School hallway
On her way to the science classroom, Ultear continued thinking about Natsu. She only met him this morning but the pink haired boy already managed to worm his way into her head. Opposed to her stupid brothers, he was kind and polite and certainly able to hold his temper in. With a scoff, she banished all thoughts on what happened earlier from her head and decided to simply look forward to the chewing out her mom would give Gray later.
Arriving at the classroom of Scorpio, Ultear gave the door a sharp knock and waited for the teacher to answer. Just a few moments later, the door opened and the science teacher Scorpio stood in front of her.
"Oh, Milkovich-san, what brings you to me? Do you have trouble with something we are?"
Ultear chuckled silently at the strange way the tanned man used to speak and let ehr eyes flicker for a moment to his hair. Even after all the years she had him as a teacher, she was still unsure if his hair was naturally dichromatic or if he dyed one half red/white.
"I'm sorry for disrupting your lesson Scorpio-sensei, but I am here to inform you that the new student, Natsu Dragneel will unfortunately be late to your lesson, he is currently helping a fellow student to the nurse's office."
Scorpio's eyebrows rose and he mumbled "Oh good, I was thinking he was ditching my class on the first day." Focusing back on Ultear he said "Thanks for informing me Milkovich-san, I will make a note of it. Have a nice day, we are."
Ultear bid him goodbye and headed for her school library, since she had a free period and nothing better to do.
Later
Zipping up her leather jacket, Ultear grabbed her helmet and scanned the crowd of students leaving the building. She spotted a mop of pink hair making its way towards the students' dorms. Seems like Natsu would be living on the campus. Next, she saw a pair of black and silver hair, both with a helmet in hand and making their way towards her.
With a sigh, Ultear put on her helmet and kick started her motorcycle. Through the visor of her helmet, she leveled her idiotic twin brothers with a fierce glare and then she drove off.
Arriving home, she parked her bike and entered the house she lived in with her family. Kicking off her shoes and walking towards her room, Ultear felt a bit nostalgic today and so she mustered the pictures that adorned the walls.
The first one she saw showed herself, her mother Ur and her biological father. Ultear's biological father was a soldier and shortly after Ur got pregnant, her father got deployed into a bad warzone which was where he also fell. Ur was devastated, because now she had to care for a newborn alone but help arrived quickly in the form of Ur's high-school sweetheart.
Silver Fullbuster entered Ur's life again, and he was a godsend in the pregnancy. This caused the love between the two to inflame once more and so they married even before Ultear was born.
After Ultear's birth, a date night and some drunken sex led to Ur becoming pregnant once more, this time with twins. When Ultear was roughly one and a half years old, she became the big sister of two boys, Lyon and Gray Fullbuster.
A family picture of the five of them was the next picture Ultear studied with a small smile.
When Ultear was 7 years old, an old friend of her mother died in a horrible accident, which left her only daughter orphaned. Ur, being the kind woman she was, immediately discussed with Silver that they could (and should) adopt the little girl, something Silver agreed to. And that's how Meredy came into their life.
A big, happy family, that's what was shown on the rest of the pictures on the walls. The six family members were seen in various combinations, but always with a bright smile on their faces.
But an attentive watcher would recognize that roughly three years ago Ultear's smile started to become fake. It didn't reach her eyes.
Entering her room, Ultear started stripping out of her school uniform in order to change into something more comfortable. When she was left with only her underwear covering her body, she turned around and viewed her back in her large mirror.
There was her most horrible secret. Something nearly nobody knew about and also the reason why she always wore the leather jacket that once belonged to her father. Starting from her shoulder blades and going all the way down to her hips, was a giant x-shaped scar.
Flashback
It happened when Ultear was 14 and in middle school. Gray and Lyon had decided that she needed a boyfriend, so they introduced her to one of their classmates, Zancrow.
Zancrow was certainly attractive for 14 year old Ultear. Muscular, tall, long blonde hair and bright eyes. It didn't take long for Ultear to fall in love with him. Over the next few months, Ultear and Zancrow went on many dates and had a great time together, even her parents approved of him.
But then, one day came the harsh awakening. It was in the summer holidays, Ultear and Zancrow went to a beach party with some friends. It was a great evening, and in the end only Ultear and Zancrow remained. They spend a few romantic hours sitting next to the campfire, watching the stars and enjoying the gentle sea breeze. But suddenly Zancrow became handsy.
