The first sign that something is wrong is when Ruby wakes to the sound of someone frantically calling her name.
Well, actually, that's not quite right. The first hint of things not being right is when she wakes up on the bathroom floor with no idea how she ended up there. Maybe whoever is trying to get her attention will know. Ruby reluctantly pries her heavy eyelids open, squinting against the bright lights.
"Oh good, you're awake," Yang says. Her sister is crouched next to Ruby on the floor, looking very worried. "Are you okay?"
That's a good question. "What happened?" she asks, trying to think past how foggy her head feels. The words come out a little strange. Ruby's mouth is dry and it feels like her tongue doesn't want to cooperate with her brain. "What's going on?"
"We were hoping you could tell us that," Yang replies, her frown deepening. Ruby is vaguely aware of the rest of their team hovering in the doorway. "There was a loud thud and we came in here to find you out cold on the floor. Did you hit your head or something?"
"I don't think I hit my head," Ruby tells her sister. There's a dull ache in the back of her head, but it feels like just a normal headache. She tries once again to try to piece together whatever chain of events led her here. "I was getting ready?" Ruby suggests uncertainly. "I don't really remember passing out."
As her head starts to clear a bit, she feels the tiled floor digging into her back. Ruby makes a face and attempts to push herself up off the floor, only to be stopped by a hand on her shoulder. "Whoa there, sis, let's take it easy. We don't want you getting up too fast and fainting again."
Footsteps in the hall announce Weiss' return. (Ruby hadn't even noticed that she'd left.) "I grabbed a glass of water."
"Let's get you sitting up," Yang says, her voice unusually quiet and gentle. She slowly helps pull Ruby up off the floor until she's leaning against the wall next to the sink. It's embarrassing that even that small change in position leaves her feeling a bit dizzy.
Weiss hands her the glass of water. "Thanks," Ruby tells her, sipping at it gratefully. The cool water helps her feel a bit steadier. "Really, guys, I'm fine," she says after a long pause. "I guess I was just tired or something."
"Right, because randomly passing out isn't anything to worry about." Weiss doesn't look convinced.
"Ruby." Blake's voice is soft, but when Ruby meets her eyes, her gaze is piercing. It feels like she's looking right through her. Ruby has to force herself not to look away. "You haven't been sleeping much lately, have you."
