The Weeping Princess
Funeral bells rang from the church in front of the cemetery where a crowd gathered to mourn the loss of two of New York's most beloved members of the upper class. A woman wearing mourning clothes stood in front of their graves with a somber look. She had cried for days after hearing the news that her parents had been killed in a carriage accident but found that even as their caskets were lowered, she didn't have any tears to shed. The man whose arm was around her shifted as he lowered his head to whisper in her ear.
"You have nothing to worry about my dear, I will be your family from now on. You can put your trust in me, and I will give you all that you could ever dream of. This was my promise to your father when I asked him for permission to marry you".
He squeezed her tight and rested his head on hers. Anju could feel him smirk into her hair. It disgusted her, but she could not react. Not here. Not when everyone was watching.
"Isn't it nice to see a husband consoling his wife so tenderly after such an unfortunate tragedy, Momo"?
"Yes, I knew Mr. Aizen was smitten with her since their courting days, but I didn't realize it was to this extent. I heard he paid for the funeral in its entirety and wrote a personal eulogy about the late Mr. and Mrs. Yugetsu for the papers himself since he didn't want Mrs. Aizen to be further stressed after receiving such terrible news. He even wanted to send her to their winter home in the countryside, so she could rest in a more peaceful environment, but she insisted that she wanted to stay and show everyone that she was alright since her disappearance would surely affect the moral of those working at the Yugetsu soup kitchens and recently opened free clinic".
"How admirable of her. May I ask where you came by this information. Nanao"? Momo curiously looked to the woman next to her.
"My uncle told me. He came across it while attending a recent social tea party. He's done business with Mr. Aizen before and said he can be rather cold and ruthless in his dealings. But I suppose when it comes to his wife, he shows a more sensitive nature". Momo looked ahead watching as Mr. and Mrs. Aizen walked from the graves to stand in front of the gathered crowd to make a concluding speech.
"I see". Feeling a tinge of jealousy. Momo bit her inner lip.
Removing his arm from Anju's waist when they stopped, Sosuke gave her a comforting look before addressing the crowd.
"Everyone. I'd like to thank you all for coming today. I'm sure the late Mr. and Mrs. Yugetsu are appreciative to see how many of their dearest friends and acquaintances have attended this ceremony to honor their lives. I'd now like to call attention to something they held near and dear to their hearts. Their hopes for the future. Before Mr. Yugetsu took over his father's corporation, he always wondered how the common man would be impacted by his decisions when the day came for him to become head of the Yugetsu Corporation. As I'm sure most of you know, the world of business can cause one to make difficult decisions that are ultimately for the best interests of the company". Sosuke's eyes looked around the crowd seeing more than half nod and chuckle knowing exactly how cutthroat the world of business could be.
Seeing the many smiles and nods completely unaware of what Sosuke was really saying, Anju clenched her fist but soon relaxed it. Willing herself to save if for when she was in the privacy of her room.
"He realized that something was lacking, and that something was charity. Mr. and Mrs. Yugetsu made it their life's mission to ensure that those who couldn't afford to eat were given a warm meal up to three times a day through their soup kitchens deposited in our state's most impoverished areas. My wife has been working hard to continue their legacy by taking over the management of the Yugetsu soup kitchens. In addition, she has recently opened a free clinic in their memory to provide good health to those who can't afford it. That is why in the spirit of good health, we ask that you not send personal gifts as we navigate this difficult time, but instead donate anything you can so that we may continue to carry out the life's work of the forever charitable Mr. and Mrs. Yugetsu. Thank you.
"I thought that was a nice funeral service. What did you think, Momo"? Nanao turned to her friend. Both were walking from the cemetery to the front of the church where they'd wait for their carriages to pick them up.
"Huh? Oh, I thought it was nice as well. I thought Mr. Aizen's speech was respectful to Mr. and Mrs. Yugetsu's memories, and everyone seemed to like it. I hope to one day meet a man as sensitive and kind as him. What about you, Nanao? Shouldn't you be looking into marriage prospects? Our debuts into society are coming up soon".
"Hah, with an uncle like mine. I won't be getting married anytime soon. The man doesn't take my desire for marriage seriously you see, so I fear that I will become a spinster soon". Chuckling, Nanao pushed up her glasses. In truth, she had no serious thoughts of marriage and actually didn't mind it if she stayed single for the rest of her life. It didn't matter to her all that much really, but that didn't mean she couldn't dream about it on occasion after she read a romance novel or admire the relationships of those around her.
"Oh, my carriage is here. I'll invite you for tea so we can chat at a later time. Goodbye, Nanao". Momo bid farewell as she was helped into the carriage by a footman. Now waving from the window. Nanao waved back as the carriage rode away.
Now that she was alone, Nanao scanned the crowd looking for her uncle, but happened to see Mr. and Mrs. Aizen waiting for their carriage instead. Deciding now was an appropriate time, she walked over to offer her personal condolences.
"Good afternoon, Mr. Aizen, I hope I'm not intruding on anything".
"Not at all Miss Ise. I hope you are well". He gave her a charming smile.
"I am, thank you. I wanted to offer my heartfelt condolences to you and Mrs. Aizen. Miss Hinamori and I both enjoyed your speech. It was a reminded to be grateful for all we have and to share our good fortune with others.".
"I'm glad to hear that Miss Ise. My wife and I appreciate your sentiments. Tell your uncle we both said "hello". I'll have to invite him for a drink of the scotch he sent me. I was quite surprised that he would send me such a beautiful bottle. I admit I wasn't sure about the flavor profile, but it was surprisingly delicious by itself. It'd best describe the flavor as unique".
"Yes, ha ha. My uncle can have peculiar tastes when it comes to some of the alcohols in his collection. The bottle he sent you is made once every ten years in small batches, so it's quite special. I'll tell him that you liked it". Turning from the top hat wearing man, Nanao landed her indigo eyes on Mrs. Aizen's blue ones.
"My uncle and I will be donating to your free clinic, Mrs. Aizen. When we read about it in the papers, we were delighted to see how well it's been progressing. My uncle said he's sure your parents would be proud". Nano smiled hoping her words were comforting. She wasn't good friends with Mrs. Aizen in the way she was with Momo, but they were still on good terms and occasionally sat next to each other at tea parties and mingled in similar circles at social events.
Giving the bespectacled woman before her an appreciative smile, Anju thanked her for her kind words. "Yes, thank you, Miss Ise. I appreciate hearing such things. Sometimes I think I'm not doing enough, but my husband assures me that doing all that I can is more than enough". Feeling an arm snake around her waist. She looked up to see her husband smiling down at her. Smiling back, she fought the urge to grit her teeth.
"It's true is it not, dear? The soup kitchens and now free clinic are ensuring that even the common people are able to operate at their best so that they can be productive members of society. I can think of nothing more selfless than to do something that benefits everyone. I'm sure your parents are glad that they have such a selfless daughter".
Noticing a flicker of something in the woman's blue eyes as she continued to look at her husband. Nanao tried not to stare lest she be called out for impropriety.
