A loud groan filled the home of the Valkyrie queen, in which woke the Goddess up from her book reading. A chuckle filled her living room as she stood up and walked down the hallway towards her bedroom. Opening the light crystal blue door, she entered her bedroom. Her bedroom wasn't spartan nor was it completely lavish. There wasn't too many decorations nor were the walls painted an extravagant color. The walls and ceiling were painted tan, her floor was a dark red carpet. She had a long dresser that was about waist height pressed against the wall directly next to the door, with a taller and thinner dresser next to that one. The long dresser had a small television, with several strange looking antenna attached. It was a human television. The tall dresser had a small blanket on top, with a few knickknacks. One of which was a statue of her late husband, Óðr, Odr, Od, depending on the translation of his name. The others were a replica of her sword, a replica of her wings without her attached to them, as well as a book on top. The bed was against the wall across the room from the dressers. It was a California King sized bed on a dark maple wood frame. Large poles of the same wood ran up at the four corners and held up a canopy. The canopy was a crystal blue silk sheet that was translucent, which meant that it wasn't a clear picture behind but you could see rough shapes. There was a bathroom in the corner to the left of the dressers when facing them. There was also a window on the wall opposite of the bathroom, meaning to the right of the door. The window had a view of the rivers and lakes of Asgard.
Standing over the bed, looking down, Freya stared at Issei who was groaning in pain. The fourteen year old human teenager, just got drunk for the first time and was now having a massive hangover, which is something that he's never experienced.
"Sounds like you are having a fun time. What did we learn?"
"That bright lights, loud sounds and an annoying Valkyrie are terrible in the morning." Issei grumbled, obviously not a fan of dealing with the Valkyrie Queen today. Freya grinned at him.
"Oh? Is that so? WELL, I THINK IT'S TIME TO GET UP." Freya said, increasing the volume of her voice which sent Issei into another loud groaning fit, plugging his ears.
"Ah! Can't you go bother someone else?!" Issei demanded. Freya laughed.
"Nope, I've emptied out my entire day just to bother you." Freya said cheerfully. "Now get up and lets get some water in you."
"Don't you have some sort of magic that'll remove my hangover."
"Well sure, but that won't teach you anything." Freya said with a smirk. "You have some life lessons to learn here."
"Like what? Not trust the Valkyries?"
"Stop acting like a child." Freya scolded, her voice no longer playful but serious her arms crossed. "Just because you don't get your way doesn't mean you can be a jerk about things. Now get out of bed and come get some breakfast." She said, turning and walking away. Before she was out the door, Issei glared at her.
"I wish I was dead." Issei muttered to himself. Freya heard him and was about to retort but before either of them could say a word, Issei's right eye lit up with a deathly icy blue and a portal opened up in front of the bed, facing him. The portal facing Issei had an image of an icy landscape, where the skies were dark and there was no sun. It was a wasteland. The portal would then grab Issei using some sort of magic, lift him out of the bed. "FREYA!" He called out in fear. Freya turned quickly at hearing the fear in his voice, only to find that Issei was gone. Freya rushed into the room and frantically looked around.
"ISSEI! ISSEI!?" She called out, yelling at the top of her lungs as the adrenaline pumped through her veins at full power. She quickly lifted the bed off of the ground, looking underneath, checking the closet, then the bathroom and finally the window. He didn't even leave a trace! What happened?! Freya quickly rushed out of her house, rushing towards the palace.
Issei found himself on a large platform, circular in nature. It reminded him over the other realms that he's traveled to with Freya for his training. The architecture was bridges, gates, statues, and buildings made out of an ebony-black stone, yet covered in a thick layer of ice and snow. Issei shivered violently as a cold breeze swept through the Icy Wasteland. He was having a hard time seeing in the darkness, as there was no sunlight. The wind was visible as it was half frozen due to the immense cold of this realm. It was suddenly clear where he was, based off of where he was. He thanked Göndul for the knowledge on the realms.
Flashback!
"The final realm is known as Helheim. Do you know anything about this realm?" She asked, staring at the human coldly.
"No."
"Figures…" She muttered to herself. "It's the realm of the dead. Well the dishonorable dead. As you know, the dead who die in battle either go to Valhalla or Fòlkvangr which is governed by Freya. Those who die dishonorably, like criminals, disease, mishaps or age will end up here, suffering from torment by visions of their past. While those who die fighting will end up in one of those two locations." She said, staring down at Issei. Normally, she'd ask her students if anyone had a question about what she taught, but Issei was extremely scared of Göndul and didn't want to be around her more than necessary, and she couldn't really blame him. She wasn't a very friendly person except to her own family, like her Granddaughter who was around his age.
She decided to just continue talking about Helheim. "This realm is a land of nightmares. Intense darkness covers the land as the sun does not break through the dark clouds and the emerald-colored fog and mist. It is a land of unyielding cold, locked in a state of deep freeze. There is no magic within the nine realms that can create a fire here. These conditions are so brutal that not even Odin himself could survive for long. A human even less. Life is impossible to sustain there except for a singular plant, known as Hel's Bramble. Not even we know how it grows in a sunless environment, but it is a thick, black vine-like thorny plant."
"The realm is composed of stone structures and human-shaped metal statues. Maybe at one point your kind visited and built there, but there is no way to know for sure. An ever-present wind blows through the realm, chilling all to the bone, which we call the Winds of Hel. Now, despite the fact that I said it was in a permanent deep-freeze there is a singular large river that flows, to a destination that we do not know about. No one has survived the river for the cold is even more extreme closer to the water."
