PSYCHOKINESIS

Summary: For as long as Sonic can remember, Silver was always flying. When they were fighting, when they were exploring. When they were shopping in the nearest town and even when he just wanted to get off of the couch. He was always floating around, never to land on the earth below. There's a reason for that.
Only, it wasn't something Sonic would've ever expected

The Forces war had ended, but that doesn't mean Eggman's attack would cease.
Today was supposed to be Sonic and Silver off day. Where they could rest from the restoration clean up and just enjoy the sky. It was a holiday long time coming, forced by Amy and, surprisingly Knuckles. Using Sonic's speed and Silver's psychokinesis, they helped a lot in fixing up the places; with the former bringing in a ton of building materials to use while the latter made sure the crumbling city wouldn't suddenly collapse and claim a stray soul. But because of that, these two were worked to the bone. Bags were starting to form under their eyes. With intervention from basically everyone, two of the strongest fighters of the Resistance were now having a nice walk on a rebuilding city. Or flying, in Silver's case.
Sonic didn't mind. He might plaster a happy-go-lucky persona and throw smiles here and there. But being locked up in Eggman's base for six months straight still left a deep scar in his psyche anyway. The sudden bout of anger that he felt when badniks showed up instead of excitement at the prospect of an obstacle like usual. The nightmares startled him awake and left him frozen with his heart thumping erratically. He didn't tell his friends about this though, for the fear of their concern. Besides, witnessing the restoration process did calm his mind anyway. Knowing that the world has finally started to heal.
But of course, the mad doctor won't let them have the peace for too long. Because, right as they just finished ordering their respective favorite ice cream to accompany the leisure stroll, Eggman came barrelling in. Riding his egg-shaped vehicle and bringing in a lot of robots.
The battle was easy, all things considered. Eggman's forces were hurting after the loss of Infinite, so he opted for quantity instead of quality. His robots were easy to break. Just a spin dash, and they're good to go. Silver even turned the tide by using the said robots as his own projectiles. Disrespecting the doctor's creation by turning what he made into a weapon for the heroes.
However, even if they're strong, they could be overwhelmed just as easily. After all, they were only two Mobians. Two tired Mobians who were supposed to be resting, yet instead, got surrounded by mechanical beings that seemed to be increasing in numbers rather than the other way around. Not to mention, they have to keep the debris away from some of the civilians who didn't have a chance to seek shelter, as Eggman's attack did come out of nowhere. So, their concentration was kind of divided. And it didn't take long before one of them took a significant hit.
A jump here, another spin dash there, Sonic vaguely saw Eggman fishing out something from beneath his vehicle's console. He pointed a particularly big, and comical-looking, nail gun (It looked like a nail gun but with a wider muzzle. The nail itself was less than a nail and resembled that of a staple) at him. Sonic's movement brought him into the air. With no land nor enemies closer to use as a springboard, hence no chance to dodge any incoming strike whatsoever. Eggman must've been waiting for that, for Sonic was now stuck with nowhere to go.
There was a bang. Something launched from inside the barrel.
Sonic's eyes widened in shock—
—before a body covered in cyan light pushed him away.
And Silver was thrown far. Landing on the ground so hard, he created an explosion of dust.
"SILVER!"
"Ah, Chaos dangit. I want to capture the Blue rat instead of that brat," Eggman grumbled, irritation clear on that face of his, "That was the only collar I was able to make within the time limit too. Now I have to go back to the drawing board..."
"You..." Sonic turned toward the enemy, his emerald eyes flashed with anger. The tips of his quill turned dark blue and sparks seemingly emit from within, "You'll pay for that."
"What?!" the man had the gall to sound annoyed, "Come on! You seriously turned dark just because of that?"
Just because of that?
Clearly Eggman didn't know him enough if he thought threatening the safety of his friends wouldn't make him go berserk. Sure, he tried not to show this form in front of comrades and civilians too often. Not wanting them to lose their morale at the sight of their leader consumed by rage. But nobody's here right now. The trapped citizens were huddling into the corners and not looking at the ensuing battle, his partner was thrown sky high. Nobody is paying attention.
So Sonic could go as wild as he wanted.
With a speed that was almost blinding, he destroyed every single one of Eggman's robots. Where it usually took at least two hits to wreak doctor's creations, they were now obliterated in one. His pupils were gone, leaving only white eye sockets. He ripped, tore, and shredded every metal to pieces. No mercy. No hesitation. Sonic arrived right in front of Eggman, punched the humongous nail gun away, then drop-kicked the control panel on his vehicle. The robots that were still moving immediately stopped. And the backups were no longer coming.
At the same time, Eggman's ride spewed a lot of white smoke that hindered the sight. Must've been that failsafe of his. And true to Sonic's guess, when the smoke finally thinned out, the mad doctor was nowhere to be found.
He could try searching for him. Eggman was no speedster. Just because he managed to hide, doesn't mean he can escape. He won't be far.
But Sonic's first priority is always his friend. And right now, he has a lost friend to find and collect.
With a deep sigh that caused the dark quills to recede back into blue, Sonic took off toward Silver's last known location. The other hedgehog didn't come to help the Hero of Mobius to fight Eggman off, strangely. Sonic could chalk it up to him being too fast on taking care of the madman and Silver was too far away to offer the said help. But he couldn't shake this feeling that something must've happened to him. Did he hurt? Did that attack cause enough injury to debilitate?
