A/N: It's a late update but an update none the less. We're heading into Episode 14 and I don't know if you guys are noticing a trend but I'm basically ignoring the cases and sticking with the interpersonal stuff. I find it more fun. No one else minds right?

Chapter 455

Tani had shown up at the construction site with Koa in tow bright and early that morning.

She had been doing her best to keep the promise she made to her father to keep Koa on the straight and narrow. She had asked her coworkers if they had any leads on good honest jobs that she could get her baby brother on and had been told to speak to Adam about it.

Adam had come back a few hours later with a job opportunity with Chapel Construction Enterprises, they were putting together a house, and Koa had experience. Adam had talked with the owner and then given Tani a date and time to bring Koa down to start.

That day was today.

They had arrived precisely on time, Koa on the back of her vespa, to the stares from all the crew already there. Koa had intended to just hop off that vespa and leave her behind, but she wouldn't let him.

She had stopped him, simply to give him a pep talk, one that he pretended to not appreciate but deep down did and a little bit to remind him that he was lucky to get this opportunity. So he better not mess it up.

When she was certain that he had gotten the message, together they walked up and into the half-constructed house.

They didn't have to go far in to find Adam.

"Good morning," he said warmly to Tani before moving over to Koa. He offered him a casual handshake paired with a: "Hey, how's it going?"

Koa returned that handshake while politely responding: "Good, you?"

Adam gave him a brief: "Good," before turned to the middle aged native-looking man in the hardhat coming towards them "Koa, this is Eli. He's the boss around here."

He too shook Koa's hand. "Hey, good to have you. Adam tells me you've worked on some remodels."

"Yeah, I lay tie, hung dry wall, stuff like that."

Eli nodded solemnly. "Okay, well, good, let's get you set up. Follow me."

Koa shot one last glance at Tani before following Eli. Adam was sure to point at him and say: "I'll, uh, swing by later. We'll grab lunch, okay?"

Koa nodded, Tani called out one last "bye!" to her baby brother and then she following Adam out of the house.

"Seriously, thank you so much," she said to him for probably the millionth time.

"Hey it's no trouble. It wasn't me who did it anyway, Ro's the one who got final say."

"Wait… Ro? As in McGarrett's wife?"

"Yeah, she owns half the company," Adam said. Together they were walking out of the house and towards where their vehicles were waiting. "She uh… she owns half of lots of companies on the island actually, she likes to invest. Eli was introduced to her through me, so he owed me one, but even then, he wouldn't take Koa on until I talked to Ro. Luckily they were both at the same place when I asked…"

"They were?"

"Yeah, Eli's doing the extension on the McGarrett house."

"Oh… and… was it really hard to get her to agree?"

"Well… I'd like to say no, but she wasn't to please with the idea. But she did eventually agree."

"Yeah, that sounds typical."

"It's uh… been mentioned but I can see that she doesn't quite like you much."

Tani found herself frowning. "No, no she does not."

"That's really not like her," Adam said. "Do you have any idea why she's mad?"

"She doesn't like that I'm dating her brother."

Adam seemed to take that in. "She is rather protective of her brothers," he mused. "The only reason I'm asking is because I know she doesn't do stuff like this for no reason. The last time she was even remotely like this it was Amber… well you'd know her as Melissa…"

"Danny's girlfriend?"

"Mhmm. Rowan was distant… kept getting her name wrong. But it was because Melissa wasn't being truthful about who she was and her past."

Tani turned to him surprised.

"It's a long story," he said. "I wouldn't recommend asking Danny or Steve bout it, Steve doesn't react well and Danny… well he tells it well but I'm pretty sure he's also embellishing it. It's just not a safe conversation topic around Steve."

"And how would she have even known that Melissa was lying? The app?"

"Sanctuary was in its beginning phases back then. No, Rowan knew because she…"

"No, don't tell me you think she's psychic too."

"Well…"

Tani rolled her eyes. She really couldn't believe that Rowan had managed to convince all of these logical men in her life that she was psychic.

