Hi all,
Here's the first chapter of my revised Mage's Path story. It can almost be called a new story, as there will be a lot of differences, but there will be elements from the previous story. I have learned a lot from when I first posted the original story, so I hope you enjoy this version more.
Harry Potter rushed into the school library, his face lighting up with a sense of relief and accomplishment. Escaping Dudley and his relentless bullying felt like a precious win for the ten-year-old boy. In his young life, such moments of triumph were rare, making each one all the more cherished.
The library was his safe haven, a place even Dudley was afraid to visit because the librarian was strict about keeping order.
Dudley and his friends enjoyed playing 'Harry Hunting,' in which they chased and thrashed him when they caught him. It was one of the most popular games at school. If he had only had to avoid Dudley at school, things would have been a lot easier. The boy was already extremely overweight, and he couldn't run for long without stopping to catch his breath. But Dudley had his friends to help him, who weren't in the same weight class as him.
"Just you wait," Dudley said, standing in the doorway. "You can't hide in there forever!"
Harry gave him the two-finger salute, which had Dudley stepping into the library. Dudley cracked his knuckles and looked at him with a hostile expression.
Mrs. Woods, the librarian, looked up from her book at the commotion, her expression one of mild disapproval for Dudley's disruptive behaviour. "Is there a problem, Mr Dursley?"
"No problem at all, Mrs. Woods," Dudley said with a fake smile before departing. He made sure to give Harry a threatening look first.
"Thank you, Mrs Woods," Harry said.
"Will the two of you ever get along? Family should stick together."
"In an ideal world," Harry snorted as he began walking towards a section of the library containing fantasy literature.
"I have a new book today that you might be interested in," Mrs Woods said, causing Harry to pause. He walked over to the counter, and she handed him a book.
"What is this?" Harry asked, flipping through the pages. The book was titled Advanced Fighting Fantasy and was first published in the eighties.
"It is a type of fiction known as pen and paper roleplaying games," Mrs Woods explained, "in which participants describe the actions of their characters through speech and sometimes movement. Participants choose the actions of their characters based on their characterisation, and the actions succeed or fail according to a predetermined system of rules and guidelines, which usually includes dice-rolling. Within the rules, players are free to improvise; their decisions influence the game's direction and outcome."
"I only understood about two words of what you just said."
"Go ahead and read the book. You will catch on quickly. I thought if you became interested in it, you might form your own group of friends."
"Yeah, with Dudley around, I'm not going to have any luck with that, but I will read the book," Harry told her. "Be honest, Mrs. Woods. You are showing me the book because you want someone to share your interests."
Mrs Woods's face flushed. "Get out of here, you rascal."
Harry sank into his familiar armchair, tucked away in a quiet corner of the library, the scent of old books enveloping him like a comforting hug. When he opened the book Mrs. Woods had given him, he felt a surge of excitement as he immersed himself in the roleplaying game's intricate rules and mechanics.
The idea that every action could be neatly defined seemed oddly appealing in comparison to his life's chaotic unpredictability. He found himself yearning for similar clarity and structure in his own life.
Harry sank into the worn armchair, its leather cracked and peeling, nestled in the library's quietest corner. The musty scent of old books enveloped him, a familiar comfort that eased the tension in his shoulders. He cracked open Mrs. Woods' gift, the pages crisp and new against his fingertips. As he delved into the roleplaying game's complex rules, his eyes widened with growing excitement.
Each action in the game, neatly defined and regulated by dice rolls and statistics, held a strange appeal. Harry's fingers traced the orderly charts and tables, a stark contrast to the unpredictable chaos of his daily life. He found himself craving that structure, that certainty, in his own world.
Unbidden, memories of inexplicable incidents bubbled to the surface of his mind. The most vivid memory was last year, when he was fleeing Dudley's gang. In a dizzying blur, he'd found himself on the school roof, fingers scrabbling for purchase on rough shingles as he clung to a smoke-blackened chimney.
He still remembered the vertigo, the wind whipping his hair, and the baffled faces of his pursuers far below. The wail of approaching sirens, the firefighters' gentle hands as they'd brought him down. Then, the burning in his ears from his aunt's shrieks, the ache in his arm from his uncle's grip as they'd dragged him home.