"It looks like our carriage is here. It was nice talking to you Miss Ise. I do hope you and Mr. Kyoraku are able to come by the estate for dinner some time".
"Yes, thank you Mr. Aizen, and goodbye Mrs. Aizen".
"Good, bye Miss Ise". Anju bid her farewell before being helped into the carriage by her husband.
Watching as Mr. Aizen got into the carriage, she saw him smile at her from the window before turning his attention back to his wife to tell her something.
With a click of his tongue and the pull of the reigns their coachman signaled for the white horse to walk.
"Maybe it wouldn't be too bad to take my search for a marriage prospect more seriously". Nanao blushed. Only to have it replaced with annoyance when she heard her uncle call out to her.
"Hey, it's Nanao. When did you get here? I'm just kidding, a ha ha ha". The curly haired man waved before resuming his conversation with his life-long friend Mr. Ukitake.
"Please tell me he didn't drink during the ceremony. We were at a funeral for God's sakes! Show some respect".
Turning back around, Nanao waited for their shared carriage to arrive.
"Well, what did you think of the funeral my dear"? Sosuke inquired. His smile inviting of conversation.
Anju, kept her head down refusing to look at him. They were alone now, so she didn't need to put on airs for him.
"In time you'll see that this was the best decision. It's regrettable that it had to come to this, I admit, but let's try to work past this. The sooner you accept what happened, the sooner we can be happy together". Taking Anju's hands into his own, he lightly squeezed them.
Seeing no reaction, he put her hands back in her lap and sat back in his seat. Looking out the window, he saw a shop he owned full of customers, a reminder of how far he had come. "Perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way". He turned his head forward to look at the woman sitting across from him.
"So long as you perform your duties for the Aizen Estate and put on the countenance of a wife who is in love with her husband when we are out in public. It does not matter how long you take to move past this. These things take time after all, but when you do, I think you'll find that what's waiting for you is a life most could only hope for. I meant it when I promised your father that I'd take care of you and give you all that you could ever dream of".
"Did that include murdering my parents"? Anju bit out.
"Murder? You are mistaken my dear. They died in a carriage accident. Remember? We were on our honeymoon when we got a telegram informing us of the unfortunate news from your god father, so we had to return early to settle matters of their estate lest your uncle found a way to take what should rightfully be yours".
Reaching out a hand, Sosuke put two fingers under Anju's chin lifting her cold gaze to his. "It's much better to be here with me living in relative comfort than it is to be forced out onto the streets by someone who is supposed to be your own flesh and blood. Don't you agree"? He cupped her cheek rubbing a thumb over her cheek.
Watching Anju turn from him, he chuckled.
"You've seen how those who live in the slums react whenever they get a bowl of soup and bread at the Yugetsu soup kitchens. They're just grateful to have sustenance. They can't even fathom living a life beyond that. It's quite sad really. You know, when my great aunt heard that your uncle was preparing to contest your father's will, she wanted me to annul our marriage right away since she feared that your uncle would take everything and leave you penniless, but I couldn't bring myself to do that and hired the best lawyers I could to ensure that he had no right to anything your father had worked so hard for. In other words. If it wasn't for me, you'd have been out on the streets along with the rest of the poor eating soup and bread at the Yugetsu soup kitchens. The same kitchens you yourself have spent many years volunteering for".
Having heard enough, Anju decided she'd end this game. Turning he head to face her husband, she put her hand over the one he had cupping her cheek and smiled brightly at him. "Thank you, Sosuke".
Removing his hand, Sosuke nodded, satisfied with Anju's effort. "There's no need to thank me, dear. I was just trying to show you how much worse your situation could be. A golden cage is better than being let loose to fend for yourself in the wild is it not"?
"A cage is still a cage. It doesn't matter what it looks like".
"That me be true, but it doesn't negate the fact that you are well cared for and cherished deeply by me".
Not wanting to argue furhter, Anju settled for looking out the carriage's window seeing the light pitter patter of rain start to pelt the window.
"My father used to say that every time it rained, the heavens were weeping about something. Some cultures even believe that rain is a sign of new beginnings. I think both meanings are appropriate for today. What do you think, dear"?
Ignoring the obvious attempt to get a rise out of her since she was not acting the way Sosuke wanted her to, Anju continued to stare out the window watching as civilians on the streets ducked for cover to shield themselves from the unexpected rain. The roads had become muddy and the clouds where grey, but something else happened. The sun peeked out from the cloud cover as if to say it wasn't going to let the gloomy fog and cold rain stop it from shining. Anju wondered if it was a sign that everything would be alright, or if it was a coincidence. Not one to believe in such things, she found herself hoping it was the former.
(Two years later)
"Gin, did you do what I asked you to do"? Sosuke signed another document that needed his signature. While he still managed the Aizen Company, he also helped his wife manage Yugetsu Corporation due to her poor constitution. While this caused his workload to increase, he didn't mind it one bit. So long as Anju was able to recuperate and improve her health that was all that mattered to him, and he couldn't deny that the benefits of taking up the position of temporary head of the Yugetsu Corporation were beneficial for his own personal endeavors.
"Yes, they should be arriving sometime tomorrow. I think you'll like this next batch. They don't worry about the details and do anything to get the job done so long as they are paid".
"Good, and their assassination skills"?
"Acceptable. They worked efficiently together and left no trace. If I hadn't witnessed the deed myself, I would've assumed the poor sap fell down the stairs just like the constable did".
"Thank you. That'll be all for tonight, Gin. I'll be retiring to my room shortly". Picking up another document, Sosuke read it over before putting it on the side for later. He needed to review a past document to make sure the amounts disclosed were correct before he signed it.
"Oh, are you planning to have a night visit with Mrs. Aizen tonight"? Gin's grin stretched all the way to his narrowed eyes.
"Is that any of your business"? Sosuke kept his eyes focused on the new document he was reading. Gin always had a habit of distracting him while he was working.
"No, I suppose not. It's just I worry about her sometimes. Women of affluence are quite delicate you know. It's been two years since that unfortunate accident, yet she acts like nothing ever happened except for that occasional spaced out look she gets. The poor dear". Gin's grin now had a hint of glee remembering when Mr. Aizen told Anju the truth about her parent's deaths. It was like he was revealing a secret that everyone but her knew. Her reaction was every bit as amusing to watch as he thought it'd be.
"Thank you for your concern, Gin, but we both know how my great aunt is. She won't leave me alone until an heir is produced". Sosuke answered dryly as he dipped his pen in ink, to sign the document.
"You know, I think having a mini Mr. Aizen running around her would be just the cutest thing. Don't you think so too. sir"? Hoping to get a reaction this time, Gin was disappointed to see there wasn't one.
"…You are dismissed, Gin".
"Of course, Mr. Aizen. See you in the morning". The silver-haired man waved shutting the office door behind him.
"Down that corridor is where Mr. Aizen's office is. You'll report there before and after every mission for debriefing and instructions. Over there is the corridor that leads to the kitchen and servants eating area. You can take your meals with the rest of the staff there. Breakfast is at seven, lunch is at elven, and dinner is at six. Any questions"? Gin turned around to see how everyone was fairing. Not seeing any raised hands or hearing any questions, he continued giving them a tour of the estate.
