Plane crash and field surgery
Disclaimer: Hawaii Five-0 and its characters do not belong to me.
Author's note: Dear readers, this is my first story I ever wrote. It's been in my head for a while and I needed to write it down. So please be nice to me ;)
1) English is not my first language; please forgive me for any mistakes.
2) I'm not a doctor, but I work in the medical field. I'm aware that many of the things I've written are not possible in reality. But let's just pretend for the sake of the story. If you don't like it - don't read it ;)
3) Premises to know for my story:
Imagine that Danny once had a pilot's license and is able to land a Cessna in an emergency. He also has some medical knowledge, having studied medicine for a few semesters before going to police school.
Summary (AU to 6x25)
The story begins in episode 6x25, where Steve's life is at stake after their flight is attacked and Steve is shot. But this time things are a bit different... They haven't landed on Oahu, but on an uninhabited island, and a storm is coming. When Danny can't stop the bleeding from the gunshot wound, the two decide to do the unthinkable. Will Danny be able to save Steve's life? And will Kono and Chin arrive in time before it's too late? (lSteve whump! Danny angst)
I added a little of the conversation that took place on the plane from episode 6x25, I hope that's okay.
Chapter 1
Danny had a funny feeling to his gut about Steve's plan. He was only half joking when he said," I'll go get my will sorted out," after he had taken a quick look at the fake identities Jerry had created for them.
His instincts usually didn't betray him, and now he was getting proof of it - again!
He would rather have decided that he was wrong, but now it was too late to object. And he knew for a fact that Steve wouldn't have listened to him anyway.
They were in the middle of a flight from the Big Island back to Oahu - pretending to be a drug transport to catch the bad guys at the end. At least that was their hope. Things were going smoothly until their Cessna was attacked by a black, unmarked helicopter and everything turned into a nightmare...
Without warning, the shots came suddenly and mercilessly from a machine gun.
Steve had no chance to react and Danny could only watch in horror as the side of the machine was perforated like a Swiss cheese.
It only took a few seconds before the helicopter turned and flew away. The bastards were obviously pleased with the result of their work.
Danny turned around and looked for Dae Won and his partner. Dae Won was in a half-sitting position, motionless in the back seat, his head hanging limply in front of him. Danny could see blood seeping from his head and was about to check for a pulse when the plane began a dangerous loss of altitude.
He had to get his attention back on the aircraft. Instinctively, he took over the stirring.
Once he had the plane under control, he took a look to his partner.
Steve was pressed against the back of his seat, groaning and looking like he was trying to get pain under control through controlled breathing.
"Steve… Steve….Oh no...You okay?" Danny asked in a worried voice as he saw Steve struggling with his breathing and wrapping an arm protectively around his midsection. "Danny - you, you need to take over the controls - I - I think… I got hit. – What about you, you alright?" came Steve's breathless reply.
Even though he was in a bad situation, Steve needed to know if Danny was okay or not - that was Steve, always more concerned about everyone else than himself!
"I'm okay, Steve," Danny said, putting a comforting hand on Steve's shoulder.
After a short pause, he added, "Well, besides, we've just been attacked and my pilot's been shot, of course... But ... don't worry, I've already taken over the controls" Danny tried to reassure Steve.
Steve didn't miss the slightly sarcastic undertone in Danny's statement, with which his partner tried to lighten the serious situation they were in.
"Good, that's good," Steve sounded somewhat of relieved that at least Danny hadn't been hit.
In the meantime, Danny discovered that the plane's tank must have been hit, because they were continuously losing fuel.
As soon as he realized this, one engine after another failed. Great, now we've lost both engines - what else can go wrong? Danny thought.
Danny's heart hammered in his chest he tried to keep the rising panic at bay, while he was busy trying to keep the machine under control. He took a deep breath in an attempt to calm down.
"Ok, no need to panic, I've done this before." Danny was reminding himself. Despite having his hands full, he managed to take another glance at his injured partner, who was far too silent for his liking. That's when he saw the nasty wound on Steve's lower abdomen, blood dripping to the floor.
"Oh, jeez...Steve you're bleeding and this wound doesn't look good; try to put as much pressure on it as you can."
"What about Dae Won?" Steve asked as if he hadn't heard Danny's request.