Since then, he'd started a secret diary, its pages filled with cramped handwriting documenting each bizarre event. Alone in his cupboard, he'd attempted to control these powers, focusing until his headache. But they remained elusive, seemingly tied to his most intense emotions, unpredictable, and wild.
Magic. The word whispered in his mind, equal parts thrilling and terrifying. It had to be magic.
The ringing of the school bell brought him back to reality. He looked up, his stomach dropping, as he realised his lunch break was almost over. Reluctantly, he closed the book. As he pushed himself up from the chair, something caught his eye. The gold-embossed title on the book's cover shimmered and shifted. It had changed to "The Gamer."
"What the hell is this?" Harry took off his old sellotaped glasses and quickly wiped them clean on his sweater. However, when he looked at the cover again, the title remained the same.
Curiosity piqued, Harry reopened the book, only to discover that the words on the first page had changed into a cryptic invitation.
Do you wish to make a contract with Gaia to acquire the power of the Gamer?
*DISCLAIMER: Gaia is a powerful sentient force that cannot be controlled or predicted. The Gamer ability enables the player to transform the world and himself into a real-life video game governed by levels, attributes, skills, and quests. This transformation is permanent, and the player must live with the consequences. Although it grants the player great power, he must earn it with blood, sweat, and tears.
*Rules are subject to updates and amendments without the player's permission.
*Write your name at the bottom of the page to accept the terms and gain the Gamer ability. After signing the contract, a dungeon will appear that will teach you all you need to know.
Harry's brow creased. "Is this for real?"
The book's sudden transformation should have terrified him, yet a strange calm settled over him instead. His previous strange experiences, combined with the book's revelations about roleplaying mechanics, had fueled his belief that this was real and intended for him. It was as if the disparate pieces of his life were coming together, propelling him towards this watershed moment.
More information was provided beneath the initial text, including additional details and a list of rules that he, as a player, was required to follow. He went through them, hoping to get a better understanding of what was being offered.
The Gamer's ability emerged in response to a troubling phenomenon that was gradually and insidiously invading Earth. Dimensional cracks appeared, leading to other realms teeming with dangerous monsters who could threaten the planet if the cracks widened enough to rupture. Gaia was temporarily holding them back to protect Earth by creating dungeons to contain them, but she needed a more permanent solution because she couldn't hold them back forever.
That's where he came in. In exchange for granting him access to incredible power and the ability to change his fortunes, he had to deal with these dimensional cracks. They would appear in the real world as gates that he could only enter after meeting certain conditions. He would be the only one who could see them, but if they were not dealt with in a timely manner, they would have negative environmental consequences, as well as the possibility of rupture.
The dungeons sounded dangerous, but they would be his primary means of increasing power and earning extra rewards.
The Gamer's ability would spread gradually from the point of initiation, rather than affecting the entire world at once. Travelling outside the abilities' influence wouldn't have any negative consequences for him, but no opportunities will be present in those areas. Dungeons will not appear in areas outside of the abilities' influence, preventing him from being initially overwhelmed by a world full of dungeons.
There was a quest system in which Gaia assigned him quests to complete in exchange for rewards. The main quests were the most important, with the majority involving events that had a significant impact on his personal life. But they needed to be completed within a specific time limit, and there were consequences if he didn't complete the quest in time. Not from Gaia, but from the events themselves. He had the impression that his life would be turbulent, whether he had the ability or not.
As a player, he needed to keep Gaia's existence, and his ability, a secret, under the penalty of swift and fatal repercussions for any breach. The ability would provide methods to help him hide his secret, but he may need to create a believable explanation for those who were suspicious of him.
Harry leaned back in his seat, absorbing the information and weighing the consequences of accepting the offer.
He understood the fundamentals of the offer—the allure of power mixed with perilous danger—but the true nature of this ability remained unknown. How does this game interact with reality? Was he really willing to put his life in danger for the chance to gain power? Would that truly change his life, or would he become nothing more than a tool for Gaia to rid the world of these dimensional cracks? Once he made his decision, there was no turning back.
Uncertainty clawed at him, questioning the wisdom of giving in to a mysterious entity's whims. His rational mind warned him of unknown dangers, urging him to stick to the safe path.
