Chapter Twenty-Six
A Great Place to Work
A/N – Many of you have come to catch my little hints and as you saw, Jack has fallen ill. The results of a stroke are never truly known until the patient starts their recovery. With his age they will be challenging and to be honest I am still on the bubble about how the story line turns out. So together we will see, but be assured, the support will be there for him throughout. I plan to cover a few things in the next chapters. First off the Rodeo, beginning of school for the Borden kids, a few birthdays, some creative and innovative ideas for the company and of course Jack's recovery. I will apologize ahead of time but there will be a short piece convincing a Board Meeting as I just mentioned, the business is in need of some new approaches to things and to be honest decisions to be made. I expect that I may even focus on the newest DVM and the wedding prep. Look for some surprises and fun for sure. I have a number of interesting storylines in the queue and will begin setting them up, which is pretty exciting. Many of the ideas have come from you the readers so keep them coming, I love it. I am still looking at the long term reach of this story while I continue to consideration of a third and final story in what I guess would be a trilogy. I also have some other smaller stories in mind that I have been thinking about. Either way never stop letting me know how I am doing. You can't understand what your feedback means to me. As a shocked Shawna and JT left the hardest thing was that GG wanted them to only tell his mom and dad. Lisa already knew and had told Lou, Scott and Max. He laughed mumbling, "She is not really happy about" it. He still seemed confused and his speech and mobility were limited but the both saw him inside all of that. When Amy showed up to get them she smiled as she had already heard. JT jumped into her arms for a big hug, "Mommy, GG is coming tomorrow." She smiled and pulled them both in, "Shhh, I know but we have to keep it a secret so tomorrow will be a big surprise." It was going to be hard, but JT realized he needed to be quiet about and dinner would be his first challenge. When they pulled up to the house the kids were all looking for them and met them on the porch. Maddie asked, "So how was your visit JT and Shawna. As Shawna grabbed his arm for support, he talked softly, "Well he is good but it is hard seeing him so confused and having trouble speaking. I guess I'll just have to get used to it and just make sure I am there for him." Lyndy smiled, "JT you are always there for him and GG knows that. You are always there for everybody and really not too bad for being a boy." Wyatt poked her and she smiled hugging him, "Oh Wyatt, you aren't too bad either." They all laughed and headed inside seeing that their dad was working hard on dinner. He scoffed and blurted out, "Are you all done with the social hour, I could use some help here." They all giggled and Lyndy smiled stepping over to him, "Dad, you aren't too bad too." Everyone laughed except Ty who was confused. Amy came over to comfort him and start helping along with Annie and Addie. The rest of the kids set up the table and Amy noticed that Shawna was sticking close to JT so she spoke up, "Shawna, will you join us for dinner, I can text your mom." She smiled shaking her head, yes. Dinner was lively as ever with a little talk about Jack but more about their days. The girls were excited about school and their upcoming birthdays. Shawna was also excited but JT remained pretty quiet. Ty noticed it and was about to say something when Amy put her finger to her lip discreetly. He got the hint and figured he would ask her later. They all decided to turn in early as tomorrow would be a busy day with the Company Rodeo. Ty was sitting looking over some upcoming surgery files as he glanced over to Amy as she got ready for bed. It was almost 25 years of marriage to the woman of his dreams and it still turned him on as she put on her lotion and combed out her hair. She noticed and smiled coyly speaking up, "Why Dr. Borden are you staring at me?" He smiled and walked over to her to kiss her neck, gently picked her up and carried her to their bed. She buried her head in his neck and began to nibble on his ear and cheek. He climbed in next to her and never spoke a word. Their hands worked their pajamas off and they increased the heat of a passionate kiss. Ty continued his aggressiveness realizing that she had really turned him on. His hands moved up and down her body and his lips followed. He latched on to her breast and moved up and down her still amazing body. Amy was over whelmed with his advances and moaned arching her back and throwing her head back. She struggled to control herself and shuttered in her first orgasm as his fingers found that perfect spot. Ty simply whispered, "Amy." She reached down to feel his hardness and marveled at how amazing he felt. Every time they made love they both felt the need to pleasure each other so she began moving her hand up and down. Now it was time for Ty to moan and arch his back. She continued for a while and decided she needed him inside of her. She rolled him on his back and straddled him lowering herself down. She held her breath as he entered her until she heard a whisper from Ty, "Breathe Amy." She moved up and down smoothly as Ty matched her in perfect sync. Their speed increased and Ty looked into her eyes as she orgasmed again. He marveled as her body continued to bounce up and down, which was a site he never got tired of. He loved Amy Borden and every day he made sure she knew it. Amy was in a level of ecstasy that was one she never took for granted. She loved Ty Borden completely and always wanted to make sure he knew that. Their lovemaking was not ordinary and each time they each felt as though it was the first. It was something they would take with them forever. They continued on increasing the passion and slowing down occasionally having a passionate kiss never losing their connection. Their moans and whispers continued until they both realized that they were ready to consummate their lovemaking session. She felt him pulse inside her and as she climaxed a third time, he exploded inside her. She shook and put her hand over her mouth as she wanted to yell out, "I love Ty Borden." Instead she collapsed onto him as he continued on far a few minutes. Once he stopped they were breathing heavily and coated in a light sheen of their love. She gathered herself and giggled nestling into his neck and whispered, "Well that was kind of amazing." He pulled her up to kiss her deeply and laughed breathlessly, Yea, that was nice." Her head shot up and she attacked his sides, "Just nice, well we will have to do something about that." She regained her control and moved down his body. Their night was not over.