"Come on babe, after all this time together, don't you think I deserve a treat?" cackled Zancrow while he was trying to grab Ultear's chest.
"NO ZANCROW!" yelled Ultear desperately while trying to keep him away from her "I DON'T WANT THIS, PLEASE STOP!"
The whole situation escalated completely when Ultear slapped Zancrow as a last resort because he wouldn't stop. Unfortunately, that was the wrong thing to do.
"You BITCH!" screamed Zancrow and backhanded Ultear hard. The purple haired girl fell to the ground where she whimpered and held her cheek. "TEASING ME FOR MONTHS WITH THOSE CANS AND NOW YOU WON'T EVEN LET ME CUP A FEEL?!"
Ultear was starting to get really scared of her boyfriend. "WELL, THEN I WILL AT LEAST LEAVE A MARK ON YOU!" The blonde haired young man kicked Ultear in the stomach until the girl laid on it in order to protect herself.
With a mad cackle, Zancrow grabbed two burning logs from the fire, seemingly completely unharmed by the fire and heat, and then he pressed them onto Ultear's back. The flames burned through her top and into her skin.
Ultear was screaming in pain, tears were rolling down her face but Zancrow was only laughing like a psychopath. "UHAHAHAHAHAHA! THIS IS WHAT YOU DESERVE YOU BITCH!" He threw the logs away and sat down on Ultear's back, which earned him even more pain-filled screams which he clearly enjoyed. He grabbed Ultear's hair and pulled her face up roughly.
"Tell anyone, ANYONE what happened today and I will kill you!" With that he shoved Ultear back into the sand and ran away, leaving the girl quietly crying on the beach.
Flashback end
Ultear jerked violently back to reality. With shaking breaths she sat down on her bed and tried to calm down. After the mauling from Zancrow, she told her family that he betrayed her with some upperclassmen and never wanted to see him again.
But the nail in the coffin for Ultear was that Gray and Lyon insisted that she shouldn't be so stuck up and should give Zancrow another chance. This resulted in Ultear screaming at them for being indelicate idiots. An opinion that was shared by Ur, Silver and Meredy.
Since then, Ultear closed up. She became somewhat cold and indifferent, only really talking with her parents and Meredy. Gray and Lyon, she would look out for them but if they messed up, they could not expect any help from her.
Having calmed down, Ultear quickly slipped into her private clothes, a black light sweater and a pair of brown jeans. Just as she finished zipping up her pants, a knock came from her door.
"Yes?" called Ultear and her cute sister Meredy slipped in. "Hey Ul!" called Meredy and hugged her big sister. Ultear smiled softly and hugged her back.
"Hey sweetie. How was school today?" Asked Ultear as she started to leave her room. Meredy used the opportunity to get a free lift. Like a monkey she clung to Ultear's back and rambled "It was great. Wendy told us that today her big brother would start at our school. Have you met him? He should be in the year under you. Have I told you that he once saved Wendy from a bad man? He was so heroic~ Why are our brothers just slobs?"
Chuckling at the antics of the pink haired girl, Ultear entered the kitchen in order to make tea for herself and Meredy. "Sounds cool. Stayed away from the boys?"
Meredy pouted at her, "I am no baby Ul! Besides, ever since Wendy's brother put Haku in his place, all the boys in our class stay away from us, except Shô and Romeo, and I am pretty sure they are more interested in playing the same team~"
Placing Meredy on the couch and handing her her favorite teacup (a collectors edition of the Muppet Show), Ultear mused "Wendy's brother seems to be everywhere huh? Does my little squirt have a crush~?"
Blushing fiercely at the blush, the younger girl replied "Nononono, I mean, he is handsome and kind, but Wendy has made it quite clear that she called dibs on him" at Ultear's raised eyebrow she added "they are step siblings" this placated Ultear a bit.
The two sisters spent the afternoon talking and joking with each other. After an hour or so, the twins entered the house, completely drenched.
"Thanks for the ride Ultear" grumbled Lyon. "Yeah, it's always great to have such a caring sister" hissed Gray.
Ultear just glared at them in return "Once you asshole learn to not hit girls that are confessing their feelings to you. As for you Lyon, you probably deserved walking anyways."
