Stefan was wandering around the Career Fair waiting for Damon to show up. Spending the night here wouldn't have been his first choice, in fact since the spell between him and Elena had been muted, he'd been regretting enrolling in the High School at all. Still, he'd made his bed and he'd have to lie in it, at least for as long as they remained in Mystic Falls. Maggie and Damon were of the opinion that they needed to blend in as much as possible and since he'd stupidly told Caroline he was seventeen, now eighteen since he's birthday, that included things like high school and Career Fairs.

At the moment he was just wondering around waiting for Damon to show up. Damon was the one who'd told him to come tonight, another dead body and another box of vervain he'd promised to hand over to the Sheriff as soon as possible. As soon as possible, being here tonight at the school during the Careers Fair that Damon was now officially late for. He was wandering around the room geared towards jobs in the medical field when Elena came up to him. They hadn't really spoken since he'd told her about vampires, but on the plus side no-one had come for their heads, so she'd definitely kept her word about not telling anyone. Still, he was kind of surprised that she had approached him.

"I'm guessing you're not here to plan the path for your future."

"Damons idea, he's meeting the Sheriff here to give her some more vervain."

"The stuff that burns," She glanced around and lowered her voice, "That burns you guys, and stops you compelling anyone. He's giving that to the Sheriff?"

"Yeah. Zach used to supply her. Damon's taken over the role since we moved into town."

"Isn't that kind of a big risk for you guys?"

He made a so-so move with his head.

"A calculated one. She's unlikely to suspect us of being vampires when we're the ones giving her vervain and Damon doesn't want rogue vampires in town anymore than she does. It draws too much attention."

Elena didn't respond, moving over to another table and picking up a pamphlet.

"You know I wanted to be a doctor before everything happened, but, uh, then I couldn't, 'cause…"

"The blood."

"Yeah. I've dabbled in a bunch of different things, though."

"Didn't love anything enough to stick to it?"

"No, I…I loved it all. I just… I had to move on before anybody could notice that I wasn't getting any older."

"How long before that would happen?"

"Few years, usually. Sometimes shorter."

"And you always left?"

"I didn't have a choice."

Elena nodded and moved on to the next table, she was glancing over another pamphlet when Jenna entered the room and walked over to them.

"Hide me." She said jokingly.

"What's going on?" Elena asked.

"The scum Fell has landed."

"Logans here."

Surprise, shock, realisation. That was the exact order of emotions and thoughts that went through Stefan's head at Elena's words.

"Wait, Logan Fell?" He asked.

Jenna nodded. Without saying anything to either of them Stefan strode out into the hallway and spotted Logan talking to some students. He looked over and spotted Stefan watching him, the mocking wave and knowing look in Logan's eyes made his heart sink. He knew what Stefan was and Damon was late, something had to have happened. Stefan looked around hoping to see whichever agent had been following him tonight, they didn't always stay with in eyesight though, especially at events like this, where there were crowds of people who had no knowledge of the supernatural. Whichever agent was on him tonight was probably patrolling the outside of the school or the like, which meant it was him and Logan and an entire school full of innocent people.

Elena walked out of the classroom and stood next to him.

"Stefan what's going on?"

Logan began approaching and Jenna joined them in the hallway preventing Stefan from answering Elena's question.

"Jenna, are you dodging me?" Logan asked mockingly.

"It's a form of self-preservation."

"Um, Elena, why don't you and Jenna go somewhere else?" Stefan said, giving Elena a significant look, hoping she would understand.

She seemed to because she nodded and grabbed Jenna's hand.

"Let's go."

Elena dragged a none to reluctant Jenna away, Logan watched them leave and then turned to face Stefan.

"What did you do to my brother?"

"Nothing permanent, shot him with a few wooden bullets, but he was digging those out just fine when I left him. Can't say the same for the two lovely ladies that were with him though, they didn't seem quite so resilient. Guess they weren't vampires."

"What are you doing here?"

"You know, your brother asked me the same thing. In fact, why don't we just skip past all that who turned me stuff and get the answer that I want? How can I turn into a day walker?"

"Damon and I are the only two that I know of."

"Lie. I saw you drinking blood in the woods, you know after I woke and dug myself out of the grave, I was buried in. That's when I found out you were a vampire. I've been watching you on and off since, and those other people you and your brother live with there vampires too. Now, since I've seen all of you in the sun, I know you were lying." He smirked at Stefan, "Your brother lied too, and he was very recalcitrant. Wouldn't tell me which one of you turned me, wouldn't tell me how to walk in the sun. See I know there must be a way and I want to know what it is. You know, in case you hadn't noticed, I'm quite the celebrity in this town. It would be very, very easy for me to expose you."