The morning came too soon for everyone, especially for Ty and Amy whose love went on into the early morning. It was an early morning and the kids had breakfast ready when Amy and Ty groggily came down. Addie laughed, Wow, good afternoon, Mallory already dropped off clothes for Shawna and is getting everything ready. Wyatt and Lyndy have also left and we have to go. So your breakfast is ready." Amy shot her a look and smiled, "Well your dad and I thought we could sleep in a little." The three girls giggled, "So that is your story." Amy blushed a little as the girls felt all warm inside understanding that their parents were still deeply in love. After hugs they all headed out to help with setup and get ready for the onslaught of staff and their families. The grounds were set up with both larger tents with plenty of seating for families to take a break and enjoy the food that would be set up almost all day. Later one tent will be turned around for the late stayers to dance and party. They also rented additional bleacher seating for the outside pan which would being used in addition to the indoor arena. They had more contestants than ever were expecting over 300 people. Amy and Ty shared a quiet breakfast. They were excited about the day, especially the surprise coming in an ambulance from the hospital. Lisa, Max and Casey were going to come with him, so Lou, Scott, Amy and Ty could be on site and not raise any suspicions. The plan was ready as they always had an ambulance on site in case anyone got hurt, but what people didn't know was that Jack would be in it. Lisa texted Lou and Amy and said Jack was in good spirits and the lead nurse from the medical team would be accompanying him. She also mentioned that they had no idea if he would be able to speak but wanted to be there. Amy and Ty got ready and headed out arm in arm and were immediately accosted by Mallory and Caleb. The kissed quickly and headed in different direction to see what was up. Mallory, Soraya and their husbands were swarming around the ranch making sure everything was on time and looking good. Trent was taking care of Lexi which put his mom at ease. He actually had a host of kids he was looking over as well, which several of the parents were appreciative of. There was a lot of chatter about Jack and the family answered all of the questions telling everyone he was slowly improving. Amy and Lou were overwhelmed at the love and respect everyone had for their grandfather. Lou ran into Mallory to speak about the ambulance that was going to be on site, "Hey Mallory, since we have such a large number of competitors, the hospital offered another ambulance so there will be two of them. Let's park them out of the way behind just outside of the arena like last year." Mallory, unknowingly understood, "Ok, Lou, we really need two?" Lou laughed, "Well they offered so we said yes. Since they are one of the sponsors I figure why not." Preparation continued as staff and families started to show up. They had converted several of the outside pens to hold the horses coming and many already had their horse there. The broncs were coming soon and had a separate pen for them. Since parking would be an issue, several folks were asked to park at Heartland and would be shuttled over by a company that offered two small buses. The catering was from Maggie's and Ellory volunteered to oversee it. There would be food set out all day, starting with a continental breakfast and a cowboy lunch. The night meal would be a little more expansive as they expected the party to go on for a while. The Day Care would be open the entire time so some of the younger parents could hang out at the party later. Many of the staff volunteered along with a lot of the family kids who were doing shifts. Jenn had set up rooms for some of the staff's families and a couple of clients already there were invited to attend as well. Mallory also made sure they were ready for any media showing up as several of the local and regional newspapers were sending reporters to do onsite interviews. Amy was surprised when she saw Sam and Alex show up with a cameraman. She smiled and went to hug them, "What are you two doing here?" Alex smiled, "Surprise, we couldn't miss out on the famous Heartland Equestrian Expereince Company Rodeo and our producer thought it would be nice to get some film and interviews for next week." Sam added, "And we were hoping you and Ty could come in for an interview, we haven't talked in a while." Amy looked around, "Where are you better halves?" They laughed as Sam answered, "Well Alex's wife is helping with the catering group and my silly husband is playing ranch hand helping with the broncs. Seems Mallory's stretch for help goes far." Ty walked over and hugged them and kissed his wife, "Hey honey, it's time to see Addie." Alex and Sam ribbed them and called them the cutest couple in the world. They caught up with Addie and Desi who were looking over the tent set up and took them over to the front porch for privacy. Amy smiled and spoke quietly, "Adds, we have a favor to ask. Is GG's special scooter ready?" Desi laughed, "It is and it is awesome." Addie smacked him, "Hey they asked me and yes it is ready. I even had Heartland's logo all over it. I have to admit it is pretty cool." Ty hesitated, "Good, now we are going to tell you something and you have to be quiet about it and we need you to discreetly get take the scooter somewhere. GG will be here in one of the ambulances. He got permission to come to the event and we plan to surprise everyone. Very few people know about it so you have to keep quiet. So when you take it there we need you to also help him navigate out to the podium area. The head nurse will be here as well so she will be close." Addie was in tears and hugged her parents tightly, "I can't believe it." She was unable to speak as Ty looked at Desi, "You need to keep her focused and please no one can know." Desi gave a thumbs up and Addie couldn't stop hugging her mom. The went their separate ways as the start of the event was close. It was going to be a great day.
