A/N: A shout out to my anonymous reviewer! Wedding here we come. ;) Glad you liked it. Thanks!
Chapter 4
The wedding went off without a hitch after that first bump in the road. The royal garden had been completely transformed. What was ordinarily a pretty beautiful spot to Elphaba had been transformed into one that was fit for the biggest wedding Oz had seen in quite some time.
Archways had been erected over the main walkway. While the walkway stones had been covered with a sage green fabric, the archways were covered in fresh flowers, which had been woven into long garlands. Pink, white, purple, and darker yellow flowers went well with the green that was inherently everywhere.
The guests stood as Glinda came down the aisle with her father. This was not out of the ordinary – as far as anyone could remember. The last female leader of Oz did not get married while she held her position, so standard tradition applied here. Also, Glinda would not have her Popsicle sit by without being part of her wedding. She wanted to be walked down the aisle just like she'd fantasized since she was a child.
While the blonde had not imagined that the wedding would be a "royal" one – as part of being the leader of Oz - she was glad that things were moving so smoothly. She was enjoying every minute of it especially when she saw the look on Bayram's face when she made her appearance at the beginning of the now arched walkway. Her floor length white dress had a sweetheart corset bodice and a frosted floral embroidery on the lightweight mermaid tulle – it was the only way to get pink into the dress that the dressmaker would agree to.
"Ladies and Gentlemen – may I present Lord and Lady Bayram, Leaders of Oz," Judge Mikhail announced to the crowd. He had been asked if he would perform the ceremony, since the church was not going to be involved. Mikhail had said it would be his greatest honor.
Once the announcement had been made, the leaders of the rest of Oz stood from their seats. They bowed or curtseyed as was tradition, while the happy couple walked past the rows of chairs that had been brought outside and placed on either side of the main walkway.
Fiyero met Elphaba at the end of the walkway, near where Glinda and her now husband Bayram were wed. He took her hand and they walked after the couple and into the Palace, with the rest of the wedding party following suit. Dinner and dancing would soon commence but first the married couple had to make their appearance to the rest of Oz. Usually, the procession back to the Palace would serve as that appearance, so in order to make up for it, Glinda had decided that they would go to the top of the Palace wall. The next day, they would ride through the city on their way to Gillikin for their honeymoon.
"So, I guess I had no idea that Bayram's first name was Halim," Elphaba commented as they made their way to the reception. The post wedding festivities were going to be held in the large dining room and ballroom.
"You get used to calling them Lieutenant this or Sergeant that so transitioning to using their last names by themselves isn't so odd. Of course, given our position in society, typically, we wouldn't be on a first name basis with our soldiers. We're a little different so we do know some of them but we don't use them in front of others," Fiyero said.
"Point. I hope Glinda enjoyed the ceremony," Elphaba was concerned, especially since her friend had been complaining about her makeup.
"She'll be fine. The party is going to be what she worries about," he gave her a wink.
"So, has this given you two any ideas?" King Tahir asked from behind them. The guests were all finding their seats for dinner and of course Fiyero's parents were going to be seated near them.
"It makes Elphaba a little green around the gills," her future husband chuckled. She smacked his arm for making such a bad joke.
"He's not wrong. Planning our wedding is making me anxious," Elphaba admitted.
"Being the center of attention is not your thing, I understand that," Queen Ayla gave her future daughter-in-law a smile.
"I wasn't like Glinda. She had this day planned when she was five. I… I didn't think it would ever happen, so I didn't think about it at all," the green woman said. Queen Ayla pulled her into a hug.
"I am thrilled to have you be my daughter," the Queen told her.
"I have no words for how much it means to me to be part of your family," Elphaba said.
"Ladies and Gentlemen, please take your seats. Lord and Lady Bayram will be joining us momentarily," now Lieutenant Zeki announced. Bayram promoted him the night before after relinquishing his position as part of the Gale Force. Sergeant Duncan was promoted as well to be next in line for a Lieutenant position. While it did not change his uniform, it changed his pay, which was more than amenable to the soldier.
A few more minutes passed and then the newly wedded couple joined the room to a thunderous applause. Glinda was loving it, while Elphaba could have sworn that Bayram was turning red. He too was struggling but he straightened himself up and made sure to guide Glinda to the head table. Once they were seated, Mr. Samuels and his crew of kitchen workers, dressed in suits and dresses came out of the kitchen to deliver the meal's first course, initiating the next part of the evening. The party that was to come afterward would be talked about until Fiyero and Elphaba got married the next year.
