And so, we reach the very end of this spooky month. With everyone preparing for the scariest holiday of the year, I wanted to share this.
Special thanks to Alvaxerox for helping out on this little origin story for the next generation Mad Hatter. And just to be clear, I am referencing and picturing a specific Arkham character (if not characters, depending how this goes) from the Batman Animated Series. Only because I found him very charming when seeing him for the first time in the show.
No flamed reviews nor fake advertised ones, please. I am very serious. If I catch you posting false advertisements in my stories I will report, delete, and block you! There should be reviews on what you think of the story you are reading only.
Enjoy.
Road To Madness: The Secret Origin of The Next Mad Hatter
Six years ago…
In the dark nights of Gotham City, a small silhouette was running across the streets. It looked like a hoodie kid trying to get away from something...or someone.
This...is me. I know I do not seem much now, but trust me when I say things are about to.
"... I think he went that way!" a male voice echoed.
The young hooded person jumped over a fence and kept running. When looking back, the person tripped to reveal it's a young boy with green eyes and short dirty blonde hair. Practically ten years old.
"Oof! That's smarts," the young boy grunted, scraping his right knee yet got up and continued moving. "I got to lay low somewhere...and fast."
Now you're probably wondering why I'm fleeing. Rest assured, there is a perfectly good explanation.
The boy heard tracker dogs barking. They were smelling his scent, but there was nothing. "The dogs smell nothing." Another male voice said.
"Then, we better look somewhere else. He couldn't be somewhere else, and we need to take him back." The first male voice said, as their footsteps can be heard but faded.
The young boy waited a little longer until he sighed in relief...feeling the pain on his scratched knee again and carefully continued moving forward.
"There's got to be some place for me to hide," he muttered to himself.
It didn't take long for him to notice a park called 'Storybook Land' up ahead.
He quickly crossed the street and made it to the park, and searched around for some where to lay low.
'I can stay around the Alice in Wonderland section until I find a real place to crash,' the young boy said.
As the boy sleeps near a cutout of the Queen of Hearts castle, he waits for the next day to come.
Hours later, the young boy was awoken by loud thunder and realizes it began to rain. He tried to find better cover before getting soaked to the bone.
The boy saw a table set in the middle of the park and ran towards it, hiding under the table, and took the table cloth to cover himself like a blanket.
Yeah, yeah, I know. It's a very sad sight to see a kid like that out in the open surviving on his own. Especially when it's raining. Well, I rather deal with that than go back to where those two guys were chasing me for. Especially with who I managed to come across
Lightning struck again where it startled the boy that caused him to yelp and cover the sheets around him while shivering.
As the lightning struck, the flash of the light showed a shadow. The boy sees the shadow and it was getting closer. As it shows a silhouette, someone was literally walking towards the boy's direction.
Not going to lie. I was scared out of my mind. I thought it could be one of those guys I was running from. Or worse...the Batman here to help them out and return me back where I came from.
The boy stayed quiet and tried not to give away his position. Fear already taking over his body.
And the lightning strikes again, the silhouette got even closer and the boy heard a voice.
"I know you're under there. Come out, I won't bite." The person said. It sounded like a man, but not low and brooding so it wasn't Batman.
Although a little skeptical, the young boy kept the sheet around himself while carefully moving a few inches away from where the silhouette was and took a quick peek behind on who was there.
As the boy took a peek, the lighting flashes and shows a glimpse second of a man with a hat and a creepy smile.
The young boy was startled enough to bang his head and back from under the table. He cried in pain which gave away his position.
"Do not be scared, little one..." The man said, reaching out with his hand.
The young boy moved back a little from that gesture, curling up in the sheets while shaking and shivering up like a leaf.
He then felt something go on his ear. Something...flat but bendy. Like a card.
When that happened, the young boy began to feel sleepy when he wasn't scared anymore. Just relaxed and let himself get carried in the arms of the hat-wearing man before blacking out with a gentle yawn.
"Sleep, for now... my boy." The man said, already leaving out of the rain with the sleeping child in his arms.
Yes, I'm aware that being taken by a mysterious guy in a storm raises a lot of red flags. And you aren't wrong to feel concerned. I knew once I woke up, I would discover what happened wasn't a dream or even a nightmare. Just in between when my life was about to change and becoming a little more...mad.
After what felt like an eternity, the young boy slowly woke up while placing a hand on his head.