The ranch was abuzz with activity as people arrived and began to get ready for the event. There was a lot excitement and laughter as families and staff greeted each other. Although there was a lot of staff interaction at work, having their families there was a lot of fun. The parents enjoyed having the play area available for the little ones at the Day Care but overall Lou and Amy were always overwhelmed with how well everyone got along. Their goal was to create a great work environment and by what they saw they had succeeded. But they really got excited when they saw the two ambulances coming down the drive, followed by Lisa's SUV. They discreetly headed over intercepting Mallory. Lou spoke up, "We got this Mallory, we will tell them where to go." She smiled without a response and headed over to the tent area on a mission. Max parked the SUV by the house and along with Casey headed their way. Lou had them park in the back so the ambulances were hidden. Amy was the first to get to the ambulance with Jack in it and a smiling Lisa opened the door. Lou and Amy quickly jumped in and noticed they had even covered the windows. Their hearts exploded when they saw Jack ibn the wheelchair smiling. He looked at them and mumbled, "Hey there." Their tears began to flow as they saw him sitting there. He was supported on the left side by a pillow and a support belt was discreetly hidden around his chest. He was dressed in his jeans, flannel shirt, boots and cowboy hat. He chuckled, "Now you two need to stop the crying." They settled and just took the time to be with him and tell him how awesome this was going to be. He frowned and spoke softly and slowly, "Yea but look at me." Lou immediately spoke up, "Grandpa stop, no matter what everyone here loves and respects you so cowboy up." They all had a laugh including the nurse. She smiled, "So can I see this scooter thing you have and we need to get ready for the grand entrance." Just as she spoke there was a knock on the door. Amy opened it and saw Addie, Desi and Ty standing next to the customized scooter. Ty smiled, Hey Jack, we have a surprise for you." The nurse smiled and approved his new ride. Amy, Lou and Lisa headed out to make sure they were seen while Addie gave instructions on how to use the scooter. When the time came, Ty and Desi would help him into it and Addie would help drive it sitting on his lap if needed as the nurse would be close behind. As the others were engaged in getting ready, Lyndy had a feeling something was up. She leaned into Wyatt, "My mom and dad are acting kind of weird, I wonder what they got going on. And why was Max driving Lisa' SUV following the ambulance. I didn't see Lisa, was she with him?" Lisa heard the conversation and snuck up behind them, "So how are things going. I heard you chatting and actually I was in the back on the phone talking to the hospital checking up on your GG. And by the way he is fine. Oh, I better go check up on Mallory, bye." Wyatt poked up his fiancé, "Ha busted, you see everything is good." She blushed and buried her head into his chest. For the 10th time, Annie asked Jeremy if he had seen her twin sister and this time Maddie joined her. "Jer, have you seen our sister and her boyfriend. I haven't seen them for an hour." He looked around, "No I haven't, maybe they are making out somewhere?" Annie slapped his side and they all laughed. JT and Shawna were really busy helping check over the big tent for Mallory. Shawna noticed that JT was quiet and avoiding people and whispered, "JT it's Ok he will be here soon and I know it is hard but we need to stay focused on the secret. Not talking to people just makes them think something is up." He smiled, leaned over and kissed her cheek. He whispers as she blushes, "Thanks, you always say the right things." As they finished, the loudspeaker let everyone know to begin gathering in the arena for the opening of the Rodeo. Outside of a selected few everyone headed in unaware of what was about to happen. The arena was full of happiness and laughter. Everyone was excited and were really enjoying being together. It wasn't just about the Rodeo, it was more than that. It was about an organization that cared for every one of them, no matter what they did. Several people approached the podium and everyone hushed to listen to the leader of the organization. Lou, as Chairman of the Board approached the microphone, flanked by her husband, Amy, Ty, Lisa and other members of the Board. Mallory was close and making sure everything was going as planned. Lou was doing everything she could to control her emotions so in her usual professional tone as she began speaking to the group.
