Chapter 1: A NetBattler, a Witch and a New Life
Luz Noceda, at thirteen years old, looked out the window as explosions went off at various locations around DenTech City. She looked to her Axess PET, checking the news, before a Latino man walked up to her, patting her on the shoulder. Looking up, she saw her father, Manny Noceda, smiling at her with reassurance.
"Are we safe?" Luz asked.
"As long as people are fighting for us, we will be," Manny said. "The Security Navis will make sure that ShadeMan or Regal don't get an inch of this place, but we need to focus on making sure every patient here is well enough to make it out. Until then, can you put on a brave face for me?"
Luz smiled. "I can." She promised.
"Good," Manny said as the skies suddenly lit up. "What the–?"
Luz looked out the window and saw a giant dome start to cover the city. However, instead of ending at the outskirts, it expanded. She and her father saw a tower where the Darkloid Leader, ShadeMan, was charging towards. From it came a light, and for a moment, the former energy scientist, Dr. Regal, was seen, before his NetNavi, LaserMan, took his place. With only a few brutal moves, he was able to literally disarm ShadeMan before blasting him into oblivion.
"ShadeMan, Deleted."
"Luz, keep that brave face," Manny said before kneeling down to her daughter's level. "And hold onto this. I got it the other day with you in mind. Might help with that imagination of yours."
Luz looked to see the title of the book, The Good Witch Azura. "I'll be sure to read it." She promised.
"Dr. Noceda, almost everyone is out," a Security Navi said, speaking from Manny's PET. "There are shuttles coming to help take them to the nearest shelter."
"I'll meet them soon," Manny said before holding Luz's hand. "Stay close to me." He said, guiding Luz down the steps.
It took several hours for the shuttles to arrive. When they did, a girl with green hair and a brown headband came out. This was Sal.
"Net Agent Sal reporting," Sal said. "Everyone, board the shuttles carefully. We leave for shelter once everyone is on board."
"Here we go," Manny said, helping several people into the shuttles. "Watch your step. Make sure you have plenty of room."
"You can do it, Papa," Luz said. "Si Se Puede."
With Sal's help, everyone was loaded onto the shuttles. Manny made his way to a car and turned to Sal. "Go on ahead, we'll be with you once we meet up with Masa!"
"Be careful!" Sal called out before getting back in. She drove off with her convoy before Manny got Luz into the car. As they drove off, a rumbling was heard.
"We have a special report," news anchorwoman Ribitta said over the radios and on the television screens all over. "A giant NetNavi has appeared and is destroying the streets of DenTech City—"
"Look out!"
Hearing the cry of the hermit nearby, Manny swerved to avoid getting hit by the debris of the screen that was just shot apart. A large laser continued to blast around them before they were forced out, with Manny throwing Luz to a nearby bench.
"Get to safety!" Luz heard her father yell before falling unconscious from a blow to her head.
When Luz came to, she saw everything wrecked around her. She felt her head before seeing the car. Upon seeing faint movement, she gasped and ran over. Underneath several tires and debris was her father, coughing heavily.
"Papa!" Luz called out, running over. She knocked all the debris aside and placed her head to his chest. Panting nervously, she got him up onto his feet as best as she could before seeing a truck. Quickly, she helped guide her father over to it in the hopes of using the truck to get to safety, but it was suddenly shot. Shot by the same laser that attacked before. Looking up, she saw LaserMan now making his way over. Still keeping a brave face, she took out her PET. She did not know what she was about to do yet, but hoped for anything to make this monster disappear.
Or she would have until she heard a voice.
"Dr. Regal!"
Luz turned to the top of the building behind her, and on top of it was the familiar face of Lan Hikari. She had seen his fights in the N1 Grand Prix, but never in person. She awed at how bravely he stood, unflinching even when Dr. Regal was staring dangerously at him.
"This is as far as you're going! Synchro Chip In, Download!"
Luz watched as Lan held out his PET. "Begin CrossFusion Now!" he called out with the voice of his famed NetNavi, MegaMan. Five other Navi Crests seemed to fly into him before he transformed into MegaMan.
"Is that supposed to frighten me?" Dr. Regal asked.
With the silence that followed, Luz made her way to another vehicle before hearing Dr. Regal slam his fists down, only to get thrown back. A meteor attack, heard as Star Break Laser from an enraged LaserMan, came down, but she saw Lan send out a fire attack that cancelled them out before jumping up and sending down a lightning strike that caused the ground beneath LaserMan's foot to give away.
"Whoa…" Luz said in amazement before finally reaching another vehicle. Opening the door, she got her father in before collapsing onto the driver's seat, the last thing she saw of a CrossFused Lan and MegaMan being him making a direct shot at LaserMan's chest.
A few days later, it was over. The Dimensional Area that covered the Earth was gone, and so was Dr. Regal and LaserMan. From what Luz read and saw on news reports, Lan and MegaMan took him down single-handedly. But the next few days for her were not that fortunate.
Her father did not make it when they were found. A NetSavior named Raika from Sharo found the car and drove them to safety, to where Camila Noceda was waiting. To her complete sadness, Manny was severely injured after saving Luz, as well as a baby cat whose leg was caught in a crack on the road. He was given a hero's honor, and was buried at the Gravesfield Cemetery. The funeral had ended, and Luz was caught looking over her father's grave, the last of her long tears drying on her face.
"Mija, I was told that you helped carry Manny to the car before you passed out," Camila said, walking to bring her daughter in for a hug. "I'm proud of you for that. If not for you, then he wouldn't have lasted longer than he already did. He saved you, and you saved him."
"What do we do now?" Luz asked, sniffling.
"I've asked for time away from SciLab and the office so that we can finish moving in," Camila said. "I also heard you saw Lan and MegaMan up close before you passed out. Did they save you?"
"Yeah, they did," Luz said before seeing a small box in her mother's hand. "Is that… Dad's special chip?"
