Alpha, Beta, Yet Never an Omega

Chapter 14: Rooftop Waltz – Hushed Voices
/
She dazzled most in black, but tonight the grey in-between led another young bat astray. Not far behind, the fledgling boy wonder caught up; his insatiable need of knowing he was right, driving him along those lines. The ones that blurred, made him feel bad under the city's very beacon.
Under the Batman's hand, should it come crashing down would interrupt their flow. Selina had the boy strung at her hip as he never left her words at the last drop down to another, and another fire escape.
"Old Gotham, then where are you taking us?" He said to her from a glaring distance.
She did not speak as he followed. Playing games as a cat would towards their friend, a dog of man's company. Thankfully, this kitty was a cat person. The notorious feline pulled Damian into her world as she slipped down to find a window on the east side of Gotham. On through it, Damian used caution, until a room lamp went on to break his concentration. In the room was one other woman. She wore a coat for a doctor…but, her skin was bleached. He nearly fell back as Selina caught the boy. "Easy. Bruce is well aware we're working together. Pam? Mind yourself around the boy. He's already begun to sense danger in other ways."
"OTHER." Dami snapped and pulled from her gloved grip. One alpha, maybe a beta and an omega. Quinn.
Isley was…. something of an anchor as she held onto Harleen's shoulder with a tender squeeze of it. "We know some things. The guy who took your brother is a nut job, but he's really doin' more for himself. Bruce had some intel out and back to Gotham. Said he's with Gordo another night in Bludhaven."
"Haven." Dami swallowed. "He's come no closer in finding the one responsible…"
"Blud's a tough crowd." Sighed Harleen as she scratched her blonde dyed hair and waited for Ivy to hand her the clipboard she felt like cosplaying with. "We know a bit too much, thanks to being s part of the birds of prey." She explained to the boy wonder.
"What about Gordon's kid?"
"De facto …. she is out of the group on a mild hiatus, toots." Harleen told the child. "She got taken doing the nasty with –
"CHILDREN, HARLEY."
"I am aware of one selling their body for top secret withheld information. My mother was no accepting to this topic." Damian said coolly to Selina to calm her thoughts a bit. She huffed a sigh, eyes rolling behind her mask. "Fine. They did, it…and Richard was rejected. The second blow was –
"Was what, he is. Why he can't decide to come back or…won't." Ivy frowned.
"Why? The videos the monster…"
Dami stopped, Harleen clearing her throat as she pulled up her pen to look over her notes. "Well, actually. You drove um off. There is such a thing as a false positive possibility of Dickie being…not one but two kinds of type. Ah, sit for this. Come on."
"HE was born a beta, however…Todd said he smelled, Omega on my brother. How can that be??"
"He's a hybrid type. Exhibiting the traits of either, and my only worry…your daddy's is that he's gonna think it's a good thing. If this guy is a real prince goddamn charming…"
"Richard wants to come home."
"He wanted to become something he couldn't. He'd otherwise be tossed out of any office that would have him. Any school. His very culture is built around being something he wasn't prepared for, and…as Harley said." Selina bit her lip. "That soul mate instinct might be what's driving us away."
"Magic is a falsehood. That sort is only a way to "manifest" one's ideal. I won't consider it. Father cannot believe in this reason, it's not valid!"
"Soulmates DO exist." Ivy pulled back her collar of her suit as Damian saw it. A ripple that could have been a scar, a wing. It was…
Harleen moved her hands to do the same and exposed part of her breast. "See? Not all folklore, kiddo."
Damian shut his eyes, turning for the window. "Father took away his freedom, yet this life allowed that! This ranking, it's…."
"WRONG." Selina sighed. "It was built up by Alphas in power. That is why, whatever that person who has him now….they are a very strong minded and even more so, dangerous Alpha. From what we know, they don't have any identity or address up. The Bat is on his perch, standing guard outside of his city."
"Blud is lawless. We should be there, helping."
"Kiddo…" Harleen pouted sympathetically to the child. "Your daddy has us to work around his schedule. Gordo too. It's gonna be fine! You'll see. I'm great with wearing masks. As a vigilante, well knock um dead!"
"I'm not worried about that. I know you will defend this city beside my family. I am worried about…how much can be done with so little Intel. I…I could have this all done in much quicker a time. I should be at his side, his Robin. For now…"
"We won't let the big bat down." Smiled Selina with a Cheshire grin. "You'll see. It will all work out in its own time."
"Bed time, Damian?"
Ivy made the boy blush by the question. "This patrol was shorter than most. So, I suppose it must be then."
"Leave that trip to me, ladies."
"Night birds, right. Currently on watch for any late owls –
Ivy threw a palm over Harley's lips. They didn't need to spill on that topic. The bat would tan all four of their hides upon his return. "Have a safe trip!" Pam nervously grinned back, waving as Dami and his midnight baby sitter took themselves all the way back to the outside of Wayne's block.

