ok. Where do you wanna meet up?"
"I don't know exactly. Somewhere outside maybe? The weather is so beautiful, and I hardly see any of it."
"Sure. There are a bunch of parks around here. Have you ever been to Razor Ridge Park?"
"No, where's that? Could I walk from here?"
"Not really. Do you need me to pick you up?"
"That would be great!"
"Ok, I can do that."
They smiled at each other. Chloe's phone chimed, and she stood up to leave.
"Well, um… bye! See you next week!" She waved as she walked towards the door.
"Uh, y-yeah! See you then!" Sun waved back.
Next week. He was going to see her again next week. Less than seven days from right now, they would be strolling through a park, enjoying the fresh air and looking at all kinds of plants and animals. And, most importantly, they would be together again.
Sun would have to go to work soon, but for now, he was enjoying his time at the café. He and Moon had come here a few times to enjoy the music, but they had never seen it open. It was nice. Business had picked up enough that the smooth jazz was now overlayed with plenty of chatter. The barista yelling out orders, a woman asking about milk options, a man assuring his children they were going to the arcade very soon, the conversations of dozens of customers at their tables, sometimes punctuated by a burst of laughter. It was easy to see why people liked this place. He would have to bring his friends here, or at least Moon. When it was time, he took one last sip of his full-strength Fizzy Faz and headed off to the daycare.