"Whoa...I just had a weird dream," the young boy said, slowly getting halfway up to notice some bandages around his scraped-up knee and in a different room he's never recognized. "Or…maybe I'm still having it."
The boy looks outside the window and sees he's at an apartment. Around the middle floor, probably the 5th or 7th floor.
"This is definitely not that horror show hole I escaped from," The boy admitted, scratching his head. "How did I even get here?"
The preteen then noticed some books at a nearby desk. Letting his curiosity get the better of him, he decided to check them out. Most of them where about the studies of the mind with others on advanced technology. One book was a famous English children's book about a girl falling down a rabbit hole and being in another world filled with mad people and extraordinary creatures.
Now, I suppose any normal kid would try to find a way out and not stick around for the same person who brought me here to come back. That would make sense. But, as crazy as it may seem, I didn't want to leave. Instead, I took the opportunity to read the books I found. They interested me a lot. Still do now.
The kid grabbed the books, lied down on top of the bed, and started reading one of them.
The book was 'Alice in Wonderland'. The boy read about Alice's adventures in a world that's backwards. She became friends with people like the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit that works for the Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, and the caterpillar that smokes.
I will admit that the first time I read that book, I was very fascinated with the plot and symbolism behind it. How the main point of the story was not being afraid to explore the unknown. Being curiouser and curiouser.
The boy continued reading. Especially at the part where Alice eats some cake and starts growing big.
Although that is fiction, the boy figured that the cake changing size symbolized either puberty and or favorite sweet treat of the girl who was inspired as the character in the book. He truly enjoyed seeing the psychology behind such a whimsical story.
You probably don't know this, but the author of the following book suffered from a rare neurological disorder that causes strange hallucinations and affects the size of visual objects, which can make the sufferer feel bigger or smaller than they are. This became the main theme of the story. It's one of the main reasons why I enjoyed reading that book...Not to mention it gave me an idea of understanding my 'mystery caretaker'.
Just then, the door opened and someone came in. "Fragest day, you are awake!"
The child nearly jumped when hearing that and lost his train of thought when being engaged reading the book.
"I'm sorry! I didn't mean to take them! I-" the young boy apologized for taking the books, only to take a better look at the guy who came in. "It...It's you. The guy from that stormy night."
"Of course, it's me. And don't worry, it's fine," The Mystery Man replied. "They're just books. I got more copies."
Taking a better look, the guy had an English accent, tanned skin, and dark yellowish autumn hair. He even dressed nicely.
"Oh...uh, thanks," the boy said, putting the book down. "Did you know that each character symbolizes something important? Especially the Mad Hatter?"
"Indeed. Although, my favorite is Alice, and when she met him and joined his friend for a tea party." The man said, pointing at a certain character in the book.
"Can't say I blame you. Alice is the main character exploring her struggles to survive in the confusing world of adults," the young kid explained. "Something we can all relate to."
"Exactly," The man said.
The young boy got off the bed with a small knowing smile. "Although, if you ask me, it's the friends Alice makes that deserve some love. Especially the Mad Hatter. Granted, he represents the unpleasant sides of human nature, but who says that there is not more behind that? May seem mad and harsh with his actions yet has a soft side to a kid in helping out."
"Is that so?" The man asked.
"Yeah. Although, I still wonder why he would choose to help," the kid stated, holding on to one of the books. "What do you think, Jervis?"
The man walked into the light. He was wearing a green suit that was out of style and a big hat. He was Jervis Tetch, AKA...The Mad Hatter.
"You were lost. I gave you shelter. I may be a criminal, but I still have decency towards children," He answered honestly.
"Makes sense. Thanks for helping me back there," the kid said, nodding his head in appreciation while not looking afraid. "I knew it was you the moment I found these books. Neuro-tech and mind control were your style. Also...you wrote your name on the Alice in Wonderland book to confirm my theory more."
"Well, I want it to be my property that no one can steal," Mad Hatter said.
The kid gave another smile, putting the book back on the desk. "How did you manage to afford this? Used one of the chips on the apartment guys to pass through?"
"Clever boy," Mad Hatter replied, very impressed. "And I thought Riddler or Batman was smart."
"And you'd be right. I can never compete with those guys," the kid admitted, folding his arms. "When you're the only kid in an orphanage who has a fascination with psychology and different perspective behaviors of people based on their actions, you can figure out a thing or two."
"Very interesting. You say you're from an orphanage, correct?" Mad Hatter asked.
"Unfortunately," the kid deadpanned. "It's as bad as Arkham Asylum."