Walking by a long window along the hallway wall, he saw a silver-haired woman in a light blue dress and cap tending to the rose garden while a maid stood behind her holding a basket for her to put the freshly cut blooms in. Stopping at the next window, which had a better view of her, he motioned for the men behind him to come closer.
"Over here, everyone. I have something to show you". With the men gathered, Gin pointed a long slender finger to the window. "You see that woman over there? That's Mr. Aizen's wife, and you are to protect her with your very lives should the situation call for it. You are to address her appropriately and be respectful towards her at all times". Gin looked to each man grinning like he was about to reveal something that they could probably guess on their own. Cupping a hand to his mouth his voice became secretive. "And just a little word of advice between us men". Standing up straight, he held out his index finger wagging it from side to side before crossing his arms. "Don't make any passes at her. If you do Mr. Aizen will not hesitate to… well, I dare not say the details out loud. I'll give you a hint though. The last errand boy who sent his lustful gaze her way is still tied to a cement block at the bottom of the wharf since the constable still hasn't found his body. He was somehow able to find his eye balls though". Gin's playful grin turned sinister at the reveal. "And don't get me started on what the punishment looks like for those who displease Mr. Aizen. Did you know that in the underground it's said that Mr. Aizen is the reason why there are so many unmarked graves in New York? I thought that was an interesting tidbit. Of course, Mr. Aizen wasn't as interested in it as I was". He placed a hand to his chest.
"Yeah, yeah. We've heard it all before. As I said during our interview, so long as we get paid, we'll do just about anything". A man with blue hair crossed his arms over his chest.
"Oh my, we'll have to work on that attitude of yours, Mr. Jagerjaquez. Mr. Aizen won't be as tolerant of it as I am. For he is unaccustomed to the mannerisms of those from the slums like you and I are".
"…"
Getting no response, Gin looked at his wristwatch checking the time.
"Moving on. Mr. Aizen is expecting all of you in his office when he gets back from his meeting and will be sending each of you on your very first assignments afterwards. Isn't that exciting? If you go down that hallway and turn right, you'll find the servant's quarters. Your rooms have been prepared and are ready for use. That being said, Mr. Aizen does not permit anyone to bring in women of the night or drink uncontrollably on the premises. If you feel the need to do so, you can go to the docks and find suitable arrangements for yourself".
Watching as Gin started walking ahead with his men following at varying paces, Grimmjow looked out the window trying to get a glimpse of the silver-haired woman's face.
"Curious, boss"? Di Roy tried to catch a peek too.
"Something like that". Grimmjow kept looking, but the woman wouldn't turn around.
Hearing Gin's voice fade as he walked further away, Di Roy tapped him on the shoulder. "Boss, we should go before we're caught dawdling".
Giving the woman one last look. He and Di Roy quickened their pace to catch up to the rest of the group
Outside in the rose garden, Anju felt like someone had been watching her. Turning around to look in the first-floor windows, she didn't see anyone.
"Is something wrong, Mrs. Aizen"? The maid also looked to the first floor windows wondering what she was looking at.
"It's nothing. Thank you for holding the roses, Mila Rose. I will give you some so you and your friends can brighten up your quarters". Anju took off her cap wiping her handkerchief over her sweaty brow.
"That would be lovely, Mrs."
"If there are no more matters to discuss, I will adjourn the meeting".
"Just a moment, Sosuke. The board of directors and I wanted to ask how Mrs. Yugetsu- I mean Mrs. Aizen is doing, and if she will return to her position as head of Yugetsu Corporation"? Mr. Kyoraku smiled pretending that he hadn't intentionally used Anju's maiden name.
"Shunsui". Mr. Ukitake whispered to the man next to him. When Shunsui had told him that he had something up his sleeves to get under Mr. Aizen's skin today, he had advised him to reconsider since that would cause unnecessary tension in the boardroom.
"As I've said before Mr. Kyoraku. Mrs. Aizen has been dealing with a series of health issues and she does not have the strong constitution to handle business matters at this time".
"But she has energy to go to social events"? Shunsui quipped.
"When she is well, yes. My wife still needs more time to recuperate and her health is more important than anything business, so I ask that you be patient with her while she's recovering, and continue to put your trust in me until she is well enough to take back her position. I've increased our shareholders by five percent and have exceeded our projected revenue for the past several months have I not"?
"Yes, you have". Kisuke nodded. "We're just worried is all. Is she truly so unwell that she can't stop by the office for a bit even if it's just to say "hi"? It's been a while since I've seen my godchild. I feel I should be offering her more support during her time of poor health".
"I'm sorry, Mr. Urahara, but matters of business are too stressful for her right now. Ever since her parents died in that unfortunate accident, she hasn't been the same. I've called all manner of doctors, but they've all told me the same thing. That she is suffering from an ailment of the mind, and she needs to focus on things that aren't too stimulating while she recovers. That's why I appreciate you giving her the space she needs and not bothering her with things I am more than capable of handling in her stead. It seems the only time I see the old Anju is when she's at social events or concerning herself with matters of charity. Rest assured, gentlemen, that my wife is being well taken care of and when she is in better health, I will bring her by the office so you may see how she is doing for yourselves". Sosuke gave the board of directors an good faith smile.
"When you put it like that, Mr. Aizen. Forgive us for our impatience. It's just ever since Anju was a little girl, she'd sit in on meetings with her mother and whenever we adjourned for break, I'd hear Mrs. Yugetsu ask her what she would do if she were in her father's position. Some of the things she'd say were quite brilliant for her age, but that was to be expected considering who her parents were. Now that she's temporarily stepped down from her position for nearly a year however, I find myself missing that brilliance, so I'd like you to look over past meeting notes from when Ichirou was head of the corporation and see if you can bring a smidgen of that brilliance to our future meetings". Kisuke bore his green orbs into brown.
"I understand Mr. Urahara". Sosuke slightly narrowed his eyes back.
"Lighten up, Mr. Aizen. I was just joking. Well, not really". Kisuke jovially waved his packet of notes in Sosuke's direction. Putting the packet down he folded his hands in front of him. "You're only thirty, and the transition from managing one company to a corporation with several can take some time to get the hang of. The fact we haven't asked for your removal since you came on board is proof that we think you're capable, but if you don't bring something fresh soon, we fear our competitors will close the gap we've worked so hard to create, so just think over the suggestions we've given you and don't hesitate to reach out if you need further assistance. We may not act like it at times, but we're all a team here".
Seeing that carefree look on Mr. Urahara's face pissed Sosuke off. He swore that when he got the rest of the board on his side, he'd vote him out, but this was to be nothing more than a private fantasy for Kisuke Urahara was well known in the business and social circles of New York, and since he also happened to be Anju's godfather, he couldn't get rid of this man no matter how much he wanted to. Too many eyes were on him and according to his spies, he was well protected thanks to his connection with the head of the Shihoin family who specialized in security and protection. At one point he had thought about hiring them for himself but found their need to follow the law and stick to the rules annoying. No matter. He had his own way of doing things and Mr. Urahara being on the board made no difference when it came down to it for he'd accomplish his goals regardless.