A familiar spark of defiance ignited within Harry. How many times had he dreamed of escaping the Dursleys, of being someone—anyone—else? This ability, as dangerous as it might be, offered a chance to rewrite his story. With a mix of trepidation and exhilaration coursing through his veins, Harry squared his shoulders. He'd spent his whole life existing as a poor, abused orphan; now it was time to live.
"Screw it," Harry murmured. "Let's just go for it."
With a trembling hand, Harry took a pen from his pocket and hesitated only briefly before inscribing his name on the page, accepting whatever fate awaited him.
The words shimmered briefly before the book dissolved into cascading motes of light, which swirled around him in a mesmerising dance before merging into his being. He barely had time to process the surreal sight.
A wave of dizziness washed over him, plunging him into darkness.
Harry jolted awake, his heart racing as a brief sense of disorientation washed over him. He struggled to piece together the events leading up to his sudden loss of consciousness.
A glimmer of light dancing on the floor caught his attention, and he slowly raised his head to see a glowing portal standing in front of him. The sight was so startling that he found himself frozen in place, unable to tear his gaze away.
"Is this a gate?"
He patted himself down, searching for any sign that his reality had shifted, but he didn't feel any different. The gate's surface rippled and shifted, its liquid-like substance undulating and contorting as if a powerful force was trapped within, struggling to break free. Intrigued but wary, Harry stood up and cautiously extended his hand towards the gate. His fingertips came into contact with the strange substance, feeling it's cold wetness and unexpected resistance.
Suddenly, a sinuous tendril emerged from the liquid-like surface of the gate, wrapping itself around Harry's wrist with a vice-like grip. Startled, he jerked back, adrenaline coursing through him as he broke free from the tendril's grasp and stumbled back into his chair.
Why the hell was that gate attacking him?
"I should have known better than to trust so easily. Note to self, Harry: Never accept any offers that..." His voice trailed off as he fixated on the gate, watching as the liquid shifted to form distinct words on its surface.

There was a lot of information to unpack, and he took some time to peruse it to get a better understanding of it.
A sudden thought struck him. What had happened to Mrs Woods? Harry rushed to the counter, only to find it deserted. Was Mrs. Woods in her office? He called out her name, but there was no response.
"She could have gone outside."
As he tried to leave the building, he ran into an invisible barrier. Unfortunately, his face took the brunt of the impact. Harry rubbed his stinging nose, feeling aggrieved.
A floating, transparent window appeared before him, startling him. Harry stepped back but the window followed him, hovering at eye level. Intrigued but cautious, he extended his hand towards it, only to be surprised as his fingers passed through the ethereal display as if it were a mirage.
"What is this supposed to be?"
Harry focused on the text within the floating window, hoping to find some answers.

Harry reviewed the quest description. "It seems simple enough, but having to fight monsters will be difficult to adapt to."
Despite what he said, a surge of excitement bubbled up within him. This quest marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life, and he was eager to embark on the journey to see where it took him.
Harry closed the window. However, something in the description bothered him, so he returned to the front counter. He vaulted over it and slipped into the office.
Harry's eyes widened when he saw Mrs Woods sitting behind her desk. She was frozen in the act of reaching into the drawer.
"Mrs. Woods? Are you alright?" There was no response from the motionless figure before him.
"So, time has been paused within reality as well."
Hopefully, this was a one-time occurrence.
It dawned on him that Mrs. Woods would remain in this suspended state until he completed the quest. He would also be stuck here, without any food or water to sustain him. Would hunger and thirst even affect him in this perpetual state? Regardless, he only had one option open to him
Harry returned to the gate. He took a deep breath and stepped forward, allowing the tendril to draw him into the gate. He experienced a brief period of darkness and coldness before exiting from the other side, and the momentum from the exit sent him tumbling across the floor.
"Just brilliant," Harry grumbled, wincing as he got to his feet.
He took a look around his new surroundings. The room looked similar to Mrs. Woods's office, albeit shabbier and more barren. The surfaces were covered in dust and grime, indicating that the place had been abandoned for quite some time. He knew Gaia created the dungeon, but it felt very real to him.
The only thing of interest was a large wooden chest, which beckoned him to explore it. Harry approached the chest and lifted the lid, revealing several items within. The first to catch his eye was a weathered book with an image of a gate on the front, similar to the one he had stepped through. When he picked it up, he was greeted with another window.