"Hmmm..." Jervis started to get lost in thought before getting an idea. "Tell you what. Why don't I return you to the orphanage-?"
"WHAT?!" The boy exclaimed, not liking the idea so far.
"Let me finish," Mad Hatter said, his index finger up. "After I return you to the orphanage, give me a chance to talk to whoever is in charge and ask if I can simply... offer my home to be your home." Mad Hatter suggested. "That is... if you're not too afraid of me."
The boy blinked at this offer. "...You really mean it? Of course, I'm not afraid of you! I mean...yes. Absolutely. It is a deal!"
The two shook hands on the deal…until a realization hit the young boy.
"But wait! Won't you get caught once the head of the Orphanage sees you're the Mad Hatter?" He asked Jervis. "The cops will show up and take you back to Arkham with one phone call. If not Batman coming first."
"I can be... very persuasive." Mad Hatter shows his card. The boy recognized the card. It was the same one that made him go to sleep back at Wonderland Park.
"Oh, yeah...Still, it's big and obvious. People will easily recognize your card once they see it on the Headmaster's ear," the kid pointed out, rubbing his chin in thought. "Once that news catches on, Batman won't be far behind. If we want to pull this off, then we need to keep it super lowkey. So low, that not even the Dark Knight will suspect anything."
...What? Do you think I'd turn down my chance to get away from that Orphanage Prison? I'd rather have a parental figure of an Arkham Maniac than go back there. And I'd do anything to keep it just so. The best way to do that is to be as cunning as Alice. Think outside the box by doing something different and discreet while rolling with the madness.
Later...
The Mad Hatter, incognito, took the boy back to the orphanage. "Remember, boy...You show me who runs the orphanage and I'll tell him I want to adopt you."
"Got it. And I'll be sure to give him an 'apology gift' in order to make it happen," the boy said, giving a small wink on the gift part.
Mad Hatter winks back. "Lead the way..." He said, as he follows the boy.
Nodding, the preteen boy walked forward in going back inside the orphanage and headed towards the Headmaster's office. With Mad Hatter waiting outside until the boy does his part.
I felt dread in every fiber of my being. I was afraid that this plan would fail or get me into more trouble. Even so, I knew I could not run away anymore. I had to be brave...perhaps as brave as that Alice character in the story. It never stopped her from confronting the Queen of Hearts. I just had to take the risk.
The young boy took a deep breath and opened the door to see Headmaster Radomski already sitting on his desk.
"Ah, Henry. I was wondering when you would be back," Headmaster Radomski said, a devious grin showing. "Come to take your punishment like an obedient little boy? Or remark once again with that unnecessary educated tongue of yours?"
"Actually...I came back to say..." the boy named Henry started, clutching his hands to try not to show any fear while walking forward. "I returned to apologize for sneaking off the Orphanage and, to prove how sorry I am, wanted to give you this."
Henry presented a small gift. It was basic yet very decent.
"This ain't a prank, right?" Headmaster Radomski asked, feeling skeptical.
"No, sir. I have said some things and ran away from this place, but pranking is not my Forte," Henry stated. "You know that. Since I felt guilty of it, I thought of giving this present to show you that I will never disobey your rules ever again. I'll even take my punishment as full responsibility for my actions."
"Very well, then." Headmaster Radomski took the present. He opened it and inside was a card. "Oooohhh, a gift card?"
"Yep. On the vintage clothes store you like," Henry stated. "It's all yours to use for later."
Headmaster Radomski grinned a little. "I... appreciate it." He said. "Thank you."
"You're welcome," Henry replied, seeing the Headmaster place the card in his upper pocket jacket.
This was the moment of truth.
Someone knocked on the door of the office. "Come in." Headmaster Radomski said.
The door opened to reveal a disguised Jervis Tetch aka Mad Hatter. He had his hair slicked back, a fake mustache, and dressed like a fancy business man.
"Good evening, Headmaster. My name is Charlie Lewis and I am here to adopt one of your finest lads," he announced, going further in the office.
"You are? Well, I can give you a tour of our finest kids." Headmaster Radomski said, getting up from his desk. "They are fully disciplined, follow me."
Henry took his leave to get to position...still praying in his mind that this plan working.
Jervis/Charlie followed Headmaster Radomski while looking at the orphans play, learn, and some quiver. "The kids are pretty much nice and peaceful children. Take a look at them and see who you want to parent." The headmaster said.
