A/N: Think I'm getting through this too fast? I dunno, I figure I'd at least get as many chapters of this done before my focus wanes on it. Plus, I guess finishing up the gameplay of Black 2 for this story helped a lot. Oh, and before I forget, I will be changing the poll in a few days to figure out a few things for this story. Right now, it's mainly asking for opinions on ideas for Surprising Each Other (if you want something more romance/fluff related between Yusei and Ren). For now, let's get on with the show!
PS: I'm going to take a slight note out of Pokémon Origins due to the fact that this flashback is going to feature some training between a fully evolved Fire-type and a newly obtained Water-type starter.
Disclaimer: I do not own Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's nor Pokémon. Both go to their respective owners. I only claim my OCs. And prepare the soap for Ren's potty mouth
Chapter 3:
(Flashback, Ren's POV)
"Blue, Water Gun!" I commanded. Ellis was helping me train a bit since I asked him for a bit of aid. I still wasn't keen on taking on the Gyms, but it'd be helpful to at least know how a real Pokémon battle felt like.
"Oshaaaa...wott!" Blue sucked in a breath and sprayed water toward Cross.
"Cross, Mystical Fire!" Ellis ordered.
"Phox!" Cross took out the flaming stick from his fur. He made a circle of fire in the air and blew a line of fire. The two attacks collided for a second before the Mystical Fire pushed through the Water Gun, evaporating it.
"Osha osha osha!" Blue yelped, running out of the way of the flames. He jumped behind me to hide.
"Uh...you okay there, Blue?" I asked, looking down at him. He gave a quick nod with a scared look on his face. "Yeah, sorry 'bout that. Cross is really high leveled compared to you." I recalled Blue back into his ball. "Well, shit. I thought a Water Gun could douse Cross's flame."
"Not always. Once a Fire-type gets used to their fire in their final form, it can get strong enough to not even be doused by a water move. Just going to see if that will be enough against Cress," Ellis stated.
"That still doesn't make sense. They go with the type strongest to the starter registered, right? Isn't that a bit unfair?"
"It's to teach Trainers about the type match-ups. Though, since I registered as a veteran Trainer, it'll more be like testing how I deal with disadvantages over an advantage."
"Yeah, that oughta be fun, huh?"
(Present Day, Yusei's POV)
It didn't take too long to reach the ranch Ren had mentioned wanting to go to. Along with obviously trained Pokémon, wild ones seemed to often come in and leave at their own convenience. Though, when the wild Pokémon saw us, they scattered. Probably thinking that we were there to shoo them away (though, since Ren didn't seem to make a fuss about them, I doubt they would have been chased off normally).
Walking a bit into the ranch, Ren spotted a woman with light ash-brown hair and gold eyes. She looked up from raking, also seeing Ren. "Oh, Ren!" she greeted.
"Hey, Chelsea," he replied.
She set the rake against the gate, heading over. "Good to see you, little brother. I suppose the trip back was safe?"
"Erm, sort of, but I had help from Yusei here." He nodded to me. "A few Team Plasma goons recognized me and he got them off my back."
"Oh!" She looked at me. "Thank you for helping him."
"It was no problem, ma'am," I replied.
"Please, just call me Chelsea. Let's head inside. It's been a long day, and I'm sure you both would like something to eat and drink."
We headed into the house on the property. An Eevee was sleeping on the back of the couch in the living area while a Mincinno was dusting the mantle a bit, jumping down when the Pokémon heard us coming in. The Eevee even yawned and stretched. There were several toys scattered around in the living room and some in the kitchen when we headed in. "Sorry about the mess. Fergus just left with the kids to Nimbasa and I had barely enough time to get their toys put up," Chelsea said with a chuckle.
"And you gave flack for a messy room," Ren retorted with a smirk.
"Only because your room was as bad as your language."
"I hold back around the kids, I promise."
"Mm-hmm, well I hope so. I don't want to have to buy more bars of soap because they followed their uncle."
"Oh, that reminds me. How has Blue been doing?"
Chelsea sighed. "He's been doing better, but I doubt he'd ever be strong enough to battle in the Gyms at his health stage. He can handle doing a few of his old moves and attacks. Anything else would be too hard on his body."
"I see...erm, I think I'll get the meal later. I wanna check to see how everyone is doing."
"Okay. Don't take too long!" Ren nodded and turned back around, going outside.
Once he was gone, that left only Chelsea and I inside along with the two Pokémon she had roaming the house. "You can head out too, if you want. It's going to take me a few minutes to get anything ready," Chelsea spoke up.
"Actually, I wanted to ask a few things about Ren," I replied.