She also didn't know how to explain to Adam Rowan's consistent annoyance with her. She couldn't really tell him that she felt like Rowan was jealous of her. Everyone would think she was crazy.

But she couldn't shake the feeling that the two siblings were a little too close and maybe the real reason was that Rowan didn't like that Tani was taking way Con's attention?

"Well, I guess it doesn't matter until Ro decides it does. Either way, my recommendation worked, and Ro was kind enough to give Eli the extra funds to hire Koa on, just so long as he wasn't working on her extension."

Tani nodded. "Well, thanks again, you really are the best."

If he noticed that she gave no mention of attempting to thank Rowan he didn't say so.

"Happy to help. Hey, I got to run… work," he said making a bee line for his car.

Adam had just been brought onto the team. They didn't see him much because he was doing his own thing as the only officer in the newly formed Organized Crime Branch of Five-0.

"Hey, how's that going?"

"I still got Hideki in play," he said softly. Hideki was a mob boss on the island. Not a new one either, one that knew Fat, had worked with Fat, and yet was still alive. It was pretty obvious why. But he wasn't exactly the most trusting right now. "I'm thinking he's my best bet to finding our mystery player is."

"Look at you, you're like Eliot Ness."

"Yeah, except I don't know who my Al Capone is supposed to be."

Well she believed in him. Though she wasn't sure she believed he'd be able to find this guy before Con and Wo did. She just hoped that he would.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

"I don't even care that you're wrong. People make mistakes all the time. You made a mistake." Danny cried.

This had not been a good morning. Which was now compounded with the arguing and the fact that he couldn't get Wo Fat to answer his fucking phone.

Steve huffed again. "Dude, this is on you."

But Dany wasn't listening, he simply continued. "It's the fact that you can't admit to it."

This. Is. On. You," Steve said more forcefully. He put the phone back to his ear, listened to it ring and when he got the voice mail again he almost swore. "You kidding me?"

"You can't just say: I made a mistake."

"What are you talking about?" he cried as he dialed Wo's number again. "I'm the first person to admit when I'm wrong."

"You're not the first person to admit anything!"

"Shut up!" Steve snapped. "As soon as I get a hold of him everything will be fine but for the love of god, shut up."

"Shut up. Don't tell me to shut up. What's Wo going to do for us anyway, he's not even on the island."

"The man is a crime boss! He knows everyone on the island…."

"No correction… he did, until you rounded up everyone and got them killed in what was the worse operation you ever came up with."

Steve shot Danny a dark glare just as Wo picked up the phone. He put him on speaker immediately.

"Okay, you just called me ten times rapid fire while I was in the shower. I really sincerely hope that if this is any kind of emergency you called Con because I don't know what I can do from fucking Nevada…"

"We got robbed!" Steve snapped cutting off Wo Fat's tirade.

For a minute he was quiet and then said: "You called me about a robbery?" his voice was low and dangerous and it was clear that he was not amused and through grit teeth he asked: "Did anyone get hurt?"

"No it wasn't…"

"No? Okay, then… what did they get?" clearly the anger and worry had left him because he moved right on to be sassy with him "I'm assuming not Rowan, cause she can just get out of it… uh Nahele? No, I'd have gotten a call from Ro. What was it? Money? Your truck? Oh! Not Rowan's car? If it's your Marquis I say we thank them…"

"Wo!" Steve growled but the man kept going.

"No? Fine. I mean it's a piece of junk but she says it has sentimental value. I never really got that, but then Rowan bought me a bracelet with a little hand charm thing for protection and I don't take it off. Well I didn't, it's getting worn and I didn't want it to break so now I keep it in my pocket. I'd say it's more valuable to me than my Rolex, which is ridiculous because my Rolex is worth like… a thousand of these bracelets…"

"Wo," he growled again but still the man wasn't listening.

"Okay so not the Marquis, did someone steal evidence? A body? Your gun and badge?"