The disguised Hatter quietly looked around until seeing Henry acting naturally while reading a book.
"Dear Headmaster, what can you tell me about that young boy over there at the corner?" Jervis/Charlie asked, directing his attention to Henry from a distance.
"Oh, that's Henry. He always has a habit of running away from this place. Even from those who really want to give him a home." The headmaster said. "I tried everything, but he doesn't seem to like it here. And he keeps making it worse for himself."
"I see...Perhaps he needs a chance to get to know the right parental guardian for him," Jervis/Charlie reasoned, walking over to the young kid to chat with him away from earshour of the Headmaster. "How are you holding up, my boy?" He whispered.
"Like my heart is running as fast as the White Rabbit being late to the Queen of Hearts' castle duties," Henry responded, lowering his book to act like he's seen him for the first time.
"Ah, yes. It was a very important date for him." Jervis/Charlie said.
"I'm hoping this adoption date works out or else it's off with both our heads," Henry stated, still trying to play it cool.
"Trust me, it will." Jervis/Charlie said, winking at Henry while going back to the Headmaster. "Mr. Radomski, I have made my decision."
"Really? Then, who will you pick?" Headmaster Radomski asked, as Jervis/Charlie points at Henry. "You want to adopt Henry? Seriously?"
"Yes. He seems to be a smart child who is seeking the right guardian to help him through the struggles of life," Jervis/Charles explained. "I believe I would benefit him as much as he will benefit me."
"I do not know. Three families brought him back because he ran away from them." Headmaster Radomski said, unsure of the offer.
"I see...It is possible that Henry did not feel comfortable in being with a family that just picked him out of the blue," Jervis/Charles said. "Perhaps we should let the boy decide if he's interested in staying with me or not, before getting ahead of ourselves. Have him know me for ten minutes in your office and we'll see what happens."
"He'll run away from you, too." Headmaster Radomski said. "I can't trust him."
"Then, you just have to trust me," Jervis/Charles stated, not backing down. "I guarantee you that Henry will not run away and make the choice in whether he wants to be in my care or not."
"I'm sorry, but I don't trust him. And I don't trust you," Headmaster Radomski said. "Have you had any experience with children?"
"You can say that," Jervis/Charlie said, seeing that is his cue to work his magic by tapping on his flat hat to put on. "Now, let's try this again..."
Headmaster Radomski's eyes then widened. "I want to adopt Henry. Is that okay?" Jervis/Charlie asked again.
"Yes. It is okay. You can adopt him. Come back to my office and we'll sign the papers." Headmaster Radomski replied, like a drone.
"Good," Jervis/Charles said, already following the Headmaster and gave a wink to Henry on that.
Henry smiled, knowing he should go pack his things.
I think you all get the idea of what happens next. Or you haven't figured it out yet. That gift card I gave to the Headmaster earlier had one of Mad Hatter's mind-controlling chips carefully placed inside. Since I had a feeling Headmaster Radomski would not trust me or Jervis about this adoption plan, some persuasion had to be done.
And just so you know, those three families I ran away from were not exactly my choice nor any cool with me. Always thinking they were better than anyone else and trying to change me from being myself. These people were as bad as the guys from the Orphanage. As if I'd go and stay with a snooty family that treats me like some servant boy.
Later...
After signing some paperwork, Jervis/Charlie now had full custody of Henry. "Congratulations, Henry. Mr. Lewis is now your guardian." Headmaster Radomski said. "Mr. Lewis, he's all yours now."
"Thanks, Headmaster Radomski. I think I'm going to like being part of Mr. Lewis' family," Henry replied. "Although, before we leave...I was hoping to hear you address me by my actual name."
Jervis/Charles looked over at the child in slight curiosity. "Oh? Henry isn't your real name? Then what, pray tell, is it?"
The young boy gave a small smile before answering. "Harry. It's Harry. The Headmaster thought it was a dumb name and preferred 'Henry' as a more sophisticated name for a sophisticated family. Pretty stupid, huh?"
"Harry...That is a better name." Jervis/Charlie said.
"Thanks...It's nice to finally have someone appreciate my real name," Harry stated, looking over to the Headmaster.
"Take care and good luck...Harry Lewis," Headmaster Radomski said.
Harry smiled at that, already taking his leave with Jervis. "Much obliged."
And that was the day I became Harry T. Lewis. Nephew/Son of Jervis Tetch aka Mad Hatter. This is just the beginning.
