I recommend you read Fallout: South Carolina and Fallout: The Carolina Republic. This story is the Prequel story to them. This is how the Commonwealth Republic began. This is Nate's Story.
It was the 31st of September, 2290. The Island War has entered its' final Phase. Nate was coordinating every Infantry Division from Far Harbor. The Harbormen helped where they could from running supplies to the front lines or ferrying Commonwealth Republic Soldiers to insertion points. The Council soon voted to have Far Harbor join the Commonwealth Republic. Nate thanked the council of Far Harbor for joining and he welcomed them into the Republic. Captain Avery and Governor Chamberlain signed the treaty that united Far Harbor and the Commonwealth Republic Territories.
At the MS Azalea, Trapper forces tried to take back the old ship from the Commonwealth Republic Army, but with help from Vertibird support, the 4th held their ground as the 1st Power Armor Company came in from Far Harbor and forced the Trappers away. MacCready thanked the Power Armor unit's commander for providing backup. Leon company's Commander, Sergeant Major Michael Woods, nodded his head as he stood in his T-60 Power Armor.
With Danse, he and the 2nd Infantry Division were still holding on at Kitteredge Pass to keep the trappers and Cultists from flanking the other divisions. Dance fired his Combat rifle at a pre-placed explosive to cause a cave in on the trappers and Cultists. Preston ordered the first to take Echo Lake Lumber Mill back from the Cultists and Trappers. One Trapper Leader, A cannibalistic Trapper named Malcolm, came out of his bunker to lead a counter attack, but was quickly shot in the stomach by a Far Harborman armed with a Harpoon gun.
The Harpoon was sharpened to have a Barbed Tip and it stuck Malcolm to a tree. After almost getting it out of him, Malcolm was ended with a shot to his head. That caused many trappers to surrender and the Cultists to kill the surrendering trappers. Commonwealth republic Soldiers killed the Cultists and took the surviving trappers as Prisoners of War. As this happened, at Haddock Cove, Gunner General Benedict Arnold was making sure his men were off the island in whatever they could get. He was going to tell his employer that the island was a lost cause in both manpower and financial aid. He heard gunfire from both directions as the Commonwealth Republic made pushes to take control of the island.
"General, the last of the supplies that we can load up have been. Ready to scrap the rest on your orders." one gunner said to Gunner General Arnold. The man nodded his head and told the soldier to detonate the explosives, doing so deprived the Trappers and cultists of much needed supplies to fight on. Back in Far Harbor, Nate was coordinating the Divisions when a "Far Harborman" tried to ask him a question, but Nate's Pipboy, the one he kept since getting out of Vault 111, went off, revealing the truth.
"FOR ATOM!" Shouted the cultist as he tried to shoot Nate, but Nate just so happened to have had Dogmeat brought from the Commonwealth. The loyal companion bit the man's arm and pulled it down, allowing for members of the Newly formed Commonwealth Republic Military Police to restrain the would-be Assassin. Nate knelt and petted Dogmeat for his quick save before telling the MPs to put the cultist in the local jail and watch him. The Rad crazed Cultist shouted that the Commonwealth Republic will fall to Atom and his holy grace, and the survivors would beg to be welcomed into the children of Atom.
In the Nucleus, Richter was getting more and more Paranoid with the continuous losses in the war, not to mention he had not heard back from the assassin he sent to take out Nate, meaning the assassin was taken out. He decided to lead the men from the front lines, he walked out and took up leading the men facing off against Preston Garvey and the first. He wielded his weapon, a Unique Super Sledge called Atom's Judgment and he ran at Commonwealth Republic soldiers. He slammed it down and caused the CR soldiers to get sent flying. One Cultist prepared to throw a Nuka grenade, a Sniper of the Commonwealth Republic scouts saw that and quickly aimed before he pulled the trigger. The shot struck the Grenade and when it blew, a piece of hot shrapnel caught the High Zealot Confessor in his eyes.
Radical cult members pulled their leader back and took him to The Archemist. She did what she could for the High Zealot Confessor, but it was all in vain. Richter had to now lead the cult's crusade against the Commonwealth Republic Blinded. The Archemist soon realized that with their leader blind, the Children of Atom's chances of winning the war were now impossible so when no one was looking, she slipped out of the Nucleus and on the night of October 6th, 2230, she turned herself over to the first Commonwealth Republic Patrol she found.
