Origami's POV
Ugh, my head... What happened?
I remember coming home from school, and then I see my parents dead...
The memory jolts me wide awake. That's right! My parents! That woman killed them and then knocked me out with something!
I try to get up, but I couldn't move my arms and legs. I look and see that I'm actually strapped to a chair.
"Ah, you're awake." I hear a voice and look to see... a very scary man with dark ash blonde hair wearing a black business suit with a white tie. He looked at me with dark sharp blue eyes, as if a knife was used to cut a slit on his face. He looked around 30 years old, but gave off the impression of an experienced veteran, similar to the woman that killed my parents.
Speaking of, I can actually see that same woman standing close to him, which makes me glare at both of them.
"Are you that woman's boss? Did you hire her to kill my parents?"
The man smirks at me. "I will answer both questions. Yes, I am indeed Ellen's boss. My name is Isaac Ray Peram Wescott, and I am the CEO of Deus Ex Machina Industries."
That name... My parents told me about him. He had been knighted for his help in producing the Realizers, and his company, DEM, is the most influential corporation in the world and the main provider of Realizers.
"As for what happened to your parents, killing them was the price they paid for not complying."
"Why!?" I shout in anger. "Why do you want me so bad that you think killing my parents was worth it!?"
"You should watch your tone, little girl." The woman, Ellen, warns me with a dangerous tone, but I ignore it and continue glaring at them.
"It's fine, Ellen. She's suffering from seeing her parents' corpses after all." Wescott brushes it off. "Now, you are Origami Tobiichi, correct? The young girl who was saved by the Water Spirit [Hermit]?"
[Hermit]. Is that what he wants? "What do you want with my savior?" I ask him.
"Oh, it's nothing personal. DEM's job is to hunt down Spirits, but I figured it would be simpler to have her come to us." They want to capture [Hermit]!?
"But why!? She's not a bad Spirit! She stopped the Tengu Fire from becoming worse!"
"A Spirit is a Spirit. It doesn't matter to us what their alignment is. We will detain them." Ellen says without care.
I couldn't believe it. They wanted to take my savior just because of what she is. "That's not right!" I shout at them. "Even if your efforts are a great boon to humanity, it might be possible to make peace with some Spirits!"
Wescott looks at me with surprise for a good minute... and then just laughs. He laughs loudly, and to be honest, it's making me scared.
"Ah, such young naivety." He says as he begins to calm down. "Who said I was doing this for humanity?"
"Huh?" Now I was confused.
"Ike?" Ellen's even looking at him with surprise on her face. What's going on?
Wescott looks at me with a dangerous smile. "Allow me to tell you something, Origami Tobiichi. The true reason why I'm after the Spirits... is because I desire their power."
My eyes widen. "Wh-What?"
"The Spacequakes, the Tengu Fire, the clash between [Hermit] and [Angel]... You've seen their powers for yourself." He spread his arms wide as if he was accepting something. "Such destructive powers... I wish to make them all mine!"
He wants to take the Spirits' powers!? "But doing that would mean you would also become a Spirit! You would be betraying humanity."
He looks at me with a smirk that felt malicious. "Betraying them? I suppose you may call it that. I call it returning the favor. They sought to wipe out all magicians, so I shall do the same to them."
"Y-You want to wipe out humanity?" I ask, horrified by the information. He wants to use the power of the Spirits to destroy humanity! "That's... horrible. Evil!"
Wescott chuckled. "I'm not 'evil'. I'm simply beyond common morality. The true evil are the humans who oppose me." I was now completely terrified of this man. No, he is no man, but a monster disguising himself as a human.
I then faintly hear the sound of gunfire coming from outside the building, and Wescott and Ellen could hear it too. "Oh my. It seems [Hermit] has already found us somehow." Wescott hummed in amusement.
"To think she would willingly come to us... It seems she truly values this girl." Ellen says.
Wescott looks at me with a cruel smirk. "Be happy, Origami Tobiichi. You get to see your savior once again."
I really wanted to cry right now. [Hermit] is in danger, all because of me...
Third POV
"There she is!"
"Capture her!"
"Out of my way!" Yoshino shouts as she sends an energy slash at the DEM Wizards, knocking them away.
When she and Kurumi arrived a short distance away from the base, the plan was simple. Kurumi and her clones would cause a ruckus outside to attract DEM's attention, and Yoshino would infiltrate the base to find Origami and rescue her.
