"Okay, I'm going to ask you one more time." Mr. Small spoke quietly, struggling not to lose his temper. "What kind of power do you have over people? Why do they like you? Tell me!"
The human stared at him. "I-I don't know what you mean!" he stammered. "I don't know what's happening! Please let me go!" He wiggled in the chair, but his hands were tied behind his back and his feet were bound.
They had brought the human back to their house and now they were in the cartoons' basement. Mr. Small was getting very frustrated that he wouldn't answer his simple question: Why do people like you?
So I can get Elizabeth back! the small Mr. Man thought, imagining doing whatever this stupid Irish human does and she falls madly in love with him, begging him to move to his world, and she'll be devoted completely to him and him alone. A smile crossed his face as he went off in a daydream.
Someone clearing their throat startled him. He looked at Jack, who was eyeing him worriedly. "Can I please go home now? People will wonder where I've been, but I promise if you take me home, I won't mention you at all!" His eyes were wide and scared like a lost dog begging for food.
Maybe that trick would have worked on Elizabeth or another one of his minions, but Mr. Small felt no sympathy for him. "I'll let you go once you answer my question!" he hissed.
"I don't understand!" Jack yelled.
"Why does she like you?" the Mr. Man shouted. "What do you have that I don't?"
Jack paused, tilting his head to the side. "She? Someone you like?"
"Yes," he snapped, turning his back on the human and stomping toward the stairs. He heard Jack calling after him.
"Wait, don't leave me! Please let me go! Hey! Please!"
His cries were muffled as Mr. Small slammed the door shut behind him and entered the kitchen. He groaned loudly as he stormed toward the bedroom. But he stopped when he heard his best friend calling him from the telescope. Reluctantly he went over there.
"What happened?" Mr. Nosy asked.
"He's not talking," Mr. Small answered. "I need to talk to Elizabeth and see what she sees in him."
Mr. Nosy frowned. "So we didn't need to take him?" Suddenly fear flashed in his eyes. "Oh no, we're in trouble! What if one of the police that are looking for him can see us? We'd go to jail! Or worse, our friends will find out about everything. Our portal and all the stuff we've done." There was panic in his voice as he yelled," What are we going to do?"
As he freaked out, Mr. Small climbed onto the telescope and slapped him to shut up. "Stop panicking!" he shouted. He took a deep breath, calming himself as his friend rubbed his red cheek. "We don't know if the police are even searching for him."
"You heard that guy on the computer!" Mr. Nosy reminded him. "He said he was going to call the police! No doubt he's done that already! We're in trouble, Mr. Small."
His panicking was starting to infect Mr. Small but he forced himself to remain calm. "No, we're not. Nobody can track his disappearance to us. We just need to think what to do now." He started pacing on top of the telescope. "All I need to do is figure out what power he holds over people and use that on Elizabeth. Then we can return the human and nobody will know what we did. But with the power he showed me Elizabeth will throw herself at me."
Mr. Nosy was staring at him with an uncertain look. But he didn't say anything as Mr. Small hopped to the ground and made his way to the bedroom. "I'll be back," he called over his shoulder. "Keep an eye on the human and don't let him escape."
Being even more careful now because he was alone, the small Mr. Man walked down the street and stopped at the fence. He frowned up at the top of the wood beams, high above his head. He'll have to find another way in her yard. After searching for some time, he eventually found a hole in the fence behind some bushes. He squeezed through, for a terrifying moment thinking he was going to get stuck, but then he popped out on the other side and hurried to the camper.
He hopped up the steps and groaned as he stared up at the high doorknob. Why was he so small? He kicked the door in frustration, and a moment later jumped back when the door opened. Elizabeth widened her eyes in surprise when she saw him. Then she glanced around, looking confused.
"Where's Mr. Nosy?" she asked as her ex-boyfriend entered the camper. She closed the door behind them and turned as the small man jumped up where the computer was. Instead of answering her question, the cartoon turned to the computer, slightly surprised to see that she wasn't watching one of Jack's videos.