"No! Wo would you listen?" he cried and the man went quiet. "This happened at the restaurant… Danny didn't lock the restaurant…"

"That's fake news, okay?" Danny interrupted.

"Danny forgot to lock the shop…" "—that is not what happened. That is an alternative fact."

"Do you know what's crazy to me? It's crazy that they let someone as careless as you carry a firearm. That's what's nuts"

"Who's they? You hired me, you putz. The state has nothing to do with it. You hired me."

"Well that was a lapse in my judgement."

"Gentlemen!" Wo had to shout. Both Steve and Danny fell quiet and when he was sure they were done he continued. "Right, both of you separate before you go at one another, then take a few deep breaths."

He waited a couple of minutes for the two of them to calm down before moving forward. "Right, well it sounds like you two are… uh… having an emotional morning and while I'd love to listen to you two bicker all morning, I do have better things to do… like my job. So. So far all I've gotten is that you've been robbed and… someone… didn't lock your restaurant up?"

Both Danny and Steve went to explain, to blame one another again and Wo Fat had to shout at them to stop.

"We're not playing the blame game. Answer the question."

"Yes the restaurant got robbed…"

"It's not even open, you have nothing of value to steal…"

"It's our tools," Danny said. "They left him, obviously, but… yeah… the tools."

For a moment Wo Fat was silent and then he said: "…tools?"

"Yes. Sander, nail gun…"

"We had a whole bunch of stuff. We had a drop saw. We had a hammer drill. Just… a whole bunch of stuff," Steve finished for Danny.

"I'm sorry… you're calling me… about power tools?"

"I am."

"What the hell do you think I am, McGarrett? Your own personal PI? I'm in fucking Nevada right now, how the hell am I supposed to…"

"Well I just thought… you know… with you being… you know… you…"

"Me? Me being a Crime Boss, is that it?" he asked.

"I was thinking it more because you're a psychopath," Danny said with a shrug and Steve heard the low growl even though Wo probably moved the phone away from his face for that.

"Firstly, I'm a sociopath. A very high functioning sociopath. Secondly, I have no more connections on the island. You got them all killed…. Remember?!"

"Well either way, I figured. Sociopath. Criminal. You could help fix his mistake," Danny clarified.

"You said you were gonna lock the restaurant, you didn't lock the restaurant," Steve groaned.

"Why would I lock it?" Danny cried. "Steve, you were here. You said you were gonna stay here and stay in the bar till nine o'clock at night."

"Even if I wanted to lock this restaurant, you are the keeper of the keys. Are you not? We made a big deal about it. You made me sign the thing. How, how could I… you're the key guy."

They were getting frustrated again, but Danny was the first to calm down. Offering a hand out and calmly saying: "Okay. Okay, the keys."

"Yeah, the keys."

"Let's talk about those keys."

"Good, let's talk about it."

"Those keys are on a ring, and also on that ring is a fob. A little fob that belongs to a car that I own that you drive all the time that was in your pocket."

"I didn't have any pockets. Last night I was wearing pants with no pockets," Steve said. "How do I have keys in a pocket with pants with no pockets"

"Lieutenant Cargo pants, when do you not have pockets? What were you wearing Rowan's maternity jeans, cause that's the only way you'd fit into her jeans."

"I am not always waring cargo pants. Rowan hates my cargo pants. I try not to wear them that much."

"You wore cargo pants last night."

"No, I didn't."

"You sleep in cargo pants."

"No, I don't. I sleep in pajamas, okay?" he took a deep breath and turned back to the phone in his hands. "Okay. Wo. No pressure. But this is the most important favour I have ever asked you for. Like I'm willing to consider that all is forgiven for the Year of Deceit if you just find these tools. Cause if you don't get our stuff back I'm gonna have to listen to this revisionist history for the next three months."

"Okay… or you guys could just file an insurance claim, buy new tools and avoid the headache?" Wo offered softly.

