Well I got someone reposting my story from AO3 on here so I guess I'm posting here as well! Welcome to my Yu-Gi-Oh GX fanfic inspired by a random shower thought I had about a certain topic in the Yu-Gi-Oh world!
Chapter 1: New Additions
Inside a train car a 14 year old teen is going through a deck of duel monster cards. The teen has hazel eyes and long spiked black hair with red highlights that reaches to the middle of his back, his hair is tied in a ponytail midway down. He's wearing brown gloves, a black jacket, and pants with three red lines running down the arms and legs. Attached to his pants is a silver duel box. He pauses when he reaches a card with a white border. He puts his deck back in its box and looks out the window at the passing city landscape.

"No doubt about it Bastion is in." An exam instructor says after having watched Bastion's exam duel along with Dr. Crowler and the other exam instructors. "We're still waiting for examinee #2."
"Nonsense! High score or not we do not have room for people who can't make it on time." Crowler states while closing his book. As he's doing this he is approached by a man in a suit.
"Excuse me. We have one more examinee that made it just before registration closed."
"What is his exam number?" Crowler asked.
"Exam #110."
"Arriving just before registration closes shows carelessness and a lack of discipline. We don't need a slacker like that in our academy." Upon that statement, the other instructors began protesting.
"But he did make it one time, he has a right to take the exam like anyone else."
"Yeah we are supposed to wait for examinee #2 anyway. One duel should be all the time he needs to make it here."
"Yeah examinee #110 was late because of a train accident, and examinee #2 had a medical emergency and should be here in ten to fifteen minutes."
"Yeah it seems wrong to deprive them of their chance."
"Enough! Never! No, no, n-!" In the middle of Crowler's rant his phone began ringing. "Hello. Who is this? Oh Chancellor Shepard."
"I hear you are ignoring my order to wait for examinee #2 who had a medical issue AND you are trying to deprive examinee #110 a chance. I would like to remind you he was only late due to a train accident, and he still made it before the registration deadline. You're a good teacher Crowler but try to remember our goal is to bring in a wide variety of duelists with talents and perspectives that they can share. That is the way to make the most well-rounded students. Don't let your perfectionist nature blind you doctor." Crowler sighs as Sheppard hangs up.
"Nothing slips by him, huh?" Crowler begins thinking to himself "Duel academy is for the best of the best. Why is Chancellor Sheppard allying himself these two?" Crowler stands up from his desk and begins making his way to the arena. "I shall duel #110 personally, and if #2 is here by time I'm finished with him I'll duel him as well." One of the instructors reaches out to Crowler with a suitcase full of decks.
"W-Wait a minute, Dr. Crowler you should take two of these exam decks with you." Crowler scoffs at his underling.
"I don't need any of those. I'll use my personal deck."

"And thanks to Flame Wingman's effect you take damage equal to your golem's attack points." Crowler screams as his Ancient Gear Golem collapses on top of him bringing his life points to zero making Jaden the winner of their duel. "That's game! That was fun teach, let's duel again sometime." As Jaden celebrates Crowler is on the ground fuming.
"How could I lose to low scoring dropout like him." He gets back to his feet and shouts "Alright that's enough showboating Mr. Yuki! Examinee #2 report to the duel arena in one minute or consider this exam failed.
"Don't worry doctor I'm here and ready to duel. Sorry for being late sir, my legs were giving me some issues this morning." Everyone turns to look behind Jaden as the teen from the train rises on the underground platform onto the stadium in a wheelchair with a small apologetic smile. "It's been a while, but I had to bust out the ole chair if I wanted to make it here." He rolls up next to Jaden and holds a gloved hand out. "Hello, my name is Takashi Mirai pleasure to meet you Jaden. I caught the end of your duel, and you were quite impressive." Jaden shakes his hand with a pleased grin on his face.
"Thanks bro! So, #2 huh? You must have done pretty well on the written portion." Takashi smiles sheepishly at that.
"Ah well I certainly did my best. But I think you reminded everyone that theoretical duel skills don't mean everything with this showing of yours, #110."
"Enough talking! Mr. Yuki leave the field at once so Mr. Mirai can take his exam!" Crowler interrupts Jaden and Takashi's conversation startling both examinees. Jaden gives a nervous chuckle and begins making his way to the platform and starts going down.
"I think that's my cue to go. Good luck man I'm looking forward to seeing you throw down."
"Thank you. I hope I don't disappoint." Takashi rolls to his side of the field and begins taking off his jacket showing his gray shirt. "I do apologize again for being late Dr. Crowler my legs gave me a lot of trouble this morning." He finishes taking off his jacket revealing black metal prosthetic arms, running along the arms are red glowing circuit lines, the elbows of the arms being glowing red circles that the red circuits connect to.

