So this is a rewrite of a very brief oneshot and wrote on the 6th of February in 2014, called Hex Huntresses. Sometime after that before I published one of my other Hex Girls fanfics It's a Hex Life in 2016 I took that fanfic down, owing to being embarrassed by its abysmal writing quality. I then forgot about it until 2020 when I came across its word file still saved on my laptop, where whilst I still found the writing quality terrible the core idea of it and the scene seemed good enough to waste so I rewrote it around the time the Hex Girls' SD Guess Who episode came out. Then after showing fellow Hex Girls writer The Wandering Piney it around the time I rewrote it in 2020 I never posted it on here for some reason until today in 2024...so better late than never I guess.
Anyway hope one of the few people in this world to actually look up and read Hex Girls fanfiction gets at least some enjoyment from this.
Other than the slightly muffled sound of cars and city life in the distance the only sound in Central Park was the blowing of the cold autumnal wind. Other than the occasional jogger or homeless man there was not a soul in sight, and that's just the way that Dr. Arthur Rensberg liked it. He had always disliked crowds and by extension cities, it was why despite the cold of the night he was out for a walk so late, it was the one time Central Park was mostly empty of people.
By day Rensberg was a well-respected zoologist, known primarily for his work on wildlife in southern Africa, with particular focus in and around the area of the Zambezi river. It was why he was currently in New York despite his inherent dislike of the city, to give a talk at the American Museum of Natural History on the decline of wildlife in the Zambezi region.
And by night…well by night he was still a well-respected zoologist, but he was also a part time cryptozoologist and supernatural researcher. Admittedly it was more of a hobby really but he still took to his research on cryptids and the supernatural with as much zeal as he did his zoological work. His interest in the field was sparked by an encounter with the Vietnamese Rock Ape when he had served in Vietnam back in the day. Mostly it took the form of researching sightings though on the occasion when he was in an area known for cryptids or hauntings he made sure to investigate if he had the time. Outside of speaking with other researchers in those fields though he wasn't public about his interest in it, doing so was an easy path to ridicule in zoology for understandable reasons.
However he his walk in Central Park tonight was purely for leisure, doubtful you'd find an undiscovered creature or the supernatural here of all places. Just a bit of exercise to do him some good.
It was then that Rensberg was startled by a sudden sound he heard pierce the tranquil air.
A scream.
He turned and ran towards the direction he'd heard the scream come from, reaching a bridge over a small valley after nearly a minute of running. Beneath the bridge were six people, three each gender. The three men were all slumped against the ground, presumably unconscious, whilst the three women stood over them. Each had a rather gothic appearance, and had presumably knocked out the three men.
He found it hard to believe though. Each women was very slender and stick like, one black haired and clad in equally black clothing, one blonde clad in green and one redhead clad in purple. They were cast in too much shadow under the bridge to see any other detail. Compared to the men they'd certainly lose in a fight. Yet how else would he explain the scene he saw before him other than that the women were responsible?
Then as he moved into the bushes to avoid being scene he heard one of the women speak.
"Dusk I told you to wait whilst I entranced them!" the black haired woman said in annoyance as she put her hands on her hips.
"Yeah but that takes too long." whined the shorter blonde haired woman, presumably Dusk. "And I'm hungry!"
"I don't care how hungry you are. If I say wait, then you wait!" ordered the black haired woman, letting out what sounded like a hiss before continuing. "We're meant to not be noticed, and that's hard to do when you cause one of them to scream!"
"Thorn's right Dusk." agreed the redheaded woman. "You really should've waited. We can't afford to be spotted, and preferably we don't want to hurt our prey."
"We won't be! No one's here in this part of the part except for these three guys!" replied Dusk defensively, before shrugging. "And who cares if we hurt them? When you erase their memories they won't remember it anyway."
"That's no excuse for hurting them. Just because we have…different nutritional needs doesn't mean we need to be so uncivilized!" hissed back Thorn. "We're not monsters."
"We kind of are though." replied the redhead.
"No Luna we aren't. Is the cat a monster for eating a mouse?" replied Thorn quickly, her voice defensive. "No it's not, it's just doing what it has to in order to get food. We're the same as the cat, just higher up the food chain."
"Can you discuss philosophy later." whined Dusk in interruption. "I'm hungry!"
