Chapter 14: Mirrors and Shadows
A chilling view of Arcadian Strategic Intelligence headquarters is what Jaune sees as the convoy makes its way through the city. Unlike other structures in Arcadia's capital, this building is daunting, almost menacing. Its exterior is made of an inky black material that seems to absorb light, making it stand out in stark contrast to its surroundings. Pedestrians intentionally cross the street to avoid walking on the headquarters' sidewalk, as if compelled by an unseen force. Even animals seem to steer clear of it, their instincts warning them away. Despite all of the good that ASI does for Arcadia it has a reputation of fulfilling its duty at any cost.
A convoy of vehicles with the Arcadian royal insignia pulls up, appearing almost incongruous against the backdrop of the intimidating building. Guards, as stoic as the edifice behind them, stand at attention, their eyes hidden behind visors but their postures strict and unwavering. With a hushed mechanism, the gates silently slide open, admitting the convoy.
Jaune steps out of the leading vehicle, in a tailored, three-piece suit—black, to match the aesthetic. His appearance is sleek and professional, a sharp deviation from his usual armor or casual wear, yet he still retains an aura of authority. He surveys the towering structure in front of him and takes a deep, steadying breath, his eyes narrowing as if absorbing the gravity of the place and what was about to come.
With a final nod to his driver and a barely perceptible glance towards the multitude of cameras and sensors above, he advances towards the main entrance. The doors open automatically as he approaches, welcoming him into an environment that is anything but warm. Each step seems laden with the weight of the responsibilities and secrets that await him. The imperceptible tinge of anxiety in his steady stride betrays his thoughts about what awaits him within: administers that make Ozpin's staff appear warm and cuddly by comparison
Jaune walks into the ASI headquarters. The building's ominous aura seems to resonate with the gravity of his upcoming meeting. The design is a perfect fusion of advanced technology and brutal functionality. People walking outside give the building a wide berth; even the ambient light seems to hesitate before approaching its dark facade.
His footsteps echo on the dark, reflective floors, and Jaune can't shake the sense he's walking deeper into the mouth of some enormous, dormant beast. Finally, he arrives at the heavy, metallic door of the conference room, guarded by two officers whose posture stiffens at his approach. The door scans his bio-signature and unlocks with a muted, mechanical click, allowing him to enter.
Inside the room, the atmosphere is electric, a tangible blend of tension and anticipation. Director Lysander, a stern-faced man with a demeanor carved from years of hard decisions, rises from his chair at the far end of the room.
"Ah, Prince Jaune," Lysander greets him, his voice tinged with a professional warmth. "It's been some time since the Crescent Fields incident, hasn't it?"
Jaune nods, a flicker of memories flashing through his mind. Crescent Fields had been a covert operation against the White Fang, who had plotted to instigate a famine within Arcadia to turn the faunus population against the royal family. If the operation had succeeded, the White Fang would have framed the crisis as royal negligence, triggering social unrest on an unprecedented scale and use it to usurp the royal family.
"Indeed," Jaune replies. "Crescent Fields was an... eye-opening experience. It's good to see you again, Director."
Lysander gestures for Jaune to take his seat at the long, obsidian-colored table. The room is filled with a tense silence as he sits. Lysander taps a hidden button, and the walls come alive with the faces of high-ranking intelligence officers. Their eyes, unblinking, focus intently on Jaune. The lighting dims, leaving only spotlights on him and Lysander, enhancing the gravity of the meeting.
"We prevented a disaster at Crescent Fields," Lysander starts, "but the risks we face are far from over. Arcadia's safety remains a constant challenge, especially given the various complexities of your... extracurricular activities with Chaldea. Your debrief, Prince Jaune. The council is listening."
With that statement, the room's monitors flash to life, displaying the necessary protocols for a debrief of this magnitude. The weight of the moment settles over Jaune. This isn't just a standard report; it's a cross-examination of his actions, a measure of the trust his homeland has in him, framed by the ever-present shadow of past operations and looming threats.