Acting like he was happy to hear that Kisuke thought he was capable, Sosuke softened his features and smiled at the older man. "Forgive me, I sometimes find myself being too ambitious. It's just that I highly admired Mr. Yugetsu, and I want to do everything I can to carry on his legacy. That's why I hope you all will continue to provide necessary feedback and advice, so that I may grow and continue to better assist Anju from the business side of things".
"Thatta boy, Sosuke. You know, you and me should go get a drink sometime. I know a pub that serves a nice fish and chips platter. Their mashed peas are quite good". Shunsui add a lazy in his direction. If Sosuke didn't know better he'd think the water in the older man's cup had been switched for sake.
"I'll have to postpone your offer, Mr. Kyoraku. My wife is expecting me for lunch. I wouldn't want to disappoint her". He apologetically explained.
"Oh, maybe next time. Guess we'll have to go by ourselves, Jushiro".
"Alright, now that that's settled. Meeting adjourned". Kisuke announced.
"Welcome home, sir". A butler took Sosuke's coat and hat.
"Where is my wife"? Despite having an idea, he refused to acknowledge the carriage that was currently parked in his driveway.
"In the parlor with Mrs. Aizen Sr., sir".
Hearing the name of his great aunt, Sosuke quickly made his way across the foyer hurrying as fast as he could to the parlor. He would not let her poison Anju's mind with her nonsense.
"I saw this in a store when I was in France and I just had to get it for you. I hope you like it, dear". The elderly woman with a pinned grey updo handed Anju a gift-wrapped box.
Although her lips were upturned in a smile, her eyes were zeroed in on the young woman in front of her, looking for any sign of defiance. The bow-topped maltese in her lap panted with its tongue out enjoying the soft fabric it was seated on.
Pulling the white ribbon off the yellow box, Anju took the lid off and removed the tissue paper to see what was inside. Seeing something blue, white, and brown, she picked up the items and held them in front of her to take a closer look. "Oh, it's a baby's sailor outfit with little brown shoes"… She smiled gratefully knowing that Sosuke's great aunt would scold her if she acted as anything less than happy at her attempt to hint that she wanted her to hurry up and continue the Aizen blood line. "How thoughtful of you".
"It's for a boy of course. That's what your first child must be". Sosuke's great aunt. took a sip from the porcelain teacup she had been served tea in by Anju. "Have you been taking the medicine I sent you? I got it especially made for you by a doctor in Japan, Dr. Kurotsuchi. He's supposed to be an expert in many things including fertility, you know".
"Yes, I take it as is prescribed on the packet". Anju nodded her head remembering when she first received the package of smelly tea.
(Flashback)
"What is it, dear"? Sosuke took a bite of his breakfast.
"Um, it looks like your great aunt sent me another package of fertility tea… This one smells worse than the last one. Do you think I should take it"? Anju eyes balked as she read the long list of side effects on the package's back.
"You don't need to subject yourself to that mad woman's antics. Here I'll have a maid dispose of it at once".
(Flashback end)
"I see. I suppose it takes effect for everyone at different rates. My friend's niece is on her third child thanks to this tea. I suppose I just have to be more patient".
Hearing the doors burst open, the bowed maltese jumped out of his owner's lap and ran to the intruder barking at them so they'd know they weren't welcomed.
"Hello, Rutherford. I see you're still not fond of me". He leaned down mildly amused by the dog who treated him like he was a burglar in his own home.
"Welcome home, Sosuke. How was work"? Anju greeted giving him a hug.
"Fine. I-".
"No, no, Anju. A wife should never ask her husband how his day was unprompted. It will further sour his mood if his day did not go as expected. Instead allow him to relax and have a servant fix him a drink so he can unwind. He will be in a more pleasurable mood that way, and only when he tells you about his day are you to listen and provide comfort only". Sosuke's great aunt scolded, taking another sip of tea.
"Great aunt, I'd appreciate it if you would stop telling my wife such nonsense".
"Nonsense? Sosuke Aizen, how dare you speak to me that way. How a lady is to conduct herself is not nonsense. Why, how a woman conducts herself is the very foundation of the home and is how she contributes to her country by raising model citizens and doing the things her husband need not concern himself with while he focuses on his work outside the home". Giving her grandnephew a stern look, she bite her tongue from berating him in his own home. They'd had this conversation several times before. He should understand what's expected of him as sole heir of the Aizen family by now.
Deciding it wasn't worth it to get into with his great aunt, Sosuke decided a change of subject was in order. "Will you be joining us for lunch"?
"Of course. I want to spend more time with the future matriarch of the Aizen family. Let's continue were we left off, dear". Sosuke's great aunt motioned for Anju to sit back down. "You don't need to concern yourself with this conversation, Sosuke, but I will be speaking with you separately later. Rutherford! Come".
Hearing his name, the maltese ran back to the couch and jumped up. This time laying down by the end pillow.
Seeing Anju give him puppy eyes, Sosuke gave her an apologetic smile and walked backwards to the door as he waved good bye to her causing Anju bite her lip to stifle a giggle. Her husband was leaving her to suffer the fate of hearing his great aunt speak about all the ways she's heard of to conceive and remind her of the ways a wife of a member of the Aizen family was expected to conduct herself as at all times.
Exiting the room, Sosuke shut the door behind him. While his great aunt continued to drill what he deemed "nonsense" into Anju's head, he'd be in his office getting acquainted with his new errand boys.
"This is a picture of the person I want dead. Edrad and Nakeem, I expect you both to complete the mission and be back in my office where you will give me a thorough report by the end of tomorrow. You can leave in the morning". Sosuke handed the picture to one of the men.
"Next order of business. Showlong, Yylfordt, and Di Roy, you three will stay behind at the estate and guard it with the rest of security, and Grimmjow". He looked directly at the blue haired man, holding his gaze. "I have a special task for you. Tomorrow my wife and I will be going on an outing. I need you and Starrk to watch from the background for any suspicious activity. Should someone prove to be a threat. Get rid of them. Is everyone clear on what's expected of them"? His gaze shifted between the men in front of him.
"Yes, sir". The men said in unison.
"Good. You are dismissed".
"Sosuke"
"Hmm"? He paused, holding the strings to his silk pajama bottoms in his hands.
"Do you think I'll ever become pregnant"?
"Did my great aunt pressure you during her visit again"? He resumed tying his pant strings and began putting on his night shirt.
"Yes, but that's not why I'm asking. It's been two years since we've been married, and I worry that I may be barren".
Anju had never seriously thought about if she wanted to have children or not. She just assumed it was one of those things that would naturally follow once she got marriage, but after she had volunteered a few times at an orphanage, she found the desire to have children because she truly wanted them and not because it was something that "just happened" slowly implanted itself into her mind.
Now that she seemed to be experiencing fertility issues, however, the societal pressures surrounding her duty as a woman weighed down on her more than it had before she had this problem. It brought about feelings of shame and guilt for not being able to meet an expectation despite it being through no conscious fault of her own.
