Chapter 31: Telling Mrs. Grissom

When they arrived at Jo's and Josh's place, Sara parked in the driveway and they got out before walking on the stone style walkway, stopping at the front door and Sara knocking the moment she could.

A moment later the door opened, and Josh came into view, but wanting to surprise Jo, their greeting was done quietly, and they could hear Jo's voice as she asked. "Who is it?"

Soon after Sara came into Jo's view, Jo, who could really pop any minute now even though she has about 5 weeks left, gets off the couch quickly, or as quickly as she could in her condition, and exclaims with a happy look on her face. "Sara! What are you guys doing here? I mean I knew you would be in town, but I didn't expect..."

Grissom cuts her off with a smile while Sara greeted her best friend. "You really think we would come to LA and not visit you?"

"I just figured you would be too busy to come, not that I wouldn't have understood."

Sara shook her head with a smile. "Never will we be too busy to not visit one of my best friends."

Jo smiled. "That is very sweet of you." She then smirked as she slowly sat back down on the couch. "But if I know you two like I think I do, you (she pointed to Sara) wanted your husband to do whatever he wanted on his special day, and you (she then pointed to Grissom) wanted to make sure your wife was happy by coming over here to visit me."

They both chuckled before Sara replied while sitting down next her and placing her hand on top of hers. "Ok you got us, but we still wanted to visit you at some point while we are here."

Jo nodded with a smile. "I get it."

Josh then asked when there was a pause between the women. "Babe, do you need anything?"

Jo shook her head with a smile. "No, you can go watch your baseball game."

Sara then smirked. "And take Grissom with you."

Grissom asked his wife. "You sure?"

Sara turned her head to look at her husband. "I'm sure, let me have a little girl time, please?"

Not one to be told twice, Grissom looked at Josh, and the younger man nodded with a smile, patting him on the back. "Let's get out of here so our women can talk."

The women chuckled while Grissom nodded before he followed Josh towards the basement door and walked down to the room that he made into a mancave, and while those two didn't have much in common, their love of baseball (Josh roots for Boston Red Sox, and Grissom roots for the Chicago Cubs) actually gives them something to talk about when it was just them in a one-on-one conversation.

Once their men left the room, Sara asked Jo. "How are you feeling?"

Jo takes a breath while running her hand over her expanded stomach. "So ready to be done with this part. I mean I love being pregnant and I love my little girl like no other, but I want her out already."

Sara chuckled with a nod. "I know how you feel."

Jo smirked. "Oh, I know, because I was there for your last two weeks of your pregnancy with Belle."

Sara nodded with a loving smile. "I remember, and I don't know how you put up with me during that time."

Jo chuckled but spoke in a somewhat serious tone. "That's what best friends do." She then cleared her throat and continued, now in a full serious tone. "In fact, I was kind of hoping as my best friend I could ask you something."

Sara, feeling the sudden change in the room, spoke with worry. "Ok, this just feels like it took a serious turn. What's going on?"

Jo smiled as she placed her hand top of her friend's. "Just know that nothing is wrong, we just want to make sure we get everything in order before our daughter is born." Sara was waiting for Jo to continue, now with a worried look on her face. "Ok here it is, in the event that if something happens to me and Josh would you and Grissom be willing to take in our daughter?"

Sara was speechless at first then she cleared her throat before finally speaking. "Woah, I did not see this coming."

Jo smiled while squeezing her friend's hand. "I know, it's just now that we are having a child, we want to make sure she's taken care of if it comes to that." She then started to get teary eyed. "And I hope and pray that it never will, that we'll get to see her grow into this beautiful, amazing woman, but you and I and both know how fast life can change and we just want to be prepared for the unexpected, you understand right?"

Sara nodded while doing the hand squeezing this time. "Of course, and you know I'll have to talk to Grissom about this before I can tell you my definitive answer."

"I know."

"And while I appreciative that you picked us to watch over someone so precious, can I ask, what about your dad?"

Jo took a breath before replying. "He was close to being picked, I'll admit, but he understood why we ultimately choose you guys, and as much as I love my brother, I don't want to saddle him up with a child, he has his whole life ahead of him, and while I also love my sisters-in law, we kept going back to you two, we just couldn't imagine any one better to take care of someone we love more than anything."

Sara smiled with teary eyes. "Know that no matter what, she will be taken care of, you have my word."

Jo nodded, still teary eyed. "Thank you."

Sara nodded as they share a hug the best they could, then as they pulled back, they wiped their tears away and shook their heads before Jo clears her throat and spoke again. "Ok, let's change subjects."

Sara chuckled with a nod. "Yes, please."

"So, how are you feeling?"

Sara smiled as she placed her hand on her stomach. "Amazing, I still can't believe this is happening again."

"Yeah, but wait till you get back to this stage, your uncomfortable no matter how you sleep or sit, you're in pain a lot and you can't even see your feet."

Sara chuckled. "But's it's all worth it in the end, remember that."

Jo brights up as she ran her hand along her stomach. "Yes, it is. So, how is Grissom doing?"

"Chomping at the bit to tell people that he is going to be father again, he can't wait to tell his mom tonight."