"I think he took a shot to the head, but that shouldn't be your concern right now, you need to take care of yourself, seriously Steve!" Danny demanded.
One problem less, Danny couldn't help but think as he recalled the image of Dae Won, who was most likely dead.
"I'm gonna die, Danny," Steve said simply and with a weak voice.
Danny had to swallow the shock Steve's words had caused him.
"No, you're not, Steve, you're not!" Danny protested. "Steve, I promise I will land this plane safely. You will be patched up at the nearest hospital and everything will be fine. You just have to hang on, okay?"
Danny couldn't hear any reply from Steve, but he needed to get back his attention to the task, which needed all his concentration now.
He didn't know how long he hadn't flown a Cessna. Since there was never a need, he had decided not to renew his license years ago.
But he tried hard to remember, telling himself that it was like riding a bike...once you learn it, you'll never forget it, right?
Still, he knew he had to make an SOS call ASAP to get help.
He grabbed the radio, which fortunately was still working - at least for now...
"Mayday! Mayday!
I'm in a Cessna aircraft on my way to Oahu.
And I have a serious, serious problem.
Mayday! Mayday! Can anyone hear me?"
"This is Honolulu International Control.
We read you. Go ahead."
"This is Detective Danny Williams with the Five-O task force.
Our pilot's been shot. I'm losing fuel and we also lost both of our engines.
I'l need to make an emergency landing and I need EMT's on standby right after we land."
"Detective, are you able to fly that machine und performing an emergency landing?"
"I don't think I got a choice... I had a pilot's license once... Well, I hope I remember correctly what I learned in the flight simulator about emergency landings."
"Okay, good, detective. You know that your best chance of survival is a water landing, right?"
"I know, but like I said, our pilot - my partner's been shot. I might not be able to pull him out of the water. So I'd rather try to glide this thing in the direction of the nearest beach."
"I understand your concern for your friend, but consider yourself. Your best chance of survival is a water landing."
"Listen, I'm not gonna put it down in the water. I'm putting it down on the beach, okay?"
"Detective, there is something else you should know…"
"What else?"
"There's a storm coming. We may not be able to send a rescue team for at least the next 24 hours. "
Oh great - what else could go wrong? Danny thought, well, of course a storm must be coming, just when we need paramedics on standby!
"Detective, what's your current position?"
"Control, I see Kahoʻolawe right in front of me. My current position is…
Danny was about to give the coordinates to the officer at the control centre, he hadn't quite finished when he heard a strange noise through his headphones and then nothing at all.
"Control, do you read me? Hello, do you read me?...Is there anyone still on the other side?"
Danny tried to switch to another channel and tried again...
Nothing but silence greeted him at the other end of the line. Then he realized that the radio must be dead.
"Damn it!" Danny cursed.
His only hope was that they had gotten enough information on the other side to locate their position, but in fact he had no idea when exactly the radio went off. He also knew that Kahoʻolawe Island wasn't the best place to land a plane. Especially if you had an emergency patient on board who needed immediate medical attention. It was an uninhabited island with little infrastructure. On top of that, there were only a few places to put the plane on the beach (at least from the direction he was coming) maybe the southwest point would be an option, Danny estimated.
But it was the closest place to land, and he knew their fuel probably wouldn't last much longer.
Now he turned his attention back to Steve.
Steve was lying on his seat motionless, probably unconscious.
Oh Shit!
Danny knew this was even worse because Steve was no longer putting pressure on the wound and the landing would be more dangerous for Steve because he wouldn't be able to protect himself.
"Hey Steve, listen to me. I know you've never been good at listening to me, but right now you got no choice, you stubborn son of a bitch. Wake up! Hey! Listen to me, do not die, okay? I'm not landing this thing for you to die on me! You understand? Huh?"
"Danny - why are you yelling at me?" was Steve's weak reply.
"Steve, good, all right, you're awake! Get down and get ready to land, keep your head down and don't forget to keep pressure on your wound!"
Saying that, he quickly made sure that Steve had his belt on properly, and then he had to get ready.
….Ok - here we go...
Danny gathered all his courage, pushed his fears aside, and focused only on the task at hand.
A/N: Ok guys. This is it! My first chapter at all and I promise it will get much worse – at least for Steve... or maybe also for Danny?
What do you think?