"My word." Bastion looks down with a calculating expression. While Syrus looks ready to faint, Jaden starts walking up beside him.
"Woah I thought he had a strong grip." Jaden chuckles startling Syrus.
"Jeez you scared me Jaden." Syrus takes some deep breaths. "You were amazing out there Jaden!" Jaden smiles but keeps his eyes focused on the arena.
"Thanks Syrus. But we should save the talking for later I got a good feeling from Takashi and don't think we want to miss this." Bastion spares a glance at Jaden before refocusing on the arena.

"Geez who let the cripple in?" Raizou and Taiyou laugh at their joke as they flank Chazz who's looking down with disinterest.
"That examinee winning was a fluke Crowler got careless and paid for it. He'll wipe the floor with this reject."

"Oh my. I wonder what happened to him?" Alexis says while standing next to Zane who stares down with an intense look.
"It doesn't really matter. What matters is that he's about to show us what he can do." Alexis looks at Zane at that and then looks back at the arena with more focus.

"Oh, my goodness. It's a good thing I listened to the chancellor not letting a disabled kid take the test because he was late over a medical issue would be a big blow to the school's reputation." Crowler sweats upon seeing the prosthetics proving the wheelchair wasn't a ploy for leniency. "Well, I appreciate the apology, you at least have better manners than Mr. Yuki, it does not mean I will take it easy on you though." Crowler resets his duel jacket reloading his deck. "Though I am sorry to say I can't afford to lose a second time in a row to an examinee so you will not be accepted this year."
At that Takashi holds his left arm out and the top of the elbow pops out creating the base of a duel disk with slots for a deck and graveyard zone. From the forearm pop out 5 scale like protrusions. "I wouldn't have it any other way Dr. Crowler." Crowler and Takashi stare each other down and shout.
"Duel!"
Crowler LP/Hand: 8000/ Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon, Ancient Gear Castle, Ancient Gear, Ancient Gear Cannon, and Statue of the Wicked.
Takashi LP/Hand: 8000/ Cartorhyn the Hidden Gem of the Seafront, two Adamancipator Crystal – Dragites, Gogogo Golem, and Adamancipator Crystal – Raptite.
"I'll start this duel off." Crowler draws Fiendish Chain. "First I'll play Ancient Gear Castle which gives all "Ancient Gear" monsters 300 extra attack points and then I'll summon Ancient Gear in attack mode and since a monster was normal summoned my Ancient Gear Castle gains a counter."
Ancient Gear Atk / Def: 100 / 800
Ancient Gear Atk: 100300=400
Crowler then sets Fiendish Chain and Statue of the Wicked. "Then I'll set two cards facedown and end my turn." Crowler smirks. "I will not be humiliated again by an upstart, with this starting play nothing this boy has will stop me."
"Then I believe it's my turn." Takashi draws another Adamancipator Crystal – Raptite. "First I'll play Gogogo Golem in attack mode."
Gogogo Golem Atk / Def: 1800 / 1500
"Not so fast Mr. Mirai by summoning your Gogogo Golem you add another counter to my Ancient Gear Castle. Then I'll activate Fiendish Chain by targeting an effect monster, in this case your golem, I can negate whatever effect it has and prevent it from attacking as long as my chain is on the field." Crowler sweats a little. "That was a bit of a risk I never heard of this golem card, so I don't know what effect it has. Just who is this boy to have a card I don't even recognize."
Takashi listens with a rueful smile. "Well that puts a bit of a damper on things, but easy come, easy go I suppose. I guess I'll end my turn, it's your turn Dr. Crowler." Takashi thinks to himself. "Not the best first turn I've ever had, but all it takes to turn a duel around is one good draw. Don't worry Pegasus I'll keep my promise."
"Hmph one setback and your whole turn is over. Not very impressive Mr. Mirai." Draws Heavy Storm "First I'll sacrifice my Ancient Gear Castle with its two counters to tribute summon Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon!"

