Ace walked into Classroom 1-B, his eyes scanning the room and the various students. This environment was entirely new to him, a stark contrast to the life he vaguely remembered growing up away from formal education.
Looking around the room for a moment he looked for an open seat. He wasn't the first one there and he had to find a good set so he could pay attention to lessons. He found it after a moment and moved quickly sitting down next to an orange haired girl.
Ace gave her a smile and a wave as he took his seat, before his attention moved towards the front of the class as the door opened again and the teacher walked in. As he looked at the white haired man. He thought of the words toughness and strength. He was built like a tank, and his fangs stood out too. He was curious about him as he had such a strong aura about him. He looked like a real warrior.
"Now, Good morning, class, I hope you are ready for your first year at UA Academy," the teacher declared, his deep voice resonating through the room. "I'm Vlad King, and I'll be your homeroom teacher for the year. Let's get started with introductions and then we'll move on to some ground rules."
Ace listened as his classmates introduced themselves, taking mental notes of their names and quirks. When it was his turn, he stood up confidently. "I'm Portgas D. Ace," he said, his tone casual yet confident. "I can turn into fire and control it. Looking forward to working with all of you."
As he sat back down, the orange-haired girl next to him introduced herself. "I'm Itsuka Kendo," she said with a friendly smile. "My quirk is Big Fist. Nice to meet you all!"
Vlad King nodded approvingly. "Good, that should be a good enough introduction so that you have some idea of who your classmates are in here.."
"Okay, we are going to do a test like Class 1-A, but I want to do it differently," Vlad King, continued his tone firm. "I want you all to pair up and we are going to do a challenge—a simple obstacle course that will test your ability to work with others and use your quirks. So go ahead, find someone to work with, and we will meet down at the training grounds in ten minutes. This is not optional; everyone must find a partner."
Ace glanced around, looking for someone to team up with. He noticed Itsuka Kendo nearby and decided to approach her.
"So, want to work with me? I know I might not look it, but I am pretty tough," Ace said, flexing and smiling. "I'm sure we can figure out this test together without any problems at all."
"Um, sure, Ace," Itsuka said, remembering his name and hearing about his power. "I'm sure we can figure this out. Let's get down there so we don't end up with a bad placement."
"Yeah, lead the way. I don't remember where this place is on the campus," Ace admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. He walked down with her, feeling a mix of excitement and curiosity about the challenge ahead and about working with someone else.
As they arrived at the training grounds, Ace saw the obstacle course. It wasn't overly complicated but definitely challenging. There were large fans blowing across a turbulent water area. The goal was to get across, gather an item from the other side, and return within a certain time limit. Ace immediately knew he couldn't swim, so he had to think creatively.
He observed other pairs attempting the course, each using different strategies. When it was their turn, Ace turned to Itsuka. "I think I have an idea. I need you to block one of the fans, then I'll use my flames to break off a piece of a fan. You grab it, and I'll attach it to one of those boards to create a sort of jet ski. When we get to the other side, you reach over with your big hand and grab the target. We don't stop, just keep moving. Sounds good?"
Itsuka nodded, understanding the plan. "Got it, but you can't swim?"
"Yeah, I can't swim, so this is our best option," Ace admitted.
"Okay, that is an odd one, but I guess that is your weakness, water?" she asked, confirming the fact with him. Ace nodded as he heard her.
"Okay, let's get this done like you said when we have our go," Itsuka declared as she and he walked up to the starting line.
Itsuka quickly blocked the fan from blowing them as Ace used his flame like a torch cutting through the base of the fan, separating it from the wall. As it fell, Itsuka quickly grabbed it, getting a bit singed from the heat of the metal. Ace took the fan and the board, using his fire a second time as a way to weld it to the metal. He set it up as he wanted and worked on it quickly.
Ace looked at it, making sure it was on well. He put it on the edge of the water. "Okay, get on," he called over to her as he stood on the back of it. "This will be challenging, but this part is going to be all about the timing. You have to move your large hand fast enough to grab the target as we are moving quickly."
Ace waited as she got on the large jet ski board ahead of him. He used his own flames to drive the fan, the pressure of his flames driving the fan but also quickly melting it. He realized he might have put more thought into his plan as his flame slowly messed with the fan blades. As they flew across the water, he urged, "Now grab it, you have to have it, Itsuka."