"You wanna know how you can walk around in the sun?"

"I do."

"You can't. Don't ever threaten me again."

Stefan brushed passed Logan and headed outside as fast as he could. He needed to call his brother and make sure he was okay, and he needed to get back-up fast. Because there was no way Logan Fell was done. He phoned his brother as soon as the door slammed shut behind him.

"Logan Fell is a vampire and when I find him again, I'm gonna destroy him limb by limb."

"Are you okay? He said he shot you. And the agents you were with."

"You spoke to him?"

"Yeah, he's here at the school."

"We'll be right there."

Damon hung up before Stefan could answer, or repeat his earlier question. He put it away, he spotted Agent Grant heading towards him across the parking lot, but before he reached Stefan, Elena came through the door and walked over to him.

"So. Anything you'd like to share."

"Logan Fell was killed a month ago by a vampire, he must have died with vamp blood in his system and now he's one too."

"What are you going to do?"

Stefan knew with Elena now around that the Agent would hang back unless it was absolutely necessary to reveal himself.

"Keep an eye on Logan until Damon gets here. Then we'll make a plan to separate him from the crowds and deal with him."

"Fine. Lets go."

She headed back inside before he could stop her, Stefan jogged to catch up, hoping to deter her from becoming involved, but despite his every effort she refused to consider not helping him keep an eye on Logan Fell.

Who seemed to have disappeared.

Elena saw Matt and headed in his direction, Stefan following after her.

"Hey, have you seen Logan Fell, the news guy?"

"Yeah. He just gave Caroline a ride home."

Elena gave Stefan an alarmed look as Matt walked off. Stefan grabbed Elena's hand and gave it a squeeze.

"We'll get her back, but you need to stay here. I mean it Elena. Stay here. I'll call you once Caroline's safe."

He rushed away, texting Damon, to give him an update on Logan Fell as he did so. Agent Grant joined him as soon as they were out of sight of Elena.

"Once we're outside I'll apparate us to the ambush point. Your brother's with Agents Benson and Reed, we think we have a good idea where Fell is headed, and we have a plan to cut him off."

"Let's go."

As promised as soon as they were outside the school and thus out of anyone's sight, Agent Grant grabbed his arm and apparated the two of them to a shadowy spot next to an intersection.

"The car's coming. As soon as it stops use your speed to grab Fell and get him out of the car, your brother Benson and Reed, are in the woods across the way, they'll move in as soon as he's out of the car."

Stefan nodded, he could see the lights of a car closing in on their position and he got ready to act. As soon as the car stopped in front of where they were hiding, he sped forward as fast as he could yanked open the door and grabbed Logan, pulling him out of the car and throwing him onto the road. A stake came whistling through the air and impaled Logan through the stomach, Stefan looked back in the direction it had come from and saw his brother standing there with what looked like a modified shotgun of some sort. Agents Benson and Reed stepped out of the woods behind him, wands drawn and pointed at Logan, a red beam of light flew out of Agent Benson wand and hit Logan, who collapsed to the ground like a puppet whose strings had been cut.

"Logan, what happened?! Logan?"

Stefan heard the Sheriff's voice and looked down to see a phone had fallen out of Logan's hand when he'd yanked him from the car. Damon heard it too; he jogged over and picked it up.

"Sheriff, it's Damon."

"Where is Caroline?"

"She's ok. I'm on Elm Street."

He hung up the phone and tossed it onto the empty drivers seat.

"We've got about three minutes. How are we explaining this?"

Before anyone could answer a car came roaring up the road and skidded to a halt in front of where Logan's car had stopped. Agent LaSalle stepped out of the vehicle and took in the scene with a glance.

"Agent Grant, Stefan. Take Miss Forbes home. Benson, Reed, place the evidence that will lead the Sheriff to the warehouse in the car, grab Fell and go. Here's the story, I'm a friend from New York who came back with you today, I'm also aware of vampires. We were driving to the school when you spotted Logan Fell, who you know to be dead, driving his car, and saw that he had Miss Forbes with him. We cut-off the car, grabbed our weapons. Fell got out of his car to attack us, we shot him in the stomach and the leg, and he raced off."

Stefan nodded and picked the unconscious Caroline up out of the car, Agent Grant, grabbed his arm and apparated them to outside the Sheriff's home. She had a cut on her forehead, probably from whatever method Fell had used to knock her unconscious, Stefan thought about giving her his blood to help heal her, but figured that might look a little bit odd to the Sheriff. Agent Grant tapped his wand against the cut and shrugged at the curious look Stefan gave him when it didn't appear to do anything.

"The cut will remain, but all the underlying trauma, including the vicious headache she'd wake up with is gone."