"Man, I would have loved to throw down with that monster." Jaden looks down at the gear dragon with awe. Syrus chuckles nervously at that while Bastion keeps his attention on the arena.

"Oh, the wheelchair boy is going down. That absolutely pathetic first play of his plus Crowler's legendary dragon, this kid is toast." Chazz's friends laugh to themselves while Chazz looks down at Gogogo Golem with an intense stare.
"I was top of my class back in middle school, how have I never heard of this card before?"

"Crowler really doesn't waste anytime does he. Bringing out another big hitter this early two duels in a row. Hey Zane, have you ever heard of Gogogo Golem before? Zane?" Alexis looks up when Zane doesn't respond as he silently looks on at the duel before him.

"Now I'll play Heavy Storm! While it will destroy my Fiendish Chain freeing your golem it also destroys my facedown Statue of the Wicked allowing me to summon a Wicked token.
Wicked Token Atk/Def: 1000/1000
"Now my dragon, attack his golem!" Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon destroys Gogogo Golem dealing 1200 damage to Takashi's Life Points. "And now my Ancient Gear and Wicked Token will attack you directly!" Ancient Gear and the Wicked Token both slam into Takashi doing 100 and 1000 damage respectively.
Takashi LP: 8000-1200-100-1000=5700
"With that I'll end my turn. It's not looking good for you Mr. Mirai I sure hope you can pull something more impressive off than one easily destroyed monster." Takashi takes the criticism in stride.
"Well, I'll certainly try not to disappoint you Dr. Crowler, but you know how the game goes sometimes, you just can't always get the cards you need right away." Takashi draws Adamancipator Signs and sets Adamancipator Crystal – Dragite facedown. "Looks like we're going to keep this going for another round. I'll set one monster face down and end my turn." Crowler shakes his head at this.
"Tsk tsk tsk Mr. Mirai for someone who ranked #2 on the written portion I thought you would know to put more than just monsters in your deck. Oh well I will simply have to teach you the error of your ways. Draw!" Crowler draws Ancient Gear Golem. "And it seems you will be receiving the lesson now. I will sacrifice my Ancient Gear and my Wicked Token to summon my Ancient Gear Golem!"
Ancient Gear Golem Atk/Def: 3000/3000
"Now, Ancient Gear Golem attack his facedown monster with Ultimate Pound!" The set card flips up to reveal Adamancipator Crystal – Dragite.
Adamancipator Crystal – Dragite Atk/Def: 0/2200
"And Ancient Gear Golem deals piercing damage when attacking a defense position monster, and while a level four monster with 2200 defense is impressive you still take 800 points of damage. Also, with you wide open my Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon attacks you directly!"
Takashi LP: 5700-800-3000=1900
"After that I end my turn. It looks like you will have to reapply next year Mr. Mirai, because it's over. Maybe balance your deck better and try to be on time next year young man." Crowler shakes his head condescendingly. "I almost feel sorry for the poor lad. Against a normal proctor and their test decks he might have stood a chance. Oh well better luck next year kid." Takashi just shakes his head at the doctors early dismissal.
"Don't forget sir, it's not over until it's over, one good draw is all it takes to turn a duel around." Takashi then draws his card.

"You tell him Takashi! It's not over till the last card is played!" Syrus is startled out of his focus by Jaden's shout looking at him as he's grinning ear to ear. Bastion gives his two cents.
"I don't really know what one card could do Jaden. He has no cards on the field and clearly has a dead hand, or at least an almost dead hand. Crowler on the other hand has two of his most powerful monsters on the field with 3000 attack points each. Not only that, even if he draws a trap that could save him, but Ancient Gear Golem makes it so you can't activate Spells or Traps until after the damage step of it's attack. With only 1900 life points left there's not much Takashi can do without some sort of miracle." Jaden just keeps grinning and points down to Takashi.
"I don't know Bastion he looks pretty happy with what he drew." Bastion looks down to see Takashi looking excited at the card he drew.