Feeling a dip on the comforter by her legs, Anju saw Sosuke lean down and felt him cup her face, kissing her lips deeply before pulling away.
"Don't worry about it, dear. It'll happen when it happens. We're both still young and healthy, and if we still don't hear the sound of children running around and filling these halls with laughter in the next few years, we can look into fertility treatments".
Seeing his sincere smile, Anju gave him a smile of her own. "Thank you, Sosuke. So… what did your great aunt talk to you about"? She grinned quirking a brow. "If it's anything like what she spoke to me about, I feel sorry for you".
"What do you mean"?
"Well, when you left, she gave me a book and told me to do everything it said since she ended up not believing that I was drinking that strange smelling fertility tea. Would you like to take a look"? Reaching in her night table, Anju took out a small black book with no title handing it to her husband. Watching him, she bit her lip waited for his reaction.
Not understanding what could be so funny about a book, he opened it and skimmed through several pages before shutting it, looking like he had seen something he shouldn't have.
"I'll have to put it where I put the tea. Should I get rid of the baby clothes as well"?
"Actually, I wanted to keep them. I thought it was one of the nicer gifts I've received from her, and I think it will give me comfort until I can conceive. Sometimes having physical proof of one's goal to look at and feel can make one feel better about not having reached their goal yet. That's a bit of wisdom from my mother".
"I see". Placing a kiss on her cheek, Sosuke gave her hand a gentle squeeze. "In the meantime, don't let that woman get to you. Time is not a concern to me. We'll have a child when we have one, and that's that. There was something I wanted to tell you… Oh, that's right. We have tickets to the matinee showing of Ana Karenina. The head of Haschwalth Konzern, Herr Jugram Haschwalth, will be there with his wife and I'm hoping to make an impression, so I can negotiate a business deal with him". Walking to Anju's dining chair, he grabbed his robe and tied it at the waist.
"Which business are you planning to negotiate for"? Anju sat up straighter against the headboard of her bed. The plush pillow against her back sank in as it accommodated her new position.
"Textiles".
"Oh, that would be a good business to bring overseas. I hope it works out well for you".
"I hope so too. Now get some rest. Don't think I didn't notice that you tried to go a third round tonight. You let that woman influence you too much. Although. I can't say I was displeased with your effort".
"Sosuke"! Anju threw a pillow at him laughing.
"Here you go, mi 'lady".
Taking the silver spoon with medicine from the maid. Anju quickly swallowed and chased it down with a glass of orange juice. Its sickly sweet taste was not something she thought she could ever get used to.
"Thank you, Hallibel". She put the spoon down on her cloth napkin.
Putting the medicine bottle back on the trolley, Hallibel got back in line with the rest of the maids and head butler while she waited for her mistress to finish eating.
"Did you sleep well, my dear"? Sosuke put down the newspaper.
"Yes, and yourself dear husband"?
"I hardly slept a wink. That black book was truly something frightening". He chuckled cutting into his sunny side up eggs. The yolks bleeding over the whites.
"Ha ha. Yes, I don't know what your great aunt was thinking when she gave it to me. Something must've inspired her to increase her efforts to get us to conceive. It's not like we don't put in good effort by ourselves". Anju smiled knowingly taking a bite of toast.
"Before my father passed away, she promised that she'd watch over me and guide me in his stead. I'm the only legitimate heir to the Aizen Estate at this time, so she puts pressure on me to ensure that she keeps her position as the matriarch. It's nothing more. I'm sure she doesn't even care what the child is like so long as they are male and take on the Aizen name".
"I'm so sorry. I had no idea".
"It's alright. I purposefully didn't tell you because it's a sensitive subject matter, and I didn't want you to act differently around her. I think by now, though, you know what's expected of you when you're in her presence". Sosuke wiped his mouth taking a sip of tea.
"Yes, of course".
Continuing to eat breakfast in silence. A flicker of something flitted across Anju's eyes causing her to clench the utensils in her hand tighter. Looking up slowly, she stared across the table at the man in front of her with a blank expression.
Feeling eyes on him, Sosuke looked at Anju from over his newspaper. Seeing that she was looking at him with blank eyes. He smiled. "Is everything alright, dear"?
Hearing his voice, Anju's grip on her silverware loosened, as she seemingly came out of a trance like state.
"Y-yes. I just can't believe that you're my husband sometimes." She smiled hoping she came off as blown away. "I'm very lucky to have you".
"Neither can I. I'm done with the paper now. I'll hand it to you on my way out since I know you like reading about what's going on in the world. I have some important matters to attend to, so I likely won't see you till before we are scheduled to head out".
Standing up, Aizen walked the length of the table leaning down to kiss Anju on her temple and handed her the paper.
"Goodbye, dear".
"Have a good day, Sosuke".
"I will".
"So, you're the newbie? My name's Coyote Starrk". A man with wavy brown hair said in a lazy voice.
"Grimmjow Jagerjaquez". He nodded his head.
"Tie's a little crooked". Starrk motioned to the black tie Grimmjow was given to wear, along with a white dress shirt and black suit, with his index finger. "Here, let me help you. You don't look like you've ever worn one of these".
"Why would I? You don't need to dress fancy on the street that's how you get mugged". Grimmjow felt Stark undo the crooked knot he managed to make with the tie, straightening it out before retying it around his neck.
"Nervous"?
"For what"?
"This is your first time being a personal guard for Mr. Aizen isn't it". Having finished tying the tie, Starrk took a lint roller and rolled it down Grimmjow's arms and back.
"Yeah".
"Then let me give you some advice that Gin may not have told you. While on guard duty we are to be seen and not heard, and the only time it is appropriate to touch Mrs. Aizen is if you are taking her away to safety. My last partner didn't take this advice seriously and had his eyes gouged out on Mr. Aizen's orders... By me". Starrk put the lint roller down. Grabbing a metal tin with pomade he scooped a nickel-sized dollop with the knuckle of his index finger and put it on Grimmjow's palm so he could tousle it through his hair. Handing him a fine tooth comb, Grimmjow began smoothing his hair back with it to look more presentable.
"Is that supposed to scare me"? Grimmjow turned his head in the mirror making sure every hair was in place. Seeing a hair sticking out, he smooth the comb over it rechecking that he got it in the mirror.
"It's supposed to do whatever it's supposed to do. Be aware is all I'm saying. This isn't a job where you get whipped or let go for going against the rules. Unlike the last guy, you have pretty eyes, so I'd hate to have to". Starrk motioned with his index and middle finger at Grimmjow's turquoise orbs that were looking at him in the mirror.
Rolling his eyes, Grimmjow turned away from the mirror having finished styling his hair. "You wish you could touch these beauties. Who's not to say that Mr. Aizen won't order me to take yours"?
Smiling to himself Starrk sighed. "You know? I think we'll get along just fine".
