Prompts used: Left For Dead & Alt. Forgotten
Virgil picked himself up from the floor with a groan. His head felt like it was splitting in two, and he clutched his skull in both hands as he stood up on shaky legs.
He blinked through the pain as he tried to remember where he was.
What had happened?
He was on a rescue, that was it. And he still had to finish it. There were still people that needed rescuing.
He glanced around, and found that the path he'd been taking was now blocked by rocks. That was going to make this harder, but he knew not to worry. There were several other tunnels in this cave that he could go through instead, he would just have to head back the way he'd come and find another way to the victims.
But he couldn't hang about any longer. There were people who needed his help.
He turned on his heel, his hand still on his head as he trudged back up the tunnel.
Gordon pushed at the rocks on his chest, sucking in a sharp breath when the movement only caused more pain to spark through his body.
Bad idea.
He let the pain settle for a moment, not daring to move any further in case the rest of the cavern came down on top of him. He had practically stopped breathing, either from the worry that just a breath could cause more rocks to come down, or because it just hurt to do so.
Gordon then heard a groan come from across the small space, but it was the sound of a person, not creaks of the fragile rocks around them.
He turned his head as much as he could in the direction of the noise.
"Virgil?"
His brother seemed to finally be stirring, and Gordon slumped in relief. He could help get him out of there.
Virgil had gathered himself onto his feet, and he was clutching his head. Gordon wouldn't be surprised if his brother had a concussion, seeing as he had been unconscious for a long while since the cavern had collapsed.
"Am I glad to see you awake, big guy. Could you help me out here?"
Virgil didn't seem to hear him, which Gordon found hard to believe. It was a pretty small, basically claustrophobic part of the cavern they were in, and that was before the walls had come in on them. Even if Virgil hadn't heard him from only a couple of feet away, he must have seen Gordon and the danger he was in buried beneath the rocks.
"Virg?" He tried again, the worry starting to gnaw at him. He really just wanted to get out of there.
From his angle on the floor, Gordon could see his brother blink sluggishly. He even glanced over at him, and then turned away.
"Virgil, wait-"
Gordon gasped in pain as his growing panic caused him to move too much, and the rocks pressed further down on his chest.
Virgil's back was to him as he began to walk in the opposite direction, and Gordon's heart plummeted.
He was going to leave him there.
"Virgil! Please, don't leave me!" Gordon yelled after his brother.
He was growing frantic now as he pushed against the rocks to try and get himself free, no longer caring about the pain. He just didn't want to be left alone.
He could feel tears start to spill down his face. They mixed with the dust and grime on his cheeks.
"Virgil!"
His brother continued down the tunnel in the direction they'd come from. He gave no indication he even knew Gordon was there.
"Please!" Gordon cried.
Virgil disappeared out of his view.