"It's a Synchro Chip that he was planning to use, but he told me that he wanted you to have it," Camila said, handing the box to her. Luz opened it, and indeed saw a Synchro Chip inside. "He also left a custom burn disk for your new NetNavi. What do you say to getting her ready when we get home?"
Luz looked to the Synchro Chip again while thinking back to Lan and MegaMan fighting Dr. Regal. Seeing the way they were fighting for everyone else lit a fire inside of her as she looked up to her mother again.
"I'd like that," Luz said. "And, Mama?"
"Yes, Mija?"
"I need to learn. NetBattling… and CrossFusion."
One Year Later…
In the Cyberworld of the Gravesfield High School, snake viruses were running rampant. However, as some of them were destroying the system, several were suddenly sent flying backwards. The snake viruses left looked over to see someone standing with a weapon of some kind aimed out.
The figure in question was a female NetNavi, taking on the appearance of a witch. She had side pieces of a helmet under her hat on her head, along with green hair flowing from the back. Her gauntlets and boots were both silver with purple trim, her bodysuit was a light black, and her Navi Crest had the symbol of a tiara with a star over it. In her right hand was a white staff with a crescent at the top, holding a blue orb in the center, and with a purple top handle that had gold rims at the end, as well as a trigger. It was held in a bazooka position at the moment, smoke coming out from the barrel.
"Anyone want to get out before we start the deleting?" the NetNavi asked.
In response, the viruses lunged at the NetNavi, who backflipped and continued to hold her staff like a firearm.
"Alright, Azura, we've only got these few left," Luz, now at fourteen, said through the current model of the PET, known as the Progress PET, which, for her, was purple and white, held the same Navi Crest on the bottom right corner, and had a dual grip to it. "You ready for the Battle Chips, or should I let you have a warm-up with these punks?"
At this age, Luz now wore a white and purple jacket with cat ears on the hoodie area. The same Navi Crest was sewn onto her right shoulder, she had leggings under a pair of denim shorts, and wore white loafers over her bare feet. She had a holster at her side for her PET, as well as a case that held her Battle Chips on the opposite side.
"I'll have them taste this first!" Azura remarked as she held out her weapon while in midair. "MagiBuster!" she called out, sending forth blasts of each element before landing, now facing at least sixteen more viruses. "Feel free to send them in." She said afterwards.
"ShotMeteor, Battle Chip In, Download!" Luz called out, slotting a Battle Chip into the side of the Progress PET.
"ShotMeteor, ready!" Azura called out, holding out her staff in a normal position. It lit up with a grey flame before nine meteors rained down on nine of the snakes, leaving only seven of them left. "Final Chip!"
"Here we go!" Luz called out, holding out a gold-rimmed Battle Chip. "Z-Saver, Battle Chip In, Download!"
Azura held out her staff out, letting the gem glow. It shifted to form into the blade of the Z-Saver, a bright navy glow to it. Now holding it as a handheld sword, Azura charged at the remaining viruses, taking them all out in a single slash. As soon as she passed them, she swung the blade down, a triumphant grin on her face.
"We did it, Luz!" Azura cheered as Luz smiled, seeing the result of the battle from the human world.
"We sure did," Luz said before pressing the Navi Crest on her PET. "Job well done. Time to come home now."
Azura nodded and closed her eyes, now starting to log out from the system.
"Azura, Logging Out."
Azura soon reappeared onto the screen of Luz's PET, starting to recover from the battle.
"We did good, Azura," Luz said as she walked down the halls out of the room, with other students minding their own business or chatting through their own PETs. "Though with all the good we did, I really hope it was enough to change the fact that we were called to the office on the way."
"Yeah, I know what you mean," Azura said. "But remember, we've been putting a lot of focus on NetBattling and helping to restore a lot of hope that was lost during the Nebula incident. Not that we haven't been putting aside time for school and social life, but it's becoming concerning to your teachers."
"At least you're by my side," Luz said as she entered the office, seeing her mother and the principal there. "Sorry I'm late," she apologized as she sat down. "Nonetheless, I did make sure to send you the report of what kept me before I could get caught up in any other nasty business. I'm sorry for that too."
"Actually, you're early," the principal said. "We're waiting on one other person."
"Who?" Luz asked before turning to Camila. "I thought this was about my actions."
"Well… not in the way you were thinking…" Camila admitted.
"I swear, Alyson started the fiasco with the cafeteria NetBattle," Luz said. "She may be rich, but it wasn't my—"
"Oh, she will answer for that."
Luz gasped and turned, seeing an elderly man in green enter, alongside a woman in pink. These were Chief Kiefer and his assistant, Manuela.
"The head of the NetPolice?!" Luz exclaimed. "Whatever it was, I'm so sorry!"
"Luz, please," Principal Hal said. "You're not in trouble."
"It's quite the opposite, in fact," Manuela said as she and Chief Kiefer made their way to stand across from Luz, in front of the principal's desk. "You've gotten our attention with all that you've done, and in just a few months after Dr. Regal was defeated too."
"So… all the stuff that happened when I was NetBattling and Virus-Busting…?" Luz asked.
"You beat Chaud and ProtoMan in an arcade NetBattle two weeks after getting your NetNavi," Camila said. "I am still fascinated by how you designed her too."
"Azura here?" Luz asked, pulling out her PET as Chief Kiefer approached her. She handed her device to him. "I modeled her after the book that my dad gave to me. The last thing he gave to me personally before… he…"
"I am sorry for your loss," Chief Kiefer said. "Manny Noceda was one of the finest model citizens out there, both for the human and cyber worlds. You were brave to help him evacuate that hospital. I am just sorry that we couldn't have gotten to him before his time came." He said as Manuela looked over Luz's PET.
"You have quite the interesting NetNavi here, this Azura," Manuela commented. "I've actually read that book you're referring to. The Good Witch Azura, very underrated. You've managed to blend in that titular character with your beginner Navi very well."
"I'm honored to hear it." Azura replied.
"Your school project was also a hit," Principal Hal said. "And I don't blame you for the actions that followed. I know the remnants from the Survival Seven attacking were just a coincidence, and not caused by you."