She landed with the grace of a dancer onto the road; the gates as large as Selina could picture looking in…
"Are you sure you'll be alright? Alfred is there." She stated, seeing the child pause as he huddled inside his hooded cloak for warmth. "Selina…well, if father is at any time delayed…as true heir and man of the house…would you, think to join us? Fir just one night, I suppose. So, I won't have my siblings –
"Ah." She chuckled softly and warm as his own mother might have. "I'd be honored if you'd have to take advantage of my time. Cats only have nine lives, yet I can spare a dozen more to see this happen. I hope, he returns as well." She smiled before moving quietly away from those gates. "Tell Alfred if I do, to save that tart recipe we both loved so much. I can't seem to replicate it if I'd tried."
/
(So, they used to be together but Selina wasn't ok with Bruce acting as cold as he is to her because of her type. She is actually a Beta, which made it awkward when he had a fling with Barbara. Selina broke it off on good terms, yet not until later and she still cares for the family like one of their own caretakers. She was very close with Dick and Jason, Tim has his skepticism around her, yet this is to be expected. Damian sees good in her through his father's memories of the woman, now that she gave up crime in this to act as a bird of prey. I'm going with it. In some way, she wishes Bruce would tell her than he cares, not because of her societal role, yet through their passions instead to do better.)

Dick got his suit on order from all the parts Slade had provided in his own vision. The thing wasn't bulky and he was worried about how the fabric would hug him too well. Like a glove, it felt as if grooming wasn't too farfetched.
"This is the suit to your interview." Slade pulled out a fresh and dry-cleaning bag that towered up as he held it. "I think you'll pass the interview process. You already took into consideration your grade point average. That mouth should be some example to your brand new character. Nightwing, correct?"
"Only after I'm in. You just have to play the fool here." Dick muttered as he looked over his new I.D card. "Ryan O'Hara…" He recited, the card in hand. "Hair color; brown. Eye color, green. Height; five foot five. Nice."
"You didn't even know that your measure had changed?"
"Bruce discouraged us wasting time once we had what we needed. The next physical…." Dick trailed off. "Moving on."
"Agreed. To the Nightwing suit and its, additional supports."
"Right." Dick wanted a distraction just as badly as Slade wanted to head out on their first real patrol. They'd need to boost the kid up in his new suits – both. As a cop applying and of course, as for the test…
"I'd be a beta. They don't need me, right?"
"Wrong. You'd be an omega, filing papers. I can get you in faster if you let me work as I normally can with their kind."
"Police, the corrupt ones only." Dick grunted. "How many know you, since…" He didn't continue as Slade spoke. "Those that knew before coming here. Yes. They have connections inside the building and to force that information off to them, it would secure our stay. My secrecy is under another alias. They don't know who I really am."
"You…double crossed, some double crossers."
"That I did, like you're doing by hiding FROM the law, THROUGH me." Slade smirked, making Dick duck his head from the other man. "As an…Onega, you've got a plan, right?"
"A third identity, fourth." Slade rubbed his chin, the words flowing naturally by. "You need to be Nightwing, but at the same time, not Dick Grayson or even Ryan. Someone else has to take his face."
"You…want me to hold down a…." Dick blinked. "You want him to reveal his identity. Slade, that's-
"Incredibly forwards for a hero, bit you won't be one of them." He tutted, lying the suit onto the bed as Dick reached out to catch onto it. "No, no. You will have to catch their eye, becoming their real hero. A super star under the mask. You won't have anyone you know, you won't even have a real face to give away. And should anyone try to step on our plans to mold you into a beacon, for starters."
Slade's eye narrowed aside did when he made threats, a threat towards any that would mug, sock or drill the kid under his watch. Dick was his catch. His problem to see to.
"I know you'll be after me on those late night struts, but please. Don't be so….you know, like yourself-
"I thought about that. You're right, though." Slade tapped a finger to his arm as he went to see what the little bird had planned for his down time today. "I decided on a stand in. You'll meet on que though; if I let you two go at it, you may make me jealous to not be in his position."
Dick's hairs rose as he turned to back into Slade's bulk. The man was right there, caging him. Standing as a guard to the prince in his tower. "I…what do you mean by, "go at it? We're just setting a scene. You're the one who should be worried you'll be caught by Nightwing."
"Maybe I should." Slade backed off and picked up his phone. "Maybe, you'd like to hear just what they want from you, little vigilante."