There were still a few Wizards left in the building, but she could easily force her way through them, but she still needs to reserve most of my strength for when she inevitably fight Ellens.
Normally, it would be difficult searching through such a tall building, but her Pure Reiryoku also allows her to sense other mana signatures, and she sensed the biggest one on this floor.
She eventually come to a door and stop. 'I can sense two powerful mana signatures behind this door. Wescott and Ellen are most likely behind it, which means Origami must be too.' She thought.
Taking a deep breath, she walks forward as the doors open, revealing Origami strapped in a chair, with Wescott standing next to her.
"[Hermit]!" Origami cries out when she sees the Spirit that saved her last year. Her eyes looked both relieved...and scared.
"You've arrived." Wescott smirks at her arrival. "Welcome, [Hermit]."
She walks forward before stopping a fair distance away, glaring at Wescott. "You know, for someone who was knighted by humanity, you sure don't act like one. You were willing to take a hostage, just because of her connection to me."
"Yes, well, needs must when you run a business like mine. You managed to keep yourself hidden until the Tengu Fire, so I decided this would be faster." He casually shrugs, before putting a hand on the chair holding Origami with a smirk. "You want to save this girl, don't you? Come get her. She's right here."
Yoshino stared. It's obvious that he's planning something. Him inviting her to retrieve Origami... It's almost like...
Yes. When Shido went to save Tohka, Wescott pulled this same trap on him.
Which means Ellen is waiting to ambush her.
"You must think I'm stupid." She says to him. "Did you really think I would come into the same room as you, and not think that you would have your Strongest Wizard close by?" The moment she finishes my question, she fires an energy slash up at the ceiling, where she sensed Ellen's mana.
Seeing that her sneak attack wouldn't work, Ellen evades the attack and comes down to strike Yoshino, but the Spirit parries her attack and counter with an upward slash, which she dodges by flying up before landing in front of Origami.
"Not bad, [Hermit]." Says Ellen Mathers, donning her Realizer. "You're more aware of your surroundings than I thought." She smirks at her. "Still, coming here just to save a young girl, you must be willing to throw your life away."
Yoshino glares in response, pointing Yoshinon at her. "I don't know what your planning with Origami, but I won't let you harm her."
"If you want the girl, you'll have to get through me." Ellen points Pendragon back at her. "Unfortunately for you, I'm on a different level compared to [Angel]. You cannot win."
"We won't know until we actually fight." Yoshino challenges her, knowing she'll take it.
She smirks. "You're actually going to fight me? I suppose it's commendable that you won't run away." She takes a stance. "But, I'm going to show you just how outclassed you are."
Yoshino tightens her grip on Yoshinon. "Get ready, Yoshinon. This fight is gonna really test us!"
"Yeah! Let's give her a taste of humble pie!" Yoshinon shouts.
"Shiryon!" A whirlwind of ice forms around Yoshino as she summons her Shiryon Armor. Now donned in her own armor, she assumes her battle stance.
The two stood in a standoff for a solid minute, waiting for the other to make a move. "What's wrong, [Hermit]? For all your bravado, you're too scared to come at me?" Ellen taunts, breaking her stance to hold her arms out mockingly. "Come on and hit me. I'm wide open."
"You really are quite arrogant, aren't you?" Yoshino asks.
Suddenly, blue strings appeared and attached themselves onto Ellen before she could react. "What the!?" She nearly curses as the strings lock her in place.
"Oh?" Wescott says, raising an eyebrow in interest.
"And arrogance can be taken advantage of." Yoshino finishes. Focusing her power onto the strings, ice begins to form on Ellen where they're connected.
"Trying to beat me with trickery? Well, it won't work!" She says as she uses her Territory to shatter the ice and break free from the strings. She then rushes at Yoshino and slashes with Pendragon while she slashes back with Yoshinon, their blades clashing as they fought as if it were a dance.
The moment the two broke away from each other, Yoshino slams the pole end of her scythe onto the ground, making a water geyser suddenly rise up below Ellen and knock her into the air. She flies up in pursuit and slash her, but Ellen recovers and does a backflip to dodge and get behind her.
"Got you!" She shouts as she swings down, but Yoshino's body turns into mist, making the sword harmlessly pass through her. "What!?" The mist quickly moves away and Ellen uses her Territory to try and stop the mist and force Yoshino to solidify, but to her surprise, the mist sort of shrugs it off and keeps moving.