Rensberg was pondering what the women had said. They'd confirmed they, or at least the one called Dusk had, knocked out the three men. An unusual feet, but it was improbable rather than impossible. What was odd was the reference to Thorn having the ability to entrance and erase the men's memories. And the mention of hunger and the food chain. Could they be maybe…
His thoughts were then interrupted by Thorn. "Ugh fine. What's done is done." answered Thorn, she then stretched out her arms and motioned to two of the unconscious men and smirked. "Bon appetit sisters."
Dusk and Luna then, with a show of strength and speed that shocked Rensberg, picked up two of the men by the shoulders with remarkable ease for the size different between them. But the shock didn't stop there, as soon after picking the men up each women bit into their neck.
The realization then dawned on him.
These three women were vampires.
Rensberg immediately began fumbling in his pockets, he must have a notebook and pen on him somewhere. He nearly always did, and a sighting such as this had to be recorded!
After a few seconds of fumbling he found a notebook and pen, and began to write down what he observed. A bit to avidly, as he dropped his pen on the ground and it rolled off the grass and onto the tarmac of the path.
The black haired vampire, Thorn, was turning away from her fellow vampires and appeared to be headed towards the remaining unconscious man when she stopped. With unbelievable speed she spun around and looked directly in the direction of where his pen had rolled, her eyes narrowed and focused on that area. She seemed agitated, and was baring her fangs slightly.
Could she really have heard something as quiet as his pens rolling on the path? She must've if she'd looked at it, presumably vampires must have far better hearing than a human did. He'd be noting this down if he still had his pen, but best to not reach out and grab it for now least he be spotted.
"Would you hurry the fuck up Thorn!" said Dusk, causing Thorn's focused look to be replaced with one of irritation "Some of us want to eat more tonight!"
The blacked hair vampire turned as swiftly to face Dusk, baring her fangs and hissing aggressively at her. The green clad vampire bared her fangs and hissed back, but backed away after a few seconds. During the display of dominance Rensberg carefully reached out and grabbed his pen, before proceeding to continue taking notes.
The vampire in the purple dress then finished with the human she'd been drinking from and, after dropping him to the ground, walked over towards the other two vampires.
"The blood of these New Yorkers is a bit sour. Not really my preferred type of blood." said Luna, in between licking blood of her fangs.
"At least they are easy to hunt. This park has to be one of the best places we have every hunted in." replied Dusk happily. Thorn looked like she was going to reply when there was a groan. It was the third man, he was regaining consciousness
Thorn then hissed at her fellow vampires before she turned around and walked over towards the man. Presumably she was warning them not to interfere, she'd deal with this.
She then knelt down next to the man, who looked about twenty, and put her hand under his chin and made him look into her eyes just as she was fully regaining consciousness. When he realized where he was and what had happened he started trying to back up away from Thorn, his chin slipping from her hand. But it didn't last long as he quickly bumped up against the side of the bridge. He had a look of fear in his eyes and was saying "Please don't kill me!" over and over again. Thorn merely walked towards him in a slow calculating manner before kneeling down next to him. Once again she took hold of his chin and put one of her pale finger over his lips in a shushing motion.
"I'm not going to kill you. I could but we don't do that, especially since in a big city like this that would be counterproductive." reassured Thorn in a sweet voice as she stroked the man's cheek caringly. "It will look fairly normal when I'm done with you. Just here passed out young men in Central Park. People will presume you three got drunk and passed out, nothing suspicious at all."
The man stopped speaking but kept shaking. Thorn then gripped his chin harder and dragged her nail down his cheek, causing it to bleed onto her finger. She then put her finger in her mouth and licked off the blood quite quickly and eagerly, causing a piece of the man's own blood to land on his face in the process.
Fascinating, thought Rensberg. The vampire appeared to be playing with her food. Another behaviour he'd hadn't heard of them displaying before.
"Hmmm your blood isn't sour...interesting. It tastes familiar." said Thorn with curiosity in her voice. "Where are you from?"
"Ma…Massacheutts." answered the young man with a stutter. Thorn smiled sweetly at him in response.
"Just like us." replied Thorn sweetly, her voice turning almost flirtatious. "Looks like we have something in common then." She then pushed the man down against the ground and climbed onto of him, effectively mounting him. "Lucky you, I always prefer locals."