"Thank God it's over. I don't even know what this stupid play was about. Some dumb woman who thought she'd live a magical life with her secret lover? How stupid. Doesn't she know that real life is nothing like the stories where a knight in shining armor rescues the princess? This world is cold and doesn't give a damn, but of course, the boss's wife and every broad in this theater is eating it up thinking it's romantic or some bullshit".
"Fix your face Grimmjow". Starrk whispered from his position on the other side of the entryway to the theater box.
"How can you even see what type of face I'm making when your eyes are closed? I thought you were asleep"? Grimmjow whispered back.
"Just call it intuition. I've been working for Mr. Aizen for years. You and the men you came with aren't the first batch to come from the slums".
The thunderous applause from the audience died down as the theater lights turned back on.
"Well, my, dear. What did you think"?
"I thought the acting was very good, and the story was quite moving even if the subject matter was not my cup of tea. It's a shame that Ana couldn't get a happy ending, but I thought it was realistic".
"How so"? Sosuke got up offering an arm to Anju who took it. No up, she made her way towards the exit of theater box. Her husband walking behind her.
"The world can be extremely unfair. I see it in the eyes of nearly all the people who line up for the soup kitchens, but when I watch them eating the warm soup and bread we offer, and their eyes soften, I feel like I'm temporarily providing them with a bit of warmth in their lives. Seeing this play makes me want to work harder for their sake".
"That's beautiful, dear, but I'm sure the people of the slums already appreciate your efforts".
"Oh, they don't always, but I don't mind. They live a hard life, so it's only natural, but when they see that we really do just want to help, and they finally warm up, and even say "thank you". I feel like I'm doing something my father and mother would be proud of".
"I'm sure they already are. Now let's go get some lunch. We can go to that café we went to last time that you liked".
"So, we really get to order lunch"? Grimmjow stood at the front of the restaurant watching as Mr. Aizen pulled out a chair for Mrs. Aizen at a table in the back.
"Yep, so long as you keep an eye on Mr. and Mrs. Aizen. I'm going to sit at that table". Starrk pointed thumb at a table behind him by the door. "You sit at the bar close to where the boss is sitting. After they finish eating, escort them from behind till they exit the restaurant. We'll follow them while they walk around a bit, then we'll head home, debrief, and if there are no more assignments you can go about your business till you're called on again".
"Sounds good".
"So how was your day"? Di Roy laid on his side propping his elbow on his pillow.
"Boring". The blue-haired man put on his pajama top walking over to the bed next to Di Roy's. "Edrad and Nakeem still aren't back"?
"They are, but Mr. Aizen wasn't kidding when he said he wanted a thorough report. Edrad said the target was one of his lesser competitors, but he still wanted to make sure that it was a clean kill so it couldn't be traced back to him. I gotta say, our new boss is more meticulous than the others were, but that doesn't really matter to me right now. Was she pretty"? A shark tooth grin spread on the blond man's face as he sat up.
"Who? The boss's wife"? Grimmjow smirked at the man's curiosity. "She was alright". He snorted hearing Di Roy make a noise of disappointment.
"Oh, don't do me like that. On their way out to do guard duty this morning, Yylfordt and Showlong got a glimpse of her and told me during lunch that she's a real beauty. Nice too. She introduced herself and asked their names telling them to be careful and dress warmly at night since that's when the fog from the wharf rolls in. Isn't that strange? Since when does the upper class care about their servant's wellbeing"?
"She's probably faking it. At the café we went to, I overheard her talk about some soup kitchens she runs. She's likely pretending to be nice so we'll tell people about her and boost her image. All members of the upper class are the same. Don't fall for it". Getting in bed, Grimmjow put his arms behind his head and stared at the ceiling.
"Alright". Di Roy nodded. "Hey, on our day off do you want to go down by the docks? One of the butlers, Zommari told me if I wanted to save my soul from damnation that I should stay away from such a godless place".
"Why"?
"Why do you think? That's where the bars and prostitutes are".
"Yeah, sure".
"You're dismissed. I'll summon you when I need you. For now, tell everyone that they'll be on security detail inside the estate starting tomorrow morning".
"Yes, sir". Edrad and Nakeem exited the office heading to the servant's quarters. The had a lot to talk about with the rest of the men regarding how their first mission went. In short, it had gone well and the other men they were sent with weren't bad either.
"Well, what do you think? Not bad, right"? Gin stood next to Sosuke behind his desk.
"Not bad at all. I have a feeling this batch may be just what I'm looking for. Has our spy come back from the Urahara Mansion"?
"Not yet. Do you think they got caught"?
"If they don't come back in the next three days, we'll send someone else to check".
"I'll arrange for it to happen. That reminds me. How was the play"?
"It was interesting, but not as interesting as Herr Haschwalth suddenly leaving in the middle of it. I saw one of his servants whisper something in his ear. I don't know what it was, but it looked urgent. I'll have to see if the person we disguised as wait staff for his room knows anything about it when they return".
(Three days later)
"I'm sorry dear, but I received the telegram this morning and must attend to a family matter. It seems my uncle's illness has taken a turn for the worse and my great aunt has called everyone who was mentioned in his will to attend in the event that he passes".
"I understand. I'll be waiting for you when you get back". Wearing a shall to ward off the early morning chill, Anju stood outside with Sosuke next to the carriage he would shortly be leaving in once the servants finished packing his belongings into it. The rest of the servants stood in front the estate behind them, as was custom in order to send off the master of the house.
"Be sure to eat well and take your vitamins. You're already so thin that I can't help but wonder if it's because you feel you must conform to the latest fashion trends".
"I assure you. I'm not on a diet and I have been eating well for a long time now, but for your sake I'll be sure to eat more, so forgive me if I'm the size of a hippo by the time you get back". Anju jested. Finding her husband's concern for her to be endearing if not over the top at times.
"Well, that would be a sight wouldn't it". Sosuke chuckled.
"Sir, the carriage is packed and ready for your departure". Head butler Ulquiorra informed.
"Very well. I'll just be a moment". Giving Anju a peck on the cheek, he ran a thumb over her cheek giving her a look of warmth. "Take care, dear. Send me a telegram if you need anything. I'll come home as soon as it's over". Getting in the carriage, he smiled at her from the window.
"Take care, mi 'lady". Gin bowed mockingly.
Unamused by his antics, Anju pretended like he wasn't there. Chuckling at her refusal to play along, he got into the carriage without further annoying her. If it wasn't so early, she might've indulged him a bit, but she also didn't feel like getting into it with him at the moment for Gin's tongue was like a snake's. If you weren't careful or didn't know how to quip with him, you might find yourself getting devoured. Something several staff members had yet to learn making them targets for his amusement.
As the carriage rode off, everyone waved till the ornamental gates closed. Signaling that the master of the house was now out of the estate.
"Mrs. Aizen's really come around, hasn't she? If it weren't for that occasional spaced out look she gets, I would think she's truly in love with you. I guess time does heal all". Grinning, Gin looked to his boss wanting to hear his take on the matter.
"Heh. Well, I don't know about that, but I'll take that spaced out look over her being despondent".
