It's a hot summer day. Michael and Kitt are at the beach near the estate. It's a rare day off with no assignments to worry about.
Michael decides to go for a short swim while Kitt takes the time to organize his data banks. His scanner is continuously running - a habit born out of necessity for his all-too-human partner. Kitt knows he doesn't need to be in surveillance mode during this time, but his programming dictates he should.
This day, Kitt learns how human-like he's become.
Michael has finished his swim and is walking back toward Kitt when he notices a commotion a short distance from the Trans AM. He wants to check things out.
A young woman is screaming, "Help! I can't find my son, please help!" Several onlookers were running around yelling, "Timmy."
Michael immediately runs over to the woman, "Is there anything I can do? I already see you have plenty of help trying to find Timmy."
"Yes, can you call my husband? I don't want to leave in case my son decides to return, and the nearest pay phone is over a mile from here." The woman is crying.
"Of course, hold on." Michael speaks discreetly with a voice almost like a whisper into his comlink, "Kitt, I need ya!"
Kitt responds immediately, "I'm on my way." His voice sounds tinny from the comlink. The AI noticed Michael's tone and responded in a whisper as well. Less than a minute later, he shows up with the windows darkened. He flashes his scanner at Michael and is ready for whatever Michael needs from him.
Michael gives Kitt a slight smile before turning his attention to the young mom, "I have a car phone. I can contact your husband using it."
The woman briefly looks at Kitt, "How did this car get here?" She doesn't wait for an answer and gives Michael a piece of paper with the number, "Here's his number, thank you very much. Oh, here's what my son looks like." She shows a photo of Timmy.
Michael immediately enters Kitt's cabin. "Here's the number, pal. See if you can contact the husband and scan the beach for any sign of Timmy. Did you copy the photo?"
"Right away, Michael. I have the photograph on my monitor." A few moments later, "I contacted the number, no answer. However, I detected a small boy matching the image on the photograph approximately nine hundred feet west of us. He appears to be unconscious by a patch of grass near a snack bar."
"Must be him, let's go!" Michael immediately starts the engine and drives slowly over to the spot described by the AI. The find the boy is exactly where Kitt described. "Scan his vitals, pal. How is he?"
The boy is stirring and starts to shake slightly. "MOMMY!" He cries out.
Kitt replies and keeps his voice low, "He appears to be injured slightly, Michael. There's a small contusion on his forehead near his right eye. I deduce he must have fallen and bumped his head. As you can see and hear, he's frightened."
Michael exits the car, kneels in front of Timmy and talks to the boy gently, "Hi, Timmy, my name is Michael, and this is my friend, Kitt," pointing out the car to the boy. "I just talked to your mommy. We'll take you to her." He briefly goes inside the cabin once again to grab his leather jacket. He wraps it around Timmy. "Can you walk?"
The boy nods yes and continues crying for his mom.
"Ok, we'll walk over to your mommy." Michael gently holds the boy's right hand. "Kitt, locate the mother, please."
"She's still in the same spot we originally saw her at, Michael." The AI replies a few moments later.
"Let's go." For most of the return trip to the mother, Michael carried Timmy and didn't mind since the boy was very light.
Kitt is following the two behind.
A few minutes later, the joyous mom spots the group, "TIMMY!" She's running toward the three, "You found him, thank you very much!"
Michael hands over Timmy to his mom - leather jacket and all. "My apologies, I couldn't contact your husband. There was no answer to my call, so I decided to look for Timmy instead."
"It's ok. My husband is here. Someone else must have contacted him. Thank you again very much ?" The mom is busily fussing over her son.
Michael smiles, "Just Michael." The mom kisses him on the cheek and goes on her way. The jacket is still around her son.
"My jacket... " Michael starts to call out to the mother but gives up after a moment. "That's my favorite jacket, oh well," he comments before re-entering Kitt's cabin. He starts the engine and sighs, "Let's go home, buddy."
"Michael, that jacket of yours was old and almost falling apart - why do you like it so much?" Kitt is puzzled. "We did a real good thing today, and all you think about is the jacket." He scolds his best friend.
With a sad smile, Michael replies, "It was a gift from someone - I once loved." He doesn't speak another word.
Kitt is silent and feels angry at himself for scolding Michael. The next day, the AI calls him on the comlink, "Michael, would you come to the garage please."
A moment later, "What's up, pal, anything wrong?"
Kitt answers with a gentle voice, "No, I want to show you something."
A sigh, "Alright, be there in a few."
Five minutes later, Michael shows up and asks, somewhat annoyed, "What's so important, Kitt?" He's still not in the best of moods.
"Michael, I have a surprise for you." Kitt automatically opens the driver's door. "It's not the same jacket as before, but I hope you like it." Draped over the driver's seat is a brand-new leather jacket similar to the old one. Kitt is hopeful that is acceptable.
Michael looks at the jacket and puts it on. It's a perfect fit. He smiles, "Thanks, pal. I love it." He pats Kitt on the roof and adds, "Love you too."
"I love you as well, Michael." The AI responds with affection.
The jacket has become Michael's new favorite.