"Thanks."

"Can you take her inside? Or do you need me to?"

"You'll need to, I haven't been invited in."

Stefan handed Caroline over to Agent Grant, who used magic to unlock the door and carry Caroline inside, Stefan took the opportunity to send Elena a text letting her know that Caroline was okay, and the situation had been dealt with. Agent Grant came back out and locked the door behind him.

"I can apparate you back to the boarding house or to the school. Your choice?"

"Boarding House, please."

Agent Grant nodded and once again took hold of Stefan's arm. This time when the twisty-turny sensation of apparition ended, they were standing outside the front door of the boarding house.

"Thanks for your help tonight, Agent Grant."

"It was a pleasure working with you Mr Salvatore."

Stefan nodded to him and headed inside, he wanted a shower, a drink, and a hug from Maya. Not necessarily in that order.

Stefan, after giving her a weirdly long hug and grabbing a whole bottle of scotch from the cabinet, had headed upstairs for a shower. Maggie and Enzo were both still at work, Maggie had a couple of clients she could only see after dark and Enzo was at a faculty meeting. Damon was still out somewhere with Agent LaSalle, Maya didn't know much about what had happened, was happening, just that it involved another vampire. Everyone else being gone, or in Stefan's case temporarily busy, meant that when the doorbell rang and Dobby popped in to say it was Elena Gilbert, Maya was the only one there to open the door. Which she did. Much to Dobby's disapproval.

Maya would make it up to Dobby later, getting an opportunity to 'officially' meet Elena and get a proper read on her was too good to just pass up. In the little under a year that had passed since she'd begun studying with Professor Mephisto and Professor Takeshi, she had managed to refine the control she had over her Occlumency shields and in turn over her Legilimency abilities. She still preferred not to drop her shields in crowded places, because it was just too overwhelming, Professor Mephisto had said that it might always be the case because of her natural abilities. But one-on-one was fine, so now was the absolutely perfect time to probe Elena's thoughts.

If she could. Some supernatural's were super hard to read, even if they didn't practice occlumency. When she opened the door, her shields were already lowered and her legilimency focused on Elena. So, before the other girl had even opened her mouth, Maya could read her thoughts.

'must be Maya', 'wonder how old she is?', 'is Stefan home yet?', 'he saved Caroline, I need to thank him for that', 'I can cope with the whole vampire thing', 'maybe we could try being friends again'.

On the plus side, she clearly had no natural shielding. On the downside, her thoughts were consumed with Stefan. Maybe the spell she'd done to mute the connection was wearing off.

"Hello."

Elena crouched down slightly, trying to level herself with Maya. A year ago, Maya was barely four feet tall, but now, after over a year filled with hearty meals and healing potions, she was now just over five feet and not that much smaller than the other girl. What would once have come across as an attempt to be non-threatening, now made Maya feel like she was being unnecessarily babied. The sweet tone Elena put on didn't really help, either.

"Hi, you must be Maya. I'm Stefan's friend Elena. It's nice to finally meet you, I've heard a lot about you." 'from Caroline, I shouldn't have stopped speaking to Stefan,'

"You're Jenna's niece."

'how does she know Jenna?', 'Jenna's never mentioned her,' "Yes, I am. Have you met Jenna?"

"Yeah, her and Babbo get Coffee together loads, I've gone with him a couple of times."

'who's babbo?' "Who's Babbo?"

"My godfather, Babbo's what I call him."

'Damon?', 'Jenna's been getting coffee with Damon?', 'Vampire Damon?', 'Possible killer, Damon'.

Maya frowned at Elena's thoughts. Damon had killed yes; he'd admitted as much to Maya when he'd been telling her his life story. But, aside from accidental deaths when he was first turned and still learning to control himself, which wasn't really his fault as he'd had no-one to teach him. Damon had only ever killed in Self-defence, and during the war when he'd been fighting for the good guys. Besides, Jenna was good for Damon, and as far as Maya could tell, Damon was good for Jenna, they gave each other someone to talk to about stuff. They were just friends anyway, and if Elena was allowed to be friends with Stefan, then Jenna was allowed to be friends with Damon.

"That's cute." 'kind of weird, isn't he just her Godfather or something'.

That had been a lot less irritating when Caroline had said the same thing.

"So, is Stefan home yet?" 'I want to see him, thank him for Caroline', 'I want to start mending fences'.

"He went to have a shower."

"Oh, well could I come in and wait for him?"

"I'm not supposed to invite people in unless an adult is home."

"But Stefan's home."

"I'm also not supposed to invite people in after dark."

"I'm not a vampire!"

