Chapter 12
NCFD entered the building and immediately went to the security desk. The head security guard explained that the alarm had somehow been disabled. No sprinkler activity had been detected and no carbon monoxide detectors had gone off. They were able to confirm that the building had been evacuated and the fire department told them to clear out. NCFD had no choice but to clear each floor to visually confirm that the building was indeed not on fire.
"NCFD has begun to clear the building," Brainy warn Kara and Nia.
"Where could our baddies be hiding?" Kara asked him.
"Start on the floor below. I'm not seeing anyone on the security cameras. They may have been able to loop the footage while I was trying to make sure the hacking attempt failed," the twelfth level intellect admitted.
"Was the hack prevented?" Nia wanted to know.
"They were kept out but it seemed like a half-hearted attempt. It could have just been a distraction," Brainy said.
"Just like the fire alarms. They're heading for the servers. They have to be and they somehow have the biometrics they need," Kara was off like a shot down to the servers on the floor below.
"I've alerted NCPD that we have a hacking attempt. They are entering the building. I've alerted Sentinel and Guardian. They are enroute," Brainy told them,
"Good because I've got three people attempting to get into the server room down here," the blonde told him. Brainy heaved a sigh and Kara imagined he was rolling his eyeballs as he attempted to pull up the cameras which were pointed at the server room.
"Hey what are you guys up to?" Nia asked causing the three to whip around. It was at that moment she recognized one of her coworkers – Martin Finnegan. He was a very nice man who had helped her with the computer and the large printer upstairs on a number of occasions. Somehow Enigma must have gotten to him. The man next to Martian disrupted her thoughts as he raised a gun toward Dreamer.
"I wouldn't do that if I was you," Kara came out of the stairwell nearest the server room. With Nia having come out of the opposite stairwell, they had effectively cornered them between each other and the office furniture.
"NCPD are on their way as is NCFD so you're about to be surrounded by a bunch of law enforcement and some very angry firefighters. You did waste their time after all. There is no fire here," Nia spoke up. There was something about the other two men… she had seen them somewhere before…
"You've intervened in all of our work!" The second man who was with Martin sounded very upset and picked up his own weapon and aimed it at the blonde.
"If you insist on being a part of a terrorist organization, then I and my friends will not stop until you all are locked up," Kara told him.
"Now, put your guns down, and come quietly," Nia said. They heard the elevator ding and police officers exited the lift. Kara knew that they were running out of time as the officers would find them on their sweep. What happened next, she had not seen coming.
The first man put the gun to his own head and pulled the trigger. Nia's eyes went wide as the second man turned the gun on Martin. She saw a blur and charged in there, knowing Kara had gotten there first. There was a scream, but it was the second man, whose gun had blown up in his hand because Kara had bent the barrel. The bullet had hit the bent and exploded. She knocked the man unconscious and he slipped to the floor.
"Are you ok?" Nia asked Martin, who Kara had behind her.
"I…" the man was obviously in shock.
"We have to detain you. They are making you do this. We can help you," Kara said. That's when Brainy's voice broke into her head,
"Sentinel and Guardian are here with ARGUS back up. Keep the two men detained so that ARGUS can take custody. Meet them on the floor below." Neither woman could answer them but they knew what they had to do. Nia took Martin into the stairwell and Kara was right behind her. The stairwell door just closed as the NCPD officers found the man who had killed himself.
Once down on the floor below, Nia made Martin take a seat inside a nearby office. The unconscious man was put on the floor, the office door was locked, and Kara turned her attention to her male coworker. He was looking incredibly frazzled. Nia used her comms to reach out to Alex and Kelly, hoping that they were on their way.
"ARGUS will be here soon and you will be taken into their custody. We need to know how you met Enigma. How did you get involved with these men?" Kara wanted to know.
"I was told that I needed to send a message to Supergirl," Martin finally managed.
"What is that message?" The blonde cocked an eyebrow, unsure what Enigma could possibly want to tell her.
"I can't. they told me if I spoke it that I would die," Martin was obviously not fully under control of the Snakebite or Enigma.
"We will make sure that doesn't happen. Don't say anything about the message until we can get you examined by a doctor. Do you know the man who killed himself? Do you know this man?" Kara wanted to know.
"I know these men," Nia spoke up. The two looked at her, one unsure why she interrupted them, and the other wondering how she could know them.
"They were in the community center camera footage," Nia said.
