A lot seems to be going on back at the ship. At the same time, things were going on back on the island. Kari and Davis continued to try and survive on it. There's still been no sign of anything rescue. There's really no telling how long it will be until they are rescued. Kari was hoping it would be soon so that she can see her friends and family again. She remained on the shore and kept looking for something, but there was nothing out there.
"Still nothing..." Kari sighed. "I'm starting to wonder if we'll ever really get off this island." Kari was starting to lose doubt about them actually being rescued, but it's only been a couple days. However, Kari is using this time to think about some things. This could be her chance to actually talk to Davis because she can't seem to figure him out. There are times he seems to be acting like the Davis she remembers, but there are times he isn't acting like that at all. "Davis, what's going with you? Why won't you just talk to me?"
"Did you say something?" Kari got a little spooked when she heard that voice. She turned around and saw Davis standing there with a stick.
"What are you doing?" Kari questioned.
"I'm going to use this as a spear and try to catch some fish that we can cook over a fire." Davis claimed.
"You don't really have to do that. We still have enough food to last us for a while." Kari said.
"Have to do something to pass the time. Just wait. I'm going to catch us some good fish with this." Davis said. He made several attempts to spear some fish in an attempt to catch them while Kari just sat on the shore. She just watched him constantly strike the water, but each attempt only ended in failure. He was at it for a while, but got nothing.
"Davis, give it up. You're not going to catch any fish like that." Kari said. "They're not going to come near you."
"I can get it." Davis said as he kept trying.
"Well, I'm going to look around the island." Kari said as she got up. "I'm going to keep searching around for some fresh water. There must be some on this island if there's so many plants around here." Tired of having to watch this, she leaves Davis to do his "fishing" while she went to do something productive. 'That seems more like the Davis I know, but how long will he stay?' She just went back in the forest. When she was gone, Davis just impaled the water in frustration.
"Why is it things never work when it comes to her?" Davis questioned.
...
Kari
Kari looked around the island to see if there was anything around there that could help them. She wasn't finding much of anything, but she kept searching.
"There has to be some drinkable water somewhere on this island." Kari said. As she tried to figure that out, she could hear something moving through the plants behind her. "Davis? Is that you?" She thought it had to be him because there's no one else, but he isn't coming out. "Davis, quit trying to scare me." Kari turned to where that sound was, but she didn't see him anywhere. Still, she just felt like there was something there. She moved back carefully because she was getting a bad feeling about this, but she wasn't seeing where she was going. Then, she screamed as she felt herself fall back and hit the ground. She was stunned for a moment, but was able to move. She rolled over and was going to push herself off the ground, but then she found what she was looking for. She spotted a small stream of water flowing right through the ground. "Water!"
"Kari!" Davis called as he hurried to her as fast as he could. "I heard you scream! Are you okay?!"
"Yeah. I just tripped over a root." Kari said. "Look what I found." She pointed to the water. "It might be a small channel, but it looks like it's water."
"Let me see." Davis said as he took a quick taste. "Yeah! That is drinkable!"
"Perfect. At least now we have a good source of water." Kari said. "By the way, what was the big idea trying to scare me like that?"
"What are you talking about? I was in the ocean failing to catch fish." Davis questioned. That had Kari a little worried. If it wasn't Davis moving around in there, what was? "Kari, I'm sure it was just some wild animal or something."
"Yeah... I guess you're right." Kari said as she just brushed the whole thing aside.
...
Later
Davis and Kari went back to their cave and just hung around there and kept their eyes open for help, but there was still no sign of anything. They might have this whole island to themselves, but there's only so much they can do.
"You know the worst part about being stuck on an island?" Davis complained as he sat against the rock wall.
"I thought it was being stuck on an island." Kari said.
"It's boring around here." Davis said. "What are we suppose to do until someone comes to rescue us? There's only so much we can do around here."
"I'm sure we can keep ourselves entertained." Kari said. "Since we don't know how long we're going to be here, we'll have to just figure out how to do that."
"I can think of a few ideas to do, but I can't." Davis mumbled.
"What did you say?" Kari questioned.
"Nothing." Davis sighed.
"Come on. Cheer up." Kari said. "It's not like you to be so down in the dumps. We both know people are looking for us. You're usually the one trying to be optimistic, so where is that optimism now?" Davis didn't even bother to answer. He's just so bored. "Come on, Davis. Do I have to shake it out of you?" She said as she actually shook him around.