"Rules are rules. You should talk to Stefan tomorrow at school."

Elena's eyes narrowed and a flurry of thoughts went through her head, Maya brought her shields back up after the third; 'I want to see Stefan tonight'. Elena's thoughts mostly resolved around Stefan. She wondered if that was an all the time thing, an indicator that her spell was perhaps fading, or whether it was just because Elena had come here to see Stefan.

"Ok then." Elena said eventually, "Guess I'll head home. It was really nice meeting you Maya."

"Bye."

Maya didn't wait for her to move before shutting the door on Elena, and turning round to see a disapproving Dobby staring at her, hands on hips and foot tapping disapprovingly.

"Did Miss Maya, be learning what she wanted to?"

Oops. Clearly, she hadn't been that subtle.

"Yep."

"Then Miss Maya, should be going to get ready for bed. It is being late."

"I'll go straight up Dobby, goodnight."

"Goodnight, Miss Maya."

Stefan's door opened and he poked his head out when Maya passed.

"Did I hear you talking to someone? Is Damon home?"

"Elena came by, she wanted to see you, but I told her you'd talk to her tomorrow at School."

"Oh," Stefan hesitated for a second before adding, "Thanks, Maya."

"No problem, good night, Stefan."

"Good night, Maya."

Damon watched as Agents LaSalle, Benson, and Reed efficiently doctored the scene to make it look as if the story Agent LaSalle had come up with was what actually happened. In less than a minute the evidence of the warehouse was planted, Caroline was being taken home, and Benson and Reed had apparated away with Fell. A minute later Sheriff Forbes pulled up, she was out of her car and over next to Damon within seconds.

"Where is she?"

"She's ok. Stefan's taken her home. She's safe Liz, she's safe."

Liz nodded a few times and took a few calming breaths before firming up and looking him in the eye, in a way that Damon knew meant she was back in Sheriff mode.

"What happened?"

"Chris and I,"

Damon indicated Agent LaSalle who was leaning against the car he'd drove up in.

"and Stefan, were headed to the school for the Careers fair. We were running a bit late. I saw Logan driving his car and I remember you telling me that he was killed by the vampire last month..."

Damon thanked his lucky stars that the Sheriff had mentioned Logans fate to him the day after it happened, else this would probably be a whole lot harder to explain.

"I thought maybe I was just seeing things and then I saw Caroline. She seemed to be asleep, or passed out in the passenger seat and it all just, kind of clicked. Logan Fell was a vampire! You know?"

The Sheriff nodded; she must have had her own 'oh shit!' moment at the school.

"Well. Chris here knows about vampires, and I suppose I'm going to have to fill Stefan in, at least a little bit to explain tonight… Anyway, I made Chris cut-off Logan's car with his and he grabbed his gun, filled with wooden bullets –"

"Never leave home without 'em, ma'am".

"And I grabbed the gun, I had with me, a precaution 'cause your phone call earlier had me paranoid."

"Thank God." Sheriff Forbes murmured.

"Yeah, well we armed ourselves and Logan, he got out of his car and looked like he was planning on attacking us, so we just opened fire. I don't think either of us got him in the heart, but he must have figured his odds were better if he took off. I'm really sorry Sheriff, he got away from us."

Sheriff Forbes shook her head.

"No, you saved Caroline. Don't be sorry, you saved my little girl."

She took another few breaths and nodded, another patrol car pulled up a little distance away and two deputies got out, one talking on his radio.

"Thank you. Both of you. For your actions tonight. My deputies and I will take it from here."

"Of course, Sheriff. I'll drop the vervain by your office tomorrow if you'd like."

"Yes, thank you Damon, that would be great. And once again, thank you both for what you did tonight."

"Sheriff."

"Ma'am"

Agent LaSalle tipped an imaginary hat towards her, and Damon inclined his head before they both got into the car and drove off.

"Think she bought it?"

"No reason not to. And once we're done with the interrogation, we'll dump Fell's body somewhere it will be easily found, make it look like one of the bullets moved and shredded his heart while he was running away."

"Think you'll actually get anything from the interrogation?"

"As my dear grandpappy used to say, 'Hope for the best, Christopher, son, but don't y'all be countin' on the Lord to hand ya everything you're prayin' for.'"

Damon laughed.

"We'll git what we git, and I'll tell ya everthin' he tells us."

"Thanks. And for all you and your teams help today."

"Just doin' my job, Mr Salvatore. Just doin' my job."

They were still about a mile away from the Boarding House when Agent LaSalle was forced to slam on his breaks due to the overturned car on the road. A dark figure who'd been approaching the car flashed away at vampire speed before they'd even fully stopped.

"That's Elena Gilberts car."
