Just a little one shot as the excitement builds towards season 12.
"Hold it right there Mr Burgess."
Adam stopped mid-step. Platt had her hands flat on the flat desk and looked at him over the top of her glasses.
"Mr Burgess?" he titled his head and looked confused. "Really?"
"Yes." She held up one hand when he stepped towards the stairs. "I said wait."
Platt was talking to a patrol officer that he'd seen once or twice in the District in the past week or so. He knew they had a few newbies around and assumed she was one of them. "Hey." He nodded at the uniformed cop as he rested his hip on the desk to wait for the Sergeant to finish. She looked fresh as a daisy and he felt sorry for her and Platt certainly hadn't mellowed with age and he did ponder how much he should warn her about dealing with the master.
Adam's phone buzzed in his pocket and before he had the chance to look at it Platt snatched it from his hand and rejected the call. "This is Officer Kiana Cook, she is working with you today. Do not…. And I mean DO NOT lead her astray, damage any cars, shoot anyone, teach her any of your shortcuts, bad language or encourage her to break any laws, policies or regulations."
"Geez Sarge… anything else?"
"Yes….." Platt pushed a pile of papers together in front of her. "Do you want me to say it?"
"No."
Platt ignored him and ploughed on. "Let's not have a repeat of the last time you were engaged and worked with one of my patrol officers?"
"I met the woman of my dreams?" Adam leant on the desk and blew Platt a kiss. "That's you sarge but you broke my heart when you never asked me for a second date. I never recovered."
"You wish I asked you for a second date."
He turned to face the newbie and offered his hand, ignoring Platt completely. "Hey, good to meet you. Don't worry about her." He nodded his head at the grumpy desk sergeant, although he knew he was going to pay for that at some point. "We'll have fun. I'll be on my best behaviour."
The young officer thrust out her hand and Adam shook it quickly. "Nice to meet you Officer Burgess."
Trudy snorted. "Officer Burgess." She repeated with a chuckle.
"You okay there Sarge? Need some water?" He didn't even look at Platt. "It's Officer Ruzek, actually. People either call me Adam or Ruzek, don't mind either."
"Or PITA." Platt muttered under her breath.
"Oh sorry, I thought it was Officer Burgess."
"He's getting married, and I think it makes much more sense if you change your name. Firstly, Ruzek.. Disco Bob didn't exactly leave that name a great legacy now did he?" She didn't even wait for Adam to respond. "And secondly, why instead of changing two names you could do the right thing and just change yours, and thirdly….." Adam sighed. "I am sick of writing your name on my reports."
"Well thanks for your input Mrs Mulholland."
"That's Sergeant Platt to you, now go away." She shooed him and indicated that Kiana should follow him. "And do not break my patrol officer or I will have you back on patrol yourself before you can even lick your lips."
Adam paused at the gate to punch in his code. "Sorry about that. I want to say she gets better the longer you know her, but I can't lie. She doesn't."
"Congratulations on your wedding… engagement… when's the wedding?"
"Thanks, in Spring, Kim loves spring and we are excited. My girls are loving every minute of it."
"You've got kids?"
"We have a daughter, came to us ready-made." Adam's face lit up. "Keeps us in a constant state of chaos though."
"I'm looking forward to today. Platt actually had good things to say about Intelligence." Everyone knew about this Unit but it was almost mythical, you knew about them but you had no idea what they did. The rumours swirled around CPD, some good, some bad and it intrigued her. She set her sights on the 21st just to get in front of it. She didn't want to be on Patrol forever, she didn't join to be a beat cop.
"One thing you will learn about Platt is that she has two hands, and you never know which one she will pull out of behind her back. She'll ride your ass, and you'll be better for it, but never doubt she will go to war for her police." He pointed to a spare desk. "Perch your gear there, grab a coffee if you want."
She followed Adam into the break room. "What was that about your name? Your Dad was a cop?" Clearly she didn't miss a thing.