NATE'S P.O.V.
I was visiting men who were injured in the latest battles against the cult-Trapper-Gunner Forces when I got a report that the Gunners were no longer an issue. I then got one where a Cultist turned herself over and was at the National Park visitor's center. I walked there and saw several Commonwealth Republic military Police standing guard salute me. I saluted them back as I entered the main building. Seeing Preston, I shook his hand and said, "Where is she?"
"This way sir." Preston said as he led me up the stairs and the leader of the squad who brought her in was Commonwealth Republic Marine Corps 1st Squad, 1st Platoon, Sergeant Ben Gibson. I smiled and shook Ben's hand before I said, "Hello Ben, it's good to see you." He replied with, "Likewise Mr. President, thank you for letting me be part of this new republic. The Defector's in here." he then led me and Preston into a room where I saw her, the Archemist.
"You… you're the president?" she asked me. I nodded my head as I remembered her, she was the doctor of the Nucleus. I asked her why she wanted to Defect to our side. She told me that Richter was losing his mind, mentioning that he would kill Cultist for doing nothing wrong. I was speechless, I knew Richter was a Zealot, but to kill his own.
"One member prayed for Tektus's knowledge and Richter had him hung." Said the Archemist. I was still shocked at that. I looked at Gibson and told him, "Get her to Far Harbor and get her on a boat back to the commonwealth, you are to be her guard. Let no one near her and get her to the state House." Ben nodded his head and walked the Archemist out. I sat down where she was and sighed, Preston asked me if I was ok and I told him, "I don't know Preston, I should have done something before this war happened."
"Sir you could not have known what would happen." Preston told me as he leaned on the wall. I looked at him and said, "But Richter has always been a Fanatic of Atom, I should have seen it sooner. If I had… I could have killed him." Preston pointed out that if he did, then children of Atom would have attacked them sooner. He then said that if Richter was gone, someone much worse could have taken his place.
"I guess that does make sense." I told him. But I then stood up and told Preston to send men to the Oceanarium, we had reports of Children of Atom forces seen there. After that I was approached by one of the CIA Agents Deacon sent here and she told me that the Gunners had all pulled out. I smiled before ordering artillery strikes on the remaining Cultist and Trapper bases, we're ending this war.
RICHTER'S P.O.V.
"SHE'S GONE?!" I shouted to Zealots loyal to me. They had just told me that the Archemist was missing. I growled when I was then informed that the Gunners had left too. My plan to take control of the island from the Far Harbormen and the Commonwealth Republic has been failing miserably. This all started when I killed Tektus in his sleep, the old man tried preaching peace but I knew peace with the outsiders, the traitorous Synth DiMA, the Far Harbormen.
"High Zealot Confessor! High Zealot Confessor!" Shouted a member of my Sect. He then told me that the Commonwealth Republic had begun another push. I ordered all members to fight for Atom. I struggled to lead since I lost my sight, but I knew Atom would come for us, so I prepared to bring Division when I heard Tetkus's Voice call out to me.
"You time is nearly upon you brother, Atom will bring the Sect into his grace but not you for you have committed a sin." said the voice. It was Tektus's Voice. He told me that he knew I had killed him, and that was what Atom had wanted. He then told me that the Archemist was also doing what Atom wanted her to do. I got on my knees and begged for guidance. He told me that division was upon us and that we needed to act. I stood up and began to walk out when I was pushed back into the room I was in.
"High Zealot Confessor Brian Richter. We've been sent to bring you to our president to stand trial for your crimes." Said a voice. When he said president, I knew he was a Commonwealth republic Soldier. I tried to fight, but my weakened state caused me to be bested again. I felt metal bands binding my hands behind me and then a gag around my mouth. I struggled to get free but they had a tight grip on me. As we walked out, I heard some of my followers try to rescue me but there were silenced Shots, meaning that they were special forces who had me and had suppressors on their rifles
I then felt the wind hit me, meaning they got me outside. Afterwards, I heard a Vertibird landing nearby and when I was pushed, I landed on the bed of a Vertibird. I may not have been in one for some time, but I will never forget the feeling of the floor of a Vertibird.
THIRD PERSON P.O.V.