"WAIT! JUVIA CONFESSED TO YOU!?" yelled Lyon. "I WAS GONNA ASK HER OUT TOMORROW! AND YOU HIT HER?!"
"SHUT UP YOU FUCKER!" answered Gray and just like that, the twin brothers were engaged in a heated brawl.
Ultear sighed and turned to the young girl next to her "And exactly that is why boys are stupid and you should stay away from them, got it?"
Meredy took a sip of her tea and asked "Does that mean daddy is also stupid?"
This earned her a chuckle from Ultear "Hehe no. He can be a goof sometimes but he is a man. Boys are stupid, then they grow up into men and are no longer stupid."
Meredy's eyes sparkled at the wisdom her sister just shared with her.
Dinner
Everyone could feel the tension at the dining table. When Ur was done serving everyone, Silver asked his youngest son in barely contained anger "Gray, can you tell me why I got a call today from your school where I was told that you are suspended for two weeks? Today was the first school day for god's sake!"
The black haired boy poked his food and grumbled "It was nothing old man"
"Don't talk to your father like that young man and nobody gets suspended over 'nothing'!" hissed Ur.
"Some crazy stalker bitch asked me out and from there it escalated. It's just a misunderstanding."
Ultear scoffed and said "A misunderstanding? That's a good one. That poor girl poured her heart to you and you slapped her, insulted her and if it wasn't for Natsu, would have hit her again"
"YOU WHAT?!" yelled their parents "ASSHOLE!" shouted Lyon and "You know Natsu?" from Meredy was heard all around the dining table.
After a few minutes of shouting around, Gray got grounded for a month and would receive a stern talk from his parents, Lyon also got grounded for two weeks when he started laughing at Gray and Ultear had to retell the incident in detail, which resulted in Meredy swooning over Natsu even more. Her final words for the night before she went to bed were "I have to text this to Wendy!"
Next day, dojo
The whole shitshow with Zancrow had one, exactly one good thing. Ultear discovered martial arts as a hobby. It was fun and a great way to keep in shape, also, she would now be able to beat up anyone who came too close to her. Natsu only avoided an ass whooping yesterday because he broke the hug so quickly.
Today was Friday. Ultear went to the training dojo of the Fairy school complex on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, because on those days normally no one would be there and she could train like she wanted.
As she walked into the dojo dressed in her white training suit, she was surprised to hear grunting. Curiously, she peeked into the training room and there she saw Natsu. He was dressed in white shorts with a black cloth around his waist and a black vest with gold trimmings. He was also wearing the same white scaled scarf she saw him with yesterday.
Ultear watched in fascination how Natsu went through an elaborately complex fighting sequence. He moved through numerous dummies, each one was blown over with three hits or less. While Ultear was certainly no expert, it still looked like Natsu was switching fighting styles very fluently. Or was he even using any particular style?
Deciding to make herself known once he finished his routine, Ultear cleared her throat loudly. This caused Natsu to look up and look around. Once his eyes fell on her, his face lit up and he ran over to her.
"Hello Ultear-senpai" said Natsu and gave her a small bow, a sign of respect in martial arts. "Are you here to train?"
"Yes" replied Ultear curtly. "Cool!" grinned Natsu "What style are you using? I mostly use my dragon style, but sometimes there is nothing that beats good old boxing" he then did an impressive backflip and landed in a perfect handstand "or I do Capoeira, real fun I tell you." He jumped back on his feet only to see that Ultear was gone.
"Senpai?" he called and quickly spotted Ultear a few meters away from him, where she was currently stretching. "I practice Tae-Kwon-Do. Second Dan if you really want to know. But I never heard of this dragon style. Is it some form of Kung-Fu?" she asked while doing a picture perfect bridge.
This in turn gifted Natsu with a beautiful view of her very large, bandage-covered breasts. With great effort, he forced his eyes back into her face and replied "no, it's more like some sort of self-invented style. My dad taught it to me. You just fight with your whole body. Leg-swipes, headbutts, punches, simply use whatever your body can offer as a weapon at the moment."
Ultear hummed in interest and slowly finished her pre-workout. She mustered Natsu with a critical eye and then said "usually, I am alone in here, but since you're here now, let's make the best out of it."