At the ambulance, Ty and Desi had successfully transferred Jack to the scooter and secured him. The seat was more than big enough and leaned back a little to give him more stability. He sat proudly as Addie was quietly showing him how it worked. He didn't respond but smiled as she took her time going over the throttle, that was on the right arm, and how it controlled 360 degrees of movement. She also showed him the brake pedal on the right side as well that he should only use in an emergency. He began practicing around the ambulances and Ty laughed, "Well Jack, it's not a bronc but seems to be a good ride." Again he just smiled and pulled up to Addie. He held his right arm out and gave her a true cowboy hug whispering softly in her ear, "Thank you sweetie." The three onlookers did everything they could to hold back the tears. After the nurse checked him over they waited as they heard Lou begin to speak. Desi laughed, "Almost game time Jack." Lou excitedly began to speak, "Welcome everyone to the annual Company Rodeo and Family Party. Although we will be having a friendly competition, for all of my family, this is more about getting together with staff and their families and celebrating another great year and this amazing place we all work at. Although I must admit, most days I think a lot of us don't think of it as work." Everyone applauded loudly in appreciation of her words. She continued thanking all of the volunteers and staff who helped make this even possible. She specifically recognized Mallory and her trusted assistant Maddie for all of their extra effort. Again a raucous applause came from the group. She then brough up Caleb and Rusty to go over the competition and where the events would be held. Caleb laughed, "Lucky for you I am too old to compete allowing some others to win." Everyone laughed and razzed him loudly. Rusty went over some other items like Llama rides for the kids and other fun activities. After they finished Mallory came up and covered the timeline for food and the party later. She reminded some of the younger mothers that the Day Care would be staffed with volunteers to take care of the younger kids as long as needed. Once she finished Lisa and Amy joined her at the podium. Each of them said a few words. The entire group assumed that the next words from Lou would be announcing the start of the day. Instead Lisa came up to the microphone and cleared her throat and Jack and his group started moving toward the stage. "Before we start I wanted to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers for our patriarch, Jack Bartlett. Jack has a long road ahead and is doing as well as he can. You all know him and there is no one tougher than Jack Bartlett." Everyone clapped respectfully all lost in their own thoughts as Lisa continued, " Like I said, he is doing well and I know you would like to know more. So I think you should hear it from the horse's mouth so to speak." The three ladies were now in tears as they stepped back as Jack scooted out onto the stage flanked by Addie and Desi with and the nurse close behind. After a moment of complete shock the entire audience burst into the loudest applause yet. The cowboys hooted and hollered as he approached his wife and granddaughters. Everyone on the stage went to greet him and as Caleb approached he was crying and hugged him. Jack whispered, "Caleb, I feel the same." After 10 or so minutes the crowd settled and Jack was handed the microphone. He spoke slowly and softly, "Well contrary to what people think I am still kicking. I told JT I couldn't miss this. I am not even close to 100% but am working on it." Everyone noticed how hard this was for him as he leaned back exhausted as the nurse came to him making sure he was alright. He smiled at her, "I just need a sec." He gathered himself and continued, "I hear that this is going to be named after me. Well I am not dead yet but I guess that is Ok." Everyone laughed again as tears flowed from the people in attendance. Jack smiled again liking needing the chance to gather himself again. "So everyone enjoy the day and to all you cowboys and cowgirls remember this old saying I was told by my father, Courage is being Scared to Death but Saddling up Anyway. Good luck to you all." Again the applause was deafening as everyone was so excited. All of the great grandkids and a few great-great grandkids rushed to the stage to hug their superstar. At that moment everyone in attendance understood that this was much more than a rodeo and party. It was a celebration and one they all planned to enjoy. As everyone set off to begin the completion, Jack waved over to JT and Shawna who had not stopped smiling. He pulled them both in and whispered, "Thank you for your help, I love both of you very much. Shawna smiled with tears and JT hugged him. "Can we have a ride?" He laughed and they started to move toward the outside arena for the roping competition, with the nurse close behind.
