The Monarch boat rumbled out to sea. It had been sent off the coast of Argentina to pursue a creature that had been allegedly killing all sea life in the area.
The boat had been outfitted with some mediocre tech, most outdated but still effective. It had SONAR and radiation detectors for making sure no monster could sneak up on them. There were some modified whaling harpoons, outfitted with explosive tips for some defence against a smaller beast. They would be no use against a full sized titan.
The boat periodically dropped SONAR buoys to sense the mystery creature if it passed by one of them.
As a bit of an afterthought, a Ph probe was slapped onto the underbelly of the boat, only readable via an app on the captain's phone. It was added because it was assumed acid had something to do with what happened to the area due to the low Ph of the waters.
The boat cruised around the waters between the Falkland islands and Argentina. Dead fish floated on the surface of the water everywhere you looked. Sea birds were taking advantage of all of the free food but many of them lay dead in the water too.
"Captain!" one of the seamen yelled ,"we've got something on a buoy!"
The captain rushed over to sea what was going on. Sure enough one of the sonar buoys detected a large shape swimming towards it. When it reached the buoy it seemed to stop, right on top of it and then, after a few seconds of suspense, the buoy went offline.
"Did that thing just eat our sonar?" the Captain asked
"L-Looks like it," the man replied
"How big was that thing?" she asked again.
"To me it looked about 55 feet," said the seaman ,"not sure though."
The captain watched the buoys as, one by one they got devoured by the strange beast out there. The creature was following the trail of buoys the ship had left behind.
"Best to know that that thing is coming for us," she thought, trying to look on the bright side ,"rather than have it sneak up."
The captain ordered for the boat to be stopped. They dropped anchor and bobbed up and down in the waves, watching the screens as the mystery creature slowly approached the boat one SONAR buoy at a time.
A large portion of the crew, who currently had not much to do, all kept a keen eye on the closest buoy to them, which was just on the horizon, only visible with binoculars.
Suddenly a dark shape seemed to bulge out the water behind the buoy and wash over it like a wave, enveloping it .
"To your stations!" the captain shouted, then watched as the deck crew scrambled for their spot. "don't fire the harpoons till I give the order."
The entire crew waited painfully for something to happen. The captain looked over the side and saw a dark shape pass underneath. She was pretty sure it was hostile but she had been given direct orders from Monarch to simply observe and only shoot in self defence.
Suddenly her phone pinged. She quickly checked to see what it was, slightly concerned because no one should be able to contact her as she had turned off mobile data. Turns out it was a notification from the PH sensor, detecting a drastic increase in acidity of the water.
The Sonar showed that the creature was right below them.
!THUNK!
The whole boat shook with the impact.
"Our hull's been rammed!" one of the crew shouted, "the water level's rising, the pumps can't keep up."
The hull of the boat had been reinforced to withstand a substantial beating but it was still only steel and there was only so much steel can do, especially against a creature that's over half the size of the boat..
"Fire at will!" she shouted ,"if that thing show's its head again you give it hell!"
The creature was still directly underneath the boat, where there was no good way to get a shot of it. At that moment, the captain realised that it was going to ram the hull again. There was no way the boat would survive another impact like that.
Before she could yell "ABANDON SHIP!" a giant dark form smashed through the middle of the boat, slicing it in half, debris rained down from the sky, killing much of the crew. The creature landed on the back side of the boat, dragging it underwater, along with all the crew.
The captain, along with all the crew on the front half of the ship all jumped off and began to frantically swim away from the disaster zone. Soon the other half of the ship disappeared under the waves too.
What was left of the ship crew were all trying to put as much distance between them and the monster as possible, hoping that they weren;t worth the bother of eating.