She walked into the storage room and came back with an orange pylon, which she dropped in the middle of the room. "Just stay on your side and I won't kick you ass."
This might have come out rudely, but Ultear was simply not used to training with another person nearby. Had she known that Natsu was in here, she would have put on a top.
Natsu on the other hand scoffed lightly and mumbled "Would like to see you try but alright."
He then walked towards his half of the room and took a deep breath, but his comment was heard by Ultear. "Excuse me?" she said, quite pissed. "Did you just say I had no chance against you?"
Natsu looked at her strangely and replied "I haven't said it like that but mostly yeah. I have beaten people with a higher Dan than you have without a single scratch. But if you want" he then punched his palm and grinned "we can gladly have a spare fight. I am bark and bite!"
Now this was interesting…."Give me thirty minutes to properly warm up, then I will put you in your place!" said the purple haired girl confidently.
35 minutes later
Completely spent, Ultear had no chance dodging the powerful headbutt Natsu delivered to her midsection. She hunched over and that was all the pink haired boy needed. Expertly, he jumped into a handstand and used his legs as a scissor. One leg pushed against her lower back while the other pushed against her collarbone.
With a squeal, Ultear fell down and before she could stand back up, she felt a foot resting on her collarbone, just above her breasts. Following the foot and looking up, she saw Natsu grinning down at her. "Told ya! But that was a very good fight Ultear-Senpai!" He lifted his foot off of her and extended his hand to her.
Ultear took his hand and allowed him to pull her up. She didn't just lose against Natsu, he annihilated her. No matter what she did, Natsu was always able to either avoid or block her attacks. And he showed her his dragon style, oh yes. It was as if she was fighting against a fierce beast, not a human. In the fight he used every last part of his body for fighting, moving fast and strong.
Also, he had way more stamina than her, something that peeved her off greatly. "You didn't lie. I don't hold a candle against you Natsu." said Ultear with a small smile. Natsu chuckled and replied "Don't sell yourself short Senpai. You are really talented, just a bit rough at the edges but with a bit more training you will become unbeatable!"
"Thanks Natsu. Do you mind if I quit right now? You really put me through something here." Natsu ducked his head apologetically and said "Sorry for that Senpai. How about we head out for a quick snack? Like a sandwich or something like that?"
"Tempting…alright, but you pay and I decide where we go." "GREAT!" Beamed Natsu at her and ran off towards the shower rooms. Ultear stared after him, once more in awe 'Does his stamina ever run out?' she wondered.
But then she remembered the very nice view she got while the two were training and her mind headed to a dangerous place 'Hm…could be useful in the bedroom and-WAIT! What the fuck, where did that come from?'
Furiously shaking her head, Ultear headed towards the woman's showers, looking forward to a very cold shower.
Three weeks later
After their first training together, Natsu and Ultear fell into a routine. While Natsu trained everyday, Ultear still only went three times a week. When they trained together, they would sometimes spar against each other, where Natsu won every single time. But Ultear managed to land more and more hits against the pink beast as she dubbed Natsu in her mind.
After each training, they would head out together and grab an afternoon snack. On these occasions, they learned a lot about each other. Natsu learned about Ultear and her family, and Ultear learned about Natsu, his fascination with the martial arts and the reason why he wore that damned scarf 24/7. (He got it from his dad and LOVED it, it's as simple as that :D)
Today was a day like any other. Ultear got her ass handed to her by Natsu, who decided to try something new today. Today, he only used long ranged, strong arm and leg swipes. Ultear had no chance, the first hit she took disoriented her so severely that she was unable to defend herself properly.
Of course, Natsu apologized to her a thousand times. In his overeagerness to make it up to her, he carried Ultear into her locker room and started undressing her. Only when her chest literally jumped into his face did his brain manage to catch up with what was happening. That did of course not stop Ultear from kicking him in the face hard. Her face resembled a tomato from how strong she was blushing, and Natsu apologized another thousand times.
When Ultear threatened to gut and castrate him, Natsu hauled out of the women's locker room. When Ultear finally emerged, still blushing a bit, Natsu awaited her with a huge ice cream. Ultear took the peace offering and agreed to go out for dinner since it was quite late already.
While Natsu texted Wendy that he would not eat in his dorm tonight, Ultear called her mother and told her she would be having dinner with a friend.