The day was amazing and with Jack there it was perfect. There wasn't a moment that someone wasn't by his side be it family, friends or anyone really. Lisa, Lou and Amy stayed close and the nurse never left him expect to get something to eat. The events were right on time and the competition was heated but friendly. The banter had been at a high rate for the last few weeks. Annie watched Jermey like a hawk as he competed in the roping and bronc riding competition. As she watched she latched on to Addie and grimaced with every twist and turn. When he was pitched off the bronc, she almost fainted but was relieved when he jumped right up and smiled at her. It was time for an early afternoon break for the food so Mallory got on the PA system, "Ok, everyone, it time for a break and enjoy some of our cowboy food in the big tent. We will resume in 45 minutes." Jack was with Lyndy and Wyatt and went into the tent to have something to eat. Lyndy got him some food and sat next to him talking to him quietly, "GG are you doing Ok?" He smiled and whispered slowly, "I sure am but am pretty tired. But sitting with a beautiful woman always makes my day." She blushed and leaned into him. He continued, "I have to say you look exactly like your mom, it is remarkable." She smiled again and whispered, "Thanks GG, I love you so much." Jack went to grab Wyatt's arm, "You better take care of this girl. Ty can tell you I get pretty protective of the woman in this family." Wyatt smiled and answered the man he respected so much, "GG, you can count on it." They continued to eat as people continue to visit Jack. Lyndy noticed that he seemed to be tiring and looked at the nurse, who had already noticed it. She smiled, "Hey Jack after you finish, let's go back to the ambulance so I can check you over." He scoffed but after a look from Lyndy he agreed. She went with him while Wyatt went to get with Lou, Scott, Ty, Amy and Lisa, who were eating with Max and Casey to tell them what was going on. The group converged on the ambulance to see the back door open and Jack being looked over. Lyndy was right next to him holding his hand. They watched from the outside as Jack looked over and smiled weekly. Once she was finished she waved them closer. "Everything is fine but his blood pressure is a little low, most likely because of the activity. I think we need to head back, but not before Jack gets a chance to say goodbye to you and his great grand kids." Wyatt spoke up, "I will get the others." Lyndy smiled, and Jack poked her, "He's a keeper." After good byes, they secured Jack and Max volunteered to go back with him and even though Lisa wanted to Jack told her she needed to stay. Many of the people in the audience saw the ambulance leaving and asked the family if Jack was Ok. They all assured them he was fine, just tired and the nurse wanted him to go back. Almost on cue, Mallory announced that the completion was about to resume. Over the next few hours things were in full out mode. The competitors were focused and cheers and applause was everywhere. Rusty was dominating as always as Haley watched holding her stomach. She didn't want to distract him but deep down she hoped that after the baby was born, he settled a bit and cut back on rodeo. Jeremy was doing well for a first timer and Annie was handling it better than she expected. Maybe the fact that Addie was next to her for each event to keep her sane. While he was getting ready for his bronc riding rotation, Amy and Ty joined her. Amy smiled, "Don't worry sweetie he will be fine. I threatened Caleb to make sure he is and as you know he is a little scared of me." Looking at Ty she leaned into him, "At least he has been practicing not like this guy." They laughed and all looked on as Jeremy was in the box ready to go. The bell rang and he shot out hanging on to the horse that wanted to pitch him off. Annie's eyes were wide as he gyrated on top of that stupid horse. A little bit of it excited her and she was so proud of him, even a little turned on. She made a promise to herself that later she would let him know that. She came back to reality when the horse pitched him off just before the 8 second buzzer. Not until she saw him get up safely did she breathe. His first look was to her and his smile told her he was Ok. Before she could settle, JT ran over, "Annie, he did great, I think we have a real cowboy in the family." She smiled and blushed realizing that everyone thought of him as family as she twirled her promise ring on her finger. Amy grabbed her hand touching the ring, while Ty rubbed her back to settle her, "Annie, he is part of our family and he loves you a lot." Ty added whispering, "And we love both of you too." Jeremy came over and hugged Annie tightly, "Well I survived." She smiled and just held on to him. Everyone dispersed as there were other events to see. Every competition was at the final rounds so the anticipation and excitement continued to grow. All of the finals would be in the main arena and it was packed full of excitement, cheering and most of all togetherness. Amy, Ty and Lisa looked over the crowd beaming with joy as they all the happy people. Lou walked over with Scott and proclaimed, "Well I think things are going well." Lisa was a little subdued, "I wish Jack could be here." Maddie heard her and grabbed her hand, taking her to the announcer's box. She saw that they had a feed set up and that Jack had a laptop watching everything. She looked at the screen and in the corner was Jack, waving at her. Tears came to her eyes and she hugged her great granddaughter and waved at Jack. She whispered, "Thank you Maddie." After everything was done they had the awards ceremony. Haley smiled as Rusty place first in two of the competitions and won the all-around cowboy designation. He pulled her up to be next to him as he received the award and thanked everyone. Lou took the podium and made some final comments. She then held up a I-Pad with Jack on it. "Even though Jack had to leave he was till watching and he just told me he has several cowboys he will get with later. He has come concerns about their performances." The group laughed and Lou closed out the Rodeo. Mallory grabbed the microphone, "Let's eat and let the party begin."
