Brighton Heywood
District 1 Female
46 HG
The final cannon reverberated in Brighton Heywood's ears as Mira went limp under her fists.
The trumpets echoed throughout the arena, allowed by the words she had dreamed of hearing her whole life, the words that elevated her from a tribute to a victor, but all she heard was Lucas's last words to her, when she had turned on him in the finale.
"You're right. I was a fool to trust you."
Lucas's last words before Brighton caved his skull in were confirmation that she was who everyone said she was.
Brighton looked down at her swollen hands. They throbbed painfully and were swelling up from the microfractures that formed after her gauntlets were ripped off and she was forced to go bare knuckled.
They were stained with blood and brain matter.
Brighton turned to Lucas's corpse and gagged. His once handsome face was now unrecognizable.
"You're right. I was a fool to trust you."
Brighton had warned him not to trust her. She had told him that he was a fool.
Why didn't he listen? Why?
"You're right. I was a fool to trust you."
Brighton choked back a sob. She could have saved Lucas for last. She could have fought her former allies alongside him and then fought him for the crown.
But she hadn't. She had thrown the first punch.
She was being logical. She didn't want to hesitate when the time came…
She was such a hypocrite.
"You're right. I was a fool to trust you."
Brighton dropped to her knees as hot tears threatened to spill from her eyes.
"You're right. I was a fool to trust you."
She looked down at her hands and instead of her own, saw the hands of a killer.
The hands of a monster.
"You're right. I was a fool to trust you."
Brighton screamed.
"It was the logical thing to do. He would have… He would have simply gotten in the way. It was easier this way… At least, that's what I told myself."
xii. hands of a killer