"But it still brings us to the reason why we were called in," Chief Kiefer said. "The NetPolice appreciates what you're doing, Luz Noceda, but… well, are you familiar with burnout?"
"The toxic mentality or the stress?" Luz asked.
"You really are a smart girl. It's the second one," Chief Kiefer mused. "Hard work and a willingness to contribute to society is good, but when one does it too much, it becomes too much for them. It is why we do not ask much of those who work for us. Why else do you think we don't call in Lan Hikari and MegaMan every day? They have school and like to NetBattle for fun."
"It would be the same for if Kim Possible were on constant missions with Miracle," Manuela said, pulling up from her PET recent footage of the teenage crime-fighter with her NetNavi from the cheer-offs from the previous year. "The best of the NetSaviors and NetPolice know when they are doing too much, and need a break."
"Which is what we are here for," Camila said, walking over to place her hand on her daughter's. "Mija, you've done so much for everyone, but you need time for yourself too. Time away from all of this."
"But I know there's more to do." Luz insisted.
"There will be others to help in the long-run until NetCity is back to its full former glory," Principal Hal said, taking out a flyer. "But your mother and I have been talking, and we think this camp should be good for you to rest back from all the work you've been placing on your shoulders."
"It takes you away from NetBattling for a while, but not forever," Camila went on as Luz picked up the flyer to see for herself. "You and Azura still get to be with each other, we won't separate you. But this camp is to help you reacclimatize socially. You need a break from this, Luz. And I promise, you will have plenty to do once you get back."
"Am I even getting a say in this?" Luz asked, looking up.
"It's not much of a DenTech University, but it's still a good experience," Manuela said. "I was once a camper there too. Rest assured, just know that we are doing this as a thanks for what you have done, and a way to show that you are not alone in all this."
Luz sat silent for a moment before muttering, "Then how come even with Azura… I still feel alone?"
Later, at the Noceda household, Luz was at her computer. She looked to the completed books of the series for The Good Witch Azura, with some tags that marked how many times they were reread. She sighed before turning back to her screen, seeing a display of programs that were being downloaded into her PET. As she was, she turned to an old phone by a bronze-rimmed extension chip. Sliding it into the port, it turned into a new Progress PET. Looking to it, she nodded before pocketing it away with other devices as well.
"I'm just playing the devil's advocate here," Azura spoke up. "I'm not agreeing completely, but they do have a point. You have been working a lot ever since we became NetNavi and NetOp. I hardly see you have any other fun aside from editing anime clips together or reading your books, or even writing the FanFic series that I've become COMPLETELY enamored by."
"Well, you're one of them," Luz said with a smile. "But before you even came, not many people were there to protect the cyber and human worlds," she said, seeing the downloads still being run. "And you know what that caused when Dr. Regal attacked."
"I miss him too, Luz," Azura sympathized. "But can you do me a favor?"
"What?"
"Don't EVER think you're alone in whatever you're going through," Azura replied. "You might have a small circle, but know that aside from me, there's always gonna be someone who will help you out."
Luz smiled once again. "Thanks, Azura," she said before seeing the progress was complete. She disconnected her PET from the computer's dock before packing up her Battle Chips. She looked to the Synchro Chip and stared long at it. "Are we ready for this yet?" she asked.
"Well, we're not officials, and there are now more people to take care of threats of the Cyberworld," Azura said. "If we are, we'll need to be very lucky to try and CrossFuse."
"Well, in case that happens, I'm not leaving this behind anymore," Luz said, pocketing the Synchro Chip away. "I hope you can see what we've accomplished so far, Papa," she said, looking to a photograph of her with her parents when she was younger. "I've kept that brave face, just as you would have wanted."
Camila was downstairs, looking to data on her own PET. She sighed at what was coming before putting it away and getting her bag. As she was, Luz came down, putting on her best smile for her.
"It won't be forever, I promise, Mija," Camila promised. "How about you go out and wait for the bus?" she suggested. "I still need to get something from upstairs."
"Okay, Mama," Luz said, hugging her mother. "Don't take too long."
Camila only chuckled as she went upstairs. Now alone, Luz walked out to the front, where she started to make her way to the bus stop. As she was, something caught her attention. Turning her head, she looked around to see what it was, but saw nothing.
"You feel that?" Luz asked as she reached for her PET, only for something to grab it. "What the—?"
On the ground, now holding her PET, was a small brown owl. Not only did it have her Progress PET, but also a tied sack. Hooting cutely, it hopped away to a shack, causing Luz to give chase.
"Azura, lock all access except for mine!" Luz called out.
"Locked!" Azura replied. "Hurry, Luz! Don't let me be Navi-napped!"
Without hesitation, Luz ran after the small owl, right into the shack. As soon as she did, a blinding light came, and she nearly stumbled. Still seeing the owl kept her on her feet as she ran out the other side of the door.
"Stop hopping away so adorably, you little—" Luz started before taking a look at her surroundings.
Instead of the interior of the shack that she had often come across before, it seemed to be a tent. She looked to everything before picking up a small doll.
"I know I've got a lot of strange stuff," Luz mused. "But this seems to take the cake."
"There you are!"
Luz gasped and hid behind a pile of junk. Upon seeing it, she raised an eyebrow before making her way to the front of the tent, where the owl came with the sack. Someone, a woman, based on the voice she had heard, placed him onto the top of a wooden shaft before going through the sack.
"Garbage, garbage… definitely garbage," the woman said, tossing away several items that Luz could tell were not garbage. She finally came across a pair of goggles with springs. "Now these will make me rich!" she exclaimed before seeing the PET. "What are you? An advanced scroll of some sort?" she asked, trying to swipe her finger across it. "Well, I guess you could make for a toy."
Luz picked up a small rock and tossed it to the front of the stand that the woman was at. She looked around before walking over.
"Anyone there?"
With the woman distracted, Luz sneaked over and grabbed her PET back. Cuddling it for a minute, she retreated back into the tent, Azura showing back up.