Collecting his thoughts, Jaune clears his throat before speaking. "Ladies and Gentlemen of the security council, Director Lysander, I understand the gravity of this meeting. During my time with Chaldea, I have faced numerous threats against the greater order of humanity on Earth. In each instance, my actions were guided by my two key mandates fulfilling my promise to defend the human order alongside Chaldea so long as I am in their employ, and find a way back home to Arcadia."
One of the faces on the monitors pipes up, "Have you disclosed any sensitive information about Arcadia during your tenure with Chaldea?"
Jaune meets the officer's gaze steadily. "No, I've maintained operational integrity. I have discussed some elements of Arcadian history when pressed, but only as far as it was necessary to build a rapport with my colleagues. No strategic assets or secrets were divulged in any of my interactions."
"And the reports of you unlocking the aura of some members of Chaldea?" another council member interjects.
"I have granted Aura to a select few members of Chaldea," Jaune replies, holding his ground. "The decision was made to bolster Chaldea's overall capabilities. The recipients have pledged to use their newfound abilities to defend Chaldea, and afterwards they would pursue their own goals on earth. A few of them are also interested in forming an Arcadian Foreign Legion to assist in our missions and join Arcadia."
Lysander's gaze burned into Jaune with an intensity that revealed his urgency. "Explain the Babylonian Singularity; we must understand your leadership role there."
A ripple of emotion surfaces beneath Jaune's facade, and suddenly the room is transformed to the blistering deserts surrounding the city of Uruk. Its ziggurats stretched up to the heavens, a reminder of humanity's former might. His memories are seen in vivid clarity as Jaune charges valiantly through battle after battle, and making decisions between life and death.
The memories narrow in on one particular moment, when he stands face to face with Tiamat as she slowly made her way to Uruk's walls. Jaune stares into the abyss of his own mortality, bracing himself for the battle to come and the sacrifices that might come with it. Some nights all of the efforts of him and his servants aren't enough and he is left walking in the ashes of his failure. Those are the worst.
The memories and fears fade, leaving nothing but heavy silence permeating the air as the officers involuntarily shudder at the gravity of Jaune's experiences. Lysander finally speaks, his voice filled with admiration and respect, "You have faced trials that left most broken beyond repair...yet you still managed to emerge from Crescent Fields alive. Your courage is a beacon of hope against the great dangers encompassing us."
Jaune exhales, his face a complex tapestry of emotion. "The experiences were hard-won, Director. Both in the Babylonian Singularity and at Crescent Fields, the stakes were higher than any could know. I hope the insights gained can serve us all in the times ahead."
Lysander nods gravely, "As do we, Prince Jaune, as do we."
After a brief silence, Director Lysander stirs the meeting back into motion. "Now that we've established the breadth of your experiences, let's discuss our future engagements. Chaldea has resources and knowledge that could be immensely beneficial to Arcadia. In turn, we have much to offer them, both in technology and expertise."
One of the officers on the monitors speaks up. "Could you specify what kind of collaborations we're considering here? Would this involve shared missions or merely an exchange of resources?"
Jaune leans forward, placing his hands on the table. "Both. Our experiences so far have proven that there are forces out in the world interested in Chaldea and by extension me. Therefore, shared missions are almost a necessity. As for resources, I've been in talks with Chaldea about potential exchanges, including technological collaborations with their R&D department headed by Leonardo da Vinci."
Our collaboration could usher in a new era of technological advancement for both parties. Not to mention we could offer instruction in the use of Aura to Chaldea's aura users. "
Lysander nods, clearly pleased. "Excellent. This aligns well with Arcadia's long-term strategic goals. An alliance with an organization like Chaldea, spearheaded by individuals of trust, could be most beneficial."
"Indeed," Jaune agrees. "It would be a partnership forged in the crucible of shared challenges and goals."
Director Lysander shifts slightly, pressing a button that activates a screen on the conference table. "Before we conclude this meeting, there are two other matters we need to discuss. We've noticed a number of purchases and transactions linking back to Earth, particularly involving weapons and supplies. Care to elaborate?"
