The Doctor cheered quietly as he landed the TARDIS on silent in the tight squeeze in River's cell at Stormcage. It was her first night, the least they could do was go and see how she was doing.
"You sound so proud of yourself for making that." Thea laughed lightly as she sat on the captain chair, amused as she watched him.
"Hey, I'd like see you do better." He pointed at her.
"I have."
He pointed at her, debating to say something when the doors opened and River walked in, her eyes instantly falling on the low cut metallic dress hanging up.
"The dress is a little daring…" She remarked, walking up to the console.
"Yup, so I went for this instead." The Doctor nodded to the white tuxedo he had put on for the trip.
"But then, if it's between that dress and what she's wearing." River smirked at Thea, the girl standing up in outrage.
"What's wrong with this dress?" She demanded, hands on her hips.
The Doctor had picked the dresses for them both to wear for the night, he had claimed that he didn't want either of them to put on anything scandalous, despite she had never worn anything of the sort, scandalous dresses seemed to be River's go too.
Considering the Doctor had picked this dress out for her, she did quite like it.
It was a simple strappy dress, reaching her knees in a midnight blue with a sheer overlay to her ankles, decorated with silver stars, with a high neckline and flared sleeves, with simple black strap flats on her feet. Her hair was up in a high ponytail, held together with a silver scrunchie.
"Nothing." The Doctor told her, "You look lovely."
"You're only saying that because you picked it out." She countered, turning to River, "Is this actually a thing parents do, dress their kids no matter the age?"
"Oi, quit your whining." The Doctor huffed.
River sniggered at the pair, shaking her head, "Are we going out?"
"Your parents are asleep."
"How's Stormcage?" Thea wondered.
"I'm on the first night of 12,000 consecutive life sentences," River shrugged, "kind of early to say. Where are we going?"
"Calderon Beta."
"Boring planet of the chip shops," the Doctor remarked, "but…there is a 400 foot tree growing out of a cliff top on the north side of a mountain in the middle of the sea. And, if you take the lift to the top and look up at exactly 12 minutes past midnight on the 21st of September 2360, you can see more stars in one sky than at any other moment in the history of the Universe."
"It's like daylight only...magic." Thea smiled.
"I'd call it a date," River smirked at her, "if it wasn't for the old man tagging alone." She jerked her head in the Doctors direction.
"Oi, enough of the old." He pointed between them.
Thea just laughed, "We've got 10 minutes, get dressed."
"Oh that's so close to the perfect sentence." River teased.
Thea scoffed, "you're not my type."
"Oh, you have a type?" River asked her, folding her arms, "and what's that then? A loyal puppy who wouldn't question you. Are you sure you don't fancy psychopaths?"
Thea stuck her tongue out at her when the Doctor cut in, "That's quite enough of that," he looked between them. He didn't even know what to think about that. Sometimes they came off as flirting with each other and then next they were constantly insulting each other. "Did you bring the diary?" He asked River.
"It's a diary?" River held the book up.
"It is now, because River from now on, there are rules…"
"Oh," she pouted, "you've gone all strict."
"I know, right." Thea sighed heavily, "Spoils all our fun."
"River," the Doctor cut in sternly, "the three of us, it's all in the wrong order, we never meet in sequence. You put everything in the diary so we know where we are."
"Put what in the diary? Sweetie I'm in the highest security prison in all of the known Universe."
"River Song could walk in and out of that prison like the walls aren't there." Thea remarked.
"I'm River Song."
"Then what's the issue?" She crossed her arms, flopping back in the captains' chair, "take the first right, second left, just past the helter-skelter and you'll find the wardrobe, because that dress is..." Her gaze lingered on the monstrosity, "ghastly."
River nodded and headed off down the corridor.
"The only way anyone will wear that dress is because they lost a bet." She remarked.
Thea looked over at the doors, hearing a thump, almost startled at the noise as a sound of gunshots followed. The Doctor instantly ran to the doors, throwing them open as another River, slightly older, ran in.
"River!" The Doctor exclaimed.
"I knew you'd come back here, you nostalgic idiots." River gasped, "Hold me!" And promptly fainted, leaving him no choice but to catch her.
"River!" The Doctor called in alarm, lowering her to the floor, "River! River! River?" He tapped her cheek to try and wake her up, "Are you ok?" And proceeded to check on her, trying everything except mouth to mouth CPR, "Talk to me…ok, um…uh…breath, breathe, come on." He looked back at Thea, seeing she was still in the chair, "You could help you know, get a med kit!"
"She's only holding her breath." Thea told him, amused as she walked over.
River snapped her eyes open, glaring, "Spoil sport." She huffed.
"Are you both trying to give me hearts attack?" The Doctor looked between them. "What are you doing here?" He asked her, moving back over to the console, "Who's shooting at you?"
"Oh just a few Sontarans." River waved him off as she brushed off her dress, "Chased me halfway across the galaxy. I probably shouldn't have asked them if they were on a hen night."
"Were they?" Thea wondered.
"Never got an answer. They started chasing me after I asked."
"River you can't do things like that!" The Doctor chastised.
"Or what? You've already had me banged up in jail for 5 years. What else are you gonna do? Spank me?"
"You are not my daughter."