"I appreciate the condolences Dr. Crowler sir, but it's not necessary." Takashi grin grows bigger as he holds the back of the card out to Crowler. "Because while you might be right that it's over sir. But not for me! Because you have a monster on the field, but I don't I can special summon Adamancipator Analyzer!"
Adamancipator Analyzer Atk/Def: 1500/700
"Next I'll summon the other Adamancipator Crystal – Dragite from my hand."
Adamancipator Crystal – Dragite Atk/Def: 0/2200
"But they won't be sticking around for long because my Analyzer has a secret Dr. Crowler see he's a Tuner monster." Crowler's face drops at this unfamiliar terminology.
"A what card?" Takashi's excitement grows at hearing Crowler's confusion.
"You see sir I applied to the academy to fulfill a promise to the man that saved me. To show off and test all new summoning methods against the best of the next generation of duelists. Now I tune my level four Adamancipator Crystal – Dragite into my level four Adamancipator Analyzer! Glimmering scales will become a ray of hope! Become the path that lights the way! Synchro summon! Roar, Adamancipator Risen – Dragite!" Analyzer and Cystal-Dragite fly into the air and becoming stars passing through a tunnel made of green rings. A bright light consumes them that Adamancipator Risen – Dragite flies out of.

"What?!" Crowler almost falls over in shock at the newly summoned monster.

All across the room the onlookers have looks of shock for what they just saw and heard, with only two exceptions Zane who simply quirks his eyebrow masking his shock and. "That's so awesome! A whole new type of monster with a unique way to summon them! Now I have to duel him!" Jaden is visibly shaking with excitement, while his two companions are starting to shake off their shock upon hearing him.
"I've only known you for a little bit Jaden and I'm already not surprised that's your immediate reaction." Syrus sweat drops while Jaden sheepishly laughs. Bastion being shaken out of his shock is now muttering to himself all the possibilities that this new summoning method can bring to dueling, and wondering just who Takashi Mirai is.

"I call foul! What did you do to your duel disk to summon a clearly fake card?!" Crowler looks fit to pop while Takashi looks to have calmed down after summoning his synchro monster.
"I promise you sir this card is very real. You can check the database to confirm." Crowler looks like he's about to object when one of the other exam instructors with a laptop speaks up.
"Actually, sir he's not lying these cards he's been playing were added a year ago according to their dates. It's just they were hidden with restricted access until he played them today." Crowler turns sharply at that.
"Restricted! By whom?!" The instructor types on the laptop looking for the culprit. Upon finding them he freezes frustrating Crowler more. "Well, who is it?!"
"Maximillion Pegasus sir." Crowler froze at that slowly turning to look at Takashi who had a calm smile on his face.
"Just who is this kid?"
"Well now that the misunderstanding has been cleared up I think I will continue my turn. I'll start by activating my Dragites effect, first I will excavate the top five cards of my deck." Takashi draws the top five cards of his deck Gogogo Golem, Adamancipator Crystal – Raptite, Adamancipator Laputite, Adamancipator Researcher, and Adamancipator Friends showing them to Crowler. "And for every rock monster I excavated, and I count three with my Golem, Raptite, and Researcher, I can send a card from your field to your hand and then return my excavated cards to my deck at the bottom in any order. So, say goodbye to your Ancient Gear Golem and Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon!" Adamancipator Risen – Dragite roars and sends Crowlers two monsters back to his hand. Much to Crowler's horror.
"My monsters! Forget It! It doesn't matter I still have all my life points your one monster can't finish me this turn!" Takashi chuckles.
"You're right Dragite alone can't finish you, but luckily he has friends. Next I'll play Adamancipator Signs bringing Analyzer back from my grave to the field, and since it was an Adamancipator monster I can place a level four or lower rock monster on top of my deck, and I'll put Cartorhyn the Hidden Gem of the Seafront on top."

Next I'll activate Analyzer's effect to excavate the top five cards of my deck again." Takashi pulls his top five cards showing them Cartorhyn the Hidden Gem of the Seafront, Mirror Force, Adamancipator Seeker, Dimensional Prison, and Bottomless Trap Hole. "From the two monsters I excavated I'll summon Cartorhyn the Hidden Gem of the Seafront."