Nate stood in the middle of the Eden Meadows Cinemas parking lot with Preston, MacCready, and two Commonwealth Republic Military Police officers as he watched the Vertibird land in front of him. Soon the Special Forces squad he ordered to capture Richter got off it while dragging their target off. They walked him over to their president as the Vertibird then took off. They saluted Nate before the squad leader said, "Target captured Mr. President." Nate thanked the Special Forces squad for getting the job done while the two MPs took Richter from them.
"Hello Richter, hope the ride was comfortable." Nate asked him. Richter grunted before he said, "I should have killed you when Atom gave me a chance." Nate said nothing before Richter was taken away. He then looked at Preston and told him, "Make sure word's spread, we have the Children of Atom's Leader." Preston nodded his head and walked off. Nate sighed as Piper joined him with Dogmeat and she put a hand on Nate's back.
"You good?" she asked. Nate looked at her and said that with Richter captured the Children of Atom would hopefully surrender, but he had doubts they would actually do that. Nate then went back to Far Harbor and spoke to Captain Avery as Allen Lee walked up to them wearing a Commonwealth Republic Militia coat. He saluted Nate and told him that the Far Harbor Volunteer Militia was ready for whatever he needed of them.
"Alright Allen, the first Power Armor Company is being deployed near the Echo Lake Lumber Mill to make an assault on Rayburn Point. Trappers are there and we need them cleared out. Think you and your Militia can provide backup?" Nate asked him, to which Allen said, "Don't worry Mr. President, we'll do what we can." before he picked up his Assault Rifle and headed out as Old Longfellow walked in. Nate and Old Longfellow locked eyes,smiled at each other, and shook hands. Nate told the experienced Hunter that it was good to see him.
"Likewise Mr. President, I must say I never took you to be in Politics." Old Longfellow said to him, which made Nate chuckle and reply, "Yeah I know right? I only did it to see where I stood, turns out I have a lot of respect from the people and they trusted me to be their president. Though I'm surprised you agreed to lead a militia squad in this war." Old Longfellow crossed his arms and said, "Yeah, well, when the Children of Atom attacked your boys at the beginning, my mind went straight to Hannah and our unborn baby, I worried for those who would try that same thing on them. So when Allen asked for volunteers, I picked up my Lever-Action Rifle and took charge of one squad."
Nate remembered the time he and Old Longfellow talked about their wives and the old hunter telling Nate about his wife and how the Children of Atom warped her mind, caused her to have a Miscarriage, and let trappers kill her. Nate then saw his old companion tearing up so he gently hugged him, remembering what happened made Old Longfellow upset. Piper watched as her love comforted Old Longfellow and that made her fall for him more.
Afterwards, Allen and the Far Harbor Volunteer Militia joined the first Power Armor Company and began their Assault on Rayburn Point. The Trappers fought against the Commonwealth Republic Forces, but with the Power Armor Company fighting alongside the Far Harbor Volunteer Militia, they couldn't hold them back and were forced to retreat from Rayburn Point back to mainland Maine. Allen smiled and did a head count for the wounded. The leader of the Power Armor Company made sure the Power armor suits of his men were in tip top shape as they varied in each set. They came from all over the Commonwealth, many were pieces that Nate had found on his travels, some were from the Brotherhood Of Steel.
A good number of Power Armor however were taken from high ranking Gunners and Raiders. The Company Commander, Captain Michael Woods, stood in his X-01 Mk IV Power Armor as he looked over the prisoners. Captain Woods was then approached by Allen and asked for the republic's plans for Prisoners. Woods told him, "The Republic wants them to stand trial, but I feel you militia folk think differently." Allen nodded his head and told him that most of the Volunteers lost people to both the trappers and the Children of Atom. Woods told him that they can't kill Prisoners of War.
"Understood, let's get these prisoners to cells." Allen Said to his men. Those in the Militia were pissed, but did as they were ordered. They escorted their prisoners away. Back in Far Harbor, Nate looked at a very secured Richter and told him, "We'll be moving on the Nucleus soon, we're going to take it and end this war soon. You will be tried and most likely found Guilty, do you have anything to say for yourself?" Richter lifted his head and looked up before saying, "Atom spoke to me, told me my actions were just. I have been judged by him and he has found me not guilty." Nate sighed and knew that Ricther would not change. So he ordered the men to transport Richter to the Commonwealth for trial.