The player has successfully fulfilled the prerequisites needed to unlock the Gamer Essential's Grimoire. Would you like to absorb its knowledge? Yes/No
Hint: Even if you say no, as the book will remain available for your learning at a later time. But why would you want to do that?
"I may be going in blind here, but there doesn't appear to be any downsides to acquiring it."
Based on his previous experience with verbal commands, Harry said "yes" out loud, and the book vanished into motes of light before disappearing into his body.
"Will this become a regular occurrence?"
Another window appeared.
The player has acquired two Paths from the Gamer Essential's Grimoire and has been added to the Skill Board. Two skills have already been unlocked, but the remaining ones require path points.
Gamer Essential's Grimoire
This Grimoire teaches the player skills necessary for dungeon delving. It is recommended that the player spend some of his first skill points on learning skills from these two skill paths.

Harry grinned. Should he put it to the test?
"Magelight." A radiant orb materialised above him, casting a warm glow that banished the shadows in his immediate surroundings.
"Brilliant!" Harry was briefly captivated by the magic before returning his attention to the treasures in the chest.
He picked up the dagger next. It was made of steel, and the blade shone in the flickering magelight, its edge honed to razor sharpness. The hilt, wrapped in worn leather, provided a comfortable grip, with subtle grooves etched into the metal to add stability.
Harry experimented with the dagger, swinging it repeatedly to test its weight and balance, recalling techniques from his favourite fantasy novels. While unfamiliar with combat, he tried out different grips and strikes, eager to learn how to wield the weapon with finesse.
It wasn't just about having fun. He remembered from the gate's description that there was a phenomenon in which the dungeon cycled between two states, one of which rendered offensive magic useless. Now that he had a weapon, he only needed to learn some offensive magic.
A sudden thud broke Harry's concentration, causing him to whirl around, alert for danger. The sound of shuffling came from behind the counter, sending his heart racing in anticipation of a potential threat. Harry gripped the dagger firmly, bracing himself for a confrontation. He had mistakenly assumed he was alone in the room.
His tension dissipated as a strange creature emerged—a sentient book with cartoonish limbs that gave it a whimsical appearance. The book's cover, which was worn and embossed with cryptic symbols, served as both its body and face. This facade was dominated by two enormous eyes that radiated inexplicable warmth, surprising Harry with their depth of expression.
"Hello, little one," Harry said, smiling. "Aren't you just the most adorable thing?"
The book's cover snapped open, and Harry's brief smile vanished as a deadly storm of razor-sharp pages exploded towards him. He hurled himself to the side, tucking into a roll as the projectiles whistled past, slamming into the wall with a metallic screech.
"Lesson learned!" Harry gasped, scrambling to his feet. "Never underestimate anything in this blasted dungeon!"
He barely finished speaking before diving to the side again to avoid the next volley of projectiles.
Harry realised he needed to strike back and gripped his dagger in a reverse hold, the blade pointing downward. He feinted left and sprang forward, driving the weapon into the book's spine as it slammed shut. The impact jolted through his arm like he'd struck solid steel. Before he could respond, the monster's arm swung up, landing a brutal uppercut to the stomach that sent him sprawling.
Wheezing, Harry rolled to his knees, one arm wrapped protectively around his midsection. The pain was intense, but he hadn't suffered any critical damage. Gritting his teeth, he jumped up, determined to land a solid hit before the book could launch another attack. This time, he targeted the eyes adorning the front cover.
Harry dodged a wild swing from the book, then retaliated with a lightning-fast slash that left a deep furrow across the cover. The book reeled back, and Harry capitalised with a vicious strike that ripped a large chunk of the monster's "face."
The book let out an unearthly shriek, and the cover flew open, about to unleash another deadly paper storm. Harry, anticipating the move, lunged forward and clamped both hands on the top edge of the book, using his momentum to slam it face-down onto the floor.
The erupting pages struck the ground harmlessly, but the impact reverberated through the book, causing damage. Paper strewn across the floor in a chaotic fan, as the monster twitched before finally going still. The monstrous tome and its pages shimmered and vanished.