It was later in the evening as most of the family sat on the porch at the Miracle Ranch. Everyone had gone home after a great day and amazing family event for the employees. Before they left Alex and Sam coaxed Amy and Ty to come on to the show later in the week so they could show the video and interviews from the day and gloat on them and the company. Alex joked, "I expect the Jack storyline will get the most attention for sure." As the kids went to bed, Lou, Scott, Lisa, Amy and Ty were the only ones left. After a little silence, Lisa spoke up, "Well this was a great day. I have been around a bit more than you guys and I can't recall an event where everyone had so much fun. But what impressed me the most was the pride they all showed, especially when Jack surprised them all. I really think we wore him out but I am sure he would do it again." She hesitated, "We need to savor these times with him. I spoke to the doctors and they are still not sure how much better he may get." She began to choke up as Amy put her hand on her shoulder, "And it is likely that more strokes or worse will follow. His body is tired and may not have enough fight left in him." They all sat silently in their own thoughts until Scott spoke up, "You know my great grandfather lived to be almost 100 years old and like Jack his body continued to deteriorate in his later years. But the family made sure of one thing. We kept his mind active and to the day he died, he had his wit, wisdom and a hearty laugh. We need to make we give that to him because he has given all of us so much of himself over our lives." The silence continued as now sniffles and tears started. Lou leaned into her husband and now Amy and Lisa were holding each other. Ty put his arm around both of them and spoke with a light chuckle, "Well I am sure of one thing, he would definitely not be happy with this scene. The last thing Jack Bartlett wants is pity or sympathy. I am sure he wants us all to carry on and live the best life we can." After a few more minutes, Lou, Scott and Lisa headed back to Heartland. They considered a quick trip to the hospital but Max let them know that Jack was out like a light and seemed as happy as he had ever been when he came back. Even though they didn't have to, out of habit Amy and Ty checked on the kids smiling as they peeked in before going to their room. Amy was at her dressing table getting ready for bed as Ty laid in bed keeping a close eye on her. He knew she had a million things going through her mind and noticed her demeanor. He got up, threw on his robe and went to her. He gently put his hands on her shoulders as she melted in his hands. She leaned into him without saying a word, needing his strength. He smiled and whispered, "It's Ok babe, Jack really enjoyed himself and that is the best thing we can do for him right now." She smiled as tears came finally begin able to whisper, "Ty, I know I might be selfish but it troubled me to see him like that. He has always been my rock." She stopped as she couldn't talk anymore as she shook in sadness. Ty spoke softly, "Well maybe tomorrow if he can take visitors, all of us should go see him, just for a quick visit. I think the kids would like that, especially JT. And I am sure it would be good for you too. Remember what Scott said, it is important that we are there for him." She smiled, leaning into him. He could tell she had no energy, so he scooped her up and carried her to bed. He got her settled and turned off the lights, joining her. He held her in his arms until she finally fell asleep. He soon followed as the day was tiring, but full of a lot of fun and joy. Lyndy and Wyatt laid next to each other quietly. Like everyone else, the day for them had been tiring but uplifting, especially when they were surprised when their GG showed up. She whispered, "I was so happy to see GG but I have to admit, he looked so different. But he seemed in good spirits." Wyatt smiled, simply acknowledging her. She continued, ""I was really impressed with how well Jeremy did, although Annie was a nervous wreck. Kind of like I was a couple of years ago, cowboy." She rolled over to hold him and again he just smiled moving over to kiss her forehead. After a few more minutes of complete silence, she raise up on her elbow and pulled his face to her, "Ok, we are getting married and promised to always talk to each other, what is up." He took a deep breath and hesitated, "I am just begin selfish." She scoffed and rolled over to face him closely, "Wyatt Miller, talk to me!" He rolled her over to her side and moved in for a kiss, "Ok, I feel selfish because when I saw Jack, all I could think about was my grandma and how horrible it was watching her in the end. All I could do was picture Jack having to go through the same thing. My grandma was so important to me and now Jack is like my own GG and I love him as much as I loved her. I can't stand that he has to go through this." She took a moment to gather her emotions and looked into his eyes kissing his lips, "Wyatt, just like Uncle Scott said we just need to make sure we are there for him as he deals with his illness. He loves you like family and I know your friendship and love are important. He told me he will be at our wedding and is so happy that I found someone like you to be my husband." She giggled, "He said you were a keeper." She buried her head into to his chest as he hugged her tightly. After a few minutes he felt her breathing slow as she was asleep. He smiled and whispered, "I love you Lyndy Bartlett."