"Something about her was off." Azura whispered.
"Well, we've gotta go." Luz said. She was just about to go through the door until it seemed to fold up. She gasped and turned to see the woman standing there, arms on her hips.
"You're not going anywhere without that door." The woman said in a threatening tone.
Luz glanced back and forth from the woman to the rest of the tent. Quickly, she zipped to the back, lifting up the bottom and then running out.
"Should have worded that better."
"Luz, check this all out!" Azura called out as Luz was running off. "There's a whole new NetCity here! It's not even like the one back home!"
"Then where—?" Luz started before stopping at a cliff. She gasped as she saw not Gravesfield, but a whole town with a castle in the center. Looking down, she could see people who did not look human walking around, or doing whatever others would do, if they did not have either an extra eye, a disfigured face, a mouth for their hair, or even what appeared to be sentient pigs, dogs or cats.
"Where are we?"
"I'm still figuring that out," Azura replied, looking to the new NetCity with wonder. "Maybe there are Navis here who can help. I'll be back."
"Whoa," Luz said, still in awe as Azura left. "This is wild!" she exclaimed before seeing something small flying towards her. "Hello, little one," she said sweetly. "Are you gonna wake me and my partner up?"
"Give me your skin!" the small fairy yelled, showing off large teeth in her mouth.
Luz yelped and swatted the creature away.
"Did I end up in… the bad place?" Luz wondered.
As if on cue, the woman from before grabbed onto Luz's shoulder.
"You wish."
Inside of the new Cyberworld, Azura was looking around. "Hello?" she called out, keeping her MagiBuster staff ready in case of a surprise attack. "Any Navi here? Solo or operated!"
There was no response as Azura made her way to a data core. She looked around, scanning for anything that could come out and attack her, but again found nothing.
"That's strange," Azura said before going to the core. "Well, best get researching."
Azura's hat tip rotated to the front of her, and inserted itself into the core. As it was there, her eyes started to see all the data that flowed through.
"No security Navis? No police Navis? No other NetNavi of any kind?" Azura asked. "Where did we end up? Wait," she said, coming across something else. "Am I… the first NetNavi here?"
Back with Luz, she was finished helping the lady set up a television. Turned out she saw Luz as a potential customer, and her descriptions of what she was selling were way off. As soon as the television was set up, a workout video showing NetCity sensation Aki came up.
Everyone around was drawn to the sight and sound, and started to come closer.
"So enticing!"
"I'll pay 200 snails!"
"I'll pay 300!"
"Can I eat the tiny person inside?"
"Can I live with the tiny person inside?"
Everyone was placing prices for the television before hearing the last question. They, including Luz and the lady, turned to him with judgmental looks on their faces.
"I can ask, can't I?"
With that question, everyone else went back to what they were doing, with the lady and Luz recovering to glance at each other.
"What did you say your name was again?" the lady asked with an impressed grin on her face.
"Luz Noceda."
"Well, Luz, that was impressive thinking… for a human." The woman admitted.
"That's… strange for another human to say." Luz commented.
"Oh, dear child, I'm not like you," the lady said, removing her bandana to reveal that her ears were pointed. "I'm Eda, the Owl Lady! The most powerful witch of the Boiling Isles!"
"A witch?" Luz asked, stars in her eyes with wonder.
"I am respected, feared, loved…"
"Awesome!" Azura exclaimed back in the Cyberworld. "I really am the first NetNavi in this new place! But… there's something else here too," she said as she continued to look through the data. "Hmm, what an interesting energy signature," she noted, files on this new world being shown through her eyes. "It's almost like…" she started before her eyes widened. "No way!" she exclaimed. She looked up. "Luz, you won't believe this!"
"Kinda busy!" Luz yelled, now above the ground. She looked around, now flying on a floating staff with Eda, taking in her surroundings before spotting a Griffin flying by. Opening its mouth, she saw spiders come out from it. "I knew it!"
"Yep, we got everything here," Eda said before listing off the numerous myths from the human realm to Luz, "Griffins, vampires, giraffes…"
"Giraffes?" Luz asked with an eyebrow raised.
"Yeah, we banished those guys," Eda commented as she landed her staff. "Bunch of freaks."
Luz sat still to ponder this for a moment before spotting Eda's hand, still attached to the staff, causing her to yelp and fall off.
"Oh, sorry," Eda said, taking her hand and placing it back on, almost in a screwing fashion. "That happens sometimes."
"Well, this has been quite the adventure," Luz said, getting back up. "But I think it's safe to say this was not the fantasy world I had imagined, so I'll be going back." She said, reaching for the key, but Eda stopped her.
"First, I need you to help me with something, something that only a human like you can do," Eda said. "Then I'll let you go back. I saved you, so a little something for me too. Deal?"
"Sounds fair." Luz replied with a shrug.
"Good," Eda said, leading Luz to a house by the cliff outside of the clearing of the forest they had landed in. "This way, human."
"It's Luz," Luz corrected. "And aren't you afraid that those guards will come after us again?"
"Relax," Eda waved off. "I've got a state of the art security system."
Luz just watched as Eda approached the door, where a face of an owl was. Much to her surprise, the eyes of it opened, revealing it to be sentient.
"Password please." The door owl said, only for Eda to poke both of his eyes, causing him to yelp.
"We've got no time for this, Hooty," Eda said. "Let us in."
"Alright, alright! You never want to have any fun!" Hooty complained. "Ouch! Hoot!"
With that, Hooty opened his mouth, allowing for Eda to step in. Luz's eyes were wide at the sight, but she still followed after her, after which Hooty's mouth closed.
"Welcome to the Owl House," Eda said, snapping her fingers to get the lights to turn on. "Where I hide away from the pressures of society… also cops, ex-boyfriends, ex-girlfriends, and ex-enbyfriend… most of the time."
"Do you live here alone?" Luz asked.
At that moment, loud footsteps were heard, getting Luz on alert while Eda looked deadpan.