"What did you do that for?" Davis said.
"I told you I would." Kari said as she tried shaking him again.
"Trust me, you don't want to do that." Davis said.
"You said you wanted to pass the time, so you might as well do whatever it is you want to do." Kari said.
"You asked for it." Davis said as he started to wrestle with her. Kari couldn't stop herself from laughing as the two of them wrestled around with each other until Davis had her pinned down. The two of them couldn't stop laughing with amusement until they realized how closes their faces were and were real close to a kiss. Davis wanted so much to close the distance between them right then and there, but he pulled away and got off her instead. "Sorry. I wasn't going for that..."
"It's fine." Kari said as she sat up. Then, she saw that it felt like she was retreating from her once again. "Davis, you don't have to keep avoiding me. You and I are going to be stuck on this island together, so why does it seem like when we get close, you try to avoid me?"
"I'm not avoiding you." Davis said.
"It certainly doesn't feel like that." Kari said. "What happened to you, Davis? What happened to the Davis I remember? The Davis I knew always seemed full of life, and was always trying to get closer to me. You haven't been acting like the Davis I know. Even before we got on this island, even before we got on the ship, you haven't been yourself lately. It has me worried."
"Kari, people grow and change. I'm not that same little kid I was." Davis said.
"True. I do think you've grown and mature, but you just don't seem as happy." Kari said. "You're working on becoming a ramen cook, and I can tell you've been working hard, but you haven't been smiling as much as you usually do. You know you can talk to me."
"Kari, please. Will you just drop it? Why does it matter to you?" Davis questioned.
"Because I'm worried about you." Kari said. "I've been worried about you for a long time. After all the times you've helped me, can't you let me help you?"
"You're... You're actually worried? You actually want to help me?" Davis said as he was feeling a bit bad.
"Of course. How long have we been friends? How long have we've known each other?" Kari said.
"I... I thought that it didn't mean so much to you." Davis admitted as he sat back down.
"Huh? What are you talking about?" Kari said. "Do I really need a reason to help a friend? Do I need a reason to care?"
"Well... I don't know, Kari. Somewhere along the way, I thought our friendship didn't mean much to you." Davis said. "When I became a digidestined and met the others, it began to feel like you and I were getting distant. You and I have been friends for so long. Think of all the times you and I have had together. It just began to feel like it didn't matter as much to you anymore."
"Is that really how I made you feel?" Kari questioned as she had no idea. "Of course they meant something to me, Davis. Besides, it didn't change that much. There was that time you saved me form Monochromon, and when you suggested we go look for Gatomon's tail ring. I just didn't realize I was making you feel so left out. I guess I just never realized how much you were really there for me."
"Well, it's like that old saying. You don't know what you have until you don't have it." Davis said.
"I think you mean you don't know what you have until it's gone." Kari said. "Is that what's been going on with you? Since we're both young adults and going on to living our own lives, do you think we're getting further apart? Davis, nothing is going change the fact that we're friends." That did make Davis feel a little better. At least he knows that he'll have Kari as a friend regardless, but he can't help but wonder if that will stay whatever the future holds. "And here I thought it was all because you didn't like me and T.K. being together."
"Uh... Well..." Davis stuttered. He figured he should say it because maybe he can finally have some closure.
"I'm glad I was wrong. I always had figured you did have a crush on me, and I used to get you to be have, but I'm glad that's behind us." Kari said. That's right when she put her own foot in her mouth. When she said that, Davis was quite surprised.
"Wait. What? What did you just say?" Davis questioned. "You... You knew all along I had a crush on you, but you used it to get me to behave? What exactly does that mean?"
"Well... I..." Kari wasn't sure what to say but tried. "I suspected you did back when we were kids, but there were times I didn't like how you were acting. So, I may have used your feelings to try and get you to go along with things. For example, when we all tried to get Cody out of that underwater..." "Kari!" Davis shouted as he sounded mad.
"You knew I had a crush on you the whole time, and you've been playing with it all this time?!" Davis said as he shot himself up and was pretty mad. "I can't believe this! You were playing with my feelings the whole time?!"
"I wouldn't put it like that exactly." Kari said.