"Well… yeah, that's gonna be a problem cause we don't have insurance, cause he thought it would be too early to get insurance," Danny said and Steve found himself wincing again.

"It was a calculated risk."

Wo seemed confused. "Ro doesn't go into business with people without insurance. It's the first thing she makes them get…"

"Ro's not a part of the business, it's just us," Steve said.

"Well… that's unfortunate," Wo murmured. Eventually cleared his throat and said: "Alright, here's what you do. Call your wife…"

"I don't want to call Ro."

"Well you're going to have to because she has the fucking strings," Wo snapped. "Call your wife. Tell her what happened. Have her track the strings, and when she knows who did it have her call me. I'll send someone to deal with it."

"Do you mean Con? Cause as you just mentioned everyone else is dead," Danny said and Wo Fat growled again this time loud and clear.

"I can't believe this is my morning. What did I do to deserve this?" he muttered. Probably to himself

Steve wanted to tell him it was the life of crime but he wasn't sure Wo would like that.

At that moment they heard the door open again and someone came through the plastic sheet they were using as a door to keep the debris particles in the main renovation area.

Danny looked startled, but Steve wasn't, only because he could sense who it was.

Rowan waddled mostly towards Steve a smile on her face.

Danny tried to intercept her though, "Your wife is here, look at that. HI. Hi Rowan. Answer a question for me."

"What are you doing here? Babe, what…" he pushed Danny away from her and kissed her quickly. "… what are you doing here?"

"I felt a disturbance in the force and thought I'd check up on you and bring you some donuts to go with your coffee… what happened here?"

They all might have said something about Rowan not having donuts with her. But she was pregnant and they had all stopped commenting on her eating habits at this point. Only cause the last time it was brought up she had dropped the offending person into a portal and out into the ocean behind the McGarrett house.

Con still hadn't forgiven her for it.

"Hi, yeah, Rowan, what does he sleep in?"

Rowan blinked her eyes at Danny, and then narrowed them. "Usually just boxers, sometimes he wears a shirt, depends on how hot he is, why?"

"See Pajamas, not cargo pants."

Danny ignored him, his eyes staying on Rowan "Does this man not always have cargo pants on?"

Rowan seemed so confused. "I… I mean…"

"Rowan! Do you or do you not bitch all the time about his stupid fucking cargo pants."

"Why the fuck is he talking to her like that?" Con cried coming in, box of donuts in his hands. His eyes turned to Steve. "And why are you letting him?"

Steve smiled widely, putting his phone closer to his mouth he cried: "Con just walked in, tell him to find my tools."

Steve pointed the phone towards Con who was now staring at it with confusion in his eyes. "What exactly is going on?"

"Someone broke into the restaurant and stole their tools he is asking us to find them," Wo said from the phone as Danny took the box of donuts from Con.

He sighed heavily, threw his head back to the ceiling and muttered: "I'd rather jump in the ocean."

"I know it's not ideal but he's willing to forgo all other favours and forgive us for the Year of Deceit if you do this."

Con seemed to think it over. "Tempting, but no. I have enough on my plate."

Steve frowned, was ready to argue his case when Pua appeared through the same plastic sheet they were using as a door that Rowan and Con did.

"Pua great!" Danny said. "Thank god you're here!"

"Yeah… Duke says you asked for me by name," Pua said.

Steve glared at Danny. "You were his idea, talk to him."

"Do you still need me?" Wo asked and Steve took him off speaker and put the phone to his hand.

"I guess not. Thanks for listening… and uh… sorry for freaking you out," Steve said before he hung up the phone. Which meant he caught the tail end of what Danny was saying to Pua.

"Well, I just thought since you were a psychopath over that Christmas Tree I stole. That you hunted it down, that you'd be able to help us with his…"

"I swear to god don't you call it my mistake again!"

"The point is, you can help us find the tools that got stolen sometime last night."

Con, who had put the donuts down by that point, clapped his hands. "Good. You've got the cop, now I don't have to. Good-bye. Come on Ro, before he ropes us into something else."