He didn't reply until he pulled up Youtube and searched the Irish Youtuber's account. Elizabeth walked over. "He missed his upload today," she said, frowning. "It's strange because he never misses." She shrugged. "He's probably busy."
For a moment guilt ran down Mr. Small's spine, but then he pushed it away and turned to the human. "Who's Mark? And Bob and Wade?"
"Mark? Bob? Wade?" She blinked in confusion. "Some of Jack's friends. He plays games with them sometimes."
He had to be careful with his next few questions. "Are Jack and Mark close?" he asked.
Amusement suddenly lit up her eyes. "A lot of people ship them together, but I think they're just really good friends, even though sometimes they seem too friendly."
"Do-Do you think Jack and Mark would be able to see us?" he asked cautiously.
She shrugged. "They're big kids, and what I'm gathering is that maybe people who truly never grow up can see you, like me and Roxanne. We both are like twelve or younger kids in a full grown body. So maybe they can?"
"What about Bob and Wade?" he asked. "Are they like big kids, too?"
Again, she shrugged. "I don't know much about them," she admitted. "I never watch their stuff, but the way they goof around with Jack and Mark I imagine they are kids at heart, too."
But for some reason they weren't able to hear me, but Mark did, and Jack can see us. Mr. Small's head was spinning. Who can and who can't see them made no sense to him. Was it just a select number of people who can see cartoons? Maybe no cartoon has found a portal and came to this world before us, and we were always careful just in case someone could see us, ever since Elizabeth's best friend saw us, so maybe it never mattered before. Maybe we got a little too careless, showing ourselves to people other than Elizabeth. Obviously none of her family can see us.
His train of thought was interrupted when Elizabeth slightly shook him. He turned to her and saw the worried look on her face. "Why are you asking me all this?" she asked.
He fidgeted for a moment before blurting out," We did something!"
She widened her eyes. "What did you do?" Suddenly she gasped and turned to the computer. "Did you have something to do with why Jack hasn't uploaded? Is he okay? What did you do to him?" She was panicking now, and Mr. Small's annoyance and anger spilled over. Why did she care so much for a guy she's never met before, when she didn't seem to care at all that he still loved her and just wanted her back?
"What is it that you like about him so much!" he shouted. "You've never even met him! He's nothing special! He's just some dumb guy!"
Elizabeth stared at him. "Where is he?" she asked quietly.
"In our basement!" he snapped. "I just wanted to know what kind of power he had over you! I want that power to– to…" His voice trailed off. His pride wouldn't admit that he kidnapped someone to get him to help him get her back.
She gasped. "What power? He doesn't have any power!"
Mr. Small sighed and shook his head, confused. "He has to, because why else would you like him so much?"
"Why I– Why I like him?" She blinked and then sat down on the bench, her back to him. "I don't understand. Why would you kidnap someone just because I like them?" Suddenly she stiffened and turned to him. "Mr. Small, are you jealous of Jack?"
He opened his mouth to object, but then he sighed and admitted," Yes. I couldn't understand why you like him so much? He's loud, annoying, and terrible at games. What–" He lowered his voice and murmured," What does he have that I don't?"
She frowned at him. "He never hurt me, and say if I did know him, he would never do what you did when I was just a kid. You've tortured me for years, without even being here. I don't know why you came back into my life, but I can't forget what you did to me. Ever."
Mr. Small sighed and turned away.
It was silent for several moments, before Elizabeth said," You have to let him go."
"Fine," he groaned. He climbed under the table and started making his way to the door. Then he paused and turned back. "Do you want to meet him?" he asked.
She stood up and hesitated. Then she slowly nodded. "I have some things to explain to him."
"Okay, let's go." He jumped up and grabbed the doorknob, thankful that the knob was closer to the floor on this side. Elizabeth followed him outside and down the street.