"If it's anything to do with that event two years ago, I'm afraid I can't tell much."
"Well, it mainly pertains to his marks."
She paused in what she was doing. "So you told you about them?"
"A little. He said he had some sort of blessing from Reshiram but no control over it, which is why he needed me to step in to chase the Plasma goons away. I figured you might have a few more details about them."
"Not as much as you're hoping for, I'm afraid. After what happened with Ellis, most of Ellis's team, and two of Ren's partners, I tried to look up what I could about the marks. I even got Lenora helping for a while before she went back to focusing on the museum. It seems like whenever a Legendary Pokémon is impressed with a person, they put the marks on them."
"But Ren has ones for Zekrom and Kyurem."
"Yes, I know. It seems like when Reshiram 'chose' Ren, it also seemed to bring out those marks as well. I reached out to a few known mark users, but they couldn't say much about their marks or any information."
"Is there a reason for that?"
"Well, I suppose when you're tied with a god-like being, you probably wouldn't want to give out too much in case that person is tied with any groups that would abuse their abilities."
"Fair point."
She pulled a few boxes down. The Mincinno from earlier hopped onto the counter next to her. "Ren and Ellis had gotten mixed up with Team Plasma all those years ago. Ren had traveled with Ellis as Ellis wanted to test his skills in Unova after turning down facing the Champion back in Kalos. Team Plasma had gotten a hold of Zekrom through their leader at the time. Ellis went for the other dragon in the mean time."
"But Ren ended up with the marks and Reshiram."
"Yes. After the whole debacle, Ren had been shut down for a long time. It didn't help that his starter, Blue, had gotten so badly hurt that he would never be able to participate in Pokémon battles, much less the League fights."
"Wait, so Team Plasma..?"
"It seemed like another way they could 'liberate' Pokémon from evil Trainers was through death. Though Blue and Ren's Pokémon could stand easily toe-to-toe with Team Plasma grunts, it seemed like their leader didn't show any mercy."
I sat there in shock. It was rare to hear about Pokémon dying during battle. Even during Gym battles or any League fights, the Pokémon only used the necessary strength to knock the other out. They never go to the death unless there was an accident or mistreatment from the Trainer. "So this Team Plasma not only took Ren's brother but also his own Pokémon? How did any of them escape the police?"
Chelsea shook her head and shrugged. "No telling. They might have had an escape plan in case something went wrong, though I doubt many got out of there. Some did get arrested, however, so there have been some that got their time."
"I guess so. Is there anything else I need to know? I'd rather like to know if there are any other triggers for Ren other than his brother's name."
(Ren's POV)
"Emerald, Jason, come on out!" I yelled, throwing their Poké balls into the air. The Snivy and Purrloin came out in a flash of light.
"Sni Snivy!"
"Prrow."
The two looked at the three Pokémon in front of them. Standing in front of them was Chopper the Sawk, Archie the Archeops, and Cover the Cofagrigus. A few of the others that I used during the journey laid nearby, notably Courage the Stoutland and Clayton the Gigalith. Maple the Sawsbuck was grazing several feet away, now in his spring form.
"Emerald, Jason. These guys are some Pokémon I traveled with some years ago. While we're here, you can train with them to prepare for the Gym."
"Sni Sni."
"Mreow."
I looked around, not seeing Blue anywhere nearby. Right, he must be resting further in the property, I thought. Maybe somewhere around the water? That would be the best place for him to keep from overexerting himself. I turned to see what Emerald and Jason were doing.
Emerald was throwing a few Vine Whips at Archie who jumped out of the way of each attack. From what battles we had on the way here, Emerald seemed to get a bit hot-headed if his attacks didn't land like they should have. This time, however, he seemed to not mind them missing and was even grinning at the prehistoric Pokémon in front of him.
Jason, in the mean time, had himself puffed up as Courage came up to sniff at him. He even did the Krabby walk at the Stoutland, daring him to even make another step closer to the Purrloin. Courage just laid there, looking a mix of confused and bemused. Jason hopped up closer, popped Courage on the nose, and then jumped back to prepare for an attack. Courage continued to lay there.
I decided since they were both busy that I might as well go look for Blue. I hope he doesn't mind that Emerald will be going on this journey and not him like we had wanted, or I guess as he wanted.
(No One's POV)
As Ren walked away from the small crowd of his Pokémon, a figure loomed in the bushes several feet away. They pressed the device in their ear. "Target sighted. Preparing for retrieval."
(Flashback, N's Castle)
Ghetsis smirked as Ellis stepped up to the entrance of the large room. The Delphox next to him snarled at the man, getting into a battle stance. "So you finally came, the chosen of Reshiram," he smirked. "Though, I doubt it would make much of a difference. N has been raised to be the perfect hero of Zekrom. Nothing can stand in his way!"
