Chapter 2 : A New Day
Unknown Place
Beast Boy flew back into the building and reverted to his human form. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself. "Okay, BB, think. You're in another world, and you need to find a way back." He sat down and began to plan his next steps.
The first priority was information. He needed to learn about this world, its inhabitants, and the magic that got brought him here. The witch who summoned him might have answers, but going back to the castle was too risky. He needed to find someone who could help him.
For now he decided to explore the city to gather information and find anything useful. As dawn broke, he transformed into a small bird and flew out of the abandoned building, soaring above the medieval city.
The city was bustling with life as merchants set up their stalls in the marketplace. The market was a vibrant tapestry of colors and sounds, with vendors selling everything from fresh produce and meats of animals he had never seen before to exotic spices and fabrics. People from all walks of life haggled over prices, their voices creating a lively symphony.
The narrow, winding alleys were filled with the smells of freshly baked bread and roasting meats. Cobblestone streets echoed with the clatter of horse-drawn carriages and the chatter of townsfolk. Children ran and played, darting between pedestrians and market stalls.
As Beast Boy flew lower, he noticed the grandeur of the city's churches. The towering spires and intricate stained glass windows of the main cathedral stood out against the skyline. The church bells tolled, calling the faithful to morning prayers. Monks in simple robes walked the streets, their heads bowed in quiet contemplation.
He perched on the edge of a fountain in a small square and transformed back into his human form, taking in the sights and sounds. He had to admit this was not like he had seen before.
The square was surrounded by quaint shops and taverns, their signs creaking in the gentle breeze. A blacksmith's forge rang with the sound of hammer on anvil, and the smell of molten metal filled the air.
The inhabitants of the city were diverse. There were farmers in rough-spun tunics, noblemen and women in fine silks and velvets, and armored knights patrolling the streets.
In one alley, he discovered an weird shop, like raven weird. The windows were filled with dried herbs, strange potions, and other mystical items. The shopkeeper, an elderly woman with a kindly face, was busy organizing her wares. Beast Boy made a mental note to return later and see if she had any knowledge of magic that could help him, Doubtful but He really was desperate.
As he continued his exploration, he found himself in a poorer part of the city. The buildings here were more rundown, and the people looked weary and were on there last leg. Beast Boy's heart ached for them, and he wished he could do something to help.
As he moved through a dark alley, hoping to avoid the busiest parts of the city, he heard a commotion ahead. Curious, he edged closer and saw three men surrounding a trembling merchant.
"Hand over your coin, old man, and we might let you go," one of the bandits snarled, brandishing a dagger.
The merchant pleaded, "Please, I have a family. This money is all we have."
Beast Boy listened carefully, making sure he understood the situation. He didn't want to simply jump in but listening for sometime, It was clear the merchant was the victim.
Quietly, he transformed into a wolf, his green fur blending into the shadows. He crept closer, waiting for the right moment to strike.
"You've got until the count of three," the lead bandit threatened, raising his dagger.
Beast Boy lunged, knocking the bandit to the ground, The Green wolf bit the man's wrist forcing him to drop his weapon. The second bandit reacted quickly, swinging a club at Beast Boy, but he transformed into a snake, slithering around the club and coiling around the bandit's legs, causing him to trip and fall.
The third bandit drew his sword, his hands shaking. Beast Boy shifted into a bear, towering over him with a menacing growl. The bandit hesitated for a moment before turning and fleeing. The second bandit got back up but just as quickly fell down unconscious when he received a back hand from the bear.
Beast Boy morphed back into his human form and turned to the merchant, who was staring at him with wide eyes. "Thank you," the merchant stammered, "Kind Goblin Sir, please have mercy on me."
"I'm not a goblin," Beast Boy said looking directly at him, a smile of the shapeshifters face. "Just someone trying to help."
The merchant blinked in astonishment but nodded gratefully before running from there. Beast Boy searched the fallen bandit, finding a small pouch of coins and the cloak. "Sorry, buddy," he muttered, "but I need this more than you do."
Donning the cloak, Beast Boy pulled the hood low over his face, effectively concealing his green skin. He pocketed the coins, thinking they might come in handy later.
He wandered into a small tavern, hoping to overhear some useful information. The interior was dimly lit, with wooden tables and benches filled with patrons enjoying their morning ale. The air was thick with the smell of smoke and spilled beer. Beast Boy approached the bar and bought an ale, then moved to a quiet corner at the back of the room.
Sitting down, he subtly morphed his ears into those of a bat, amplifying his hearing. The conversations around him came into sharp focus, each voice distinct and clear.
"Did you hear about the hero summoning?" a man at a nearby table whispered to his companion. "It seems the was trying to summon a mighty champion, but failed completely and that came was a mimic goblin."
"What a joke," one noble man said, rolling his eyes. "The king's hero summoning spell went wrong, and now we have a goblin instead of a hero. Can you imagine? A goblin, of all things!"
"No surprise there," his companion replied. "The king's grasping at straws, trying to find a way to secure his power. But this? It's embarrassing. People are laughing about this, saying it shows just how desperate and incompetent the king really is. We need a true kimg, someone who can lead us and protect us."
Beast Boy's ears perked up at this. So the summoning spell had been meant to bring a hero, but something went wrong and they got him.
At another table, a group of merchants were deep in discussion. "Trade's been slow," one of them said angrily. "The routes are dangerous with all the bandits and rebels around. And if that wasn't enough, the neighboring kingdom is closing its borders."
"Aye," another merchant agreed. "Goods are getting scarce, and prices are soaring. If this keeps up, there'll be a famine before long."
"The king needs to do something," a third merchant added. "But all he seems to care about is his own power. He's taxing us to death, and for what? To keep us safe? Ha!"
His companion signed before muttering "if this keeps up i a moving to another kingdom "
Beast Boy noted the merchants' frustrations. The kingdom was struggling economically, and it seemed the king's policies were doing more harm than good.
Across the room, a group of soldiers were talking about a dungeon.
"The northern dungeon, man," a soldier sighed. "Why do they keep sending us there?"
"Orders from above," his comrade replied. "They think there's something valuable down there. But past floor eleven, it's hell. The tunnels open into this vast jungle, and the creatures... they're like nothing we've ever seen."
"Aye," another soldier agreed. "I've seen orks with skin like iron, and goblins that can cast spells. Not to mention the traps. One wrong step, and you're done for."
"Anyone who makes it past the eleventh floor deserves a medal," the first soldier said. "Or a good stiff drink. It's a miracle if you come back at all."
The soldiers nodded in solemn agreement, the weight of their experiences clear in their eyes.
Beast Boy absorbed all this information, trying to piece together a plan. The kingdom was on the brink of war, the king was a tyrant, and there was a dangerous dungeon in the north filled with monsters. And in the midst of it all, a hero was supposed to have been summoned but instead, they got him.
Beast boy closed his eye's and gently rubbed his head. "This is not going to be a short journey"