Jo chuckled with a nod of understanding. "Yeah, Josh couldn't wait to tell his sisters either, of course after he got over the shock."

Josh and his two older sisters lost both of their parents when Josh was a Junior in College.

"Then I say we hit the jackpot when it comes to men who are actually excited about fatherhood."

"That is so true."

They smiled at one another, then they just started talking about other things, enjoying their time together.

Eventually they did leave Josh and Jo's place, made a quick stop before heading back to Betty's house, where they had a nice dinner and homemade apple pie, and while desert was coming to an end, Grissom looked at Sara with a hopeful expression, and Sara nodded with a loving smile, so Grissom gets that boyish look on his face as he stood up and walked to the end of the couch in the living room, grabbed a wrapped box from the bag that was sitting there and headed back to the dining room table and placed the present on the table in front of his mother.

His mother looks at the present with confusion before looking at her son and signing. 'Honey, this is your birthday not mine, you didn't need to get me anything.'

Grissom smiled. 'I wanted to, it's for a special reason. Please, open it.'

Mrs. Grissom's heart kind of leapt after her son signed 'special reason', hoping it was what she thought it would be about as she unwrapped the box, then opened the box, moved the tissue paper and immediately had tears in her eyes when she pulled out the t-shirt that read 'Now a grandmother to two'. She dropped it a second later with a gasp and looked up at her son, tears now going down her cheeks, and he wiped them away with a nod and smile before signing. 'Yes mom, you're going to be a grandma again.'

Betty stands up, cups her son's cheek with a bright, happy smile, then brings him in her arms.

After they pulled back, she finally signed. 'Congratulations, baby. I'm so happy for you.'

'Thank you, mom, and I'm happy for you as well, I know how long you've been wanting this to happen again.'

'It was all in good time, son.'

They share another hug before Betty turned her attention to her daughter-in law, and they smiled with tears in their eyes as the older woman signed to her. 'Congratulations, how are you feeling?'

Sara smiled. 'Amazing, I still can't believe this is happening again. And just so you know your son wanted to tell you the minute we found out, and I did want to too, but I...'

She trailed off and looked down, then Betty squeezed her hand to get her attention back to her before Betty signed again, still with a smile on her face. 'I get it, the first time was in a different circumstance, and this time around you could afford to wait to tell me. I don't blame you one bit for wanting to wait.' She then had a smirk like look on her face as she finished. 'I'm just glad you told me before the baby was born.'

They chuckled before another round of congratulations happened then not long after, they started to clean off the dining room table and placed the empty dishes in the kitchen before Betty shooed Sara and Grissom off so they could have their evening alone, so they said goodbye/goodnight to the girls before leaving and heading back to the beach house.

After arriving back at the house, which instead of heading right up to the bedroom, they took a little stroll along the shoreline, and while they were walking hand in hand, Sara shook her head with a smile. "You know, thinking about the shirt you got your mom, I don't think I ever seen her ware a t-shirt before."

Grissom thinks for a moment before he shook his head with a smile. "You know what, I don't think I have either. It's always been a button up blouse, even when she was out doing yardwork."

Sara chuckled. "Do you think we started her on a new trend?"

He smirked. "Maybe. She could be just so happy that she would want to show it off."

Sara chuckled again before sighing in content while looking out in the darken horizon. "She was definitely happy. I think happier this time around than when we told her the first time."

Grissom frowned a little as he stopped them, then spoke softly. "Hey honey, you know she was happy back then too, she loves Belle more than anything."

Sara looked at her husband with a short nod and a few tears in her eyes. "Yeah, I know she does, but you have to admit she was also scared about us at first, about me, about what I could do to you."

He smirked a little as he wrapped his arms around her waist. "Well dear, can you really blame her? I mean I did bring home a woman who was 21 and is 15 years younger than me, we didn't really know our full stories about one another yet and we tell her you are pregnant, I think she should get a little pass for how she felt at first."

"She does, and can I admit I was too, that while I believed in us from the beginning, and truly wanted us to work out. I can't lie and tell you that a small part of me was afraid too."

He slid his hand up to cup her cheek with a smile. "You can because I admit the same thing."

Now with a determination in her eyes, she placed her hand on top of his, she replied. "But now 9 years later we are stronger than ever, we are going to be parents again, and I don't know how this is humanly possible, but I love you more now than I did when we first met."

He smiled while running his thumb up and down her cheek. "Me too."

"So, no more doubts?"

He shook his head, then smirked a little. "Well, you know, I might need a little more reassurances during my birthdays."

She raised an eyebrow while wrapping both arms around his neck. "Really?" His eyes sparkled with a nod while she smiled as she ran her fingers through his hair.
"Starting with this one?"

"Preferably."

She smiled wider while bringing him closer. "Well, I'm definitely up to the challenge. Starting now?"

"In a few minutes, right now I just want this moment with you right here."