"How would you put it then?!" Davis said, but Kari had no answer. "I can't believe this! I saw you like an angel, but you were playing with my feelings and made me look like an idiot all this time?!"
"Some would argue that you do that on your own." Kari laughed, but Davis wasn't finding any of this amusing. "Davis, this was all back when we were kids." She said as she got up.
"And instead of just talking me about it and telling me you just don't feel the same, you tormented me." Davis said. "I've known you since were kids, but I can't believe your one of those girls. One of those...heartless manipulators that don't care about the other person's feelings and just plays them to get what they want or for their own amusement!"
"Excuse me?!" Kari said as she was a bit offended by that. "That is a little uncalled for. It wasn't like that at all. The worst I really did was try to make you a little jealous when I went to New York with T.K."
"You did what?!" Davis said as that felt like the worse thing to him. "You were trying to make me jealous, and it was with that...blonde male bimbo when you knew I had issues with it!"
"Davis, there's no reason to call T.K. that." Kari said as she was getting mad. It's one thing to offend her like this, but she won't have him insult T.K. for no reason.
"Oh, I'm sorry I insulted your partner in crime." Davis said. "I suppose now it makes sense why you went and forgot about me when Mr. Perfect came back in your life. You went and forgot about me so you could hang with him. Oh, wait! I just realized that you might have been using him like you've been playing me! I was jealous, but now I feel sorry for him."
"I can't believe you would say that to me!" Kari said. "You really think I would do that?!"
"I don't know what to think because I never thought you would be like that, but you apparently are!" Davis claimed. "Now it wouldn't surprise me that you only would go out with him just to mess with me some more!"
"I'm not dating T.K. for that!" Kari argued. "I also didn't forget you when T.K. joined our class! He was an old friend like you were, and just because I'm friends with him didn't mean you were less important to me."
"Sure seemed like that to me after some time." Davis said.
"What is wrong with you? I wanted you to start acting like yourself again, but not like this. I thought you were grew and mature, but now you're acting like you did all those years ago: stubborn, foolish, and obnoxious!" Kari claimed with Davis unable to take it anymore.
"You want to know what's been bothering me?! You want to know what's been bothering me all this time?!" Davis argued. "You! You are what's been bothering me all this time! You were actually, right, Kari! I was bothered this whole time about you and T.K. dating! Do you know why?! It's because those feelings never when away! I still had that crush on you!" Kari was shocked to hear that. "They never went away! If anything, they grew stronger all the years! Do you know why that was?! When we first met, you were so kind and nice to me! Before I met the others, you were really the only friend I had! That's why our friendship meant so much to me! It meant to me more than you clearly realized, but I guess you were too busy playing your little games to notice! That's why I didn't want to feel like I was losing you! You meant so much to me! Now, it sounds like it all meant nothing to you! I was just your little toy! This whole time you were just torturing me!"
"I wasn't torturing you. I... I..." Kari stuttered as she felt like she was losing ground in this argument.
"Well, you did! It hurt more than you think! Do you have any idea what it's like to see the girl you care so much about with the guy you were jealous of?!" Davis said. "Especially since people love your little story together, but I was just as eligible! I've been friends with you just as long, so I had just as much of a chance as he did! Do you have any idea any of that felt?! No, because that would have to mean you have a heart! I thought you had the biggest one there was, but I guess I was wrong! Let me tell you one other thing! I tried to get over it so that I wouldn't have to constantly deal with it, but I couldn't! I've tried, but I couldn't! I knew I had to, especially when you told me that I should get with Mina back on the boat! At least she knew about my problems and actually tried to help because she actually cared about how I felt! However, these feelings never went away! No matter how much I wanted them to, they never did! Bottom line, you made me feel all of this, Kari, and now I learned that you never really cared! Well, that should actually make things easier. After hearing all of this, I think getting over you will be easier, so you won't have your favorite toy to play with anymore." Kari wasn't sure what to say to all of that. "I can't even look at you right now." He said as he was still plenty mad and marched away. "Oh! One more thing! I actually did hook-up with Mina, and she felt more like a woman than you are!" He stormed off after that.
"Fine! Go! After we get off this island, I don't care to ever see you again!" Kari called as she took off in the opposite direction. The water around here was cool and settled before, but now those two might need cold water to help calm down. Speaking of which, as the water around here was getting restless and heated, the water back on the ship was getting heated as well.
