"Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to see me Principal Stevens."
Eddie sat down in the principal's office at Middle School 227. She let out a breath she'd been holding and looked straight at Principal Stevens as she spoke behind her desk.
"It's a pleasure to see you Mrs. Reagan. I'm sorry it's under these circumstances. Cora is a good student. She stays out of trouble. Until recently. A few of the more popular girls have started calling her names. As far as I know, she's not friend with any of them."
Eddie felt her blood begin to boil, but she had to keep her temper in check.
"That's not the reason I came in today. I came in today because my daughter was almost choked to death by another student in the girl's bathroom. Has that student been expelled?"
Principal Stevens folded her hands over the top of her desk and looked at Eddie seriously.
"The student in question that assaulted Cora has behavioral issues that are being attended to."
Eddie took another breath and closed her eyes for a moment. She needed to collect her thoughts before she formed her next answer. Opening her eyes, she gave her answer to Principal Stevens.
"Has the girl that assaulted my daughter been expelled? Also, I want the names of the girls that are calling her names. All of them."
Principal Stevens frowned and shook her head.
"The student in question has been expelled. However, I cannot give you the names of the other students that have been bullying Cora. Confidentiality. They've been given detention for the next two months."
Eddie felt her jaw drop.
"Is giving those girls detention really the right course of action?"
Principal Steven stood from behind her desk and looked at Eddie.
"It should be sufficient. Deter them from causing trouble. I thank you for stopping in today. Enjoy the rest of your day."
Eddie stood and closed her mouth and mentally threw daggers with her eyes.
"You as well."
"Nice and easy breaths Nora. Good. You're doing great. Ok Nora, let me just get a quick look here, see if your baby is ready to greet the world. Mara, Sabrina, can you get her legs please?"
Mara and Sabrina followed exactly what Jamie said to do. He continued his conversation with Nora.
"Ok Nora, I want you to take a deep breath. Deep breath. Good. Keep breathing."
Jamie furrowed his eyebrows and frowned behind his mask.
"I should be feeling a head but I'm feeling a foot. Nora, I need you to relax and don't push, ok? Your baby is breech."
Nora got a terrified look on her face.
"My baby is upside down. Can't you turn them around?"
Jamie shook his head and did his best to calmly reassure her.
"Unfortunately, the way the baby is positioned I am unable to do that. Once we get to the OR I will have your baby out in less than two minutes. Everything will be just fine."
Nora was scared but trusted Jamie.
"Thank you, Doctor Reagan."
Jamie nodded and pulled the sheet back over Nora while Mara and Sabrina helped her put her legs on the bed and rolled her onto her left side. Mara and Sabrina rolled Nora into the operating room while Jamie went to scrub. As he was scrubbing, he felt his phone begin to vibrate in his scrub pants pocket. Ignoring it, he kept scrubbing all the way up to his elbows. Quickly rinsing his elbows, forearms and hands, he used his back to open the doors to the OR. He made light conversation with Nora.
"How are you doing in here Nora? Are you comfortable?"
Nora looked towards Jamie sleepily.
"It doesn't hurt anymore."
Jamie nodded and took his place behind the barrier separating the top half of Nora from her stomach. Not matter how many C-sections he'd done over the years, sometimes doubt crept in. But he wasn't going to let it lead him down a path of fear. He was a professional. A professional with a compassionate heart. Taking a deep breath, he let it out slowly as Mara handed him a scalpel.
"10 blade for you doctor."
Again nodding, Jamie reigned in his doubts and made the first incision. Swallowing, he concentrated on what he was doing and then Mara and Sabrina jumped right in to assist him.
"Ok, almost through. Sabrina, Mara, I need you two to pull please. There we go. Looks like we have a healthy little girl! Here's your daughter mom!"
Jamie held up the wet and screaming baby over the barrier so that Nora could see. She smiled tiredly at the little girl.
"Hi baby girl. I'm your mommy. Your name is going to be Mara. Your middle name is going to be Sabrina. I'm naming you after the two wonderful nurses that took care of us."
Nora tried to wipe her tears away, but found it was difficult to move. She was sleepy. Her husband Robert kissed her forehead and smiled through his tears.
"You did it honey. Look at that beautiful baby girl!"
Jamie beamed behind his mask. This was the 99 percent joy he felt every day. He never got tired of it. He'd take this pure joy every day of his life over the tragedy out there. Mara handed Robert a pair of scissors to cut the umbilical cord and he had tears running down his cheeks. Jamie and Sabrina continued with the task at hand.
"Sabrina, I need more lap pads over here. There we go."
Nora smiled tiredly again at Robert.
"Go with Mara honey. Make sure she gets settled. I'll be fine. Doctor Reagan is taking very good care of me."
Robert obliged and followed Sabrina out of the operating room with baby Mara in tow. He couldn't believe he had a daughter. He gave an apprehensive look to his wife but went out the door of the OR with their daughter to get her settled. Nora blinked; she could hardly keep her eyes open. Jamie kept the frown on his face.
"I need more lap pads Mara. I can't see what I'm doing here. It's very boggy. Almost like something went off in here. I don't want to have to pack it off. I'll need another four units of B- blood from the blood bank. Someone please go and get it."
He looked to Sabrina who was helping him suction. She was having trouble keeping up. Jamie knew he had to get Nora stable so that she could see and hold her daughter. He wasn't giving up on her. Not now. Not ever.
Jamie sighed as he walked in the front door of their Bay Ridge home. He quietly hung up his coat on the coat rack and closed the front door. He wasn't expecting Cora to be sleeping on the couch. Kneeling down next to the couch, he could see in the pale light of the lamp on the table, that Cora had been crying again. Her tear tracks were drying. He carefully placed a kiss to her forehead. She was startled awake.
"Daddy?"
Jamie nodded and ran a hand through her dark curls.
"What are you doing down here ladybug. You should be in your bed. Something wrong?"
Cora shook her head and carefully got up from the couch.
"It's nothing daddy. Goodnight."
Cora quietly went up the stairs, leaving Jamie kneeling in front of an empty couch. Jamie hung his head and shook it.
"Goodnight baby girl. I know when you're ready, you'll talk to me."