"Actually, I have a roommate…"
"Who dares intrude upon I?" a deep voice asked as a tall shadow appeared from the hall around the corner. However, upon turning, the voice changed to a smaller one, and seen casting the shadow was a small creature with black fur, a skull with a broken horn, and gold eyes, as he finished with, "The King of Demons?"
It did not take long for a blush to appear on Luz's face as the creature squeaked a rubber duck in his hands.
"¡Ay Que Lindo!" Luz exclaimed, running and scooping the creature up in a hug, causing his towel and rubber ducky to drop. She immediately hugged him close to her face. "Eda, he's so cute!" she gushed. "Who's a widdle guy? Who's a widdle guy? Is it you? Is it you?" she continued gushing before hugging the creature again.
"No! I don't know who your little guy is!" the creature yelled, trying to get free. "Eda, who is this monster?!"
"Oh, this is Luz, the human," Eda said, playfully pulling Luz away as she tried to grab a hold of the creature again. "She's here to help us with our problem, King."
"Oh, hooray!" the creature, now known as King, exclaimed.
"Already making friends here, I see," Azura said, causing Eda and King to look around for the source of the voice. "Big step from how things were back home."
"Who said that?!" King exclaimed.
Luz chuckled and pulled out her PET. "Well, I didn't expect to even be here, but it's getting fun," she said as Eda and King hovered around her. "You find anything, Azura?"
"Plenty," Azura replied before seeing the looks of awe that were being sent at her. "Oh, hello."
"Wait, this works for you, but not for me?" Eda asked.
"Oh, it's just a precaution in case it gets stolen," Luz explained. "Don't you have NetNavis here?"
"Net… what?" Eda asked.
Hooty stretched his neck over. "Hi, little girl!" he called. "Wanna come out?"
"Ooh, wish I could," Azura said, half-joking. "Can't, though."
"You have a minion in there?" King asked. "I want one!"
"Not for sale, and it's hard to make one," Luz said. "And Azura isn't my minion. She's my partner and friend."
"Well, as long as there are more hands for the job, the better," Eda said before using her staff to draw an illustration in the air of light. "Long ago, King was once a mighty king of demons, until his Crown of Power was stolen, and he became… this." She said as Luz was now playing with King again.
"The crown is being held by the evil Warden Wrath and locked away behind a magical force field that only a human can break through." Eda went on, trying not to laugh at King's predicament.
"You mean me and Azura?" Luz asked.
"Yes, a human like you," Eda confirmed. "If you help us retrieve his crown, we'll send you back to your realm. So whaddya say?" she asked before picking up King by his face and shaking him gently. "Plus, who could say no to this cute face?"
"No! Don't encourage her!" King pleaded.
"I guess so," Luz said. "You're my only way back home, after all."
"Before we go through with this, Luz, there's something I should probably tell you." Azura said.
"Sure, shoot." Luz said, turning to her PET again.
"In private."
Luz nodded before turning to Eda. "There another room I can use?" she asked.
"There's an empty one upstairs, the only free one I've got," Eda said. "You can't miss it."
Luz nodded before making her way up the steps. As soon as she found the room, she entered.
"What is it?" Luz asked.
"Well, I did my search as you said," Azura said in the Cyberworld. "Not sure what you got into, but I discovered a lot, which includes me being the only NetNavi in this realm."
"You mean this place has been untouched?" Luz asked.
"As far as I can tell, and the NetCity I found is empty. Looks like the one you were in, but with a more… Victorian feel to it."
"What else?"
"Well, the realm is giving off a familiar energy signature," Azura went on. "I can't say for certain, but I recognize it as the same one used for a Dimensional Area."
"Whoa," Luz replied. "You're serious?"
"Yeah, the exact same as the one that covered the Earth," Azura confirmed. "But I think it means we could probably test out the Synchro Chip. It's a theory, but if the energy is the same, we should be able to CrossFuse."
"Well, there's good news, at least," Luz said, unaware of a dark energy gathering outside of the Owl House. "We can test it out later. Right now, we've got a crown to get."
Later on, once Luz was ready, she, Eda and King stood outside of a large structure, almost resembling a prison. Luz took one look at it and shivered, remembering the giant Dimensional Area Tower once used by Dr. Regal, and the casualties that followed from its erection.
"The Conformatorium," Eda said. "Where the Emperor sends those who don't fit in with society."
"I don't like this," Luz admitted. "Makes me think of something just as intimidating back home. They used Navis like Azura to power it."
"I know it looks troubling, I really do," Eda said. "But we won't be here for long, I promise. And I always keep my promises."
"Except with Rai—"
"Not the time!" Eda cut King off. She turned back to Luz. "While I sneak around back, you and King will go through the top, and we'll meet at the contraband."
"Nice plan, but I got to ask something," Luz said, dismissing several wanted posters of Eda and King, now trying to find something certain. "What do you use for storing information? Or watching a favorite show."
"Those would be crystal balls," Eda said. "But what does that have to do with anything?"
"Azura can help, I just need to find the crystal ball that connects with all the others in this place." Luz explained.
"Well, they leave the main one here unguarded," King said, gesturing to a crystal ball by the back gate. "Not that anyone can do anything permanent by browsing or streaming."
"Oh, just you watch," Luz said, grinning. She took out her Progress PET and attached the grip to it, placing it in front of her like a gun. "Okay, you're up!" she called out, pulling the PET back. "Jack In! Azura, Power Up!" she called out.
With that, a red laser shot from the end of the Progress PET, getting sent into the crystal ball. Eda and King watched with amazement before Luz activated the holographic screen, showing Azura getting sent into the system, which seemed to have a more magical appearance compared to the normal network systems back in her world.
Soon, Azura digitized into the area and opened her eyes. "I'm in," she said. "You go through, and I'll be sure to access anything you need to get by."
"Thanks, Azura," Luz said before turning to Eda. "You ready?"
"You're gonna have to show me more of that before I send you off," Eda said, getting on her staff while handing King to Luz. "Don't get into too much trouble!" she called before flying off.