At breakfast, everyone was still excited about the rodeo and Jack showing up. Addie was congratulated several times from her siblings about the amazing modified scooter she got for him and they all raved about Jeremy's performance. Amy got their attention, "I spoke to Lisa and asked if we could go see GG today and she thought a visit from the Bordens would be great. She said that Max mentioned he was in good spirits this morning and couldn't stop talking about the rodeo. Lou, Scott, Georgie, Katie and their kids are going this morning so maybe after lunch we can all head over there. Dad and I think it would be good for him and also for all of us." They all agreed and then Ty spoke up, "You know we need to realize that Jack has a long road and the doctors don't know how much more he will improve, so we need to have fun with him and enjoy the time. I know he will." They all headed out for this morning to-dos and committed to meet at lunch and head over to the hospital. Lyndy, Amy and Annie had horses to work with and Wyatt was helping Steven with some check ins and a surgery. Ty had a challenging surgery with Scott on a horse owned by a high end client. Cass was going to assist as it was very complicated. Maddie was going to help over at the Rehoming Center as their business was still hectic. She convinced JT to bring Shawna and Trent over too as long as she got a ride in his Gator. Jeremy and Ricky were helping the ranch hands and Desi had his final checkup with the doctors and after today, he would be 100%. Addie planned to go with him as they both were excited. Everyone was catching up since they had been focused on Jack and the Rodeo, so they were behind and before they knew it, it was lunch. Luckily, Amy had Maggie's bring lunch to the house so they cleaned up, ate and loaded up to go. Jeremy and Ricky were staying to help at the ranch along with Trent and Shawna. Desi's appointment was at the hospital so when he went home, Addie just waited for them there. Amy felt that just family would be the group today so her grandpa wasn't overwhelmed. When they pulled up Lou, Georgie and Katie were loading up the kids. Clay and Scott offered to take them home and as the caravan pulled away the Bordens went to talk with them. Amy hugged her sister and nieces, "So how is grandpa doing?" Georgie spoke up first as Lou seemed quiet, "He is doing good but still seems a little confused. He did perk up when our crazy kids went to him but he just seemed overwhelmed a little." Katie laughed, "Yea, we told them before hand to be calm but actually GG got them riled up. He really had fun yesterday and talked about it. It is just hard because he is really struggling to keep focused, but the nurse and doctor said that is normal." They were all quiet when Amy noticed that Lou needed to speak to her and Ty in private. "Georgie, can you and Katie show these guys where the waiting room is, we need to catch up with your mom. Wait for us there, we won't be long." They headed to a bench outside and sat. Lou was shaking and held onto her sister tightly, "She mumbled, "Amy, he looks so frail and I can see in his eyes how much this has affected him. You know what Lisa said and I am so worried that this is it. He will be like this and more than likely get worse. I am not ready for him to go." Amy and Ty had never seen Lou so forlorn. Amy looked into her sister's eyes ad Ty grabbed her arm. "Lou, trust me I am just as worried as you but no matter what we need to be here for him and make whatever time he has good. I want to be as strong for him like he was when mom died." Lou eyes opened wide, "Oh Amy." Ty added, "I want to be there for him like he was here for Max and I when my mom died. He is always the rock for all of us and now we need to be there for him." Amy and Ty hugged her, just as Georgie and Katie headed out the door. Katie laughed, "I have to tell you that JT is a hoot." They said their goodbyes and headed in to see their kids. Lisa and Max were talking with them when they walked up. Lisa spoke up, "Well it is probably best we go in groups. Amy, you Ty JT and Maddie can go in first and the four others can go after. He is tired but somehow has the strength to see you and is excited. I have already talked to the kids on what to expect so we are ready." When they walked in, Jack eyes lit up and he spoke up, "JT, my man." JT smiled and ran top his lap and embrace. They had a few moments alone and talked quietly as Amy, Ty and Maddie watched in amazement. For some reason it seemed that their bond helped Jack have more life and energy. Later Maddie would ask JT what they talked about but he said he would tell everyone later. The rest of the visit went well as all of the Bordens definitely made Jack happy. As the three girls and Wyatt were visiting, Amy and Ty heard a lot of laughing and happiness. Before they left, Lisa asked Amy and Ty to come in alone. Jack smiled and asked them to have a seat. He spoke softly and with conviction, "I love all of you and your kids are amazing, thank you for coming to see me today. I will continue to fight but no matter what I know I have all of you." Amy smiled as he hugged her. "And one more thing, JT has to talk to you all tonight so make sure you listen to him." A little confused they said their goodbyes and gathered up the kids to head home. Wyatt and Lyndy ordered pizza and salad for a relaxed dinner. Today had been taxing but definitely worth the extra effort.