"Now I'll tune my level two Cartohyn with my level four Analyzer to synchro summon Adamancipator Risen – Raptite!"
Adamancipator Risen – Raptite Atk/Def: 2200/2800
"Now I'll activate my new monsters effect excavate another five cards from my deck." Takashi grabs another five cards and shows them. Adamancipator Seeker, Adamancipator Laputite, Adamancipator Relief, Mirror Force, and Adamancipator Resonance. "And from those cards I'll summon Adamancipator Seeker and activate his effect after putting the remaining four cards on the bottom of my deck. Now I'll excavate five cards again."
Adamancipator Seeker Atk/Def: 1200/1000
"Again! Just what kind of deck is this!" Crowler is sweating buckets at this point.
"Just a simple archaeology deck sir." Takashi shows Crowler his five cards. Gogogo Golem, Bottomless Trap Hole, Adamancipator Crystal – Leonite, Adamancipator Seeker, and Adamancipator Relief. "And from these I'll summon Adamancipator Crystal – Leonite!"
Adamancipator Crystal – Leonite Atk/Def: 0/2200
"Now I'll tune level four my Crystal – Leonite with my level four Seeker to Synchro summon, Adamancipator Risen – Leonite! Now let's excavate one more time Leonite!" He pulls five more cards showing them. Adamancipator Analyzer, Dimensional Prison, Adamancipator Researcher, Adamancipator Resonance, and Adamancipator Laputite. "From these cards I'll add Analyzer to my hand, next I'll send a Cartorhyn from my hand to the grave to allow me to normal summon and additional Water or Earth monster this turn, and I'll summon Analyzer."
Adamancipator Analyzer Atk/Def: 1500/700
Crowler quickly does the math in his head. "Oh no." Takashi holds his right arm out smiling.
"This was a fun match sir. But I believe it's time to finish this. Go everyone! Attack his life points directly!" All of Takashi's monsters converge on Crowler hitting him all at once as he screams in panic.
"Not again!"
Crowler LP: 8000-1500-2200-2400-3000=0
Winner- Takashi Mirai
Crowler slumps to the ground in defeat, while Takashi bows his head. "Thank you for this opportunity sir, I promise not to let you or the academy down." With that Takashi makes his way to the platform and starts going down. The only sound to be heard being Jaden's cheering.

After reaching the bottom Takashi deactivates his duel disk returning it into the prosthetic. He taps the back of his left hand; it opens up into a video communicator. "Call Pegasus." After two rings Pegasus appears on the screen grinning.
"Ah Takashi boy. How did your duel go? I assume you won." Takashi gives a small grin at Pegasus' vote of confidence.
"It was touch and go there at the start, but I feel like my turnaround wowed everyone."
"Good, good. How about you? Are you doing ok, you didn't overwork yourself did you?"
"I'm fine sir, just a little tired. The energy from synchro summoning still takes a bit out of me."
"Yes one of the big reasons I haven't sent these new summoning methods to market yet. I've been talking to Kaiba boy still and he's still working on an upgrade for his duel disks to supply the energy needed to summon these cards." Pegasus gets a concerned look. "Now did the other, thing, been give you problems during the duel?"
Takashi rubs his forehead at that. "It's getting better sir, just a dull headache now."
Pegasus looks relieved. "That's good. Still be careful how often you duel. I know we want to test these cards, but your health comes first. Just try to stick to duels with larger audiences for the most part and keep private duels to a minimum if you can help it."
"I will sir. I appreciate your concern; I promise I won't let you down." Pegasus shakes his head at that in amusement.
"That was never in question my boy."
So a few things. I know the whole "Someone is also late like Jaden so they get to duel Crowler too" is a bit of a trope for introducing OC's or crossover characters and a little cheesy, but it served my needs so I figured "Eh why not" I promise I won't be doing stuff like that very often where OC ALSO does something a canon character is doing. My main hope for my writing in this story is to not have the OC or other canon characters overshadow each other, I want this to be more of an ensemble cast and less one character stealing the show. But basically this all came from a random thought I had. "I wonder if a prosthetic arm that doubles as a duel disk exists?" And just built up from there until I decided to make a fic, my first fic, out of it. Feel free to let me know how I did.