"Azura, try to see if you can find any digital layouts of this place," Luz said as she and King made their way to the closest tower leading to the top. "I don't want to get lost in my first time here."
"I'm on it, and keeping an eye out for anything I didn't pick up on before," Azura said, searching through the database. Her hat twirled to face the front and inserted itself into the stream. "Okay, I found it. Copying it now."
"Can your Navi destroy armies?" Azura heard King ask as she continued to get the layout of the Conformatorium. "She looks quite powerful."
"Well, if you count viruses as armies, she can wipe them out."
"You mean like sicknesses?" King asked as he climbed inside.
"You don't ever get virus attacks or bugs in any of your systems? Or anything that gets in the way of using crystal balls or other Tech?" Luz asked. She looked to the wall in front of her before jumping on top of a nearby crate. As soon as she catapulted off of it, she flipped off of the wall and twirled inside, striking a three-point landing as soon as she got in. "I'm still not sure how things work here."
"I'm sure we'll learn more when—" Azura started out before feeling something. Pausing her progress, she turned and aimed the MagiBuster out. "Someone there?" she asked, only for there to be no response.
"Azura?" Luz asked as Azura closed her eyes. A copy of her appeared and aimed her MagiBuster out while she continued the download. "What's going on?"
"It might just be my imagination, but I felt like I was being watched," Azura said. "I activated Double Witch just in case. If my clone gets hit, I'll feel it."
"Anyway, I'm sending you the layout," Azura went on as Luz saw the data sent to her. "I'll stay here just in case."
"Good work," Luz said before she went ahead with King. Upon catching up with him, she gasped at what was ahead of her. Numerous prison cells, each with different kinds of people of different races locked inside. "Now I really don't like this."
Luz and King continued to make their way through the cells before a woman in a purple dress and fangs noticed them.
"Hey, how'd you get out of your cell?" the woman asked.
Luz turned to face the woman. "I'm not a prisoner here." She clarified.
"Neither of us are," the woman said. "I'm Katya. We were all imprisoned here for stuff we just feel really passionate about. For me, it was writing FanFic stories about food. I like food, and I like love. Just let me do what I want."
"I know some people with similar interests like yours," Luz said. "What did everyone else do?"
"He eats his own eyeballs," Katya said, gesturing to a prisoner with multiple eyes, and as she said, he was eating some of them. "Tiny Nose there, she's big into conspiracy theories."
"The world is an illusion! We are play-things for a higher being!"
"Though I think there is some truth to what she says."
"Why would they lock you up for these things?" Luz asked. "Aren't there others who support what you do?"
"Not many openly express themselves like we do, or support us without the risk of getting caught," Katya explained before hearing something. "It's the warden, hide!"
Luz noticed and hid herself with King in an empty open cell. Bearing over everyone was a large man with a gas-mask that resembled a crow, and in a white suit. He looked to Tiny Nose and grabbed her.
"I heard you ranting, you runt!" Warden Wrath scowled before turning to everyone. "If you don't fit in, this is what awaits you!" he warned before taking Tiny Nose away.
Luz clenched her fist as she came out. She and King exchanged worried glances before turning to Katya.
"You should probably leave," Katya said. "Enjoy freedom for the rest of us."
"And leave knowing innocent people are not?" Luz asked, walking towards a lever. "He pulled this to open her cell," she said to herself before walking to it. "This was unacceptable back where I came from, and I won't accept it here!" she proclaimed before kicking the lever so hard that it went not only all the way up, but broke off and fell to the chasm below.
Katya looked on with wonder as the cells opened one by one. She looked to Luz and smiled. "Thank you. I'm in your debt if you ever need me." She vowed before going to help the other prisoners.
"Is it really like this back in your realm?" King asked Luz.
"There are humans who are good and bad, King," Luz said as she and King snuck past all of the escaping prisoners to the top level. "I don't ever want to see anyone get shoved around by the bad lot ever again."
Once the two reached the top, Eda approached them, where a contraband room was next to them as they stopped to meet midway.
"Wrath's busy, dealing with some puny prisoner." Eda whispered.
"They don't deserve to be here," Luz said. "They deserve to be themselves."
"I know, and I wish we could do more," Eda said. "But we can only look out for ourselves right now," she said before looking to see the door open. "Guess King couldn't wait."
"It's right here!" King exclaimed as he tried to reach several piles of contraband. However, a field revealed itself and zapped him, sending him back. "Stupid demon/witch system!"
"I guess this is where we come in," Luz said before turning to her PET. "Time to get back, Azura."
"On my way." Azura said before her clone disappeared. As soon as she did, she digitized out of the system.
"Azura, Logging Out."
However, before the data stream could close, the same dark energy from before stopped it, and started to begin a new search. Nine symbols started to appear, as well as information regarding the emperor himself and plans for the future.
"I shall rise… once more."
Luz walked towards the field and took a deep breath. Placing her PET out, she used it to pry open the field before making her way inside. Looking at all the piles, she walked in awe.
"Look at all of this," Luz said before coming across several disc items on the ground of one pile. "Custom Burn Discs? How'd you get here?" she asked before pocketing them away in her bag.
"Find it yet, Luz?" Eda called out.
"Almost," Luz called back before coming across something that looked like a crown. A chuckle escaped her mouth. "Wait, I saw that… from the arcade where Chisao had his birthday." She said before pulling out the crown. It was revealed to be made of paper, and had the words Burger Queen on it. Still chuckling, she walked back and handed the crown over.
"My crown!" King exclaimed happily. Immediately, he jumped over before taking the crown from Luz and placing it on his head. "Yes. Yes! I can feel my powers returning!" he said happily before seeing a bunny doll. "You, there. Nightmare critter. I shall call you Francois, and you shall be a minion in my army of darkness." He proclaimed, leaving Luz with Eda as the witch walked towards her.
"The crown doesn't do much for him, does it?" Luz asked.
"You're taking this better than I expected." Eda said.