After Richter was taken off the island, Nate had the Archemist taken to the Nucleus and she read a speech to the remaining Members of the Children of Atom in the Nucleus. The Speech said, "Members of the Children of Atom, the War is all but over. The Commonwealth Republic is willing to cease hostilities here if you all surrender the Nucleus to them. The War was a foolish war led by a foolish man. He did not care for us, he wanted division all for himself, what he said about Atom taking his sight to help the war was a lie. Atom took Richter's sight as punishment for starting this war. Atom wants you to surrender so he can truly welcome us to his embrace."
Silence fell around the Nucleus before the door opened up. Several Children of Atom followers walked out, armed with Radium rifles. The Commonwealth Republic forces were ready for a fight, but were surprised to see them lay down their weapons and put their hands up. Nate walked up to one member as she said to him, "Richter's more fanatical followers are in there, prepared to make a last stand, they thought about division, but without the lord's key they couldn't do it." Nate nodded his head and called for the 1st platoon of the Power Armor Company.
"Are you all surrendering?" Nate asked them, but before they could reply, a Fanatic loyal to Ricther came out and fired his Radium Rifle that he modified with a Hardened automatic receiver, a Long Barrel, a Marksman's stock, a Large magazine, Standard sights, and a Muzzle brake as he shouted, "GLORY TO ATOM!" Nate pulled the woman out of the way as the other Atomites were gunned down. One or two Commonwealth Republic Soldiers took some shots, but the shots were returned by one Soldier using a procured Harpoon Gun that he got from Allen Lee that he called the Admiral's Friend. The Harpoon that was shot sent the Fanatic Cultist flying backwards back into the Nucleus before he could get another burst off.
"Are you alright ma'am?" Nate asked the woman Atomite. She nodded as she looked around at her fellow Cultist, all dead. She saw that what she was doing was even more Folly and denounced Atom. Nate helped her up and walked her back before seeing First Lieutenant Zeke and the 1st Platoon of the 1st Power Armor "Leon" Company. He saluted Zeke and told him, "Lead the charge in, take The Nucleus." Zeke nodded his head and shouted, "OK COOL CATS! WE'RE GOING TO BE IN TIGHT QUARTERS! KEEP YOUR GUNS UP! AND FINGERS OFF THE TRIGGERS!" Zeke said as he pulled out his combat Rifle. The Commonwealth Republic Soldiers nodded their heads as the 1st platoon, 1st Power Armor Company led the charge into the nucleus.
Nate walked the woman to the Echo Lake Lumber Mill where members of the Medical Corps greeted them and took her in as he told them, "She has no injuries but I want you to watch her." the Medical Staff nodded their heads before one shouted, "MR. PRESIDENT!" as she pointed behind Nate. Nate slowly turned to see Brother Kane aimed a Radium rifle right at him. Local Commonwealth Republic Soldiers ran out and aimed at him but Nate shouted, "NO ONE FIRE!"
NATE'S P.O.V.
I had my hands up in the air as I looked at Kane and told him, "Kane… put the gun down." But he shook his head and said, "You destroyed the Children of Atom. My home… why shouldn't I send you to hell, away from Atom's Grace." I slowly walked to him while saying, "Cause the Children of Atom lives on, in the Commonwealth. My people have taken many cultists prisoner and talked to one, Mother Isolde. She leads a sect of the Children of Atom that live in the Glowing Sea. Those who we let go will be sent to her sect to live."
"You're lying… Richter told me you wiped out all the Children of Atom sects in the Commonwealth." Kane said to me. I shook my head and told him, "No, Mother Isolde is alive and well. I made a promise that if her sect were to accept those who were captured in the Island War, then we would let them all go. You had nothing to do with the starting of the war, it was Ricther who started it. And the Archemist told us what Richter confided in her. He himself killed Tetkus." Kane gripped the Radium Rifle in his hands and shouted, "You're LYING!"
"He's not!" Said a voice from behind me. I looked and saw the Archemist walking towards us. She said that Richter said to her as she treated his eyes that he killed Tetkus in his sleep, suffocation. Kane was speechless and he slowly lowered his rifle, if he wouldn't believe me at least he should believe the Archemist. She and I slowly approached him and got to the point where I could take his Radium rifle and the Archemist comforted him as two MPs took Kane into a cell. Sighing, I nearly fell onto my ass. Medical officers rushed to my side. I assured them I was ok, my body just relaxed after the Radium Rifle was taken away.