Ellis kept silent, though he shared the same glare as Cross. "Nothing to say, boy? Then go, face your opponent and fall in defeat! See the birth of a new world, where humans and Pokémon are separated!" The head sage stepped aside.
Even if Reshiram is not at my side, I refuse to let that happen, Ellis thought as he walked into the large room. Several feet away, N sat on the throne. He appeared to have been expecting the other Trainer.
"Ellis, you've arrived," N spoke, standing from his throne. "Come forward, then, if you're prepared to face me."
"I am," Ellis said. Cross looked at his Trainer for a second, and then also stood up straight. Ellis and Cross walked to the grand center of the throne room, Ellis's hands reaching for the other Poké balls at his waist. As soon as they got close enough, he released the others in his party.
Standing beside Cross was Ciel the Furfrou, a Tyranitar, a Nidoking, a Gogoat, and an Aromatisse. They all stood between Ellis and the approaching N. N gave a quick glance at the team. "I do not see Reshiram among your team," he commented.
"Reshiram won't be participating nor is needed," Ellis replied. "I plan on stopping you with our own strength!"
N closed his eyes. "A pity, I was hoping for a battle between heroes." He opened his eyes. "I believed you were that hero. After all, your Pokémon spoke so highly of you. But perhaps I was wrong. You weren't the hero Reshiram chose." He lifted up a hand. "Zekrom! To me!"
A roar shook the room. The Pokémon tensed up as the Vast Black Pokémon crashed into the room from behind the throne. It let out a roar, electricity zapping around it strong enough to cause the water to evaporate. It stopped its power to glare down at the group who dared to oppose the human it chose.
Ellis gritted his teeth. "Cross! Ciel! Mason! Zach! Charlotte! Spirit! Get ready! This will be the fight for our lives!" The six Pokémon each let out a battle cry in response to their Trainer.
N let out the rest of his team: Archeops, Klinklang, Zoroark, Carracosta, and Vanilluxe. "You have no hope of winning. Alder fell easily to Zekrom's and my power. Why do you still resist?"
"Because I know what's right, and whatever crap Ghetsis fed you is all a lie! Pokémon and humans need each other to strive to higher heights. The world you're hoping for will only harm Pokémon! You said you can hear Pokémon's voices, but you don't understand their hearts!"
This caused the green-haired Trainer to narrow his eyes. "How dare you. If that's how you want to end things, then so be it. Zekrom, Fusion Bolt!"
Zekrom roared, spreading its wings as electricity gathered around it. "Zach, counter it with Poison Jab!"
"Nidoo!" Zach roared, charging in with his horn glowing a deeper purple.
The two attacks collided. Zach wasn't phased by the electricity but still got pushed back some feet. Zach's attack, likewise, didn't even scratch the dragon's heavy armor. Shoot, guess the legends were true. Well, if physical attacks won't work, then... "Spirit! Moonblast!"
A pall of pink light formed in the Aromatisse's hands once she jumped in front of the Nidoking. Right as the attack launched, N barked an order. "Klinklang!"
The Steel-type floated in front of Zekrom and took the attack, though it did falter a bit from the move. "Now, Flash Cannon!" The Klinklang's gears turned as it gathered power. When the attack headed for the Fairy-type, Zach moved and covered the smaller Pokémon.
"Aro?!"
"Nido."
"Zach, you good?" Ellis asked. The Nidoking nodded at him. He sighed in relief. Damn. He's strong, but I can't give up. Reshiram or no, hero or no, I refuse to stand aside and let Team Plasma win!
A/N: Okay, so, that last little flashback wasn't originally planned, but the chapter would have been too short otherwise, so have a short little look into what happened that fateful day! I might add the rest in a later chapter if I feel like I'm not able to make the chapter end well enough.
As for last chapter, I asked for theories over Yusei's second Pokémon and Crimson Priestess of Miracles guessed one of the Magnemite line. Sorry, no Magnemite/Magneton/Magnezone, but he does get a different Steel-type later on in this adventure. I gave a slight hint in chapter 1 before Yusei talks with Ren during his thought process (I tend to headcannon Pokémon that are Psychic-type or can learn Psychic-type moves can use telepathy). Checking notes, it'll be around chapter eighteen before the second Pokémon is revealed, so there's still time before the big surprise. Anyway, see you next chapter!
Also, let me know if anyone wants a full detailed list of Ellis's Pokémon prior to their fall. I have them in my notes if anyone can't remember Ren's original first team.