"You are going out with a friend? Who?" asked Ur curiously.
"Natsu Dragneel, an underclassman. Why do you ask?" wondered Ultear.
"A BOY?!" Ultear winced at how loud her mother yelled. "SILVER! GET THE GOOD CHAMPAGNE OUT OF THE CELLAR! ULTEAR HAS A DATE! ARE YOU DRESSED PROPERLY? SHOULD I BRING YOU SOME NICE CLOTHES? DO YOU WAN-" Whatever Ur wanted to say next was cut off by Ultear screaming "IT IS NOT A DATE!" and then she hung up.
Seeing Natsu look at her amused, Ultear hissed "Not a word of this to anyone, got it?" Natsu zipped his mouth shut with a grin. "Good" approved Ultear "now come, I'm starving." and with that she grabbed Natsu's hand and pulled him with her.
After dinner
Natsu and Ultear sighed in content. The Pizza place Ultear demanded they go to was truly delicious, and the extra spicy pepperoni pizza tasted heavenly. Right now, the two teens were talking and joking around, blissfully unaware of the young blonde man passing the outdoor area where they were seated.
"Wait, so you ate the fudge?" laughed Ultear. Natsu was currently telling her a story from his MMA middle school. "Sting said I couldn't do it so my honor was at stake. Besides, 500 jewels is still money" pouted Natsu.
Nearly falling out of her chair, Ultear choked out "But 5 kilograms fudge in half an hour? What were you thinking?" Grinning, Natsu replied "That I wanted to prove something and win the bet. The cherry on top was when I barfed at Laxus' feet."
Shaking her head in amusement, Ultear took a sip of her drink. She was really starting to like Natsu. She could now confidently say that all the qualities he showed on his first day of school, were his true characteristics. He was really funny, great at listening, maybe not necessarily book smart, but certainly street smart. Natsu was very polite, but also genial. His whole being was warm and welcoming. In roughly three weeks, Ultear had unconsciously developed a crush on Natsu.
Unfortunately, their togetherness was disrupted by an obnoxious leery voice. "Ultear? That you?"
Said purple haired girl froze when she heard that voice while Natsu looked curiously towards the speaker. It was a young man about his age, with long, wild blond hair and crazy looking red eyes. His eyes flickered shortly to Ultear, and when Natsu saw her frozen face he knew that something wasn't right.
Discreetly, he pulled out his phone, called a number and put it on speaker.
"Oh damn Ultear, never thought I'd see you again. You know, after our little spat I was forced to change schools, but don't worry, the Grimoire academy is quite good. Maybe you should transfer to it as well? Yes, that would be a good idea, don't you think so as well?" he slipped onto the bench next to Ultear, slipped his arm around her and pulled her closer to him.
Ultear never resisted him, all the fear she had in her since that horrible day came back to her. Her mind screamed at her to run or at least call for help, but her whole body was frozen.
Zancrow continued talking about how Ultear will transfer to his school, but he was suddenly cut off when a smack caught his attention. Natsu slammed his fist on the table and was now glaring at Zancrow. "Piss off blondie. Can't you see that she doesn't want that?"
Zancrow raised an eyebrow and cackled "What's it to you pinkie? Who are you anyways?" Suddenly, his eyes began to switch rapidly between Natsu and Ultear. "No way" said the blonde haired man and began laughing "That's your new fucker? UHAHAHAHAHA, buddy, I will only say this once. These" when he said this, he roughly grabbed Ultear's chest, causing the girl to give a silent squeak "are mine. So back off before I kill you, got it?"
While he said this, Zancrow leaned back, closed his eyes and flicked open a switchblade. Unfortunately for him, he couldn't know that Natsu started moving the second he grabbed Ultear.
Natsu jumped over the table and tackled Zancrow to the ground. The blonde of course didn't like that, he quickly tried to stab Natsu with his knife. But Natsu was well trained in armed and unarmed combat. With a backflip, he kicked the knife out of Zancrow's hand, then he delivered the mother of all upper-cuts to the psycho, which was enough to knock him out. Natsu finished the battle with two moves and under thirty seconds.