Itsuka, with her enlarged hand, reached out and snatched the target just as the fan started to give out. They barely made it back to the starting point before the makeshift jet ski fell apart. They both jumped off, panting slightly from the adrenaline.
Vlad King watched them, a stern look on his face. "Creative solution, you two. It wasn't perfect, but you adapted and used your quirks effectively. Good job."
Ace grinned, feeling a sense of accomplishment. "Thanks, Itsuka. We did it."
"Yeah, we did," Itsuka replied, smiling back. "Nice teamwork, Ace."
As Ace and Itsuka rejoined the group, two students who had already completed the course looked at them with curious expressions. Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu and Neito Monoma were particularly intrigued by the display of Ace's unique power and his unorthodox approach to the challenge.
"Hey, that was some wild stuff you pulled off there!" Tetsutetsu called out, his metal skin reflecting the sunlight. "I've never seen anyone use fire like that. What's your quirk called?"
Ace grinned, scratching the back of his head. "It's called the Flame-Flame power I think. I can turn my body into fire and control flames. Pretty handy for situations like this, I guess."
Neito Monoma stepped closer, his eyes gleaming with interest. "Flame-Flame Quark? Sounds like something from a comic book. So, you can turn into fire completely? That's quite the power. Mind if I ask how it works?"
Ace shrugged. "Honestly, I'm not entirely sure myself. I just know I can control it and use it in different ways. It's been useful so far."
Neito nodded thoughtfully. "Interesting. I'm Neito Monoma, by the way. I can copy other people's quirks. So, if I touched you, I could use your flame powers for a bit."
"Neat," Ace said, genuinely impressed. "So you get to try out all sorts of quirks. That must be pretty cool."
"It has its perks," Neito admitted, smirking. "But it can be tricky, too. You never know what you're going to get until you try it."
Tetsutetsu chimed in, "I'm Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu. My quirk lets me turn my body into steel. Makes me pretty tough in a fight. We should spar sometime. I want to see how my steel holds up against your flames."
Ace laughed. "Sounds like fun. I'm always up for a challenge."
Itsuka, standing beside Ace, added, "Well, looks like you're fitting in just fine, Ace. These guys are some of the best in our class. We're lucky to have you."
"Thanks it is nice to feel like I belong, and I really do around you guys," Ace said with a friendly smile, "Working with you on the obstacle course was a lot of fun Itsuka," he added with a grin on his lips.
Itsuka looked at the dark haired boy and blushed for a moment. The freckled classmates of hers was nice on the eyes, kind, and so talented, Ace had caught her eyes completely as she looked away composing herself after a moment.
Ace watched the last few groups go and was impressed everyone had such odd and different powers. They were all unique and very original. He stood keeping a track of the timeline, his and Itsuka's wasn't the best but it wasn't the worst either. "So, after this we get to have lunch right, sensei?" Ace asked, looking over at Vlad King.
Vlad King looked over at Ace and gave a nod, his stern expression softening slightly. "Yes, Ace, once everyone has completed the obstacle course, you'll all have time for lunch we are going to focus on getting you all used to normal class work here, so you can see both sides."
Ace nodded as he watched the last group finish, and then soon was at the cafeteria with his new friends, he had a lot of food in front of him as normal, spicy food which was his normal.
"So, Ace," Neito began, "how are you finding U.A. so far? Must be quite a change from wherever you were before."
"It's been great," Ace replied honestly. "Everyone has been really nice to me, and welcoming. They have put up with my personal quirks and even have helped me out finding my way and just being kind to me. It is really lovely and I am rather happy to be here. I think I have made a bit of an impression on others too."
"Well, you definitely made an impression with that fiery jet ski move," Tetsutetsu said with a laugh. "Can't wait to see what else you can do."
"Same goes for you guys," Ace said, smiling. "This is just the beginning. We're all going to push each other to get stronger."
As they settled into their meal, Neito added with a competitive glint in his eye, "We are going to show those punks in Class 1-A that we are just as good as them."
Itsuka shot him a disapproving look. "Neito, come on. We're all here to be heroes, not compete against each other."
Neito shrugged, not entirely convinced but dropping the subject for now. Ace, meanwhile, nodded in agreement with Itsuka, appreciating her more collaborative approach.