They kiss softly before they release one another but only until she turns around so her back was against his chest, then he placed one of his hands on her stomach and his other arm wrapped around her shoulders. She smiled as she placed her hand on top of his that was on her stomach, slipping her fingers through his while they just stood there listening to the ocean. This little moment wasn't nothing new between them, they like to do this when they were at home too, but it didn't matter how many times they do this, it never got old for them, because as much as they love their more intimate moments, these moments meant just as much to them, they just like being together in any setting.

When they made it back inside the house, she spoke softly. "I'll meet you upstairs."

Having a feeling on what she was going to do up there, he took her hand softly before she walked away and spoke softly. "Honey, you know you don't have to."

She smiled as she cupped his cheek. "I know, but I want to."

He nodded then they share a sweet kiss before she walks away from him to go upstairs to change while he locked up the house before he headed upstairs himself, where he stripped down to his boxers and sat up in bed, waiting on his wife.

A few minutes later the bathroom door opened, and Sara came out wearing a blue nightly, which when she saw the look he was giving her, she smiled as she walked towards him. "I think my husband loves the way I look."

"Very much so, and always."

Once she was close to the bed, she moves to sit on his lap facing him and cups his cheek with a smile. "Happy Birthday, babe."

He smiles as he leans forward and their lips meet in the middle for a kiss that turned passionate pretty quickly, and when they needed air, they pull back and placed their foreheads together before he moved his lips to her cheek then down to her neck while he slid his hand up her arm, placing his fingers on the spaghetti strap of her nighty, then his lips went down to her left shoulder and he started to kiss along it while sliding that side of the strap down her arm, he got it down about halfway before Sara finally whispered. "Griss."

He whispered against her skin. "Yes, dear."

She smiled at the endearment before bringing his face back up to her eyes so they could have eye contact before she spoke after clearing her throat from everything she was feeling in that moment. "Tonight is supposed to be about you."

He smiled as he slid his right hand to the other strap of her nighty and started lowering it as well. "And it still can be, but right now I want it to be about you, about me showing how appreciative I am of you."

Before she had time to respond, he moved them quickly so now she was below him, she then smiled while she lifted her body up so he could finish undressing her, and once the nighty was out of the way, he was looking at her with nothing but love and desire, sending her whole body in goosebumps, which the feeling only grew more intense when he moved his lips down to her three month pregnant stomach and kissed it a few times before slowly moving his lips up her body until their lips touched again, and once that happened, it was just them expressing their deep love/desire they had for one another.

Afterwards, while lying in each other's arms, he takes a breath before smirking. "Happy Birthday to me."

She chuckled at first, then exclaimed as she was moving from his arms. "Oh wait! That reminds me." He didn't say anything but was curious what she was doing when she got out of bed, wearing his shirt, and rushed out of the room.

A few moments later she was back in the room with the to-go box she had gotten from the restaurant that they went to earlier that day and two forks, she then handed him the box before she got back in bed and under the covers. "Happy Birthday, babe."

He turned his head to look at her and he asked. "I can now open the box?"

She nodded with a smile. "Yes." He turned his attention back to the box and opened it, seeing two slices of a creamy chocolate cake, and she explained. "I knew you were dying for your mother's homemade apple pie, but I wanted you to have a piece of cake as well, and this kind was strongly recommended by one of the waitresses."

"Aw, thanks honey."

"You're welcome."

He grabbed one of the forks from his wife while she continued with a chuckle. "I was also thinking about getting a candle or the number 4 and 5, but I resisted."

He chuckled. "Well, thank you for that, I don't need to be reminded how old I turn." He then said sweetly. "And I already have my wish. In fact, I've had my wish granted for the last 9 years."

She smiled shyly before they share a sweet kiss, then she replied with a smirk. "I think someone is trying to get lucky again."

He shook his head with a smile. "No dear, I'm just stating a very true fact."

A moment later they took their first bites of the cake, and it was probably the best chocolate cake they ever had.

"Oh my god this so good." Sara said after she swallowed.

"I think we just might have to come back here for the cake alone."

She chuckled. "I think we would make a few people upset if we did that and they found out we were here without seeing them."

"Well, it would be just the two of us and if neither one of us said anything, they wouldn't know."

"That is true, but what if there was a chance someone would recognizes you?"

"Then we'll be in trouble."

She chuckled with a nod. "Big trouble."

They smile at one another before finishing the delicious cake after a few more bites in silence, then he looks over at her and speaks softly. "Thank you." She turns her head to look at him and he continued. "And you know I'm saying thanks for more than the cake, right?"

She nodded with another smile. "I know."

He takes a breath and continues. "If someone would have told me in my late 20's, hell even a few years before we had met that I would have this life at 45, I don't think I would have ever believed them, I don't think this was ever part of my plan."

Sara smiled as she cupped his cheek. "Well babe, the best part of plans is that they can change, sometimes in ways you never could have imagined."

He smiled with that boyish look in his eyes. "And they definitely changed for the better, better than I could have ever imagined."

Sara took the now empty box out of his hand, along with the fork and placed everything on her nightstand then when she turned to him, she cupped his cheek again before he moved forward to press his lips to hers.

A few moments later she was laying down and he was following her so he would end up above her and they spent the rest of the night once again showing the other how much love they had for one another.