(Flashback)
"Please eat, dear. I had the servants make this especially for you. You're really going to let their efforts go to waste"? Seated on the edge of Anju's bed, Sosuke held a bowl of soup trying to offer a steaming spoonful of it to the the woman covered head-to-toe in bed sheets. She had refused to come out from them for nearly two weeks this time.
"…"
"Tell me, my love. How long has it been since you've been outside this room? The doctor said fresh air would do you good".
".."
"How about we go to that park that you like. The one with the ducks. Remember? I took you for a boat ride around the lake. You enjoyed our time there didn't you"?
"…"
Seeing that he wasn't getting through to her, Sosuke put the soup spoon back in the bowl, and set it on the nightstand by her bed. It seemed this attempt was a failure as well. Standing up, Sosuke was at a loss for what to do other than to give her, her space. "I have some business to attend to in my office, but I'll come back and check up on you later. Just please try to eat something even if it's one spoonful".
"…"
(Flashback end)
"I remember that. In the end, she came out of her room one day and it was like nothing happened. It was a bit creepy to be honest, but I'd say she's mostly back to her old self. She no longer talks to me the way she used to, but I think that's a good thing. Don' you agree Mr. Aizen"?
"Why yes, Gin. I do" Sosuke smiled. "Girls like Anju are meant to be spoiled and adored not out playing with snakes in the grass".
"Oh my, such harsh words, but it's true is it not"? Gin chuckled. "You're the one who gave me that moniker. "Snake". After you saw me killing one of your spies in an alleyway. The way you looked at me made me think I had you hypnotized or something like one of those charmed snakes we saw during your business trip to India".
"Me, hypnotized? No. It was the other way around, Gin. The look you gave me when I offered payment for your services led me to believe I was the one who had hypnotized you, and why wouldn't you be. It's thanks to me taking you under my wing that you were able to protect that street urchin friend of yours. How's she doing by the way"? A light smirk appeared on Sosuke's lips at having reminded Gin, who really was the one in charge here.
"She's doing fine, Mr. Aizen. Just fine".
"Since Mr. Aizen has an unscheduled event to attend to. Your day off will be rescheduled for when he comes back. In the meantime, you are to focus on being security detail unless Mr. Aizen sends a telegram requesting that any of you are to be sent out on missions".
"Why is a butler giving us orders"? Edrad asked to no one in particular.
"That's no ordinary butler, idiot. That's Aizen's third in command when he and Gin are gone, Ulquiorra. Didn't Gin explain this to you when you first came here"? Nnoitra grinned maliciously at the man with red-tipped hair. If he was lucky, Ulquiorra would get annoyed enough with the newbies that he'd let him kill one. It'd been forever since he was sent on a mission, and the the itch to do something violent was creeping up, but he had been warned enough times by the green-eyed man and even Mr. Aizen himself, to curb this itch while he was inside the estate.
"Must've slipped my mind".
"Oh, I bet. Better not let Mr. Aizen catch you slipping on anything else, or you'll end up getting carved by my blade". Taking out a knife from a leather strap on his thigh, Nnoitra ran his tongue along the edge. Eyes alight at the prospect of using it to carve the man standing next to him.
"Eww". Grimmjow face contorted. Disgusted by the man's actions.
"Enough. Put your knife away, Nnoitra". Ulquiorra gave him a warning look. Subordinate fighting of any kind, unless ordered, was not to be tolerated. Returning his attention to the packet in his hands, Ulquiorra silently read the last of the notes regarding the day's agenda.
Putting the knife back on the strap on this thigh, Nnoitra groaned at having had his fun ruined. "But don't say I didn't warn you boys. I won't hesitate to come after you if ordered to".
"Ahem. Last order of business. Mr. Aizen wants at least one person stationed outside Mrs. Aizen's bedroom for night watch while he is away. I have assigned Grimmjow for this task since you already have experience being Mrs. Aizen's private security".
"Great, I've been assigned babysitting duty". "Understood".
"That concludes all of Mr. Aizen's instructions. You are all dismissed for the time being. Attend to your duties, and report to me as needed".
"Ulquiorra". A maid entered the conference room. "The doctor is here to see Mrs. Aizen".
"Right on time".
"I'm glad to see you are in better health, Mrs. Aizen. I have already given the maid in charge of your medication a refill for your prescription. Be sure you continue to take your vitamins daily and get plenty of fresh air so you can keep your stress levels low". Dr. Yamada put his stethoscope back around his neck having finished his examination. "If that is all. I-".
"There's one more thing doctor. Could you please check"? Anju's blue eyes looked hopeful.
Pausing, Dr. Yamada was momentarily stunned as he stood half-way off the chair he was given to sit on.
"Is everything all right doctor"?
Seeing that his patient was looking at him with a pensive expression wondering if something was wrong. He sat back down, and re-rolled his sleeves past his wrists. "Y-yes. I'll check for you right now, Mrs. Aizen". Calming himself, so she wouldn't pick up on his nervousness, Dr. Yamada gently palpated her abdomen. He could feel her body tense as he felt where her womb would be. Stealing a glance at her face, he saw it too was tensed in anticipation of the prospect of hearing good news this time. "This poor woman".
Removing his hands, he put on a consoling smile as he unrolled his sleeves. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Aizen, but you are not pregnant at this time".
Opening her eyes at the doctor's words, Anju put on an understanding smile. "I see. Thank you for checking Dr. Yamada. I'm sure I just have to be more patient".
"Yes, these things do take time, but so long as you take your vitamins and continue to improve your health. I'm sure it'll happen in no time. If you'll excuse me". Standing up from the chair, Dr. Yamada picked up his medical satchel from the bed, and exited the bedroom closing the door behind him.
"How is she doctor"? Ulquiorra asked standing against the wall in the hall.
"Her health has improved, and she continues to get better".
"Mr. Aizen will be pleased to hear this. Follow me, I'll give you your payment in the foyer". Walking down the hall, Ulquiorra could hear Dr. Yamada's footsteps following behind him.
Taking an envelope with money out of his inner suit pocket, Ulquiorra handed it to the young doctor. "Mr. Aizen thanks you for your hard work, Dr. Yamada". Seeing he appeared to be internally struggling with something, Ulquiorra thought a reminder was in order. "I'm sure your older brother appreciates all that you do Dr. Yamada. Ever since he turned to a life of crime it seems you are his only benefactor since no one is willing to higher him with the history he has. Continue to work hard for the sake of improving Mrs. Aizen's health, and Mr. Aizen may consider hiring him to work at the estate".
"I- about that".
"Is there are problem"? Ulquiorra's voice had a hint of a challenging tone to it. His green eyes promised the use of force if Dr. Yamada decided he would no longer cooperate.
"N-no, not at all. I just wanted to ask that you to give my thanks to Mr. Aizen for putting his trust in me to be Mrs. Aizen's doctor is all. My brother and I appreciate his continued use of my services. I'll be taking my leave now". Dr. Yamada quickly exited through the front door that was held open for him by a butler.
"I may have to find another house doctor. I'll discuss the matter with Mr. Aizen when he gets back".
"Good, lord".