"One must be careful should they find themselves of the living in Helheim for there are the restless undead that wander the land, feasting upon the living, which is unlikely as most won't survive long enough to meat these undead creatures."
Flashback over!
Issei shivered and activated some magic, placing some thick layered clothes onto his skin, but the wind found the cracks in between his skin and the clothes, sending chills up and down his body. 'S-So c-cold.' He exclaimed, slowly walking onto the bridge, his feet dragging as he moved sluggishly, as if his blood was freezing in his veins, which wouldn't be too inaccurate. His blood was thickening due to the extreme cold temperatures. 'F-Freya… M-Mother… someone please save me.' He thought in his head, tears flowing down his cheeks, and when they fell off of his cheeks they froze.
Freya rushed into the palace and shoved open the throne room doors, pushing away the two guards that had tried to slow her down, thinking she might be doing something drastic with her being so forceful and 'needing' to see the Allfather and his wife.
"Freya! What is the matter?! What's with the urgency?!" Frigg demanded, standing up as she was a little concerned about her friends actions.
"It's Issei!" Freya said, which immediately Frigg got into her 'mother' mode.
"Leave us!" She roared, staring at the guards in the room. They quickly left the throne room, closing the large doors behind them, leaving Frigg and Freya alone. "What do you mean it's Issei?!" She said, her eyes glaring at her friend.
"He's gone! He was there one moment and then he disappeared the next! I looked around the house but he just disappeared! I was right there in the hallway in front of my bedroom! The window wasn't opened or anything!"
"You… you were supposed to watch my boy!" She screamed, rushing at Freya and tackling the Goddess to the ground. "WHY WEREN'T YOU WATCHING HIM?!" She cried, slamming her fists down onto Freya's chest, tears rushing across her cheek. Freya wasn't even trying to defend herself, obviously drowning herself in worry and guilt.
"I'm sorry..." She whispered.
"You're sorry?! MY BOY IS GONE! I CAN'T EVEN SENSE HIM ANYMORE. IT'S LIKE HE DOESN'T EXIST. HE'S DEAD! MY BOY IS DEAD!" Frigg screamed, raising her hands once more to slam them down on Freya's body, but she was pulled away by a big hand. She swung her hands anyway, striking the man in the chest. It was Odin.
"Calm down dear. Our boy isn't dead, or at least that's not why his signature is gone. When I felt his signature leave, I talked to Heimdallr. It was the Bifrost. He doesn't know, but Issei was pulled into another realm. I'm already sending out my ravens to the realms to find him." Odin said, holding his wife to his chest trying to soothe her. "We'll find him…" He cooed, trying to calm his wife down which was working.
"But what if we don't find him in time?" Frigg asked, tears coating her cheeks as she looked up at her husband.
"We can't worry about that right now… let's focus on finding our son." He said, before turning his attention to Freya. "Gather whatever Valkyries you can for this search."
"I will try Allfather, but you know how most see Issei. I don't think anyone will come help with the search except maybe Eir." Freya said, standing up. "But I will help with the search."
"I understand and I cannot force them to do anything, but thank you Freya. I know it's not your fault. It was an accident that the Bifrost pulled him away. Perhaps Olrun and Heimdallr can find out what realm he was taken to." Odin said, trying to be calm and logical, but there was a fire raging underneath his stoic demeanor.
"I will talk to her and try to get her to find out." Freya said, not waiting for her to be dismissed to get to work. The Allfather and his wife wasn't going to complain. Freya was close to their son and it showed.
Issei finally made it across the bridge, crawling underneath a collapsed building. As he crawled underneath, he felt reprieve from the winds that battered him, but he was still freezing to death. Tears once more fell down his cheeks, as the teenager felt actual fear for his life. This was the first time he's ever truly thought he was going to die. 'I'm going to die… no one's going to find me here.' Issei said, starting to curl up underneath the ruins, condemning himself to his fate. As soon as he felt himself start to drift off to eternal slumber, visions starting to appear in his head.
"Your mother would be disappointed. Crying after being beaten and then quitting when you lose." Freya said. The vision changed to be one of Frigg, but it wasn't one that he's ever seen before, meaning his mind was making it up.
"You are giving up already? You are not worthy to be my son… my son would never quit." She said with a condescending tone.
"I… I can't… what can I do?" Issei asked out loud, sniffling.
"You can get up and try! Get up and actually try to survive!" Frigg said, glaring at her son who was crying. "If you die like this, you're going to be stuck here forever! Do you want to be stuck here in Helheim or do you want to come back to Asgard?!" She demanded of her son.
"I… I want to come back to Asgard! I want… I want to see you again! I want to see father! I want to see Freya!"
"Then get up Issei! You think Freya's going to like a quitter?" She asked, smirking. "Freya's never going to look at you in any way except a cowardly man since you're just going to give up when times get tough. You want the Queen of Valkyries in your bed right?! You want to see her breasts right?!"
"Yes! I want Freya!" Issei screamed out, admitting it.
"THEN GET UP AND FIGHT!" Frigg roared. Issei opened his eyes and slowly stood up.
"I must fight… I have to survive…" Issei said to himself as he started to shamble out of the rubble from a different exit, heading forward deeper into the abyss of Helheim.
