Chapter 6: The Demon of the Mist
Arc: The Land of Waves
--
Naruto and Sasuka stood on guard, their eyes locked on the masked figure before them. The tension in the air was palpable, and the soft rustling of the leaves around them only amplified the eerie silence.
Naruto shifted slightly, trying to size up their opponent. "Who the hell are you?" he asked, his voice steady but laced with tension.
The masked figure didn't answer immediately. Instead, they took a step forward, the twin swords in their hands gleaming under the fading sunlight. "Your deaths," they said coldly.
Before either of them could react, the masked ninja charged forward at a blinding speed. Sasuka's Sharingan spun to life, tracking the enemy's movements. In a swift motion, she blocked one of the swords with her kunai, the force of the clash sending sparks flying.
Naruto summoned a handful of shadow clones, surrounding the masked figure. "Now you're outnumbered!" he declared, but before his clones could attack, the figure moved with inhuman precision, cutting through the clones with ease.
Sasuka gritted her teeth, her Sharingan predicting the figure's movements just in time to dodge another strike. "This guy… he's fast," she muttered, her heart racing.
Naruto growled in frustration. "Damn it! I can't land a hit!" His clones kept being destroyed faster than he could summon them.
Suddenly, the figure jumped back, creating distance between them. They raised their swords and took a defensive stance. "Not bad for genin," the ninja said, their voice still emotionless. "But you're no match for me."
At that moment, Kakashi appeared in a blur, landing in front of his students. "That's enough," he said calmly, his own kunai drawn. "You must be Zabuza Momochi, the Demon of the Mist."
The figure removed their mask, revealing a man with sharp, predatory features and cold, calculating eyes. "Kakashi of the Sharingan," Zabuza said with a dark smile. "I've been waiting for a challenge like this."
Naruto's eyes widened. "Wait… you know him, Kakashi-sensei?"
Kakashi didn't take his eyes off Zabuza. "He's one of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, an elite group of assassins. We're dealing with a much higher-level opponent now."
Sasuka's grip on her kunai tightened, and she took a step closer to Naruto. "He's that dangerous?"
Kakashi nodded, his expression serious. "Very. Stay sharp, both of you."
Zabuza's grin widened, his bloodlust palpable. "I'll enjoy killing you, Kakashi. And your little students too." Without warning, he formed a series of hand seals, and the temperature around them seemed to drop as a thick mist began to roll in, obscuring their vision.
"The Hidden Mist Jutsu," Kakashi muttered, his eye narrowing. "Stay close to me."
The mist quickly thickened, and soon, Naruto and Sasuka could barely see more than a few feet in front of them. The air felt heavy, and a deep sense of unease settled over the clearing.
Naruto's heartbeat quickened as he tried to sense Zabuza's presence. "Damn it… I can't see anything!"
"Be calm, Naruto," Sasuka said, her voice steady despite the tension. "We just need to—"
Before she could finish, Zabuza's voice echoed through the mist, cold and taunting. "Can you hear it? The sound of your own death approaching?"
Suddenly, a blade came hurtling toward them from the mist. Naruto barely had time to react before Kakashi intercepted it with his kunai, deflecting the blow. "Don't let your guard down for a second!" Kakashi warned, his Sharingan now fully revealed beneath his headband.
Naruto's mind raced. Think, Naruto. How do we fight something we can't see?
Then, an idea hit him. "I've got a plan!" he whispered to Sasuka. "Cover me for a second."
Sasuka gave him a sharp nod. "Make it quick."
Naruto formed a hand sign and summoned another wave of shadow clones, sending them charging blindly into the mist. Zabuza's chuckle echoed around them. "More clones? You're just wasting your chakra, boy."
But Naruto wasn't done. As his clones dispersed into the mist, he closed his eyes and focused inward. "Kurama," he whispered, "I need your help."
Inside his subconscious, Kurama stirred. "You want me to lend you my chakra, brat?"
"Just a little," Naruto replied, his voice serious. "I need to enhance my senses."
Kurama's eyes gleamed with amusement. "Fine. But don't get cocky."
A surge of energy flooded Naruto's body, and his senses sharpened instantly. He could feel the chakra in the air, even through the mist. His eyes snapped open, and for the first time, he could sense Zabuza's presence.
"There!" Naruto shouted, pointing toward the right. Sasuka, trusting Naruto's instinct, flung several shuriken in the direction he indicated.
There was a loud clash as the shuriken collided with something metallic, followed by Zabuza's voice, now slightly less amused. "So, you're more than just an idiot after all."
Kakashi took advantage of the opening Naruto created. He shot forward in a blur, aiming straight for Zabuza's exposed position. Their kunai clashed in a flurry of strikes, each one more powerful than the last.
Naruto grinned. "We've got this!"
But just as Kakashi seemed to be gaining the upper hand, Zabuza's body dissolved into water, revealing it was only a water clone. "Too slow," Zabuza's voice whispered from behind them, his blade swinging down toward Naruto and Sasuka.
Kakashi moved with lightning speed, blocking the blade just in time. "I won't let you harm my students," he said, his voice calm but deadly serious.
Zabuza grinned. "You're good, Kakashi. But how long can you protect them?"

Flashback
As Kakashi blocked Zabuza's blade, his mind briefly flashed back to the night of the Uchiha Massacre, a night he would never forget. He had been on a mission far from the village when it happened, but when he returned to the carnage, he felt the same helplessness he was feeling now.
The bodies of the Uchiha clan, scattered across the streets, the sight of Sasuka and Itachi's despair… It haunted him. And now, standing between his students and a deadly foe, Kakashi felt that same drive to protect them, no matter the cost.
I failed to protect them once… I won't fail again.

Back in the present, Kakashi pushed Zabuza back with a powerful counterattack. "You won't win this fight, Zabuza."
Zabuza wiped the blood from his lip and chuckled. "We'll see about that."