The mist moves behind Ellen and reforms as Yoshino attacks her, and Ellen quickly refocuses her Territory to block, but the impact still sends her flying into the wall behind her. "Chilling Breath!" Yoshino takes a deep breath and blow cold air at her as she uses her Territory to block once again. However, to Ellen's surprise, she feels her Territory begin to fail.
'What is this? We know that [Hermit] can dampen and freeze Territories, but this is more than just a freeze effect!' Ellen thought, not knowing that Yoshino used a bit of Pure Reiryoku for the attack. Gritting her teeth, Ellen reinforces her Territory to push the attack back enough to fly away and dodge it.
Wanting to gain the upper hand, the Wizard releases multiple slash waves from her sword, which Yoshino blocks with a shield of ice. Ellen then flies above Yoshino to attack her from above, but to her shock, her blade is stopped by a field of rainbow energy surrounding Yoshino.
"What is this!?" Ellen shouts in outrage. "How can a Spirit form a Territory!?"
"Interesting." Wescott hums as he watches from the sidelines Yoshino slashes Ellen away, and then focuses her power into her scythe, making it glow with that same rainbow energy. He can't help but feel that the energy felt familiar to him.
Yoshino slashes at Ellen's Pendragon, knocking her back, and then flies up to slash at Ellen again, who tries to block with her Territory.
However, due to it being empowered by Pure Reiryoku, the scythe actually causes the Territory to shatter.
"What!?" Ellen shouts in shock, staggering from her Territory being easily destroyed. Even Wescott was surprised by this outcome.
Taking advantage of her opponent's broken defenses, Yoshino forms a large clawed gauntlet on her left hand and nails Ellen with an uppercut slash, the attack also creating a small tornado of ice that launches her into the air.
The Wizard hits the ground and rolls back onto her feet with a grunt, looking at Hermit. "I must say. No one's ever been able to even touch me." She praises Yoshino.
"You must have faced some weak opponents then!" Yoshinon gives a snarky reply.
Ellen stands up and cracks her neck. "Perhaps your victory against [Angel] wasn't entirely a fluke." She fixes her stance. "Regardless, I am the Strongest Wizard. Once I get serious, no one can defeat me! Not even a Spirit!"
Yoshino narrows her eyes at Ellen. She knows Ellen is no slouch in a fight, and admittedly, if it wasn't for the Pure Reiryoku Mio gave her, there was no way she could keep up, let alone push her like this. Not to mention she has yet to use Rhongomiad.
She needs to end this, and quickly.
'Hold on, maybe I can convert my Reiryoku into Pure Reiryoku.' She thinks, and decides to give it a try.
"In that case, I should stop holding back, too." Yoshino says as she straightens her stance and closes her eyes to focus.
Ellen frowns, a bit curious as to what Hermit plans to do. To her surprise, she sees a blue glow form on the Spirit's chest where her heart... no, her Sephira Crystal is, as blue streams of Reiryoku flow in and out of her.
"Oh?" Wescott is also very curious as to what the Spirit's plan was, and to everyone's surprise (including Origami's, who was also watching the fight), some of the blue Reiryoku turns into rainbow Reiryoku.
Shockwaves of rainbow Reiryoku soon erupt from Yoshino, and a rainbow aura of Pure Reiryoku surrounds her.
Ellen and Wescott were surprised by what they were seeing. Whatever Hermit pulled off, it clearly wasn't Inverse, but the Reiryoku coming from her felt powerful, and for some reason, familiar.
The Spirit opens her eyes, and to Wescott's shock, her eyes had changed color, becoming a silvery-white that he would recognize even after having not seen it for so long.
"So that's it." Wescott whispers, his excitement growing. "You have given this one your power. This has become very interesting." Origami looks up at him, worried by how he was smiling.
In a stunning show of speed, Yoshino moves in front of Ellen before she can react and unleashes a storm of ice around her, knocking the Wizard into the air. Ellen quickly recovers, but then Yoshino performs a triple spin slash with Yoshinon, forcing her to block, but the third slash had notably more power behind it and she found herself knocked back a fair distance.
Ellen uses her Territory to rebound back and slash at Yoshino, but the Spirit parries with an upward slash, and then immediately follows up by slamming the pole end of her scythe into the ground, causing a pillar of water to rise from below Ellen, carrying her into the air.