Later, I was told that the Nucleus was taken and those in there were taken out as they refused to surrender. I sighed, I knew that would be the inevitable outcome. I at least tried. But now with the Nucleus taken and Richter arrested, all that's left is the Trappers. I ordered the Forest of the Island to be swept clean, every cave, every nook and cranny to be searched, not one Trapper was to be left free. The Men followed my orders and that was when I was told that some trappers got onto boats and fled westward from Rayburn Point, to the Maine mainland. Possibly the Trappers here were sent from the mainland and were a scouting force.
Once the Island was secured, I declared the Island War to be over and now the rebuilding of the Island could begin. But first, Richter's trial. I sat on the Military tribunal as one of the three judges as civilians sat as the Jury, Richter and several of his followers, along with gunners and Trappers all put in pleas of Not guilty for war crimes committed During the Island War. richter's charges were attacking us without Provocation, murdering his leader, and ordering the torture of Prisoners of War.
"I did only as Atom decreed." was his only defense. I sighed at that comment as what would be called the Quincy Quarry Trials went on until October 23rd, 2290. The Jury didn't take long to make verdicts on many of them. For the lower ranking Cultists they were released into Mother Isolde's custody and became part of her peaceful sect of the Children of Atom. Those who were found Guilty of the small charges were sent to Jail where they could serve their time in the Prisoner Battalion, who had become a hardened and Veteran unit under Baker and Captain Wes Before him. But for Richter and his lieutenants, the Trapper higher ups we captured along with Gunner Commanders, they helped orchestrate the Number of Casualties for both Civilians and Military so they were sentenced to death.
The Gunners were taken to a spot where we had gathered Feral Ghouls and though it may be considered inhumane, we fed them to the ghouls. The Trappers we had were executed by the Firing squad, the Children of Atom we gave to the people to decide on how to deal with them. Some towns slaughtered them, others simply hung them. But Ricther, to make him not a Martyr, we left him alive in a secured Facility, the revamped and repurposed old US Army Supply Depot of Fort Strong, now called Strong penitentiary Prison. He would remain there to the end of his days. But as Richter was being taken away, a shot rang out.
THIRD PERSON P.O.V.
Preston forced Nate down to protect him as everyone scrambled. But Nate stood up and saw it. Richter was on the ground with blood oozing out of his head, with Brother Kane holding his guard's 10mm Pistol aiming in the Direction of Richter's body. Brother Kane dropped to his knees and then dropped the Pistol before he said, "That was for Tetkus." The Archemist walked over to him and comforted the Children of Atom member.
Members called for Kane's death, but Nate and the Archemist were able to keep Kane alive. He and the Archemist were then excommunicated from the Children of Atom to keep the peace in Mother Isolde's Peaceful Sect of the Children of Atom. Nate told them that with Preston and the other commanders all living in Sanctuary Hill, they would be safe there. The Archemist and Kane thanked him as Preston escorted the two to their new home. Nate sighed as he was finally happy that the Island war was over, but now comes the new issue, setting up outposts along the Coastline up to the Island as it was now a Commonwealth territory.
In his Office, Nate looked at a map of the Old United States before the Commonwealths were formed and mainly focused on the area that was the New England Commonwealth as Piper came in with some water and Grilled Radstag. He smiled at her and thanked her before being asked about the map. Nate said, "We're going to be needing outposts all along the coast to Far Harbor. Not to mention the bridge that was there needs to be fixed up. We can't keep using boats to ferry supplies, when Winter hits, the docks are useless."
"I see, so what's the plan?" Piper asked him. Nate pulled out another map of a single state and said, "This is New Hampshire. The State above us. We would need to travel through it in order to get to Mainland Maine. Problem is that I don't know who is there, or if there's anyone there at all. Not to mention we could run into Raiders, so I'm going to make a proposal to congress. We expand north, anyone we come across group wise, we offer peace and alliance terms with them." Piper looked at him and rubbed his back. That was when Preston walked in and said, "Sir, Piper, we have a group coming from up North, they heard about us through Caravans and wanted to see if we could meet them. They call themselves… the Green Mountain Men."