Thorn then put her hands on either side of his head and stared at him. It looked like the man tried to look away, almost as if he was struggling, but try as he might he couldn't. After observing a few seconds of that Rensberg took note of the other two vampires' behavior.
Luna was examining her nails, her expression neutral other than a look of envy in her eyes. Presumably at Thorn getting to drink their preferred blood type. Dusk on the other hand was beginning to advance towards Thorn and the young man, in a slow calculated catlike manner.
She was barely a metre away when the Thorn spun around and leap to her feet, and hissed at her with ferocity. The green clad vampire hissed back and showed her fangs but withdrew after Thorn hissed again with more ferocity, showing her fangs which were noticed noticeably longer than Dusk's own.
Thorn then turned back around to face the young man, repositioning herself accordingly.
"Now where were we...ah yes you were staring into my eyes." said Thorn sweetly as she resumed her prior activity. She continued staring for about a minute before she moved her head from side to side. The young man's head following perfectly as she did so.
Utterly fascinating thought Rensberg as he observed the scene, the man was completely entranced. Appears some of the legends about vampires were very true indeed.
"You won't remember any of thissssss... nor will your friends. Although I'm going to be kind to you and let you remember my face." Thorn said sweetly. "You'll like that won't you?"
"Yes." was all the young man said in reply, his voice completely monotone.
Then without warning Thorn bit down on the side of his neck. The man didn't even flinch. She spent about three minutes drinking his blood, her two followers looking on enviously. When she finished she stood up and turned to look at the other to vampires, the young man's blood dripping from her mouth. She bared her fangs , revealing them to be stained bright red with the man's blood. Thorn then began to lick her fangs clean in front of the other too vampires, in a display of teasing and dominance.
"His blood was delicious. It would have been better without an interruption though." Thorn said after finishing cleaning her fangs, glaring briefly Dusk in the process. "But it was good none the less. Now let's head back to the tour bus."
Thorn then turned to walk out from under the bridge, opposite to the side Rensberg was observing them from, with Luna following behind her shortly after. Dusk however stayed put.
"But I'm still hungry!" whined Dusk, causing her fellow vampires to stop and turn to face her.
"We've already fed, we need to get rest for our concert tomorrow." said Thorn as she put her hands on her hips. "So no."
"But…" began Dusk before getting cut off.
"I said no." hissed Thorn in annoyance. "Maybe on another night I would've said yes. But after earlier where you disobeyed my order I'm not leaving you out to hunt by yourself."
"You head back Thorn. I'll stay out with Dusk to make sure she doesn't screw up again." negotiated Luna as she walked back over to Dusk.
"But we need rest for our concert." said Thorn. "I'm not having either of you half asleep during a performance like other times where we stayed out hunting too late."
"We won't be out that much longer." replied Luna. "We'll be back in time to rest."
"Yeah just one more meal." added Dusk hopefully.
"Ugh fine." said Thorn divaishly as she gave in. "But you damn well better be back before morning."
"Don't worry we will be." replied Luna.
"Well good hunting then sisters." said Thorn, before turning and walking out from under the bridge and away from Rensberg's sight.
"How come Thorn's so bitchy now." asked Dusk in annoyance.
"You know how it is, the whole being the alpha of the pack thing's gone to her head a bit." answered Luna. "She's just looking out for us."
"Well she could do it by being less of a bitch…" replied Dusk as she crossed her arms and frowned.
Rensberg then lost track of the conversation as he got lost in his thoughts. Tour bus? Concert? These vampires were in a band? He'd always imagined vampires to hide themselves, yet if they were in a band these three vampires would be out in the public eye. Certainly he'd have to investigate it more, first finding out what their band's name was and then…
His thoughts were then interrupted by a sudden whoosh of air going past him. The zoologist spun around in an attempt to see what had passed him, but he saw nothing.
When he turned back around to look at the bridge though he noticed the two remaining vampires were gone. That must've been the whoosh of air he felt, the two of them must've rushed past him whilst he was distracted by his thoughts. Looks like the tales of vampires having super speed was true as well.
It then occurred to him that it probably wasn't the best idea to stick around in a park where there were currently two vampires on the hunt.
His hypothesis and questions could come later, first things first he should get out of Central Park. Swiftly he got to his feet and headed towards the park's closest exit.