And the nail gun. What kind of tech Eggman have exactly created if it was meant to capture Sonic, the fastest Mobian alive? Was it something made off of Phantom Ruby? Or did he find a capable gem replacement?
Sonic climbed one of the tallest buildings in the town to see better. And it didn't take long until he was able to find the missing comrade. Silver was sprawled on the rooftop of a ruined building, hidden by the surrounding broken trees. He looked disoriented. Quills were messy, a bunch of leaves stuck at a random part of his body. He even lost one of his shoes. Probably got snagged by the greeneries when Eggman's tech threw him off course. Fortunately, there were no visible injuries so Sonic could breathe a little easier.
He amped up his speed and jumped, managing to reach the opposite building with ease, "Silver," he called for the hedgehog's name the moment he arrived, "Are you okay? What did egghead do to you?"
There was no answer.
Silver didn't seem to notice his presence at all in fact, even though Sonic was practically standing right in front of. He was too busy trying to get something off of him. Pulling it, tugging it, scratching at it. It didn't seem to be working.
The thing that stole Silver's attention was a collar. Black in color, with a metallic sheen on it. A red dot in the middle of the surface blinked on and off. It latched into Silver's neck, snuggling it close without room to breathe whatsoever.
Was that the newest tech Eggman had tried to pawn onto Sonic? That's worrying. What did it do, that caused the usually cheerful hedgehog to be this distressed?
As if listening to Sonic's musses, Silver activated his psychokinesis. Intending to crush the blasted choker like how he easily crushed a car on a daily basis. A brief cyan light enveloped the tips of his fingers. There was a spark on the collar. Until—
"AAARRGGHH!"
The thing gave him a shock.
It was long, drawn out, and must've been painful. Sonic was horrified when Silver screamed with such a raw voice, shiver ran down his back. It took an unnecessarily two minutes before it stopped, leaving Silver in a dazed state and furs smoking a bit.
This is dangerous. Eggman had managed to create a tech that could disrupt their power.
"We need to go back to the base," he stood up, grabbing the boy's wrist at the same time. Knowing how nefarious the doctor was, the collar could be laden with traps. So he wanted Tails to see this. Hoping the two-tailed fox could re-engineer the thing and find out what exactly Eggman had put inside of it.
But then with a loud shout of 'NO!', Silver smacked Sonic's hand away and skidded back.
"Silver. What are you—"
Sonic stopped short, his stomach plummeting.
Silver was huddling near the AC unit station, quivering from head to toe. His face was drained of all color. Bright yellow eyes were wide open, pupils turned to pinprick. There was agitation that grew within it. Hopelessness. Utter desperation.
Fear.
Was he...dissociating?
Silver looked spooked. He kept swinging his head to the right, to the left. Upward and backward. He was on guard—too on guard—seeing things that weren't actually there. He tugged on the collar for the nth time. But the result was still the same. The thing was still circling his neck, still constricting his respiration. This situation just became worse and worse and his panicking now rose to the highest degree, "The fire," he muttered with rattling teeth, "The fire—the fire is coming. The fire is coming and it's going to consume us all—"
"My power—I need to use my power—why can't I!" Silver started pawing at the collar. Scraping, clawing, trying to wrench it apart. Sonic felt mounting horror build inside him when the only thing Silver got for this frantic action was a bloodied nail. It tore the gloves and stained his usually pristine white fur, oh no—, "Get it off. Get it—get it off, please—"
"Silver—"
"Walk. Walk—what if I walk? It's—it's going to be hurt but I don't—I can't—," Not listening, or hearing, whatever Sonic was trying to say, he continued muttering, "I—I have to. I have to walk. I—I have to put my feet on the ground or else the fire will—" Silver quickly stood up. Then he fell just as fast. Landing on the rooftop with a loud thud that sounded needlessly hurt, "No. No, how do you do it? Left foot—left—right—right foot? Maybe I have to start on the right foot? No—no, that doesn't sound right. Both—maybe both—"
If Sonic was worried about the apparent hyperventilation, he was now drowning in pure terror at the implication of Silver's stutter.
No. Surely. Surely he didn't—
But Silver is. He didn't lie. Never have the capacity to, with the kind of condition he was in. Sonic watched in muted horror as Silver tried and tried and tried to stand up yet to no avail. It wasn't the loss of balance that made him fall. Nor was it fear that overwhelmed him to the point of extreme trembling. No. He fell like he didn't know how to amble. Like a baby who crawled and tried to stand for the first time, but lost it badly.
Silver the hedgehog—a time-traveling expert who had saved the world over and over again. An idol to the Resistance and children abound—really didn't know how to walk—
(One of his shoes was nowhere to be found)
(Allowing Sonic to see the red, blistered foot. Wrinkled and blackened as if it was submerged in a sea of raging inferno.)
(A/N): How do you walk on Earth that was ravaged by fire? The answer is...you don't.
Okay. I know it was Silver's thing and drawing him while flying would created more dynamic poses. But every time I saw fanarts of him not standing, it got me thinking. Can this boi walk at all? Does he really have to use his psychokinesis power all the time? You're just going to hang out with your friends, you know. You don't have to keep flexing 24/7.
And suddenly, my brain was like 'ANGST TIME GALORE!'
That's how this fic was born~
Sometimes I hate myself :'D
But hey. It's finally an angst fanfic for Silver #evilLaugh