"What is it Mr. Aizen"? Gin stood to the side of the table Sosuke was eating breakfast at. Both men were in his room at his uncle's mansion.
"It appears what Ggio found out while working undercover at that hotel is true. Herr Haschwalth's stock has plummeted due to his cargo ships being lost to a bad storm on the Atlantic. Thank goodness, he got the news during the play otherwise I would've struck a deal with a fallen businessman". Re-reading the news story again, Sosuke made a mental note to check back on the situation. If Herr Haschwalth was willing to accept help from a foreign investor to get back on track it would serve his interests well.
"I see. Well, that's too bad isn't it. Herr Haschwalth has been in business for so long that you'd think he'd understand how unforeseen weather conditions can badly affect logistics. Are you planning to offer aide to him"? Gin grinned looking down at his boss from his standing position as Sosuke neglected his breakfast in favor of speaking about the recent event.
"I haven't decided yet, the situation is still too new to make any offers at this point. I'll let him deal with most of the damage and see how willing he is to let a foreign businessman negotiate a deal to handle the rest. The last bit of any problem is always the trickiest, since not properly handling the issue the first time around can cause it to reappear later down the line and before you know it you're forced to deal with it all over again. I'm sure when I explain it like that Herr Haschwalth will have no problem letting me intervene". Sosuke smirked turning the page of his newspaper. Unsurprisingly, he was reminded of Anju when the next story featured an update on the situation in the west. Another town was experiencing an increase in economic growth due to migrants setting up businesses and the richer ones investing into the town itself making it attractive for visitors to want to spend time and explore the town.
"It looks like the west continues to develop. If Anju were here, she'd want to read about it and make predictions about any businesses mentioned. She must be so lonely in the mansion without me. I'll have to bring her back a gift to make it up to her".
"How thoughtful of you, sir".
"This is the security detail who has been assigned to your night guard while Mr. Aizen is away, Mrs. Aizen. I believe you both have already been acquainted".
"Yes, I briefly met him when he escorted Sosuke and me to the theater with Starrk. It's nice to see you again, Mr. Jagerjaquez". Anju greeted smiling at the blue-haired man.
Grimmjow wasn't sure how someone could smile so brightly at him when he of all people shouldn't be smiled at, let alone even looked at, unless someone wanted trouble. Ignoring the thought, he tried to be as polite as possible to the lady of the house lest Ulquiorra decide they needed to have a little chat on etiquette in the basement. "Nice to see you again, ma'am". He bowed his head.
"Did you come from the slums"? Blue eyes looked him over curiously.
"What"? The question had caught him by surprise.
"I can see a scar peeking from your shirt and the way you speak is that of the lower-class. It's nothing to be ashamed of. I was just curious".
Looking to Ulquiorra, Grimmjow wasn't sure how to answer this. Did Mr. Aizen even want his wife to know that most of the security detail were former criminals or thieves who were recruited by her husband. The green-eyed man offered no instruction. In fact it looked like he was outright ignoring him.
"A ha ha, you don't have to hide your origins from me, Mr. Jagerjaquez". Anju chuckled seeing he wasn't sure how to answer. "I'm well aware what type of people work for my husband. Even Ulquiorra has a past and I'm not bothered one bit by it. He's an excellent protector to me when my husband is gone, but when Sosuke is here, you'd think he's just a regular butler".
"Yeah-I mean. Yes, I've gotten acquainted with the others. We seem to all have a similar background".
Before Grimmjow could say anymore, Ulquiorra cut in. "Thank you for your understanding, Mrs. Aizen. We will leave you to finish your lunch now. Come along, Grimmjow. I have a task for you and several others".
Seeing that Ulquiorra had bowed before leaving, Grimmjow did the same and followed after him. "How demeaning. I shouldn't have to bow to anyone".
When the dinning room door closed, Anju resumed eating. Today's menu was chicken breast with cream sauce, rice, and broccoli. "What an interesting new addition to the Aizen Estate. He looks like the type who can't stand to work for others. If true, I wonder why he's here? Mmm! This is really good. I'll have to give my compliments to the chefs".
It was nighttime at the Aizen Estate and the house continued to wind down as kitchen staff finished washing pots and pans, and other staff members and off-duty security details made their way to the servant's quarters. Those who had an off day scheduled, headed to the docks for some late-night fun or to grab a drink at the bar. It seemed that everyone, except Grimmjow was doing something fun while he was stuck standing guard outside Mrs. Aizen's bedroom.
Looking at his wristwatch, he saw the time was close to ten p.m. He would not be relived till six a.m. when Ulquiorra would dismiss him for breakfast. His only motivation was that he'd get the rest of the day off till he had to be back outside Mrs. Aizen's room again by eight p.m. to do it all over again. It wasn't a bad deal, but doing it alone was boring. He hadn't been alone like this since he was a child wandering the slums because no one was home to watch him, but at least back then he was free to go where ever he pleased. The memory caused him to sigh frustratedly. He hated remembering anything from his childhood even if the memory was neutral or as close to happy as it could get.
"What's that noise? Don't tell me that pampered princess is crying again. Doesn't she know that she's living a life girls in the slums could only dream of? Try living in a one-bedroom apartment with an alcoholic father who gambles his wages, so you're constantly hungry, and he doesn't give a damn if you're in the house while he fucks your mom, so you have to wander the cold streets at night just to get some peace. That's when you'll really have something to cry about. I bet you had your own room with a nice feather stuffed bed, and your mommy and daddy kissed you goodnight telling you what a special little angel you were. Miss weeping princess doesn't know how good she has it".
Crossing his arms over his chest. Grimmjow tried to ignore the muffled sobs he heard coming from inside the room he was guarding but found he couldn't. Roughly twenty minutes later he heard the sobs quiet down and the sound of slippered feet walking across the wooden floor.
Drying her eyes, Anju opened her bedroom door intent on going to the garden fountain for comfort, but was stopped in her endeavor, when she saw the back of her guard standing directly in front of her.
She didn't want to bother him, but she needed to get out of her room for a bit. "Mr. Jagerjaquez? Could you please move? I need to get by".
Turning around, Grimmjow came face to face with the woman. She looked pitiful with puffy eyes, tear stained cheeks, and a red nose, but he wouldn't comment on it. In fact, he'd pretend like he hadn't heard her crying at all let alone that he was annoyed by it the whole time. "Did you need something, ma'am"?
"I just wanted to go out to the garden to get some fresh air for a bit".
"My apologies, but I was told to guard you while you were sleeping and nothing more. You'll make it easier on the both of us if you go back inside your room and wait till morning". Grimmjow waited for a reaction. If she started fussing at him, he wasn't sure he'd be able to keep himself from putting a hand over her mouth and yell at her to "shut up".
"I- you're right". Anju lowered her gaze. "I'm sorry for bothering you while you're on duty. Have a good night, Mr. Jagerjaquez". Shutting the door, she decided to open her window instead and stare out at the garden since going outside was not an option right now.
Once again, alone in the hallway. Grimmjow turned around so that his back was facing the bedroom door again. Crossing his arms over his chest he stared at the wall in front of him.
"Well, that was easy".