The Wizard slashes with Pendragon to dispel the water, and then sends a three slash waves in retaliation, but Yoshino counters by sending a single slash of rainbow energy that tore through Ellen's, forcing her to dodge, but then the Spirit rushes at her and slashes her. Ellen blocks the attack, but the unexpected power behind the slash makes her stumble, leaving her open to a series of four slashes, before finishing with a strong diagonal slash that knocks the Wizard to the ground.
Ellen growls in frustration as she stand up, only for strings to suddenly rise from below and attach to her body. "Again!?" She grunts as she was once again trapped. She forms her Territory to once again break the strings, but finds herself still unable to break free. "Why won't they break!?" She shouts in frustration, before noticing that the strings were now multicolored instead of blue. These strings were powered by Pure Reiryoku.
With her opponent held in place, Yoshino holds Yoshinon up on her shoulders, the blade end facing Ellen. "Shinigami of Pure Mist." She says, and her body turns into mist and circles around Ellen.
The Wizard refocuses her Territory to try and keep the mist away, but as it circles around her, the Pure Reiryoku from both the strings and the mist causes it to fizzle out. "No!" Ellen gasps as she was left wide open. The mist rapidly closes in on her, and she feels herself getting cut over and over, lacerations forming all around her body, and then it all ends with a powerful slash right across her stomach, dispersing the mist and leaving a big gash on her stomach.
The strings then finally dissappear, allowing Ellen to fall to her knees as Yoshino reforms in front of her.
"NYAHAHA! Not so tough now, are ya?" Yoshinon cackles at the downed Wizard.
"You..." Ellen snarls as she glares at Yoshino with rising anger. Never has she felt so humiliated until now! How could she, the Strongest Wizard, be losing against a B-Class Spirit!? It shouldn't be possible!
She shakily rises to her feet and was about to bring out Rhongomyiad, but then they heard someone clapping.
"Remarkable! Truly remarkable, [Hermit]!" Wescott applauds Yoshino.
"Ike?" Ellen voices her surprise.
"Your power was greater than even I expected! Never did I think anyone could overpower Ellen like this!" He continues praising Yoshino, who simply looked at him.
There was a whirring sound as the glass wall that separated Wescott and Origami from the battle was raised, and then the straps holding Origami to the chair opened up. "Well, I quite enjoyed what I saw, so I'll let you have the girl for real this time." The three females in the room look at him with varying levels of surprise. "Go on, little girl. Your savior is waiting." He gestures to Origami.
Not wanting to waste anymore time, Origami runs up and hugs Yoshino. "Thank you." She whispers, tears forming in her eyes. "Thank you so much."
Yoshino wraps her free arm around Origami to return the hug. "It's okay. You're safe now." She says softly.
"Alright! Now let's get out of this joint!" Yoshinon cheers.
Yoshino nods and looks at Origami. "Hold on to me, okay?" Origami nods, and Yoshino fires a blast of rainbow energy at the wall, blasting a hole through it. Dispelling her scythe, she holds Origami tightly and flies out the building through the hole.
Ellen watches the two leave as Ike walks up to her. "Why did you let them leave?" She questions him. "I could've won with Rhongomyiad."
"I doubt it." Wescott replies. Ellen was shocked to hear him doubt her power. "[Hermit] had you on the back foot, Ellen. Even if you did use Rhongomyiad, she could've easily evaded or even countered it. Especially since she was using her power."
Ellen caught the emphasis on 'her' and look at him with wide eyes. "You mean...!"
Wescott smirked. "It seems that she is very interested in Hermit, enough that she would bless her with her power." He looks out the hole in the direction the Spirit left. "I'm curious just how far she will grow."
Ellen also looks out the hole, but instead of curiosity, her mind was filled with vengeance. "Enjoy your victory, [Hermit]. Next time, I will have your head, and Ike will have your power!"
Yoshino's POV
After getting a safe distance away from the DEM building, I gently land on the ground and let go of Origami. Closing my eyes, I cancel the Reiryoku conversion, and the rainbow aura fades away.
"You're amazing!" Origami exclaims with a starry-eyed expression. "I was so worried when you started to fight Ellen, but the way you handled her was incredible!" I can't help but giggle at her excitement. "And that new form looked so beautiful! What's it called!?"
I take a moment to think about it. That form I used in the latter half of the fight was achieved by converting my Reiryoku into Pure Reiryoku. However, I wasn't able to convert it fully, just enough that my Reiryoku and Pure Reiryoku were at an even 50:50, which triggered the transformation.
