We Will Always be Together

Six or Seven years before "Boy Meets World" but after "I Bought You a Ticket."

Cory was unhappy today.

He kept staring at the ground and he wouldn't play on the jungle gym or the swings. Topanga knew the jungle gym had always made him nervous, but usually he would do it with her. And nothing would normally stop Cory from those swings.

"Cory what's wrong?" Topanga finally said after he'd been staring at the ground for too long. "You don't want to do anything today."

"My mom told me she's having a baby," his eyes darted toward his mother, who was sitting on the bench, before returning to stare at the ground.

Excitement swelled inside Topanga. A new baby at the Mathews would be so much fun. Topanga had a couple of dolls at home, but a real baby would be even better. "That's great, isn't it? We'll have someone new to play with." She could already picture herself dressing the new baby and pushing it in the stroller.

Cory shrugged, still not looking up. "I guess, but Mom said the baby might be a sister. I always thought…well that you were my sister, Topanga. Because we'll always be together."

Topanga melted faster than an ice cream cone at his words. "That's what I think, too." What would her life be without Cory?

His eyes dared to glance at her, and her heart broke at how sad they were. "But if I get real sister…, then what are you? How will we always be together?"

Topanga thought for a moment, desperate to find an answer that would both make him happy and allow them to always be together. "We could be married," she said a huge smile spreading across her face. "Husband and wives aren't sisters and brothers, but Jedediah and Chloe say they'll be together as long as Father Sky touches Mother Earth."

Cory's smile was even brighter than hers. "That's a great idea, Topanga. I mean… wife." He hugged her tightly. "But we'd need rings. Mom and Dad wear wedding rings." He searched his pockets, as if rings would magically appear there since they'd started talking about this.

Shaking her head, Topanga started to say that rings were unnecessary for a commitment of the soul. That's what Jedediah and Chloe always said.

But then Cory picked two blades of grass with a triumphant grin. "We can wrap these around our fingers." Gently, he wrapped the piece of grass around Topanga's finger, and her heart became ice cream soup.

In return, she did the same to Cory's finger. "There. Now we'll be together as long as Father Sky touches Mother Earth, no matter whether you get a new sister or not." They both hugged, as if they were tangled into each other as much as the blades of grass.

When they withdrew, Cory's eyes landed on the swing. With that, he dashed toward them, and Topanga raced to catch up. "There are two swings free," he said with a big grin as he pointed to them side-by-side.

This was the Cory she knew. The one who was always raced to the swings and loved to play with her. He was right. They'd always be together.

Girl Meets World appears to have forgotten it, but it's canon that Cory and Topanga used to call each other "husband and wife" when they were five. Check out the flashback in season five when they first meet Shawn.
