Kouga rubbed the back of his head. "Hate to break it to ya, Kags, but that's the whole point of findin' a mate. Humans do it for money and prestige and shit."
Kagome clicked her tongue. "Everyone's capable of bettering themselves. Especially for someone they truly care about." She searched her brain for something that would make him understand. "Would you give up your title for me? If I wanted to travel the world, just us, would you let someone else rule your pack and come with me?"
She saw the conflict in his eyes, felt the hesitation in his aura. "That ain't fair, Kags."
"No, it's not." She sighed but kept her shoulders back. "Would I ever ask you to do that? Of course not, because I know how much your pack means to you. However," she cut in before he could, holding up a hand to halt his response. "My point is that you have to be willing to make those kinds of sacrifices for your mate. Your partner."
It was a foreign word to him. Even with the differences between species, there was still a disconnect between those with power and those without. With youkai, it didn't matter which side had it as long as the mating created more. But Kagome had never cared about power.
"You have to be willing to improve, Kouga-kun. In all the years I've known you, not even your proposal has changed. You keep using the same words and giving me the same promises. I can't accept that." He still looked confused, which just proved her point.
"I don't get it. Any other demon would've been swooning by now."