"He was, he was a beat cop. Got old, got into debt and is now living it up in Miami." Adam filled his mug and offered to fill one for her and she shook her head.
"I prefer tea."
Replacing the pot he chuckled. "Are you really a cop?"
"I am. Burgess is a cop too?"
"Yep she is. Kim is my partner, my fiancée, love of my life, reason for living, quite literally and probably the best cop I know. You should definitely spend some time with her. She's kinda a legend." Adam winked. "Complete stunner."
"Wow, I feel intimidated."
"Oh she will love you, she is always yapping about having another female cop around to break up the testosterone." Adam chuckled. "It's been too heavy on the male hormones for way too long."
Kiana was sure they had another female Detective up here for a few years but bit her tongue. She was curious though. "What should I know about being up here?"
"Don't eat my food." Adam quipped back instantly and then laughed.
"Okay, weird, but okay. Why would I eat your food?"
Adam headed back out of the break room. "It's happened before, but seriously, keep your head down but don't be afraid to speak up when you've got information or an idea. Do as Voight says, don't lie to him or us. If you stuff up admit it. We all make mistakes, and if you are not sure, ask."
"Anything else?"
"You've made it this far, that means both Platt and Voight think you can handle it. Embrace the ride." Adam sat down at his desk while Kiana bounced nervously on the balls of her feet. "Hey, I've got your back, you get mine and it will all be fine. How long you been on the job?"
"Three years, doing patrol, some tac work, and I really wanted to see what this was all about so busted my ass to get to the 21st." Kiana was clearly enthusiastic. "How did you get here?"
"You haven't heard? Everyone seems to know?" Adam raised an eyebrow at her. He was constantly reminded about his un-orthodox arrival. "They needed a clean skin for a drug bust & I was pulled out of the academy." He shrugged. "Never left, learnt on the fly and it was intense & a dream come true all at once. One thing you will learn about Intelligence is that anything can and will happen."
"Can't wait." She jiggled a little.
"Okay, let's go then." Adam grabbed his coat. "Let's go save Chicago."
Kiana followed him down the stairs and deliberately took her out past the front desk. "Off to save the streets Mrs Mulholland. You want us to bring you back some lunch?"
"I can bust you down to Patrol with one phone call." She reached for the phone on her desk to make a point. "Your decision."
"Have a good day Sarge." Adam waved his hand over his head as they headed out the front steps. "So, what's your story? Anyone who's coming after me if you get hurt?"
"Nope, except my Dad."
"Noted."
"You get on well with Sergeant Platt then?" Kiana had laughed at his per functionary nod as they climbed into his car. "She's got such a reputation."
"Looks can be deceiving. She loves Kim, so by default she tolerates me. I know where I am in the pecking order. Even Kim's had to swallow her pride when she was bumped down below Mack." Adam snorted a little. They all thought Mack's nickname for Platt was cute, she just didn't want the whole District knowing. "Nanty is Mack's favorite person the whole world apparently. Followed by Uncle Kev and his brother Jordan."
Their day was insane and by the time they made it back to the District they were exhausted, battle scarred and ready to go home and hide from the world. Platt was waiting for them. "Well you look like you've earned your pay today. What happened?"
"You know what happened, you've been on the radio all day." Adam was not in the mood to talk anymore, he just wanted to go home and hug his girls.
"She is in one piece, doesn't look terrified of you and is still smiling."
"You know your wish was always my command Sarge." He winked, "Anytime you want that second date, I'd ditch the fiancé for you."
He disappeared upstairs and Platt turned to Kiana. "So?"
"Intense, more intense than I imagined but it was a good day. He told me some stories." She smiled cheekily. "Very interesting."
Platt beckoned her closer. "Do not fall for it. He's trying to cause trouble."
"He said you are the best Sergeant and cop he's ever worked with."
"Huh." Platt tried to hide a smile. "Did he just?"
"Goodnight Sarge, and thanks for today. Best day as a cop."