Harry gasped for air and dropped to his knees. The fight, despite being brief, had been intense, made all the more so because he had never fought with his life on the line before. As the adrenaline ebbed, he found himself mentally replaying the intense battle, analysing his missteps and identifying crucial areas for improvement in future encounters.
"I forgot to scan it," Harry realised, berating himself for the oversight.
After dying, the monster left behind a five-pound note and a page. Pleased at the unexpected reward, he pocketed the money and reached for the page. To his surprise, it dissolved at his touch, merging into his forehead.
A rush of information flooded his mind, and it took a moment for Harry to process and comprehend it all. The knowledge he gained taught him how to navigate the menus and use the various commands available to him.
"Well, that makes things a bit clearer," Harry muttered. "Main Menu."
A new window materialised, distinct from the others he'd seen. It featured an image of himself dressed in ill-fitting jeans and a baggy sweatshirt. Harry's lips tightened as he studied the picture. The boy staring back at him looked every bit like a poor, abused orphan.
A separate menu to the left of the image displayed all of the notifications he had received, with his status prominently displayed on the right. The dungeon information was listed beneath his status. Most importantly, it displayed the current phase: the weapon phase, which could change at any moment.
At the top of the menu, several tabs offered access to various system functions. For the time being, he decided to review his status.

Harry took his time going through his status. Despite the fact that he couldn't fully understand it due to a lack of information, he got the general idea. He also perused the other menus, but not for long. When he had more information, he could look into them further.
Harry was particularly interested in the database among the menu options. It served as a comprehensive repository for his current and future knowledge, containing a wealth of data such as bestiary entries, maps, locations, individual biographies, and any insights he gained about the system itself. He was certain he would return to it frequently in the future.
Returning to the treasure chest, Harry retrieved three scrolls, their purpose immediately apparent from the inscription etched into them. These appraisal scrolls were consumable items that granted him the ability to examine items in greater detail.
He thought about using one on the dagger, but then changed his mind. They might be a precious resource and he felt the dagger was pretty ordinary, so it would be a waste. Instead, he decided to use the scroll on the next item he retrieved from the chest.
It was a pair of stylised glasses, a far cry from his own shabby pair. He placed one of the appraisal scrolls on the ground and unrolled it, before setting the glasses on it. Immediately, information began appearing on it.

[ Gamer's HUD] [Twenty-twenty Vision] [Empty] [Empty].
"Brilliant!" Harry grinned.
The user interface was certainly useful, but he was more excited by the twenty-twenty vision enchantment. Harry removed his old, outdated glasses and put on the Gamer's Specs. The world around him instantly became a stunning display of crystal-clear detail. His days of squinting through poor quality lenses were over; everything was now sharp and vibrant, a sight to behold.
With a simple touch to the side of the lens, the heads-up display appeared, displaying vital information about his condition as well as a detailed mini-map. The map was zoomed in on the room he was in, displaying it with remarkable detail. He zoomed out with a mental command, but the rest of the dungeon was obscured by shadows, waiting to be discovered and explored.
After gathering the chest's contents, Harry scoured the room for anything useful. He found a shabby backpack beneath a dusty counter. It was not much, but it would be useful for freeing his hands. He shoved the remaining appraisal scrolls inside and slipped it on.
Taking a deep breath to steel his nerves, Harry pushed open the door. He stepped into a corridor flanked by towering bookcases. Remembering the dungeon's maze-like layout, he knew he'd have to explore thoroughly to find the exit. Time was of the essence; the looming phase shift threatened to render his weapon useless. He needed offensive magic, and fast.
Harry's footsteps echoed in the eerie silence as he crept down the dim corridor. His magelight illuminated a small radius, but beyond that, darkness reigned. Every shadow seemed to hide potential dangers, setting Harry's heart racing.
He paused when he reached a four-way intersection, unsure which way to go. His minimap provided no guidance, so he chose to head west at random.
A sudden noise froze Harry in place. Before he could react, a searing pain shot through his leg. Something had leapt from the shadows, sinking its teeth into his flesh. Glancing down in shock, Harry found his limb trapped in the jaws of a monstrous book.
A notification materialised on his HUD
Chomper: Sentient Book Species, Level 3.
"Bloody hell!"
So, what do you think? Harry is going to be spending six chapters in the dungeon before returning to the real world, so it will be a little slow for some people.