Before they ate, the kids checked on their horses as Amy and Ty checked up on emails. They sat in the office and were visited by a lot of people catching them up on things and asking about Jack. Ty spoke up, "Looks like Lou set a date for the Board Meeting. We need to get our heads together to get ready for it. It seems she has some ideas on improving our business efficiencies and manage the heavier workload" Amy laughed, "I got an email from Sam at Good Morning Calgary, seems they want us on Wednesday morning. I already put it on both of our calendars. I want to have Mallory come to and she said that it would be great. It seems they two of them hit it off when they were here." They finished up as Amy went to sit on his lap. She smiled as they kissed deeply. "He smiled back, "Well that was nice, but what is up." She took a breath, "I wonder what Grandpa and JT talked about?" He laughed, "Well I am sure we will find out tonight, let's go home." They walked over to the house arm in arm, stealing a kiss now and then. Several onlookers hooted and hollered at them and Caleb told them to get a room. The laughed as they entered the house. The food had just arrived and the kids were setting everything out. After they all filled their plates and got drinks, they gathered around the table. The discussion was about work, school and of course the day with Jack. Lyndy and Wyatt offered to take JT school shopping as the other girls were a little old for it. Amy and Lyndy told them about the crazy horse they had in the morning and all of them talked about the week ahead. School was a few weeks away and everyone was getting excited. All the kids were looking forward to moving up a grade and Wyatt made sure he razzed them about having to still be in school, "Yea Lyndy and I remember when we were in school so long ago. Maybe one day you guys will be done with it and have a lot of fun like we will." They all scoffed and went to tickle him. Ty spoke up, "Well Wyatt, school and training will never stop for you. As a vet, even I still have things to learn. So don't have too much fun yet." JT high fived his dad as Lyndy consoled her finance, "Good one dad!" Amy smiled feeling so happy as she held Ty's hand under the table. Addie looked at her, Mom are you Ok?" She smiled, "I am just really happy and love all of you so much." They finished up and had some ice cream in the living room. They quieted a bit when Wyatt finally spoke up to JT, "OK I'll be the one to ask you JT, what did you and GG talk about and you don't have to tell us if you want to." JT finished his ice cream, set it on the table and went to sit with his mom and dad. He felt that he needed them for this. He took a deep breath, "I know that GG is really sick and I needed to talk to him. At first we joked about fishing but then he asked me a question. He wanted to know if GG Lyndy and Grandma Marion knew he was ill. I told him about my experience when GG came up to me when I was talking to my grandmas. She was very upset and told me you were very sick. I told him I went to tell you guys in the middle of the night and when I got to your room that mom was already on the phone talking to Aunt Lou." He gathered himself to continue as Amy held on to him. "Then he said something that at first shook me a little. He asked me to make sure that when he was with them that we caught up from time to time. He needed me to let everyone know how he was doing and not to be sad. He asked me to be his voice. I didn't know what to say but he smiled and comforted me. I realized that one day I would have to do that and it made me sad. But then he smiled and poked my ribs with his good arm. He told me that that he is not ready quite yet as he still had a lot of things to do and see, Lyndy and Wyatt's wedding, Annie and Addie graduating from college, me in high school and Mads in college. He said he was planning to make sure he was there for all of it." JT sat silently and put his head down, "But then he said that in case he didn't get to see all of those things, he needed me to be able to keep him updated when they caught up from time to time. He was very calm about it and seemed to be happy we had a chance to talk man to man. I told him I would be there for him, just like he was always here for me." At this point he stopped as Amy and the girls were in tears and even Ty and Wyatt were wiping their eyes. It amazed them how mature and confident their little brother was. After a few minutes they settled and enjoyed just being together. After a few minutes of silence JT spoke up again. "And one more thing. He told me that he didn't want sadness and tears. He wanted us to spend time with us and be there when we needed him." He laughed, "He said sadness will not be tolerated and told me to make sure I told everyone that. So he doesn't need sympathy and tears, he only needs love." They all smiled, hugged each other and went to bed. It had been a good day for everyone and each of them were in wonder at their amazing son and little brother. They all slept well dreaming of Jack.