Jaune feels a slight tension in the air as he prepares to answer. "Ah, yes. Those were authorized by me. Given the vast array of threats we face, and the rapid-response nature of our operations, I considered it prudent to expand our armory and resources. Earth has certain tactical gear and weaponry not available in Arcadia or Chaldea."
"Are you suggesting that our technology is insufficient?" one of the officers questions, a hint of irritation seeping through his professional tone.
"Not at all," Jaune responds carefully. "Arcadian technology is years ahead of what Earth possesses in certain areas. However, variety can be a tactical advantage. Different missions call for different approaches. Having options allows us to be more versatile in the field."
Lysander nods slowly, considering the explanation. "A fair point. Diversity of equipment can indeed be a force multiplier in asymmetrical warfare. Is Chaldea aware of these acquisitions?"
"Yes, they are. They've actually welcomed it, given their own limitations. Additionally, I have acquired through legal and illegal means the blueprints of weapons, armaments, and most importantly for ASI various stealth technologies, materials, and tactics." Jaune said while fighting back a cough that sounded suspiciously like Moriarty.
"Very well," Lysander says, deactivating the screen. "I trust your judgment in this, Prince Jaune. But remember, each move you make doesn't just represent Chaldea but also reflects on Arcadia. Be cautious."
"I understand, Director, and I appreciate the support and counsel," Jaune affirms. "You can expect a detailed report on the effectiveness of these new acquisitions as we deploy them in the field."
Lysander gives Jaune a nod of approval, seemingly satisfied with his answers. "Very well, we'll look forward to that report, Your Highness. Anything else you'd like to discuss?"
"Yes, Director, there is the matter of Chaldea's newest double agent Neopolitan," Jaune replies.
We encountered her during our tour of Site Beta in the disguise of Vale Councilmember Mauve's aide, and initial indications were that she was hostile."
"Hostile? And now you're saying she's working for us?" inquired an officer
"Correct. She was initially deployed to gather intelligence against us, but we managed to turn her. By arranging the transfer of her associate Roman Torchwick to Chaldean custody we have secured her cooperation. She's now operating as a double agent."
"Double agents are risky assets, Prince Arc. You are aware of this fact?"
"Absolutely. We're not taking the situation lightly. Neo understands that we hold considerable leverage over her. Most notably, the continued safety of Roman."
"Hmm, emotional leverage can be potent but volatile. How certain are we of her loyalties?"
"Da Vinci and Caster Gilgamesh are keeping a close eye on her, and we've also put in countermeasures should she decide to betray us. I can confidently say that as of now, her loyalty to our cause is genuine."
"And what information has she provided so far?"
"She's been invaluable. She has extensive knowledge about criminal operations in Remnant that we're still sifting through. Additionally, she will serve as our eyes and ears within her group and report back any threats against either Arcadia or Chaldea. I believe that her change of heart is genuine."
"Very well, Prince Arc. We will mark her down as a high-value asset with conditional loyalty for the moment. But be advised, ASI will monitor this situation closely."
"Roger that, Director. We understand that she can bring a lot to the table; however, we are not disregarding the possible threats she could face while on assignment. If things take a turn and her cover is blown, I would like to utilize the Vale safehouse and its extraction team for her."
Director Lysander thought for a moment before responding. "Yes, we can provide those resources, but I want assurances of her loyalty and reliability first.
"Understood director," Jaune replied without hesitation. He knew that asking ASI to trust an unproven double agent was asking a lot. And that only his relationship with ASI was giving Neo this chance.
Jaune rises to his feet and begins to walk out of the chamber.
The officers in the room snap to attention and salute, their faces hard with respect. Lysander himself stands up, and they share a brief handshake that conveys a thousand silent words.
"You always have a home here, Jaune," Lysander intones quietly, just loud enough for Jaune to hear. "And you're always welcome at ASI, even if it's to share old stories from the Crescent Fields incident with a friend."
Jaune steps through the door into the brilliant midday Arcadian sunlight and takes a deep breath. There is a moment of pause as he feels the weight of his past experiences, his current responsibilities, and the expectations coming from two worlds pressing down on him. But he finds strength in this burden, finding courage in what lies ahead as he gazes upon the shimmering skyline of his beloved city.
