It was almost Millie and Moxxie's anniversary, the most special day of their lives. Wraith, being skilled at painting, offered to recreate their wedding picture on a canvas as a present. The two eagerly accepted and gave them a picture of them in their wedding gowns kissing while Millie held some flowers. Later in the week, Wraith gave them a call and told the two to meet them at Wraith's apartment. Once they got there, Moxxie knocked on their door, which Wraith soon answered.
"Oh good, you're here!" Wraith said.
"You wanted to see us?" Moxxie said.
"Follow me." Wraith led the couple through the main room and into a door in the back. Inside this room were shelves of paint buckets and rolled-up paper against the walls. In the center of the room was a canvas on an easel. On this canvas was a painted copy of the wedding picture they gave to Wraith.
"Wow, this looks amazing!" Moxxie said.
"Yeah, it's so pretty!" Millie said.
"I'm glad you like it." Wraith said. "But…"
"But what?" Moxxie said, noticing the frown on Wraith's face.
"I-I don't know. I really wanted to paint you guys something special for your anniversary, but this… this doesn't feel like it."
"What do ya mean?" Millie asked.
"When I painted this, I wanted to express the heartwarming feeling I have whenever I see you loving one another. With this painting, I didn't have that feeling. It felt like I was just going through the motions."
"I know how ya feel." Millie said. "I'm like that with my writings."
"Which is why I brought you here. Would it be ok if you two could be my muses?"
"You mean model for your painting?" Moxxie asked. Wraith nodded in reply.
"Hell yeah, we'll do it!" Millie said. "Being a paintin' model sounds excitin'! Are we gonna get nude!?"
"Absolutely not." Wraith said. "While I'd be more than happy to paint tasteful nudity of you two, for your anniversary I want to capture true love. Nothing erotic, just you two showing how important you are to each other."
"Spoken like a true artist." Moxxie said. "Alright, let's do it."
Wraith smiled. "Thank you, guys."
Without hesitation, Millie and Moxxie walked toward the empty space behind the canvas before Wraith swapped it out for a blank one. They then pulled up a chair in front of the easel and picked up a paint palette and a brush on the table next to it. "Is there anything specific you want us to do?" Moxxie asked.
"Just do something cute together." Wraith said as they sat down, holding the palette in their robotic right arm and the brush in their left. Millie took the initiative and hugged Moxxie from behind, wrapping her arms around his neck and nuzzling her cheek against his. Moxxie couldn't help but smile and hold her hand as he looked at her.
Seeing the pose, Wraith began painting away, their eye focused on the canvas. For the next 20 minutes, the room was quiet as Wraith concentrated on their work, their eyes occasionally looking up at the couple before going back to the canvas. Eventually they stopped painting and began looking at their work with disappointment.
"Is something wrong?" Moxxie asked.
"I'm not feeling it with this one." Wraith replied. "It's not you guys, it's just-"
"It's ok." Millie said. "We can do somethin' else for the paintin'."
Wraith smiled, "Thanks, you two."
Once Wraith got a new canvas, Millie picked up Moxxie and carried him bridal style, both of them giggling as she did. "How's this?" Millie asked.
"Classic, we'll see how this works." Once again, Wraith painted away, the only places they looked were toward the canvas and Millie and Moxxie. They didn't even look at the palette when dipping the brush in whatever paint they needed, having been doing this in their free time so much that they had this down to muscle memory.
But once again, after 20 minutes, they pulled away their brush and had the same look on their face.
"Not feeling it?" Moxxie said.
Wraith shook their head. "I'm sorry."
"No worries!" Millie said. "We'll keep changing till you get somethin'!"
But they never did, for several hours M kept changing poses only for Wraith to throw the idea away because it didn't feel right to them. It got so bad that canvases began piling up next to Wraith. The last pose was Millie and Moxxie sitting on a couch they pulled in from the living room, the latter holding his guitar and pretending to sing her a song. Their faces were smiling, but at this point they were tired and wanted to get this over with, not expecting to be here this long.
As Wraith was painting, they stopped once again, their lips pursing. Just then, they threw their brush and palette on the ground. "SATAN FUCKING DAMMIT!" Wraith shouted as they punched a hole through their canvas with their robotic arm. M were obviously shocked at their outburst as the two saw them sit down in the corner.
"I'm sorry, guys." Wraith said. "Just head home, I have nothing."
Millie and Moxxie looked at each other with concern before approaching their friend. "Is something wrong?" Moxxie asked.
Wraith took a deep breath, trying to find the words that could best describe the frustration they were feeling. They then turned around to face the two. "I just… love you two so much. Seeing you so happy together makes me feel happy, too. I wanted to do you both justice with something that captures… everything I love about you. But I just can't fucking do it. Every single painting I've done so far is nowhere close to what I want! Every time I think of a scenario with you two, it feels so nice in my head, but when I put it into practice, it's… it's not good enough. You both deserve better than what I can give you."
Millie and Moxxie looked at each other, this time with a smile. Moxxie then put a hand on Wraith's shoulder. "I know exactly how you feel." Moxxie said as Wraith looked up at him. "Do you remember that song I sang to Millie at Le Rêve du Feu for our anniversary last year?"
"Oh yeah, that song was amazing!" Wraith said.
"I tried to write the perfect song for Millie, a song that encapsulated everything I loved about her. I remember throwing away so many papers and nearly smashing my guitar. No matter how hard I tried, I just didn't feel like I did the most amazing imp I've ever met justice."
"But… how did you do it then?"
"I stopped trying to make perfection and just… wrote the things she made me feel in the best way I could. Even if I didn't think the lyrics were good enough, I had to sing her something. And let me tell you, when I sang up on that stage, I realized I had made the perfect song for her."
Millie put her hand on Wraith's other shoulder. "Sometimes we have feelings that we think we can't put into the things we create, but you have to keep creatin' away, even if you think it ain't good enough."
"And who knows?" Moxxie said. "Maybe a work in progress you don't think is right could be the thing you're looking for."
Millie continued, "The most important thing is you put yer heart into it. As long as you do that, the folks you make it for will always love it."
Wraith's frown turned into a wide smile as they stood up. "Thank you, that's… exactly what I needed to hear."
"Anything for a friend." Moxxie said before Wraith pulled them both in for a hug.
"Alright, I guess I better give it another shot." Wraith said as he released them and went to fetch another canvas.
"Ya still need help with that?" Millie said.
"No, you two go home. I got this."
The couple nodded before leaving the room, wishing their friend the best, but secretly thankful that they didn't have to stay any longer than they had. Once Wraith placed the canvas on the easel, they cleaned up the mess they made on the ground. As they were doing that, they began thinking of what to paint, contemplating what Millie and Moxxie were saying. Suddenly, they remembered this one time in the office where they spotted Millie kissing Moxxie on the cheek. As she was about to leave, Moxxie pulled her in and kissed her cheek. Eventually this turned into a make out session.
Now that Wraith had their idea, once the mess was cleaned up, they sat on their chair in front of the canvas with brush and palette in hand and began painting.
3 Days Later
A package arrived and Millie and Moxxie's apartment, and when they opened it, they were surprised and overjoyed to see a painting of them kissing. Inside the package was a note from Wraith saying, "I felt it." Knowing that their friend got the inspiration they needed only added to their joy, making this the best anniversary gift they had ever received.
As they admired the painting they had put on the living room table for now, Millie spoke. "Y'know Mox, I would've loved any song you made for me."
"I know." Moxxie said. "And realizing that helped me write something great for you."
Millie smiled before pulling her husband in for a kiss.