Rowan pressed another kiss to Steve's lips before letting Con drag her away.

Steve went to help himself to a donut as Danny explained the situation to Pua. He couldn't wait to get these tools back, if only to get Danny to shut up.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Pua's first stop in his quest to find the missing power tools was to go and talk to Kamekona. He had a pulse on the criminal underworld, he'd be able to point Pua in the right direction.

"My hunch is whoever stole Commander McGarrett and Detective Williams' tools most likely fenced them."

He had already explained the situation to him, he just needed to see if Kamekona thought the same and if he could help him

"And I have a hunch that your hunch is correct," Kamekona said.

"Okay… so do you know any pawnshops that take in hot merch?"

Kamekona thought about it a moment before saying: "I might know of a few that don't ask questions about an item's provenance. I'll go write some names down while you go get something to eat."

"I'm good thanks."

"No. I think you should go get something to eat."

"I'm good. I had a big breakfast, plus I'm trying to keep the weight off."

At that Kamekona chuckled at him. Like him trying to lose weight was funny.

"You really don't know how this works, do you?" Pua cocked an eyebrow at him. Well at least he wasn't laughing at his weight loss goals, just that he thought he was dumb. "Quid Pro Quo, brotha. That's Latin for, buy some shrimp, get some names."

Oh. Now he got it.

"Ah. I think I am hungry," Pau said carefully eyeing the menu.

"Thought so."

"Uh, I'll take the, uh, Kahuku shrimp special."

"Good choice. What else?"

More? He had to buy more?

"The Tacos?" he asked, almost hesitantly. God let that be all he needed to get, he was going to set his wallet and his weight loss journey back so far at this rate.

"Very tasty. And?

Pua sighed, wondering how much would be enough until a cry came from behind him.

"Oy!" Pua turned to find one of Rowan's older brothers sitting at a table, a plate of shrimp and rice in front of him. "Stop extorting the boy, he's ordered enough, give him what he wants."

Kamekona nodded. "I'll go get those names, you pay the nice lady and then wait at the tables," he said to Pua.

Pua thanked him, paid for his two things before heading towards the table that Rowan's older brother was sitting at.

"Thanks for that but uh… I thought you were off the case," Pua said to him.

"Yeah and then my sister put me back on it," he said around a mouthful of rice and shrimp.

"He uh… he make you order too?"

"Yeah, it's expected. But if you don't negotiate, or tell him to stop, he'll walk all over you."

Yeah, except this guy was much scarier than Pua clearly.

"Well, since we're on the same case, we might as well work together…"

"Yeah, don't think that's a good idea," he said. "You know, on account of me being… on the other side of the law."

"You could work on my side for once."

"Yeah, don't really want to," he said shoveling another mouthful of rice into his mouth. "Too many rules."

Pua sat down at the table to wait for the food.

"I'm Pua by the way," he said offering him a hand to shake.

He had to wait for him to put his fork down to accept the hand. "You can call me Con. Don't tell McGarrett, cause I made him earn it, but honestly it's just easier."

"Good to know," he said. After a moment of silence he said: "We'll probably end up at the same place…"

Con carefully laid his fork down and frowned. "Okay. Look. I don't like going about things the legal way. It makes things harder for me. But if you really aren't gonna stop bugging me about this. I will agree to go with you."

"Really… great…"

"I have conditions," Con said and now it was Pua's turn to frown. "I'm down to let you do your good cop routine but if it doesn't work, I'm going to step in and I'm going to need you to let me."

"I can't let you kill someone in front of me."

"Whoa, I'd never kill someone in front of a cop," he said. "But I might threaten them, maybe rough them up. So if that's something you can't deal with, you can either leave or we can work separately."

For a moment Pua mulled over the offer. It must have been a beat too long because Con offered him hand.

"Do we have a deal?"

Pau sighed but eventually took the offered hand.

He just had to hope that this worked out. Maybe he'd make a new friend out of this.