That said, it was still a transformation made possible thanks to the Pure Reiryoku given to me by Mio, the Spirit of Origin. Yes, that's it.
"Origin Mode." I decide.
"Origin Mode, eh?" I hear Kurumi from behind me and turn to see her emerge from the shadows. "I suppose that would be the most fitting name for it."
"Who are you?" Origami asks. She looked a little tense, so I put a hand on her shoulder.
"It's fine, Origami." I assure her. "She's a friend. She helped me save you."
Origami looks at Kurumi with surprise. "Really? So then you're also a Spirit?"
"That's right." Kurumi smiles and bows. "I'm glad that you're alright, Origami-san."
Origami smiles back. "Yeah. Thank you for saving me." She thanks us, but then she suddenly gasps loudly. "That's right! Wescott! That man is dangerous! He wants to steal your powers to destroy humanity!"
That wasn't really news to either me or Kurumi, but we still frown. "I figured that was the case. He wasn't all that bothered by the fact I beat his best." I say.
"So, he's playing humanity's savior just to bring their demise. Should've expected as much." Kurumi voices her opinion.
"That man is a monster. We have to do something!" Origami urges.
I shake my head. "Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do for now. Wescott was knighted by the government for his accomplishments. Humanity sees him as a hero. Even if you know his true nature, no one would believe you."
"She's right." Kurumi agrees with me. "If anything, you would be seen with disgust, thinking that your trying to slander the CEO of the biggest Realizer-producing company, or worse hated as a terrorist."
Origami slumps, knowing that we were right. I place a hand on her shoulder, making her look back up at me. "Don't worry, Origami. Wescott will get what's coming to him." I tell her. "Your parents will be avenged. I promise you."
My words cheer her up and she smiles. "You're right. Thank you, [Hermit]."
I smile back. "We're friends now, so call me Yoshino. Yoshino Himekawa." She looked surprised that I said we were friends, but smiles happily and hugs me.
"I suppose that also includes me as well." Kurumi giggles. "Kurumi Tokisaki. Pleased to make your acquaintance."
"Don't forget Yoshinon!" Yoshino materializes overhead and announces her presence, and the three of us giggle at her antics.
After we saved Origami from school, we then had to address the problem of where she would live. Luckily, we met someone who could and, and to my surprise, it was Hanakai, the same AST Captain that had appeared during the Tengu Fire. She said that she decided to quit the AST, as my efforts at the time gave her a new outlook on Spirits, and told us that her full name was Miyoi Hanakai.
We told her about Origami's situation as well as what we learned about Wescott, and she was more than happy that she quit now, and she was also happy to become Origami's legal guardian. She even allowed me and Kurumi to live with them, which was very nice of her. It was about time I got a damn roof over my head.
Kurumi, however, declined, saying that two Spirits living with a former AST Captain could draw too much suspicion, which was a valid point, especially since she's quite infamous as the Worst Spirit. Though, after my battle with Ellen, I might just become infamous in my own right. So, she went off to do her own thing. I asked her before she left if she planned to find her friend, but she simply smiled and said "I will find her once the time is right." I guess she plans to follow canon until a certain point, and then go look for Sawa in the Neighboring World. That's fine, as this way, Mio won't be too suspicious.
Miyoi is actually a teacher in Raizen High, which was Shido's school, and she was able to get Origami enrolled there as a student, so I'm usually the one left alone in the house.
I check the date on my phone. It is now April 10th. It's only a matter of time.
*BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR*
And right at that moment, the Spacequake alarm blares, signaling the arrival of a Spirit, the one who would be called Tohka Yatogami.
Canon has begun.
And that's the end of the Prologue!
While Ellen may have more experience than Yoshino, the Spirit had a variety of skills to make up for it. But more importantly, Yoshino had Pure Reiryoku, which was the key to her victory, allowing her to disrupt or outright destroy Ellen's Territory and hit her for unblocked damage.
Thanks to this, Origami has been successfully rescued, and a friendship has been formed between the two of them. Let's not forget Yoshinon and Kurumi as well.
Now, as we finally enter canon, allow me to clarify somethings. I'm only going to be writing scenes that have been effected by the changes. Some will be slight, some will be more noticeable. There may also be more frequently POV changes to show these changes.
Oh, and if you like listening to music during battle scenes, I personally like "Sonic Frontiers - Take It All" by Zakkujo. The man makes great music and someone even made a revisted version, which is the one I listened to while writing the battle scene.
With that said, see you next chapter!