Dingy, dark. The light never touched this place where pigeons hovered. Parties never cease, drugs and booze scented the clouds. A shadow hung back to watch the bonfires as he set up his arm, a ring setting off a distraction as he sighed. Picking at his arm to open the connection, the face of his employer with a mask to share, graced the anti hero's nightmares once more.
"On a job, D."
~ This won't be long. Midnighter? Meet, Grayson. You'll be standing in fir his first duel in the city. We had that discussion about, your arrangement.~
"I know, the stuff you promised would happen. I want immunity. If they catch me, pin it on some other bad guy."
~ What? You both can't be serious! That's not even possible. Who are you? I'm supposed to take you down, and I won't stand it if this goes –
~ Careful, partner. You would not want to lose a valuable asset to our plans. He's building an identity. There are no heroes with his….qualifications.~ Slade said, the anti hero grumbling over the arm as the bonfires below had vanished. Night was over, he grunted. "So? We tussle, cops come. Press comes. He gets credit, I get away. Phantom thief 1 – 0 -1."
~ He'd be forging your security and my silence would continue to keep the gears moving within Blud's precinct. Town hall could lavish him with privilege, while we work. And, none if this gets out. Gotham included.~
"Ya' said it, already." Shrugged MN as he got bored and pulled out a cig from his pack. "So, what's the time we got this to go down? The kid has training? Can he face a few flash grenades? Does he know what I do?"
~ We'll make it a challenge.~
MN nodded, a grin to his cheeky face that only showed his mouth, an upturned smirk. "Goodie. Bring him out here. We can test the mettle on your partner. Kay, DS?"
Slade nodded, before the screen went to fade to black. "Awesome. I have some stamina left." MN stretched as he searched the rooftop. His cig between his lips as he puffed it out, a cloud over what was left of the view. Just a few rats and a baby crying from the window below.
Scarce. MN took off, hoping he did have as much energy to school this wannabe imposter.

"Why did you do all if that? It wasn't necessary " Dick frowned to the adult. "I could meet now-
"That's the point. So. Then, go. Get dressed." Slade tossed the Nightwing suit at the teen, his eyes staring down at this newest enigma. "Do I use Grayson to greet him?"
"That is up to what you think would be better. I did that because as Grayson when none if the press are around, you can freely speak and use names you'll both recognize. I would not recommend doing so during a fight, or in a location with too many cameras."
"So, because we're only meeting now. It's like a bad deal. A contract. I'm not a criminal."
"Batman sees his Selina, you should have the same rights. Like with me."
Dick thought about it, Selina cared for Bruce because of their history, yet feared that he was too caught up in pleasing others to keep his status. She hated and loved him at the same time, yet…it was upsetting to them both.
Slade cared to use Dick in some way. He could and would. Dick was using Slade to keep Bruce from doing anything drastic that would send him to the nuthouse or to be castrated.
Dick wanted to be a Beta. Technically, he still was, yet why did he ask or ever consider wanting to be a useless omega? Was Slade trying to have him break that ceiling by pretending?
If so, it could work. He'd be someone else. Get attention and do real work. He'd…be better than Bruce Wayne and throw aside of the prejudices of Beta and Omega laws to fix them for good. Maybe, to change the world.
"You're thinking too big, too far along. Patience." Slade said it with the demeanor he had during Richard's apprenticeship. That brought goosebumps to the situation far too quickly as he pulled open the bathroom door and shoved the man out to wait. Taking his head to peer back, top off and only his shoulder lightly bared pink and tan, the teen huffed. "No, you need to learn boundaries. I'm not a kid, not yours anyway. Patience, Slade. Like you said." That look in Slade's eye to him, left a great big grin as soon as he shut it in Slade's face.
He knew there was only respect, but that were partners. It went both ways now. He wasn't teaching Dick, he was housing him, building a new him. Granted ideas of a future without? He'd pass on waking up to a snoring alpha while stuck in a choke - hold before six a.m.
/
So, Dick is meeting his very newest enemy and ally, Midnighter. Slade set them up as Midnighter will be his stand in so Slade cam get a better picture of the fame he's expecting Dick to earn by donning the costume, and then? We'll see where this goes. To clarify:
