Chapter 5: Nursing The Nurse:

Weakly, but slowly, Chloe's eyes began opening up. She could barely make out her surroundings. She heard faint voices scrambling all over the room, confusing her greatly. Once she was fully awake, she could see that she was lying on a patient's bed. But even then, things still weren't clicking through all the way for her to properly process her current situation.

Chloe bolted upwards, but before she could do anything else, she felt herself being restrained. Whoever was restraining the blonde woman was clearly trying to be gentle, but dominant.

"Take it easy, it's me, Chloe."

"Steve?" She calmed down upon realizing that it was a friendly person trying to restrain her.

Sensing how confused Chloe was beginning to feel, Steve explained the small gist of what happened to her. "I got your message and rushed over to where your last known location was." A look of extreme guilt fell upon his face. "And that's when I found you lying on the ground unconscious in that alleyway, beaten...battered."

"Steve, you don't need to feel guilty, even the great Captain America can't be everywhere at once."

"But-"

The female blonde raised one finger in the air in a silencing motion. "No butts Steve, whether your super soldier pride wants to admit it or not we're only human." Suddenly, Steve started laughing to himself, drawing the curiosity from Chloe. "What's so funny?" She began pouting and groaning as if she were a small child.

"It's nothing really," Said Steve. "It's just when you said 'Super Soldier Pride' it reminded me of Tony, sounds like something he'd say to me if we were debating something."

Chloe smiled. "Oh really? You think I sound like Tony Stark?"

Steve now had a slight look of embarrassment. "I mean, not actually like Tony, but-"

"I'm just missing the oddly sharp mustache and beard and the genius, billionaire businessman aspects, right?"

Steve did not know how to respond to Chloe's comments. Little did the living legend know was that Chloe was merely teasing him. When Steve finally had a firm grasp on what to say next, Chloe spoke up. "I'm only kidding Steve, you can ease up."

"I know," He chuckled. "Still trying to get used to today's humor."

Chloe ended up laughing. "Don't worry Steve, I find your modern naivety adorable."

"God I feel like an out of touch grandfather." Said Steve as he sighed.

Chloe once again laughed softly. "Like I said before, it's adorable Rogers."

For a moment the two remained silent as Steve began to look out of the window of her hospital room. Chloe could not help but admire how tall, and handsome he looked. How clean cut his jawline was. Chloe even swore she had seen his abs bulging through his shirt.

Steve was quite attractive, and to Chloe's mind that was putting it mildly. He was downright handsome, he was gorgeous. Chloe smiled to herself, having fantasies of seeing Steve standing front and center while leading The Avengers into battle in person. That'd be a sight to behold. She thought.

Suddenly Chloe's daydreaming was cut short by the voices of three police officers who suddenly began talking to her immediately after entering her hospital room. Steve was immediately on standby, watching the every move of the three officers.

"Excuse me Miss Harper?" Said the leader of the police trio. "I'm Detective Glenn Joseph

"I'm Detective Mike."

"And I'm Officer Loebs."

Detective Joseph began speaking again, this time more rapidly as if he were in a hurry. "As you can see we're with the D.C Police Department, and we'd like to ask you some questions about the men who attacked you, so please bare with us and answer as much as possible."

Chloe for some reason was now feeling uncomfortable, but she tried her best to sound brave and confident. "O-Okay."

"When were you attacked?

"Where were you attacked?"

"How were you attacked?"

"And most importantly, why were you attacked? We need to know these facts as soon as possible so we can catch the criminals who did this, so I don't mean to be a bug, but the sooner you answer these the better."

Chloe was now beyond uncomfortable as the three DCPD Officers were now surrounding her hospital bed and beginning to pester her. She could now feel the sweat pouring from her head as she tried desperately to give them answers.

She saw how the cops were basically giving her blank death stares which made her feel more at ease. Chloe was beginning to the feel the urge to scream and have a mental breakdown.

Until she heard another voice, this time a calming and familiar voice. "Officers, you're dismissed. Get out, now."

The three officers were now looking at the irritated Captain America. He towered over them with ease. The looks of disinterest and negligence quickly turned into looks of fear and nervousness.

"C-C-Captain Rogers." The three awestruck men said in unison. Chloe watched with interest, awaiting Steve's next move.

Steve spoke up with full command in his voice, eyeing the leader of the trio. "Son, I don't know how long you've been an American officer, but clearly you've got experience that most men don't have. However, any law enforcement officer should know that the first thing they should be doing when confronting a person who's been assaulted, especially a woman or child, is ensuring their personal comfort. Now stand by the doorway, and watch and learn."

The three officers nervously nodded and quickly hurried towards the door, allowing for Steve to conduct his own investigation and questioning of Chloe, but at the same time ensure that she was comfortable and certain that her privacy would not be violated.

The officers were far away enough where they were out of sight, but could still see Rogers conducting the investigation through the room's see through windows.

Once the officers were out of Chloe's line of sight, She instantly began feeling levels of comfort she'd never felt before. Something about Steve made her feel warm inside and out. She was ready and willing to cooperate.

Steve asked a doctor for a pad and pen, and once he received these, he began the investigation and questioning.

"Now Miss Harper, I am going to ask you some questions regarding you and your attackers."

"Okay." She replied softy.

"Remember, this is regarding your personal safety and security ma'am so take your time when answering any questions and feel free to not answer any personal questions that you may feel uncomfortable sharing, I'm here to help you, not pressure you, or force you."

Chloe nodded, ready to answer any and all questions asked by Steve. The officers outside of the room were marveled by how easy Rogers made this look.

"First we're going to get into the looks of your attackers, what did they look like? And what were they wearing? Did their clothing have anything of significance, such as a symbol, phrase or logo?"

Chloe slowly shook her head no. "No Captain Rogers," she said purely out of instinct. "They had on genetic all black clothing and they both of them were masked, and they did not have any symbols, or phrases on their clothing, or if it was there, I didn't see it."

Steve nodded and began taking notes of everything Chloe was saying. Chloe watched the defrosted Captain take down her details in his pad. Once he was finished, he asked her the next question. "How did they sound? Did they have an accent? German, Russian, Spanish or any other foreign languages?"

"They didn't, Captain. They sounded like your typical American crooks that you'd run into at the park late night. Although, they did speak in this creepy manner."

Steve nodded, jotting down more details. "Hmm, I see? How did this creepy manner sound Miss Harper?"

"It was just bizarre, they sounded like they were imitating snakes?"

Steve looked slightly surprised. "Snakes you say?"

Chloe nodded, followed by a blank expression. "Yes, they sounded like Snakes for some reason. As crazy as it sounds, these guys were making snake sounds in certain words. They sounded like this, 'Shut the hell up and get thissss doneeee."

Steve looked puzzled, but overall believed the story as he jotted down more details on his pad.

Steve sighed as the thought of the next question he was about to ask. Part of him wanted to skip this question altogether, but it was crucial to his ongoing investigation. "Okay Miss Harper, the next question I'm going to ask you may be tough to answer, but it may also be crucial to our investigation. But remember as I've said before, any questions you feel uncomfortable answering, you are legally entitled to not answer questions that breach your confidentiality rights and personal boundaries."

Deep down, Chloe was nervous about sharing what she was about to say next. But she didn't feel as nervous and scared as she would've had the cops been the ones questioning her. With Steve, she felt as if she was the safest woman on the planet. So she sighed and decided to share the pushy information with Steve. "I'll answer it. One of them...caressed my cheek..."

Steve could sense that Chloe was nervous, so to make her feel more comfortable and confident, he placed a hand on her shoulder. "It's okay if you feel scared, we can stop here if you want."

"No, I'll share it...one of the crooks possibly tried to rape me, but was stopped by his partner in crime."

Steve's face grew more serious after hearing that last line. He jotted down more details, albeit more quickly and aggressively and Chloe saw this, but chose to say nothing about it.

Luckily for Steve, he had managed to regain control of his composure enough to continue asserting his authority. "What else did they say? What else did they try and do? Did they make any sort of demands?"

Chloe nodded. "Yes they did, and they asked me...to obtain DNA samples of you, Steve."

Steve's eyes actually widened slightly. Now he was more interested than ever. "Captain America's DNA? Interesting, why'd they ask for Captain America's DNA?"

Chloe shrugged, genuinely a little worried but also confused as well. "I'm not sure Steve, although my guess is whoever these guys are, they must want it for some sort of crazy scientific contraction. Maybe a blood transfusion? They probably believe in a theory that if they give their fellow criminals your blood, it'll also give them the serum, it's just a theory on my part Steve, but with how crazy and unreal the world is these days, I wouldn't hold it against them."

Steve was impressed with the answer. "That's a very interesting and also helpful response Miss Harper, with your excellent response and cooperation, we'll be able to catch the bad guys that did this to you? Before we conclude is there anything else you'd like to tell me about the men that did this to you?"

Chloe shook her head in a declining fashion. "No, after that," She then opened her arms to signal her current position in the hospital. "Well, you know the rest."

"Ahh, I see, well I think I have enough to pull some S.H.I.E.L.D. resources into a proper investigation."

Once Steve dropped his 'Captain America' mode, he and Chloe began talking to each other like normal people this time around.

"Now that that's over with," Steve stood up and walked over to Chloe's right side of the bed. "Is there anything I can do to help make you more comfortable?"

Noticing the small level of nervousness in Steve's tone, a smile fell across Chloe's face. "Steve, it's okay, you don't have to coddle me like a baby, after all, you've already been so much helpful."

"But Chloe, are you sure there's nothing that I can do?"

Chloe laughed quietly. His innocence and low-confidence around a woman is so cute. "Well you could bring us both some food for starters, ever since I was a little kid, I've always hated the nasty stuff they feed patients."

"Yeah I know," said Steve as he formed his own smile. "Whenever I was sick before the serum and in the hospital, Ma before she died would always try and get me to the Hospital's food."

"And did you eat it?"

Steve chuckled quietly before continuing. "Yeah I did, I had to. When the Depression hit, it was especially hard on me and ma, so we especially didn't have food to be wasted, so as bad as Hospital foods tasted, it at least kept the sick and frail Brooklyn kid from the 'Greatest Generation' with a stuffed belly, those meals truly taught me the importance of being grateful for everything that you have."

Chloe was emotionally touched by Steve's story. As she listened to Steve speak of his gratitude for a simple meal during those dark days, she felt a wave of emotions wash over her.

She was moved by his resilience, by his ability to find hope in the midst of despair, and by his unwavering gratitude for the small blessings in life. In a world filled with turmoil and uncertainty Chloe for one knew Steve Rogers' story serves as a powerful reminder of the strength of the human spirit.

Chloe in that exact moment knew why Steve was acknowledged as the leader of the Avengers and arguably one of if not the greatest soldier who's ever lived.

"I can see why you were chosen to become the world's first Super Soldier, Steve."

The Captain was now intrigued by Chloe's remark. "You do?"

Chloe smiled with sincerity and chuckled. "Yeah I do, you see Steve, like I told you before that it's not Captain America," before Chloe continued he pointed a finger to his chest, specifically his heart. "but it's Steve Rogers who embodies the qualities of a true hero: bravery, compassion, resilience, unshakeable integrity, and a selfless heart. You took hours out of your life to make sure I was safe despite not knowing me for long. If that doesn't show a person how sweet you are handsome, I don't know what will."

Steve smiled, "Thank you Chloe."

"Don't mention it." Chloe replies, as she smiles back.

Chloe is not a soldier or a superhero. She is simply a kind, warm-hearted individual who has a way of brightening up even the darkest of days. She has a smile that can light up a room and a heart as pure as they come. And as Steve thinks about her, He can't help but be reminded of the goodness that still exists in this world.

In a world full of chaos and uncertainty, It could all use a little more kindness, a little more compassion. Chloe embodies these qualities effortlessly, and her presence serves as a beacon of hope for us all. She may not have super strength or a shield like his, but Steve knew that her true strength lies in her ability to spread love, compassion and positivity wherever she goes.

In their longer conversation, Chloe still realized she was hungry, so she brought it up to Steve so they didn't stray too far away from the topic of food. "Hey Steve, I'm still hungry, so you know what we can do?"

"Yeah, what's that?"

"You can go order a pizza, preferably pepperoni. And once you do that, we can share more stories about our childhood experiences growing up in the 1920s and 1930s as well as the 1990s and 2000s."

Steve smiled before deciding to crack a small joke. "Are you just trying to get rid of me quickly."

Easily deducing that Steve was trying his best to crack a modern day quip and playfully fired back with her own quip. "Well if you don't get hurry up and go get my food and feed me, I'll have to find a replacement for Captain America, that's an order soldier."

"I'm one of a kind ma'am." Said Steve and he stood up and prepared to leave momentarily. "I'm irreplaceable."

Steve couldn't help but let out a small laugh at Chloe's persistence and overall sassy demeanor. Those were some of the qualities that he secretly enjoyed about her. In a way, she reminded him of himself in a few ways.

"Oh and Steve?"

Before Steve could leave the room, he turned around to see what Chloe wanted. "Yeah?" Chloe began rummaging through her belongings on a nearby table. Once she found what she was looking for, she looked in Steve's direction.

After this, she perfectly tossed Steve a rolled up stack of cash, with the super soldier easily catching it with little to no effort. "Bring back some cookies as well, preferably the soft ones. And anything else you want, get it. Consider it as a mere part of my gratitude."

"Will do."

Once he gotten Chloe's approval, Steve left her hospital room to go and get the food. He was particularly interested in learning more about her past and the strange ways of the modern age.

"So you're telling me, during the 1930s and 1940s, parents would just beat their kids into submission and force them to get cigarettes and alcohol?"

"Yep. Some things better back then Chloe, while some things are much better now."

"Agreed." Said Chloe as she took a bite out of a slice of her pizza. "I couldn't imagine my mother, or even my father forcing me to do something like that Steve. The Greatest Generation has some nasty secrets that should stay in the dark."

"I wouldn't argue it." Said Steve as he finished his third slice. "Some things are better left unsaid, or rather left in the past?"

Chloe at that moment had just finished eating a cookie. "That actually reminds me of something I've been wanting to ask you Steve."

"Go ahead, take your time Chloe."

Chloe sighed softly before speaking. She honestly wasn't sure how well Steve would take this question, but she overall felt it was good for his adjustment and development of the 21st century. "Do you sometimes feel like you should've been left in the ice?"

Chloe noticed Steve's immediate change of demeanor. She now felt really bad for asking him the question and even wondered if she strained their relationship, or whatever form of this that they had. "You don't have-"

"No it's okay, you're only curious and just trying to help Chloe. But I'll be honest with you, when S.H.I.E.L.D. first defrosted me, I went through a Great Depression of my own when I realized that almost everyone I had loved and cared about had either died or lived their lives and aged greatly. And on top of all that, after barley being in the modern world for seven months, the Tesseract reappears, then Loki happens, and all of that was just a lot to take in for the guy who went down in 1945 and then what was practically tomorrow for me, woke up in 2011. So yes, sometimes I wish I was left in the ice."

"And you absolutely have every right to feel that way Steve," said Chloe as she reached for his hand. "Fate dealt you some unfair circumstances, but for now, it's best to just take the hand your dealt with and make the most of your life in this day and age, Steve."

Steve looked at her and awkwardly, but politely smiled. "Thank you, Chloe. That actually makes me feel better, and I mean by a lot."

Chloe simply gave Steve a smile. There was something about his overall Innocent character and demeanor that she genuinely was fond of.

Behind all of the stars, stripes, behind him being a leader of the Avengers, behind him being a consultant for S.H.I.E.L.D., there was just this sweet and innocent kid from Brooklyn who wanted to find a sense of normality in a world that always left him behind.

Chloe for one was going to show Steve that he wasn't alone in this world, and that she'd stick by his side through it all.

But before any further conversation could proceed, a female nurse came into the room with the intention of speaking to Chloe. "Excuse me for interrupting Miss Harper, but we've got some updates on your injuries."

Chloe, and especially Steve, were both interested in this. "Go ahead." Said Chloe.

The female nurse nodded which was followed by a sincere smile. "Very well. After an analysis of your injuries, we've determined that besides the obvious cuts and bruises, you've suffered a minor concussion, but nothing a good day or two's worth of rest can't fix. The doctors say that you can be discharged tomorrow if you would like." The Nurse looked at Steve whom was still next to Chloe. "Would you like Captain Rogers to sign you out since he was the one who brought you here in the first place, Miss Harper?"

Chloe looked at Steve, and she knew by the look on his face he wouldn't do anything unless she had given him the green light to do so. So she reassured him.

"Yeah it's fine, I give my given consent for Captain Rogers to sign me out of the hospital." Chloe could hear Steve's sighing out of relief, which caused her to laugh quietly.

The nurse nodded gave Chloe a quick nod. "Excellent, I'll be back momentarily with the proper paperwork." The nurse then quietly exited the room, leaving the two of them alone once more.

Chloe took a deep breath. "Well, at least I don't have to spend anymore time in an Erie hospital. And Steve, after I leave here tomorrow, we're gonna make a pit stop. It's one of the many ways I can say thank you once again."

"I don't know Chloe, the first thing you should be doing is getting home and-"

"No buts, Soldier. You won't change my mind. That's what we're doing tomorrow and that's an order."

Chloe could hear the chuckle from Steve. Knowing there was no changing her mind at all, Steve merely sat down, nodded and filled out the paperwork to have Chloe signed out of the hospital tomorrow morning.

Steve as he kept his smile strong. He continuously kept thinking about how similar Chloe was to him. She had sheer determination, just like him. A beaming willpower, just like him. Amazing values and compassion, just like him.

Steve wondered just what else Chloe could bring to the table outside of being just another S.H.I.E.L.D. He decided that tomorrow he'd keep getting to know just why Chloe was so much of a unique person.

A/N's: And that wraps up Chapter 5 of Captain America: Legend Reborn. God it's been forever since I've updated anything, and we can all blame the stresses of college and being a young adult In New York City navigating the treacherous terrain known as 'Adulthood'. Thank god I graduate next Spring, and have chosen Online Classes for the entire semester next year. Anyways, with the boring stuff out of the way, onto the story.

As you can see here, nothing too major, just the aftermath of Chloe's attackers and more progress in the relationship between her and Cap. Chapter 6 I personally think will be a good one for me to write, and everyone else to enjoy, you get to finally meet the Best Friends! And see how Steve interacts in a room with three modern gals! Also have the entire Arc for the Winter Soldier scripted and ready to write if I didn't mention it before, so whatcha see in every chapter going forward is what I originally wrote and scripted, unless I make an announcement in my A/Ns that I made a few small (or possibly a more major) changes to the story. Currently in the process of writing my scripts for the Age Of Ultron & Civil War arcs of the story.

Christ almighty I did not intend for the A/N's to be this long, and to make matters crazier, I've got my sister's birthday party to attend to later today. But anyways, the story starts to pick up from here, and as I've said before, the next chapter will be Steve meeting Chloe's best friends following her short stay at the hospital following her attack so be prepared!

With that being said, have fun, stay safe, and be good people :)