"I know kids and what they're like with stuff like those," Luz explained. "But why not just tell me about that? I would've helped you find another way."
"Well, Luz, it's just been me and King, always looking out for each other," Eda explained. "None of us really fit in anywhere, so if the crown's important to him, it's important to me too. After all, us weirdoes have to stick together, right?"
Azura smiled back in the Cyberworld. "Yes, we do." She said as Luz simply blushed, finally knowing a real sympathetic side to the Owl Lady.
"Well, you helped us," Eda said. "Let's blow this joint before the warden finds us and loses his head." She quipped, unaware of the said figure lurking up behind her.
"Too late."
With a swift swing of his arm, now turned into a scythe, Warden Wrath cut off Eda's head, severing it from her body. It flew into Luz's hands, causing her to scream at the sight of the head now sticking its tongue out. But that was not what caused the loudest scream from her mouth that came next.
"Ow!" Eda yelled, apparently still alive. "Oh, I hate it when that happens."
With a loud scream, Luz scrambled back as Azura tried to hold herself together upon what she was seeing.
"Eda! Are you okay?" Luz asked, still not used to talking to a severed head.
"Yeah, this just happens when you get older." Eda sighed.
"I know from my classes that this is not the case." Luz argued.
"Who taught you that?" Eda asked.
"Finally, I have you… Eda the Owl Lady." Warden Wrath said, taking King's crown from him as he held his new playmate, François.
"Weh?" King went.
"My guards could never get you, but I knew if I took your pet's toy, you'd come running." Warden Wrath went on, crushing the crown.
"No, my power!" King yelled.
"What do you want?" Luz asked.
"Yeah. I've never broken any of your dumb laws! Not in front of you at least." Eda spat.
"That's the argument you want to go with?" Luz asked with an eyebrow raised as more guards entered the room, standing behind the warden.
"I want you…" Warden Wrath started out before the unexpected happened. He pulled out a bouquet of flowers and knelt down. "To go out with me."
"Huh?" Eda asked, confused.
"What?" Luz asked.
"Can I be the Wing-Navi?" Azura chimed in.
"Go, boss!" a guard cheered, as did several others.
Warden Wrath sent the guards a thumbs-up before turning back to resume his proposal. "You've always eluded me. You've always escaped capture. I find that… alluring."
"You've got a weird way of asking someone out, bruh." Luz commented.
"Stay out of this!" Warden Wrath snapped, smacking Luz into the air. However, before she could even fall, she took out her next device, the Battle Chip Gate.
"AreaSteal, Battle Chip In, Download!" Luz called out.
"What?" King asked as Warden Wrath was equally confused at what Luz said.
Soon, Luz and Eda both turned multicolored and disappeared. Reappearing on the ground, next to Eda's headless body, Luz tossed the head over before glaring at the warden.
"I think she speaks for herself when she eventually says… no." Luz quipped.
"Then you can join her in a cell for the rest of your life!" Warden Wrath snapped as the first two guards that entered approached, ready to detain her.
However, Eda sprang back up, her head reattached to her body, before King whacked the guards on the heads with her staff, then jumping up to do the same to Wrath as Luz ran at him.
"Nice one, your highness." Luz said.
"We'd better leave while there's enough confusion already." Eda said.
"I won't let you escape again!" Warden Wrath yelled, stretching his fists to punch the trio out the wall.
Luz, Eda and King all landed on the ground of the courtyard, each landing on their feet.
"I gave you my word," Eda said, handing Luz the portal key as Warden Wrath and the guards came down. "Luz, return to the Human Realm."
"But what about you?" Luz asked.
"If you think the warden's bad, you should've seen her last boyfriend!" King remarked.
"He's not my boyfriend!" Eda argued before turning to Luz. "Things are gonna get ugly, and I don't want you in any more trouble then I already got you in. It's for your own good." She said before she and King ran into the fight, just as Katya, Tiny Node and the multi-eyed prisoner were making their way past, just in time to see what was happening.
Luz watched as Eda and King ran at Warden Wrath, who attacked them with his bladed arms again. Looking to the portal key in her hand, she clenched it before reaching for her Synchro Chip.
"I can't leave them," Luz said as she took out her PET. "Azura, if there were any a time to try out our CrossFusion, this is it!"
"Whatever you need to help your new friends, I'm there." Azura said.
"Then let's go!" Luz exclaimed as she placed five Battle Chips in. "Here goes nothing. Synchro Chip in, Download!" she called out, slotting the Synchro Chip from her late father into the side of her Progress PET.
Soon, the process started to go through, with the data flowing on her screen. Grinning, she held out her device as a light shone.
"Begin CrossFusion Now!" Luz and Azura called out.
The light continued to spread as Luz spread her arms out, her PET reformatting itself for her.
"Weh?" King asked, seeing the light, causing him, Eda and even Warden Wrath and his guards to turn. Even Katya and the other prisoners looked on in awe.
"What's that?" Warden Wrath asked.
"Luz?" Eda asked.
Luz held out her right fist, letting Azura's armor manifest itself onto it as at the same time, her left arm started to gain her same gauntlets. Spreading them out, Azura's boots appeared over her legs, right as a purple over-shield appeared over her top chest. On her back, a set of two stars split in half appeared, acting as a pack for her, before she crossed her arms, allowing her Navi Crest to form and place itself on the center of her chest. As soon as it did, she spun around, her black bodysuit appearing beneath. She turned around and grinned, Azura's hat appearing over her head, followed by the sides of her helmet forming and placing a plate over her mouth. Holding out her right hand, the MagiBuster appeared, which she spun around before finishing her CrossFusion, staff held behind her, her left arm clenched in a fist facing up, and her left leg crossed behind her right.
"Did… did she do that when you met her?" King asked.
"No, she didn't," Eda said. "Dang, Kid. You're just full of surprises."
"We… we did it?" Luz asked, looking to herself. "Yeah… we did it!" she cheered. "Azura, we actually CrossFused!"
"Now remember why we did it." Azura reminded.