He quickly asked for a glass of water from a waiter and started to talk gently to Ultear, who was still frozen in fear. "It's alright Ultear-Senpai, he can't hurt you anymore"
Ultear took a shaky sip and stuttered "H-h-h-ho-how c-c-can y-y-y-you kn-know?" Natsu replied in a soothing voice "Because of him" and pointed towards the parking lot. Ultear looked towards where his finger pointed hesitantly and saw an orange haired police officer jumping out of his car.
The tall and muscular man made his way towards them and said in a strong voice "My name is Sg. Gildarts Clive! Everybody stay calm and listen to my instructions." He looked at Zancrow still lying on the floor and asked Natsu "Is this the guy?" Natsu just nodded and with that Gildarts went to work.
After the near abduction of Wendy, Gildarts slowly but surely became a trusted family friend of the Dragneel household, which was the reason why Natsu had his personal phone number.
In roughly 20 minutes, Gildarts took statements from everyone who was an eyewitness, put Zancrow in handcuffs and hauled his still unconscious ass into his police car. "What happens to him now Gildarts?" asked Natsu. Scanning his notes briefly, Gildarts replied "The case is pretty airtight. He will get at least 10 years in prison, together with an extensive psychological evaluation. Depending on what it says, he might as well never leave prison."
He then looked at Ultear, who was slowly calming down. "Miss Milkovich, it seems that you have some history with him. I would like to ask you to please come to the police station in the next few days and tell us. Trust me, nobody beside me will ever hear it, but it might help the case." Instead of answering him, Ultear looked at Natsu and asked "Will you come with me?"
Surprised by this sudden request, Natsu answered "If you want me to, I'll gladly come with you." Smiling softly, Ultear nodded at Gildarts, who bid his farewell.
Two days later
To say that Natsu was angry was as to say that the sky was blue. He was FURIOUS! After Ultear told Gildarts (and by extension Natsu) what happened between her and Zancrow, Natsu was all for heading towards the holding cells and unaliving Zancrow himself. It took a lot out of Gildarts to put Natsu down, it would be no good if there was suddenly another angry teenager in their cells.
After that, Natsu and Ultear took a long walk through Magnolia, where Natsu did everything in order to cheer Ultear up. When they were close to her home, Natsu said "I am really sorry for what that bastard did to you. All I can offer you is that I will protect you from now on. And I hope we can continue our training!" He finished with a soft smile.
Ultear smiled back at him, not one of her fake smiles, or a cold one like she usually did. It was a true, warm and heartfelt smile that nobody saw for years. "Thank you for everything Natsu. Yes, I would also like to continue training. And thanks for bringing me home."
Grinning, Natsu replied "No problem Senpai. See you at school?" Ultear nodded happily and just wanted to head home, but then suddenly a thought shot into her head. Natsu had a younger step-sister who, according to Meredy, called dibs on Natsu. While the purple haired girl was certain that Natsu's sister was an absolute sweetheart (according to tales from Meredy and Natsu himself), it just wouldn't do for Natsu to fall into the hands of some little girl. That's why Ultear decided to also lay claim on Natsu.
Fast as lightning, Ultear grabbed Natsu's face and gave him a shallow, but loving kiss. "See you tomorrow, my dear Natsu."
And with that she ran towards her house, silently cheering over the fact that she successfully stole Natsu's first kiss (she didn't lol). Natsu, on the other hand, stood frozen in the middle of the street.
'I hope she doesn't start getting weird like Hisui or Lucy or' he shuddered 'Mira. Egh, better head back, I promised Wendy that I will cook today.' And with that Natsu headed back to his dorm.
To Natsu's dismay, he severely underestimated how closely his little sister was looking at him. Wendy needed exactly 83 seconds to realize that somebody kissed Natsu. But the stubborn idiot just wouldn't tell who it was by himself. Her subtle attempts of getting him to talk failed due to his denseness. Cursing, Wendy decided to save that conversation for another day.
Ultear on the other hand decided to become a bit more offensive. From the next day onward, she became much more open in her affections towards Natsu, often hugging him or sitting with him during lunch. This brought Natsu the ire of his classmates. Also, Ultear's training outfit became slowly but surely tighter and shorter. Not that Natsu noticed until Ultear practically trained only in her underwear with him.

Ultear had a pretty dark past, and as I said in the previous chapter, there are all kinds of scumbags and psychos in this world. However, our pink haired hero managed to worm his way into the heart of another beautiful young woman.
