Even Keen Eyes Can't See Everything

Warning: Violence, Profanities, and Abuse

Chapter 1

Mia sat in her office. She leaned back in her chair and sighed heavily. These last few cases had weighed on her. Mia was the BAU's Communications Liaison. After Agent Jareau had left, Mia had taken her place. Agent Jareau had returned to assist in rescuing Agent Prentiss. It's been a few months since then. Agent doesn't want her old position back, but the rest of the team still treats Mia differently. Agent Rossi seems annoyed whenever she asks anything that to a Profiler, would be obvious. Dr. Reid seems always to avoid her. Agent Morgan never flirted with her, which she didn't mind. Agent Hotch didn't smile as much with Mia as he did with the team. Agent Prentiss didn't seem to acknowledge Mia sometimes when Agent Jareau was around. Agent Jareau wasn't unkind, but neither Mia nor her were close either. Garcia had a nickname for Mia but stopped using it when Agent Jareau returned.

"Agent Winter?" called a voice from outside the door. Mia jumped. She had been deep in thought. She was glad that the blinds to her officer were closed.

"Come in," Mia said quickly. the door opens. Agent Jareau enters the office. She looks around. Then she takes a seat across from Mia. She smiled warmly at Mia.

"The team has told me a lot about you." Agent Jareau says friendly. "They say you're a warm person."

Mia raised an eyebrow. "Really?" she asked, genially surprised. "I wasn't expecting my name to come up in any conversations anymore. It was true. In the reports that the team gave her, whenever they wrote about her, they said she was friendly, kind, warmhearted, supportive, and an empathetic person.

Agent Jareau shrugged. "I may have read a report or two."

Mia smiled softly. "Is there something you needed, Agent Jareau?" Mia asked in a little bit more of a serious tone.

Agent Jareau shook her head. "No. I just wanted to get to know you. You seem like an interesting person."

Mia stared at the older woman for a moment. It had been at least a month since someone had wanted to talk to her. "What do you want to know?" Mia asked after a moment.

"First off, you can call me JJ. Only people I don't know call me Agent Jareau. Secondly, How old are you?" JJ looked at the younger Agent. Mia had long, dark brown hair, longer than Emily's hair. But Mia didn't have bangs. Mia was Asian, but she had crystal blue eyes, like JJ's. JJ looked around her former office again. It was much more organized. that was another thing to add to Mia's list of good traits.

"I'm 28," Mia responded. "And if you're ok with me calling you JJ, then you can call me Mia." Mia was glad that she might be about to make another friend. The BAU was the closest thing to the family that Mia had now.

"I was around that age when I joined too," JJ said. "Why did you join the FBI? And why the BAU?" JJ was legitimately curious. Ever since JJ had returned from her assignment, the team seemed different. They were delighted to be with her, but JJ noticed they weren't as open or friendly towards Mia.

"Well, I went to college in LA to study criminology." Mia started. "After I graduated, I went to the police academy. After I graduated from the police academy, I joined the LAPD." Mia took a moment to think carefully about her next words. "While I was a rookie, there were a few complications…" Mia's words drifted off. She quickly forced her expression to go back to normal. She hoped that JJ had not seen the dark cloud lingering over her mind now.

"What kind of complications?" JJ asked in a softened voice. She recognized the look in Mia's eyes. Mia's gaze fell the her hands that were neatly placed in her lap. JJ tilted her head. "Mia?"

"It was nothing much," Mia said with a lighter tone. She was trying to lighten the mood. "Anyways, after my third year as a police officer, I decided to move on. So, I joined the FBI. The FBI was similar to police work….. but different." Mia paused for a moment. "I worked as a Communications Liaison for the Hostage Unit in Wisconsin for a year, I was assigned to the BAU."

JJ nodded in response. Her eyes were full of sympathy. It looked like she was almost pitying Mia. "Did you grow up in LA?" JJ asked. softly. "Why didn't you take a job at one of the FBI's field offices there?"

Mia shrugged. This conversation was getting very personal. Mia didn't exactly like to discuss her past. "I wanted change."

JJ nodded, but even Mia could see the skepticism in her expression. "Do you have any family in LA?"

Mia opened her mouth too, but before anything came out, Agent Hotchner knocked on the door.

"Agent Winter, there's a case I want you to take a look at. It's-." Hotch paused when he saw JJ. His expression softened only slightly. "Oh, Hello, JJ."

JJ nodded and left the office to let Mia and Agent Hotchner discuss a new case. Agent Hotchner took the seat across from Mia. "Like I was saying before, a new case has arisen. The LAPD has requested our help urgently. They have three murders on their hands. Each murder is completely different, from victimology to status, to everything." He set a small stack of files on Mia's desk.

Mia nodded silently. She was a little uneasy about going back to LA. "Ok, I can prepare a briefing that can be presented first thing tomorrow morning." Mia purposed.

Agent Hotchner nodded approvingly. "That sounds fine." He got up to leave. He glanced back at Mia. "One other thing, Agent Winter." Agent Hotch began. Mia looked up from the files that she had already started working on. "Something that is not in the files that is a necessary part of the case is that all of the victims had an unusual feature. The first victim was Asian and she had naturally red hair. The second victim had a skin disease that caused patches of their skin to become lighter or darker. The last victim was a black male with a sixth finger."

Mia frowned. "Wait. Why wasn't this written in the files?"

"The LAPD didn't want anyone with any sort of difference to panic." Agent Hotchner said. It was a logical choice. He left the office. Mia was left alone with her thoughts. She got started on preparing the briefing.

The next morning, Mia came to work early. She got all of the slides for the briefing prepared. Then she sat down in her seat at the round table. After a few minutes, the rest of the team arrived. Mia briefed them all. Then, everyone boarded the jet. Mia sat alone, like always. She quietly continued going through the files for the case.