As they ate, Ace felt the familiar weight of drowsiness creeping in. He tried to fight it off, determined to stay awake and get to know his new classmates better. But despite his best efforts, the combination of a full stomach and his peculiar sleeping habit took over. His head slowly drooped, and before he knew it, he was out cold, face-planting right into his pile of rice.
Tetsutetsu, Neito, and Itsuka stared in disbelief as Ace began to snore softly, a fork still in his mouth.
"What the…?" Tetsutetsu murmured, poking Ace lightly. "Is he... asleep?"
Itsuka sighed, shaking her head with a small smile. "Looks like it. I guess he must be really tired."
Neito raised an eyebrow. "I've never seen someone just fall asleep like that. And in their food, no less."
Neito, unable to resist, pulled out his phone and took a quick picture of Ace's rice-covered face. "This is definitely going in the class chat."
Itsuka rolled her eyes but couldn't help but laugh. "Alright, let's not make fun of him too much. He did a great job in the obstacle course."
As they watched Ace snore away, the Big Three—Nejire, Tamaki, and Mirio—entered the cafeteria and spotted the scene. Nejire giggled, recognizing the familiar sight. "Oh, looks like Ace fell asleep again. He does that a lot."
Tamaki nodded, looking somewhat relieved that the new students were seeing Ace's quirk in action. "Yeah, it's just something he does. I think it's a part of his powers or something."
Mirio grinned widely, giving a thumbs up. "Don't worry, he'll wake up soon enough. Just let him nap for a bit."
"Well keep an eye on him, he is very unique, but I think he is a prett neat guy from what I have figured out so far," Nejire commented before finding her own place to sit with Mirio, and Tamaki a bit away.
As the lunch hour wound down, Ace eventually stirred, lifting his head groggily and blinking rice out of his eyes. "Sorry about that," he mumbled, embarrassed but still smiling. "Guess I needed a nap."
Itsuka laughed softly. "It's okay, Ace. We'll just have to get used to it."
Neito smirked. "You sure know how to make an impression, man."
Ace chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah, I guess I do. Ready for the next part of the day?"
"Yeah, we have notes to do, and honestly you didn't look like you were that good at taking them," Itsuka said, having noticed his lack of taking notes before. "Tell you what, give it a try and at the end of class I will see about giving you my notes to use if yours are as bad as I think they will be."
Ace grinned sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. "Yeah, I guess I'm not the best at taking notes. Thanks, Itsuka. I'll try my best, though."
As they headed back to the classroom, Ace found a seat next to Itsuka, determined to give note-taking his best shot. When Vlad King began his lecture, Ace focused intently, jotting down what he could. It quickly became clear that his notes were a disorganized jumble of words and sketches.
Itsuka noticed the notes that Ace was trying to take about half way though the lesson. She noticed just how bad they were. She didn't say anything, but she knew that he was going to need her help. She shook her head as she started to write doubles of her notes as she figured that they were classmates and should help each other out, plus she was pretty taken by the strong charismatic strange boy.
After the class ended, Itsuka held true to her promise. She handed Ace her meticulously organized notes, neatly written and easy to follow. "Here you go. Just make sure you actually study them, okay?"
Ace took the notes gratefully. "Thanks, Itsuka. I owe you one."
"Well we are classmates, and I am sure that you will pay me back somehow," Itsuka said as she smiled, "Plus friends help each other out right?"
Neito, who had been watching the exchange, smirked. "You better not make a habit of this, Ace. We're future heroes, not future freeloaders. Plus somehow I don't think Itsuka will let you off without at least taking her to dinner once."
Itsuka gave Neito a glare, but he ignored her at that moment.
Ace laughed, pocketing the notes. "Got it. I'll work on my note-taking skills. Maybe I can show you a thing or two about improvising plans in return. Plus, if you want to go out sometimes I would love to Itsuka."
Tetsutetsu clapped Ace on the back. "Sounds like a deal. Let's get through this together."
Itsuka was at a loss for words for a moment, "Sure, I could show you a few good places not too far from here, that I was told about."
"Great, I look forward to it Itsuka," Ace said as he grabbed his bag, "I live on campus so I have to get these notes back and start to read over them, can't waste your help after all."
As he headed home, he headed back to his dorm. Ace walked with an extra bounce in his step, he had made a number of friends at the school, and he really felt like he belonged there. It had been a really good day.