"Hold on," River cut in, catching sight of the dress hanging up, "have you brought someone else here?" She looked at them, annoyed, "Does anyone agree to wear that dress? Where is she?" She turned and stormed off.
The Doctor rubbed his head, "River think it through…"
"This happened the last time we were here. You brought someone else!"
"No, we didn't." Thea shook her head.
"Yes you did! I heard you talking to her!"
"It's the same night!"
The younger River stepped into the room, holding a selection of dresses, "were you talking to someone?"
"No, just Thea," The Doctor replied.
The younger River eyed them a moment before turning away and the older River entered again, "Were you talking to someone?!"
"Just dad." Thea answered this time.
River eyed her a moment before heading off down the corridor. The Doctor lowered his head, no idea how a simple night with River had ended like this and they hadn't even left the TARDIS yet.
"The universe can't handle this many River's in one place." Thea groaned.
The Doctor nodded his agreement when the doors opened and another River entered, this one wearing the metallic dress. "You nostalgic idiots..." She grinned, "You just can't keep away can you…" she trailed off seeing the dress, "Why have you brought another one of these? Who else is here?"
"River do you mind checking the bulb?" Thea asked her, anything for an excuse to not have three River's in the TARDIS at once. "I'm too short and last time it blew in dad's face."
"The bulb?" She raised her eyebrows but headed back out to check.
"Too many River's." Thea moaned.
"Too right." The Doctor agreed.
The second River appeared at the top of the stairs, "Who are you talking to?!"
"You," the Doctor turned and walked up the stairs to her, "I'm talking to you. Back to Stormcage Dr. Song." He flashed his sonic over the woman's Vortex Manipulator.
"Oh, at least give me a lift. You know what this thing does to my hair!"
"Absolutely nothing!" Thea laughed as River disappeared in a crackle of energy.
The third River stepped back inside, "The light's fine, I don't know what you're talking about…"
"Riv, no!" Another voice called, and a young woman with blonde hair in a side braid dressed in long green dress ran in after her, "Thea said it's the wrong..." She trailed, seeing the Doctor and Thea staring at her with wide eyes. Both for very different reasons.
"Jenny?" The Doctor breathed, staring eyes wide at the young woman before them, standing with the older River.
The woman gave a sheepish grin, "hi, dad?"
"Dad?" Thea cried, blinking, looking between the two. That woman was certainly not a future regeneration of herself. Like she would ever be blonde! "what? Jenny? Huh? Dad?"
"Oh, hurry up!" Thea voice called from outside the TARDIS and an older Thea appeared between the two, wearing a black velvet dress, "Oh." She nudged the blonde besides her, "Good job, twerp, I told you to stop River."
"Twerp?" Thea frowned. "I'm confused."
"Yeah, I really was." The older Thea agreed.
"Two Theas!" River gasped, if anything to cut in from the awkward silence surrounding them, "The mind races, does it not?"
"We should go." The older Thea said quietly.
Jenny winced, "Did I just change the timeline?"
"No, its fine, you two head back. I'll catch up in a moment."
"They're taking me to the Singing Towers of Darillium!" River called as she and Jenny headed off, "they've been promising for ages!"
The younger Thea looked between the Doctor and her future self, deciding on who to speak to for answers and settling on herself seeing the Doctor was gaping at the doors, frozen in shock, "who?"
"She's alive..." The Doctor breathed, unable to get his head around that.
"Still confused." The younger Thea cut in.
The older self laughed, shaking her head, "Now I see why everyone loves surprising a pyschic. That's a funny face."
"Darillium." The Doctor let out a breath, recalling what that River had said, about their little trip out, "The first time we met her at the Library, when she…"
"Died." Both girls finished for him.
"She said the last time she saw us was at Darillium…is that now?"
The older Thea gave a sad smile, "spoilers..." She sighed, "Good luck tonight."
"You too." The Doctor whispered.
The first time he had met River in the library, he had looked right through her, and then she had died for him. Died for him, to ensure he had a future, a future where he found Thea.
He closed his eyes that just made him feel even worse than actually being there.
"I suppose I can offer one little spoilers." She remarked, leaning against the corner of the doorway.
"Should you?" He managed a small smile.
"Well, if you don't want it." She smirked, turning to leave when her younger self shouted.
"No, we want to know!" Thea cried.
She laughed at herself, "Make sure you spend Christmas with the family." Her eyes shone with mischief, "there's a nice surprise waiting." With that, she turned and headed off for her own night out.
"Oh!" The first River gasped as she came down stairs, still in her casual clothes, just catching sight of the second Thea leaving, "there's two of you! The mind races!"
"Well, come on you," the Doctor grinned at her, "let's go and see the stars!"
"But I haven't changed!" She frowned.
"And you never will." Thea smiled softly at her.
"What was the other you doing here?"
"Spoilers."
River smirked, "I like that word."
"I thought you might." The Doctor remarked.
"Oh you lot and your secrets, you'll be the death of me." She joked, walking past, not seeing the look of hearts break on either of their faces as the Doctor pulled Thea closer.
"Everybody knows that everybody dies." Thea murmured as the Doctor rested his chin on her head, offering the small comfort he could, both having that they knew how the woman's life ended.
"River!" Thea called over to her, "what does the name Jenny mean to you?"