"You're right," Luz said before turning to Warden Wrath and the two guards. "Come and get yours, Wrath!"
"Not too bad of a trick, girl," Warden Wrath said as the two guards approached with their spears. "But fancy armor won't do much good against the Emperor's Coven."
"Bring it on." Luz challenged, readying her staff.
Both of the guards charged at Luz, but she was ready for them once they sent forth blasts.
"Guardian, Battle Chip In!" Luz called out.
As the Guardian Battle Chip showed across Luz's visor, it materialized in front of her. The blasts hit it, and its eyes lit up.
"Punisher!"
As soon as it announced the attack, lightning rained down on the guards, getting them to stumble back.
"MeteorKnuckle, Battle Chip In!" Luz called out, holding out her right hand. Once again, the MeteorKnuckle displayed itself across her visor before she flew forward, sending forth a strong fiery punch at Warden Wrath, knocking him backwards.
"Nice going, Luz," Eda said before seeing more guards starting to approach. "Not good!"
"I got this! MagiBuster!" Luz called out. Her right fist turned back to normal as she aimed her staff out. Blasts were sent out from it, all homing in on the attacking guards and knocking them out cold.
"I've had enough of this!" Warden Wrath called out, arming himself with his blades again. "You and me, girl! We end this!"
"Do not underestimate us, Wrath! We are the witches Azura and Luz, Warriors of Peace!" Luz announced as she and Azura's faces synchronized, determined looks appearing. "Program Advance!"
"StepSword!" Luz started, summoning a CyberSword on her staff before holding her left hand out. "HeroSword!" she announced, getting the HeroSword to appear over her left arm before holding both swords together. "StepCross, Battle Chips in!"
"EvilCut!"
All three Battle Chips synchronized with each other, and now, a golden sword blade formed over the MagiBuster.
Warden Wrath yelled as he charged at Luz, only for her to take a single step forward. Letting the effects of the Battle Chips take effect, she dashed at the warden, slashing him with all three Sword Battle Chips within seconds. Afterwards, she appeared right behind him, both with their weapons aimed, and now waiting for one or the other to fall.
In the end, Luz prevailed, as Warden Wrath collapsed to the ground. Smirking, she stood up and swung the EvilCut sword down, causing the former prisoners to cheer.
"As Lan Hikari and MegaMan say…" Azura started out as Luz turned around.
"You mess with the best, and you'll lose like the rest." Luz finished up.
Warden Wrath looked up weakly. "Luz… the human…" he sputtered before falling unconscious.
Eda and King turned back to Luz, who spread out her arms. Her armor soon materialized away, and her PET reappeared in front of her. She caught it and grinned before spinning it around. Catching her father's Synchro Chip in her right hand, she placed her PET back into her holster with the other.
"Quite the ride, huh?" Azura asked.
"Yeah, we did good for our first CrossFusion." Luz said.
"I have so many questions now." King said, stars in his eyes.
"Me too," Eda said. "But let's discuss this when no other demon wants to ask me out."
Luz nodded before Eda scooped her and King up onto her staff. The three took off, with Katya and the other waving.
"That was incredible!" Katya exclaimed. "I can't wait to tell Raine about this."
Back at the Owl House, Luz was looking through her PET.
"Wow, we've got a high Synchro Rating," Luz said. "I can't believe we didn't even test this out before coming here."
"There's a lot of good we can do here," Azura said. "Not saying to lie to Camila, or to disobey the request to take the time off, but with the right kind of balance and help, we can make a difference more than we did back home."
"I don't know exactly what it is you're talking about," Eda said. "But a deal is a deal. Even though I would like to learn more about what you've got there…"
"Eda, wait," Luz said. "Maybe there's something else we can do. I mean, I want to go back, maybe see what this camp is all about… but here? There's more I can do for others. Maybe make my mark for the Boiling Isles."
"Does that mean… you'll stay?" King asked hopefully.
"Well, that depends," Luz said, pulling out a plush doll of the actual Azura. Removing the crown, she handed it to him. "I know it's not the same… but a king shouldn't be without his crown."
King looked to the new crown, and seemed to smile, even if his skull did not show any expression. "It shall suffice." He said.
"Well, if you're gonna be here, what's your plan to make your mark?" Eda asked.
"There's a lot to learn, but with what I've brought with me, I think we can make things work," Luz said. "Maybe I can train under you too. As fun as it is to NetBattle, I was told to take a break from these kinds of things. Maybe… I could train to be a witch?"
Eda grinned. "Teaching the first human how to be a witch? How interesting," she said. "You got a deal, Luz. But on one condition."
"What is it?" Luz asked, an eyebrow raised.
"I get to learn everything about these net stuff you keep talking about," Eda said. "Things are fun here in the Demon Realm, but with what you've just shown me, I think we can both bring something else here that lets us both make our marks."
"I think it can work," Azura said as Luz took out her PET again. "You learn from the most powerful witch here, and she can learn from us, the best Navi and NetOp team there is. Second to Lan and MegaMan, of course."
Luz smiled and held out her hand. "It's a deal, Ms. Eda." She said.
"I look forward to seeing how this all goes." Eda said, taking Luz's hand to shake it.
"Yes, and more minions for my army!" King cheered, getting Luz, Azura and Eda to laugh.
"I can't wait for mine too!" Hooty chimed in.
Later that night, in an empty space of the Demon Cyberworld, data of nine symbols formed, with a tenth one imposing over them before erecting a castle with a purple hue to it. Out from it came a figure with vampire-like features, golden eyes, and a damaged Navi Crest that showed blood-red fangs over a purple background. The damaged, yet revived, image of ShadeMan stood, before looking around.
"All the power of this Demon Realm… all the raw power held by these witches and demons… it is mine," ShadeMan said. "Backing myself up before I could get Deleted was a risky move, but it leaves me open to starting anew… a new world to feast on for the new Darkloids under my name," he proclaimed before spreading his wings. "And I will use this realm to make a home for those loyal to my cause. It is time… for the culling of all humanity."
